Omar and his elder brother EJ Cardona, who has also collaborated with VoicePlay are both tenor beasts in the best possible way.
Recommend I Can't Make You Love Me to verify that.

In regards to your question, Farrell is an Irish name and he was a captain in the British army. The Irish would consider him a turncoat. Plus all that money was either stolen tax miney if he was the collector or the soldiers' pay. As the story goes, the robber is hung but becomes a folkhero like Robin Hood that we still sing his story.

It's very old dating back to the 1600s. The first time I heard it was 60 yrs ago when my Irish great-uncle George Houlihan sat at the bar in our house and sang it. I thought he was singing to me (I was 12) but now I think he was trying to get dad to pour him another whiskey (Whack for the Daddio). Peter, Paul and Mary did this, as did the Dublliners, Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem, before Thin Lizzy and Metallica got into it. Glad you did this one - it brings back so many memories.

This is an old Irish folk song from the 1600s. Covered by the Dubliners (original), Thin Lizzy, Metallica, Peter Paul and Mary and many other artists.

Omar is amazing, he was on The Voice a couple of years ago and I think he should have won though he got close. His brother EJ sings with Voctave which is another amazing acapella group you should check out sometime! Also, you would probably enjoy VoicePlay’s cover of I Can’t Make You Love Me with EJ.

A couple seasons ago, Omar was on The Voice. He made it to the top five. (Could have won, but he wouldn’t sing country-western!)
He has sung with Voiceplay many times, and will be part of their lineup when they do a couple concerts in Atlantic City with the band Chicago. But don’t worry if you miss it. It’s being recorded and will be streamed on Apple TV later this year - Chicago and Friends.

The song likely dates back to the 17th Century and deals with the exploits of Patrick Fleming, a highwayman. Poems have been written about Fleming’s deeds named, including The Ballad of Patrick Flemming or Patrick Flemmen he was a Valiant Soldier. These poems are said to be the foundation for Whiskey in the Jar. Many believe that the song and legend inspired John Gay to write The Beggar’s Opera in 1728. The song’s origins come from the traditional folk song “The Highwayman and the Captain.” The song became a “signature song” of the Irish folk band, the Dubliners. It appears upon three of their albums. . During the American Civil War the famed Fighting 69th, composed of almost all Irish, adopted the song as their own anthem but changed the lyrics and called the song “We'll Fight for Uncle Sam.”

Whiskey in the Jar is a song about a notorious Irish highwayman Patrick Fleming who was hanged in 1650, has become one of Ireland’s most beloved songs, a true rebel air that stirs the passions. This song has been covered by Thin Lizzi and Metallica and many others. This is so beautiful. When it came out on Patreon, I had to some research on it, but I love how they made it their own and still showed respect for the original.

It was first sung by an Irish folksinger. 😇 Loved the reaction, especially when Jerzey found the groove. I didn't know the song before this rendition, but I've been enjoying digging into it's history. Thanks for the reaction, guys!

Burl Ives is the eldest I know. Though it is not called Whiskey in the Jar, it's called Kilgarry Mountain on his recording. Words are a bit different but it's the same song. That said, this was really well done. I would say my fav as far as modern covers. And yeah, Omar is pretty awesome. Trivia, he was second place in last years The Voice. You should see their cover of Dream On.

I've heard my share of covers of this classic over the years, most of em very good. I very much like the direction this one took style wise. Most versions are a little faster and a more traditional "Irish" sound. The laid back pacing of this version was a nice change :) And of course, the vocals were very impressive! Was nice to hear everyone in the group get their lil moments to shine. Great reaction as always, guys!

The song is believed to be written in 17th century, though exact date unknown. First recording by Lena Bourne Fish in 1941 under the name Gilgarrah Mountain (Whiskey in A Jar). First release by Frank Warner in 1952 under title Gilgarry Mountain.

I thought Patrick Fleming was the original title for the song, not the author. But it is correct that the earliest known version of the song goes back to 1650. The version made most famous in the modern world is based off a broadside from 1850, performed by the 1960s Irish band, The Dubliners.

Your reaction to "both barrels" was exactly the same as mine!
FYI, the "cannonball roaring" you were attacked by ended in an F1 in chest voice! F1 natural is the lowest we've heard him sing in chest, as opposed to subharmonics. (Which might or might not be related to the fact that he was sick not long before recording this.)

The first and only other things I've heard this was in the early 70s sung by The Irish Rovers. I loved it then as a rollicking fun production, but this one just blew me away. Quite a bit grimmer than The I.Rs version, but the vocals, harmonies, etc., by VP are just outstanding!

TBH, I wasn’t a fan of the way this one started the first few listens. It’s grown on me. I loved the rest of it from the first, and each time, it just gets better.
Loved this reaction. Kudos to you guys for catching the Metallica bass line…no one else has.
