Not exactly a Nostradamus but I predict you'll cry during Forrest Gump.
you might want to avoid gladiator 2 until people tell you it's good. cuz it's probably going to suck
Because the Roman's were evil trying to conquer the world
This movie isn't factual the Roman's never conquered the German tribes
He smells the dirt because he is a farmer. Skilled farmers can assess the condition of the soil by feel, look, and smell. Just a way to keep reminding us that he is a home and family man before anything else, his reminder of home.
That so cool!!!
He was a soldier of Rome. HONOR HIM!
@@Thom1212Maximus would have preferred to be remembered as a farmer
that´s a really good answer, I like it and makes the meaning of the symbolism even deeper. I always simlply thought he smells it to become closer to "becoming one with the battleground"
I didn't know that about the farmers, that's very interesting
I am in this movie! I was a Roman In the opening battle scene. Spent 12 days filming with Russel Crowe, Richard Harris and directed by Ridley Scott in 1999. Some wonderful
Memories.
That's awesome, How do you manage to get something like that?
@@ace6483 more by luck than design. They used my Uni as a source of extras. We all had a great time.
How Cool! That must have been a great experience.
Just think about how fortunate you are. Had you been cast as a barbarian, you wouldn't have survived to post. ;-)

They were the Praetorian Guard for Caesar. Basically the personal bodyguards for the ruler. They weren't part of Maximus' army.
Yep. And you can tell Quintus didn’t like giving the order, but he knew if he didn’t he’d be executed himself.
Yeah, I realized that later and pointed out my mistake! 🤗 May have been cut out, but I did correct myself later on
The Praetorian Guard were also notorious for being quite corrupt and power hungry, as many assassinations and usurping of emperors were carried out by its members.
@@andrew77961
"And you can tell Quintus didn’t like giving the order, but he knew if he didn’t he’d be executed himself"
Realistically though Cicero could have just taken a short walk to the nearest soldier tent and screamed bloody murder.
Within 60 minutes the relatively inexperienced praetorian would be dead or surrendered, and Commodus would be under Maximus's sword.
@@mnomadvfx Realistically speaking, yes. He had the loyalty of his Legion, whats like 5 Praetorians to that?
Maximus continually earning the respect and loyalty of all the men around him is one of my favourite parts of the movie. Just a natural born leader
Such a good point!
Everything he says has purpose. He doesn't speak much but when he does he demonstrates experience and such common sense.
My name is maximus decimus meridius, commander of the armies of the north, general of the felix legions and loyal servant of the TRUE emperor, marcus aurelius. Father to a murderer son, husband to a murderer wife. AND I WILL HAVE MY VENGEANCE, IN THIS LIFE OR THE NEXT 🍿🔥🐐
😭😭😭😭😭😭 so so so good
That really is the "My name is Inigo Montoya ..." of this movie.
Oops. "Murdered," not "murderer." I suggest an edit. (That pair of mistakes changes the meaning an awful lot!)
OK, calm down.
The time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end, Highness
Joaquin Phoenix's busy little bee speech has to be some of the best acting ever put to screen
He is literally so good!
@@LiteWeightReacting He was so convincing in this role that his face angers me even to this day. It's a gift and a curse.
Agreed. I'm always so disappointed when reactors cut it short.
@@Cosmo-Kramer Let’s hope you can recover from that, little one.
@@andreshernandez1180bless your heart for getting offended. We’ll pray for you
I'm not ashamed to admit as a grown man, I cry just like you in this movie 😅
I can't believe they make a sequel to this movie... this movie is perfect they way it is.
Aye. It surprises me that they got Denzel Washington to be involved. The man has dropped a notch in my estimation.
Everything we've seen of the sequel so far reeks of redundancy. The story is just more of the same. I won't go see it.
I’m excited to see what they do with the sequel!
@@LiteWeightReacting I do not have much hope for the sequel. But we'll see.
I do not know why you cry. The general did his job even without an army at his back and against all odds.
4:10 "This song sounds like it would be in Pirates of the Caribbean."
Yep.
Hans Zimmer composed it.
He's a musical genius that has done too many movies to count, including the first 4 Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
Zimmer didn’t do Pirates 1, that was his close collaborator Klaus Badelt, who worked on the score of Gladiator with Zimmer
I can listening music from movie everyday :)
I’m glad I wasn’t super far off then!!! Great music in all of them!!
@@JasonTerminator2 That's muddy - there's a story that Zimmer IS responsible for the Pirates theme, but gave the job over to Badelt. Regardless, both fantastic composers.
UUUUGHGHGHGHHGHGHGHHG - the proper credits are literally on the soundtrackalbum cover, the wikipedia page for the film and just about anywhere else it is officially mentioned.
Hans Zimmer AND Lisa Gerrard composed it 🤦♂
For about every 30-40 comments I see on YT crediting only Zimmer for this film score I see only 1 that gives Gerrard credit too.
It's so sad to see people putting this guy up on a pedestal when his almost all of his best credited work is through collaboration - but then it's not like Zimmer's publicists ever go out of their way to shine a light on his collaborators.
