The original is more like 500 years old. It has been changed around many times, but the basic melody and song is very old.

I grew up with versions of this by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem among many others, all traditional folk style. You know how it goes-you often like the first version you hear best. Besides, I was steeped in traditional Irish and Scottish music for a significant part of my life, playing the music and being around many of the Irish folk in the Washington DC and Baltimore area. Anyhow, this is all to say that while I respect this version, it is actually the first VoicePlay song I haven’t really cared for. And that’s fine; I can’t expect to like everything any artist puts out , but I can still respect their work. They always have a good take on any music they release.

I am old and missed the metal era so I’ve never heard Metallica’s version. I believe I might’ve heard the Dubliners version. But I was most familiar with it from a long time ago. I am old enough that I remember this song as sung by Peter Paul and Mary. That was a stripped down version - three voices and an acoustic guitar.
I think that most Irish ballads are sad and about unhappy times. They have a long rocky history of being besieged. My husband used to love to listen to Irish ballads but I often found the lyrics too depressing. Now I’ve heard this several time, I find myself humming it throughout the day. Definitely an earworm.

Just a wild guess, but: Folk music and fairy tales were kept alive by the everyday people - which, in Europe, meant the poor. Anyone who had money, like Captain Farrow, was probably a younger son of the landed (land owning) gentry, and - given the location of this one - probably English in an Irish country. Not loved. Using that lens, this becomes a story of 'their' guy outwitting, robbing, killing the oppressor. Or - Robin Hood, all over again.

Definitely a ballad. It tells a story. Some say that Captian Farrow...an Irish name...was a turncoat that was a tax collector for the British which made him even more hated by yhe Irish.

This sing is from the 1600's. Most likely was a capella first. They did a beautiful job with it

Thin Lizzy released the song in 1976 and will always be my favourite. Metallica covered their version over 20 years later and dedicated it to the fantastic Phil Lynott, Thin Lizzy's lead singer. I heard alot of similarities between Voiceplay's version and Thin Lizzy's vocals with obvious changes as you'd expect 😊

I think it resonated so well in the Irish tradition because the guy robbed was’Captain’ Farrell and so seen as an occupier. Don’t think that was necessarily true in the original, but that’s how it was seen while Ireland was fighting for self-governance. Also, I’m pretty sure there are versions where he doesn’t actually kill the Captain. I think I remember one where she watered his guns and so wet gunpowder doesn’t actually shoot. A very real betrayal.

I agree about Jenny (in the versions I know) put water in gun, it didn’t fire, and ‘a prisoner I was taken’.

It is not originally by the Dubliners. The song as well as the story is from the1600’s,So the covers are countless. This cover is great!

Hey Zack fun reaction. Denis from King Family reacts said he thought this had a “80’s Journey” vide. Once he said that I can definitely hear it.

I remember listening to The Dubliners sing this. My husband had lots of Irish music on records.
    I enjoyed hearing Voiceplay's version.

The first time I heard this I was 12 and my Irish great-uncle was singing it at the bar in our house trying to get my dad to refill his glass whiskey. After that, Peter Paul and Mary, Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem, and Roger Whitaker. I haven't heard any of the new ones until VoicePlay. Remember that England and Ireland were at war for 8 or 900 yrs. The Irish felt justified taking anything from the British army or navy since they were invaded and often killed the Irish people. It didn't turn out well.

This one took a while to grow on me, but it's more because of the lyrics of the song are depressing, rather than Voiceplay's wonderful arrangement.

The Thin Lizzy version is the definitive version, IMO, though VoicePlay's version is great too, of course. Metallica basically copied the Thin Lizzy version, making it a little more metal. It's a great version, but it's disappointing that they didn't really make it their own, as VoicePlay did here. You should really check out the Thin Lizzy version at some point.
