That's what he meant, he mentioned earlier in the video this was one of Zimmer's earlier movies so he would be listening for things that may have become influences to his future projects.
At 33:36 his gives him little statues representing the divinities who protects home and family. In French "penates". We still use the word in the expression "regagner ses penates" (to go back to one's penates), meaning going back home
Something I never noticed before this reaction (despite watching this movie more than five times) is that Maximus’ armor, the silver embossing on the chest piece? Shows a pine tree, two facing horses and sheltered beneath the tree? A woman and child.
Maximus returning home is a timeless event. A scene like this could be set in any part of the world, in any culture, in any period in history, and it would hit the same.
Great reaction, loved it, really enjoyed the video! 👍💯 In my opinion, this is one of the best (made) movies ever, a true masterpiece. Please also react to these movies (all of them are top tier): The Rocky Horror Picture Show (from 1975), Ghost Ship (from 2002), Thirteen Ghosts (from 2001), Deep Blue Sea (from 1999), The Mummy (the first 2 movies with Brendan Fraser), The Punisher (from 2004), Sucker Punch, House on Haunted Hill (from 1999), Cruel Intentions (from 1999), Vertical Limit (from 2000), American Pie (1 - 3, maybe 4), Police Academy (at least the first 3 or 4 movies), The Naked Gun (all movies), The Pick of Destiny (with Jack Black), Halloween: Resurrection, Sleepy Hollow (with Johnny Depp), Elvira's Haunted Hills, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Halloweentown (the first 2 movies). And all the big/popular Disney movies until the year 2000. 👍❤️💯🔥
Hans Zimmer did some great scores years before this (Backdraft) and years after (The Last Samurai and The da Vinci Code). Epic composer in so many ways ..
Loved your reaction.. would love to see your reaction on the below: - The Green Mile - Training Day - Warrior (Starring Tom Hardy) - Saving Private Ryan - Inglorious Basterds
2:54 I'm actually totally impressed that you knew the legend Richard Harris. You should watch the movie Hawaii. I guarantee you nobody else, but myself, will recommend that movie...but it is a fascinating and great movie!
You should try The Wind and the Lion, with Sean Connery and Katherine Hepburn, it's kind of old [1975] so it's not very well known now but a great movie for its time, it gives a lot of the same vibes as Gladiator.
Great reaction! Hope to see you react to more Russell Crowe films - Master and Commander, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, L.A. Confidential…. he couldn’t do a bad film during his peak years. Subscribed.
Hello, check out a movie called, 1492: Conquest of Paradise. Adventure/Drama (1992). It stars Gérard Depardieu, Siqourney Weaver, Armante Assante. It portrays a version of the travels to the New World by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and the effect this had on indigenous peoples. Directed by Ridley Scott. Thank you, Chris.
21:00 Come on ... we STILL have the same principle as the romans had to "keep the population quiet": *_panem et circensis_* BREAD and GAMES (sport, TV), because IT WORKS!
I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it in the theater (and I saw it as many times as I could afford in the theater before it left, and many times since) it's just... a moral, honest man who wants nothing more than to go home and love his family. "Go to them" gets me every time
Ok..I'm only 14 minutes into your reaction and as a fellow writer and filmmaker, you've already earned my subscription.. Looking forward to what your channel will bring..xo
i really liked your emphasis on lighting. You helped me to focus on the film in a different way. I also like the expertise in music that you bring to your reactions. Count me as a new subscriber.
The truly amazing thing about this movie is not known by most viewers. Oliver Reed (Proximo) died of a heart attack while they still had about 1/4 of the movie still to film! Using film from the editing room floor and some cleaver special effects, Reed 'finished' the film and allowed Djimon Honsou's character to survive at film end (he originally did not). Just amazing.
Funnily enough, in real history the thumbs up meant to kill your opponent. It's easier for us to understand this way though. Such an incredible movie, I went in just expecting great fights, which it has in spades, but I left just full of cinematic bliss.