Hans Zimmer had very little compositional range at this point in his career (IMHO it peaked at Da Vinci Code in 2006 but that's another story).
It's no accident that Crimson Tide, Gladiator and Last Samurai all have very similar sounding score cues, because he couldn't actually compose something significantly different in the 8+ years between those separate productions.
Basically everything on the soundtrack score that isn't a battle scene in Gladiator is clearly mostly Lisa Gerrard's composition work - her signature is even embedded in the instrument choices which are extremely diverse (to the point of being considered dead instruments by most musicians) as a result of her Dead Can Dance band work.
Zimmer is not a genius, though his publicist clearly is from the way his actual credits seem to be perceived differently from reality - that I won't dispute for a moment 😅
Genius is a strong word to apply to music, especially to film composition as it necessitates a simpler musical style vs the classical symphonies, sonatas, concertos etc that influence this genre.
I'd say few film composers even amount to the level of truly gifted, and I would not count Zimmer would not number among them.
I'd count John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith, Howard Shore, Patrick Doyle and maybe Michael Kamen, though the latter died so young in the early 2000s I think he still had room to grow 😔
If I could count Zimmer himself for one thing it would be a single composition on the Da Vinci Code score called "The Poisoned Chalice" which is my favourite of his work.
The best thing about ZImmer generally would be his influence or mentorship on future composers - of whom there are several in the film composing industry, including Klaus Badelt, Harry (and Rupert?) Gregson-Williams, John Powell and Mark Mancina.
Oliver Reed died during the filming of this movie. The shot of Proximo looking at Maximus through the grated window in the dungeon was recycled from an earlier clip of him. And they used a body double when he gets stabbed to death. I’d say it’s pretty seamless. Especially given the year this came out.
Wow!!! I had no idea! They did an amazing job with that!
Somebody said (can't remember who) that "Oliver died doing what he loved - drinking and surrounded by sailors..." 😉
Oliver Reed was a brilliant actor, and quite the interviewee to have on your talk show. Very sadly missed.
@@MrRosebeingHe was definitely one of a kind that's for sure. They don't make em like that anymore.
A great Bill Sykes in Oliver! 1968 Musical was Oliver Reed
I love how, at the end, the Senator asking for volunteers to carry Maximus results in politician, slave (gladiator), and noble (young Lucius) coming together to honor him in that way.
All while Commodus lay forgot in the dirt.. 😂
Politician, Noble, Military, Slave, all coming together to carry away his body. Perfect.
This is my dad's favorite movie of all time, and I first watched it as a kid in grade school, before rewatching it as a grown-up in college, and now it feels really cool to watch someone else watch it.
Thanks for sharing your memories with the movie! Glad you enjoyed the video!!
The actor who played Proximus (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta, he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.
What an epic ending!
I bet he went out the way he wanted to either way
I knew he passed away before the movie was completed. But holy moley, that was a pretty epic way to exit the stage...
I know him best from The Who’s Tommy
"And it's, like, a happy ending, but it's so sad." Exactly. Simultaneously beautiful and terrible, for there's no way to reverse the tragic ending of his family.
And yet, he is finally free to join them.
@wscottwalters74 But in reality, there most likely is no afterlife. So he just died, and that was it for him
@EmeraldBayMovies And for his family too, sure, so if this was real life it would only be tragedy -- but within the framework of the story itself things are different.
@@EmeraldBayMovies That is, of course, your opinion. At the end of the film, however, we see him going home to his family. So I think the story ends with a sense of serenity.
This is one of those movies that instantly became timeless classic. It will still be watched many decades from now.
It’s so good and will echo in eternity!
14:28. "those are his men, they arent going to kill him". - unfortunately that was actually the Praetorian guard, not the Roman Army. They are loyal to Ceasar. Think of them like a combination of the secret service and gestapo all in one. This particular detail was likely assigned to Commodus and not his father necessarily.
Yeah the purple cloaks are meant as a visual cue to show that they are in league with Comodus. First time ive seen someone assume they were Maximus' men 😄
Yeah, I realized that later and pointed out my mistake! 🤗 May have been cut out, but I did correct myself later on
@@LiteWeightReactingyep I caught that after I made the comment. Great reaction btw! You're one of the few who acknowledged that they were supposed to lose the "battle of Carthage"
In some ways, it was more a matter of whether the Emperor was loyal to the Praetorian guard than the other way around 😶
The irony being that the Praetorian killed their fair share of emperors throughout imperial history 😅
I've read that the "AM I NOT MERCIFUL" that commodus shouts was improvised and you can see the genuine fear in Lucilla's face when he does it.

