  • Watch Part 2: • What's behind Iraq's w...
Iraq is running out of water. It is the fifth most vulnerable nation to the impact of climate change, according to the United Nations. Temperatures have risen by more than 2.5 degrees Celsius (36.5 degrees Fahrenheit) since the end of the 19th century, double the global average. The impact has been particularly visible in the last two years. Water levels in the Euphrates and Tigris rivers have dropped by half. Iraq’s government blames upstream water use by its neighbours as the primary culprit but has been criticised for not taking any steps at climate mitigation or adaptation strategies. And many Iraqis say oil industry water use is just exacerbating the problem.
People & Power examines the internal and external factors contributing to Iraq's water shortage while shedding light on the government's response.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The Hour will not come to pass before the River Euphrates dries up to unveil the mountain of gold, for which people will fight. Ninety-nine out of one hundred will die (in the fighting) and every man amongst them will say: 'Perhaps I may be the only one to remain alive."'
Another narration is: "The time is near when the River Euphrates will dry up to unveil a treasure of gold. Whosoever may be alive at that time, should not take anything of it."

@@user-uh8ro8iv2z You provided a thoughtful comment. The population issue should be manageable. For example, Iraq is approximately the same size as the U.S. state of California. Iraq has a population of 45.5 million, while California has a population of 41.3 million. Many parts of California have the same irrigation and water access issues presented to the Iraqi farmers. California directs revenue raised from taxes to address the issues. Iraq is the 4th largest exporter of oil in the world. There must be a lot of tax revenue that can be raised from the oil. I live in the U.S. state of Alaska. Nearly all revenue used to operate the state is from interest income resulting from invested oil taxation revenues. I would like to see much of the manufacturing presently occurring in China being moved to the countries you mentioned, especially Iraq. The added industrial productivity would also generate tax revenue that can be applied to the water issues.

    • @user-uh8ro8iv2z
      @user-uh8ro8iv2z 8 місяців тому +1

@@timothybrady2749 it is true that the size of California is more or less than Iraq, however don't forget that California is one of the richest country in the world (i mean if you consider it as a country) while Iraq does not export so many goods except to oil. Iraq in 2000 was around 2o Million people and they double themselves in 2o years which means that the next 10-20 years will bring more death and civil wars in this region. By the way, Egypt 80 years ago was around 10 Million and now they are 110 Miilion and under the supervision of the Islam they will become 150 Million in 20 years from now. I believe that those Muslim countries need birth control right away because with climent changes and lack of resources they can bring disasters on themselves.

@@user-uh8ro8iv2z Yes. You make some very strong and valid points. Most Iraqi families I know do have approximately 3 to 4 children. This is only slightly higher than the average family size in the U.S. As you indicate, a consistent family size of greater than two children can dramatically increase a population over time. I was not aware how much population growth had occurred in Iraq and Egypt in just the past few decades. I really appreciated considering your comments. I learned from you as I did from the Al Jazeera presentation. Best wishes to your family.

Many places around the World are experiencing similar water issues. Look at the desert Southwest in the United States. Cities such as Phoenix, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City etc. have all seen a huge increase in their populations over the past few decades and are now facing the reality of growing water shortages. Where it stops is anyone’s guess. Water conservation/education, better farming techniques, slowing down the urban sprawl in these cities can all help to preserve what limited resources there are. Israel has done an incredible job at this. Perhaps we all need to study what has been done there.

      1. It isn't really their fault that Iraq isn't using it's oil wealth to build proper water infrastructure. If they did, the water flowing in would be more than enough.
      2. Aside from Iraq making zero investments into this they also expect to part with even more water which they use for electricity while at the same time terrorist organizations based in Iraq are continually attacking their infrastructure while the Iraqi government seems to do nothing about?
I'd imagine the Turks are more than willing to play ball on this issue, if some of their highly reasonable concerns are met. No one want (aside from the Iraq government) seems to want to see these people suffer.

Turkey's construction of the Elisu dam was a direct cause of a major decrease of water to Iraq, by more than HALF. It has caused drought in both Syria and Iraq, leading to conflict and war. Turkey has repeatedly failed to release water downstream, despite Iraqi authorities peacefully requesting a greater share of water. Iraq and Syria have asked over and over again for a water sharing agreement that would satisfy all countries needs. Turkey refuses. Water is also natural resource like petrol. Why are you putting blame on Turkey, they are using their own water which fall on their land. When Iraqi people found petrol under their land do they give it free to neighbouring countries. You are selling this why it is different for water then. Even Turkey is not making dams for profit, they are doing to ensure their population have enough

@@Suryoyoyoyo In the 1980s the a Turkish president made an interesting comment on this issue.
We don't tell you what to do with your oil, don't tell us what to do with our water.
I'd imagine the Turks could easily play ball on this issue, the trouble is Iraqi government seems to have zero interest in reigning in terrorist organizations based in Iraq which are constantly attacking Turkey. Not to mention the water they allow downstream is more than enough for everyone if Iraq decided to use some of it's oil revenue to make the water infrastructure more efficient.
You're literally blaming the wrong guys for the problem.

Please, for the love of God, the globe is watching Saudi Arabia piss on their religious identity while making love to the West. Saudi Arabia is responsible for the likes of Nicki Minaj performing in Dubai & Travis Scott performing in Egypt. The Turks aren't even asking for that much.
They simply want two things which are highly reasonable.
      1. Iraq use some of it's oil money to build better water infrastructure to make water use more efficient.
      2. Crack down on terrorist organizations based in Iraq which are attacking Turkey.
You can't be doing all these terrible things to your neighbor and then expect them to bend over backwards for you. The government in Iraq needs to shape up and tend to the needs of their people.