Since you do TV SERIES ... you should react to *BABYLON 5* ... the (IMO) best written series ever, because it STARTED OUT WITH A FIVE-YEAR-ARC ... and seasons 3 and 4 were written by one man only (the first time that has been done). They won two HUGO awards ... with 45 minute episodes against big budget movies! After you are done compare the writing to "modern garbage" like Loki, Ahsoka or The Acolyte ... and include the BUDGET in those considerations, which was just $650.000 per episode for Babylon 5 (adjusted for inflation that's ~$1,5 million today). *This should make clear what is missing for TV series these days!* [Babylon 5 isnt perfect, because there are quite a few plot holes due to actors leaving the show or JMS simply screwing up some things ... but the general plot is breathtaking, with several high points each season. The sets are also pretty crappy, but they were the first to really use CGI in a TV series ... and THE ACTORS ARE "LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE" for their acting and chemistry.]
The amount of times I said to myself "you're not there yet" ... whenever you were shocked by something on the screen ... "Killing the entire family" is a TRADITION, because AVENGING YOUR FATHER'S DEATH was also traditional in greek and roman mythology.
I really like the work that you put into explaining the significance of cinematography for most of us who don't necessarily see it happening in the moment. A new subscriber. I would love to see your takes on Cinderella Man also with Crowe, and The Last Samurai with Cruise. Both movies also convey many subtleties within the script thrown in to make the audience feel a certain way...Both movies are also classics 👌
I've loved this movie since I was 10 years old and I couldnt even understand the plot points then. Every aspect of the movie was so good that even not knowing what I was missing, it was still amazing. And it only got better as i got older and could understand the story.
Luciano Pavarotti sings a song called "Il Gladiatore" that always resonated deep within me: it was many years before I acknowledged that the film came before it. Regarding your question on performers at the end of their lives, there are two examples that always come to mind: Burgess Meredith in "Grumpier Old Men", and Johnny Cash performing the song "Hurt". They feel like two sides of the same coin.
I wish I could speak more highly of your well-thought-out analytics, but they are marred by your frequent use of a very small set of exclamations which happen to be actual names held in high regard by several billion people globally, and therefore likely a good share of your potential audience...
Actually, The Pirates of the Caribbean music sounds like Gladiator music since Gladiator came out years before.
That's what he meant, he mentioned earlier in the video this was one of Zimmer's earlier movies so he would be listening for things that may have become influences to his future projects.
Joaquin Phoenix was just brilliant in this movie. I cant picture any other actor playing this part better.
Right you are
"What we do in life echoes in eternity"
This has been my favorite movie since the moment I saw it at the age of 12. Nothing has ever come close.
"Who will help me carry him?" 😭😭😭
Ya Ace, that line gets me every time...l'm a movie buff, & this is my all-time favorite...
"You are the son that I should've got." hits so hard.

How about reacting to the GLADIATOR 2 Trailer? 🙂

That second "Am I not merciful" was an ad-lib.
44:35 I'm an alto! Thanks for the shout-out 😊
I love the opening of Maximus walking through the wheat field like he was already in touch with his potential death

Also The Sum of Us film from 1994 was just a beginning of the talent of Russell Crowe.

Really enjoyed this. Subscribed. I can't find one reaction of immortal Beloved with Gary Oldman. Its about beethoven. I'd love to see that.

Oliver Reed played one of my favorite villains, Will Syckes

16:27 Zucchabzr, where the slave traders take Maximus, is in modern-day North Africa (Algeria, I think).
ridely scott really did burn the forest
Incest wasn't unpopular with royal families back then. They needed to keep the bloodline pure. So, it's weird now but not back then.
Believe it or not, Russell Crowe did all his own stunts and is an expert horseman. He has a great love and respect for horses .
Spot on about Zimmer's score..total potc vibes..
Great reaction dude, subbed

The Last Samurai next please!
You’re cute. Subscribed. Lol.
You should check out snatch by guy Ritchie, not related but a great cultural film.