My all-time favorite movie. The cinematography, the fight choreography, the acting, the directing, the score EVERYTHING about it is as close to perfect as it gets and as much as I love your reactions, I clicked extra quick on this one. Lets go!
She's just protecting Lucius. She knows he would have him executed first...
Good point!
Another comment for those with the patience - there was a "thumbs down" in the gladiatorial arena - but it did not mean 'kill' - it meant "plant your weapon in the sand" and spare that opponent's life - for which there was ample reason.
There was also a "sideways thumb" that meant "slit his throat" - but there was never a "thumbs up". The "sideways thumb" was rather rare - as were fights to the death - for a simple economic reason ; not only were 'ordinary slaves' expensive that only the wealthy could afford - a trained gladiator represented a huge investment - at least a year's worth of training with a weapons master that was also very expensive to retain.
During that time the future gladiator got the best nutrition and training available for health and peak physical conditioning - because it was necessary. As most gladiators were slaves - their masters wanted to recoup that large investment by seeing them win combats on which huge sums of money would be wagered [ Romans loved to gamble ] - a fight in Rome's arenas could bring instant wealth if successful.
So....gladiators were too expensive to simply "kill off" as the film portrays.......my understanding is the fight would end with "first blood drawn".......and the losing gladiator would be taken off to get care and heal up for another day.
There where some fights which were to the death if i recall correctly. But that was a special event, that only happened between two really successful gladiators. A sine missione I believe its called.
Him smelling the dirt has a lot to do with the profession he actually loves--farming. He knows soil and centers himself by doing that.
I always thought it of paying respects to the people that have fought and died on it before him.
Its a ritual. Everything u say is a part of it

A phenomenal film. The score from Hans Zimmer is just perfect.
He’s so flipping talented!!!!
In case no one has mentioned it yet.... the vocalist and composer of the song ("Now We Are Free") you really like in this movie is Lisa Gerrard. She's part of a band called Dead Can Dance... She has released a handful of solo /collaboration albums as well and if you really like the song in this movie I'd suggest starting with her album titled, Duality. She's an amazing musician and vocalist, and I will always mention and recommend her if given an opportunity. Great video and take care.
'Now We Are Free' is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard, so ethereal yet gives feelings of connection to human history and spirit.
Such a great movie. Thank you for reacting to it, Lite!!
It's so crap compared to a classic like Spartacus, but most people here probably haven't seen that one.
@@dtz1000nonsense.. Spartacus was a classic in the traditional sense but it wasn't an outstanding film by any sense of the word. You're looking at it through a bias of "older = better". Which isn't the case at all. This movie was more successful by every quantifiable metric. To say that it's "crap" is an unpopular viewpoint for a reason.
I actually unsubscribed after she said this average movie was "so good" and started her fake crying. Just another dishonest UA-camr imo. Watch Spartacus then tell me this was "phenomenal".

@@LiteWeightReacting It's all about listening to the final three songs in a row, since they all lead into each other. "Elysium", "Honor Him", "Now We Are Free". So good.
This is Ridley Scott's best movie. The brotherhood shown at the end is always a tearjerking moment
Ironically my favourite Scott film has always been his first, The Duellists since I saw it back in the 00s.
The Duellists is criminally underrepresented in his body of work - responsible for launching not just Ridley's own career, but also that of actor Pete Postlethwaite who has a tiny cameo as a generals barber.
Seeing that film at Cannes is what prompted the producers of Alien to hire him as the director which kick started his illustrious career.
There's also a special connection to the author Joseph Conred of the novel The Duellists is based on to both Alien and Aliens.
The ship in Alien is called Nostromo - named for the title of another Conrad novel, and the colonial marines ship in Aliens is called Sulaco, named for the main location in the same novel.
Conrad also wrote the novel Heart of Darkness, which was adapted into the Francis Ford Coppola's film Apocalypse Now in 1979, only 2 years after The Duellists.
Also Alien and Bladerunner. All are equally brilliant.
yeah the guy has a few bangers on his roster ( Black Hawk Down, The Martian was also him ) so its really hard to choose.
One of the most beautiful films of all time! Ridley Scott is a magical little leprechaun genius. I cry like a baby at that ending every single time, especially when Juba buries the figures and says "I will see you again. But not yet." Props to Joaquin aswell for playing that role so frickin well. Even though Commodus is an arsehole, you can see quite clearly what's motivating him, to him it's all unfair. He just wants to be loved but simply isn't loveable so nobody loves him and that's hell! All his actions stem from that.
As you said, the dirt is like chalk and keeps his hands from getting sweaty. But him sniffing the dirt is a reminder that he is a farmer.
To 'ground' himself.
Holy shit! It’s his bubba thing. Like how bubba knows bout skrimps. Maximus knows bout dirt. He sniffs and then thinks, “Yeah we win this war then we can come down here and shrimp this dirt.”
He is one with the dust. He knows he can die and accepts it and is relaxed and can put his skill at work without panic. We all go back to the dust.
RIP OLIVER REED.
his voice is fenomenal . Just listen to and don't look at film when he is talking about being gladiator before their first battle.

Greetings from Montreal Quebec! You have a natural gift to review a masterpiece like Gladiator.
We just got back from Italy and on our tour of the Colosseum, the tour guide heard me say to my gf, "Are you not entertained?" Apparently they love the movie there and the tour guide told us how she went to see Russell Crowe's band when they were in town and at the end, everyone started chanting "Maximus.....Maximus.....Maximus.....Maximus....." Lol
“Who are these guys?!” They’re Pretorian guards, personal guards of ceasar. They don’t report to the army, explaining why they didn’t care.
True they only reported to their comander or some cases the cesar himself, when certain missions required full secretism even from the pretorians, as emperors and kings known throught history, some missions require a certain secrets even in their own personal guard.
One of the best edits I've seen. (This is my favorite movie) love the emotion. Great job. :)

@@LiteWeightReactinghave you seen Joker yet? Now that showcases his vast array of talent.
If you want to see Joaquin in an underrated movie, watch Return to Paradise, which was 2 years before Gladiator.
Also stars Vince Vaughn and Anne Heche, but Joaquin steals the show.
Crowe carries this movie, however. He had to be super convincing as the hero otherwise it would have been incredibly cheesy. It is incredibly hard to play a hero without being either wooden or unbelievable.. He can't camp it up like a villain can. He has to be more subtle.. Crowe did that in spades. We actually believe he IS Maximus. Some of the quiet moments he has- the look in his eyes, a catch in his voice, are quite superb and some of the best acting I've seen. Great acting doesn't have to be over the top. Sometimes quite the reverse. By the end of the movie we loved that rather potato-headed battered gladiator and cried tears for him. That was about Crowe. The most unlikely epic hero ever, given that he isn't at all good looking as most leading men are in roles like this.
Its so sad he never got to see his wife and kid for like 2 and a half years until they were dead 😢, Absolute Masterpiece of a movie! Forever one of my favourites. And will definitely echo in eternity ❤
The men who tried to execute Maximus in the beginning were the infamous Praetorian Guards. The Emperor’s secret service. They were following orders from their new boss.
exactly, Maximus shouts PRAETORIAN and challenges him to fight in the woods

Absolutely loved this watchalong with you, thanks for that. And yes, I have my fingers crossed for a naval battle to be shown(!).
I have an incredible amount of respect for an artist when they actually admit they can't do something... and that is Hans Zimmer. On working on "Now We Are Free" that starts when Maximus falls at the end, he said it needed something more, more than what he could provide. And he found it with the voice of Lisa Gerrard. Bringing her in and having her create those vocals, they gifted that movie and cinema with an incredible score.
Hans Zimmer is seriously the best!
The soldiers in black uniforms were The Praetorian Guarde and to my knowledge they answered only to Caesar himself, within the context of the military hierarchy. They were the equivalent of the Secret Service and their only job was to protect the emperor. Except the police force and fire brigade who were also Praetorians, if memory serves.
In several instances, Caesar answered to the Praetorians! And in a couple cases, the Caesars were themselves former Praetorians.

I had no idea he was Jared Harris's dad! Or that Jared was his son!
As someone who is 61 years old, I'm always a little confounded by the fact that so many people know him from Harry Potter and this but NOTHING ELSE.
I, too, was unaware until today that Jared Harris is his son.
@ericwalker8636 Tell me about it...I'm 65 and, while I can't say I'm confounded,I can say I find it tragic that so many prominent actors are only recognized today cos they happened to have a part in a pop culture movie. The bulk of their career is forgotten, but for a role in a kids film.
Seeing Lite getting emotional even thinking of "Now We Are Free" I was just like
"Welp, better strap in for another emotional mugging down memory lane"
😂
Beautiful reaction one of the most human reactions to this I have seen. Fantastic keep it up
I can’t be the only one that has this movie in their top 10 best movies of all time right?
It's my number 1
The only other revelation in a movie as good as when Maximus reveals his identity is when the corrupt captain in "La Confidential" asks Guy Pearce if he knows Rollo Tomasi.
Why you gotta say?
Don’t remember the exact quote from Wellington, but “nothing is more melancholy than a battle lost than a battle won” fits so well after the opening battle.
Why did they make a sequel to this masterpiece of a movie? All it will do is tarnish the reputation of it. What a horrible idea.
Exactly. I used to like the original, but now I don't even like the original anymore because they are making the sequel. Forever tarnished.
I love watching movie reactions, and I'm happy to have come across your channel. Good stuff!
Thanks David! Glad you liked it!!
:-)
🤗
I'm 77 years old, this is, quite possibly, the best movie I've ever seen.
It is so good!!
Maximus is composition of many legendary Romans. As farmer doing his duty for Rome by leading its armies and offered nigh unlimited power, that would make Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus as main inspiration for Maximus.
Liked and subbed. I had the privilege of seeing this movie in a theater, and a good one at that, and that initial battle sequence left me buzzing. I remember after the movie sitting in the parking lot of the theater just processing everything. Glad you were able to finally experience this movie for yourself.
Fact about the movie. Oliver Reed (Proximo) died while filming Gladiator. After a while he is a CGI.
That’s wild! Thanks for sharing!

Loved the reaction, well done! It is such a great movie, and definitely pulls at the heart strings. I love the emotion that you show.
Joaquin made all others actors feel like quitting after this movie. A lifetime achievement captured on film.
