Glad to hear more Voiceplay here! If you liked this one, you need to check out “Nothing Else Matters” and “Hellfire,” and maybe “Dream On.” By the way, the high tenor, Eli, pronounces his name as “Elly” (rhymes with belly). 😊 You can never have too much Voiceplay and Home Free (and the individual member artists/collabs) on your channel, as far as I’m concerned. And have you discovered The Hound and the Fox? A great place to start with them is their collab with Adam Chance of Home Free, in particular “Going over Jordan” (actually I think it’s really called “Wayfaring Stranger”).
Yeah, the crushed it!! Voiceplay takes a song that can get really boring and they twist and turn it into a masterpiece arrangement that keeps you on edge for the duration!!
I'm a HUGE Voiceplay fan. Glad you are checking back in with them, because its been awhile! Eli (still pronounced "Elly" lol) is totally channeling his inner Negan. Anthony {last name pronounced "Garjoola") has guested with them several times now, and he is an absolute phenom! Some of the riffs and runs he pulls off make my brain come to a screeching halt! Cesar was his usual sassy self...so glad he is a permanent member now! Layne is an absolute vocal sound effect maniac..I can't wrap my brain around some of the sounds he makes. And of course, we all knew Geoff would blow away the bass that this song is so well known for, and he did not disappoint!!! (But when does he ever disappoint??? Rhetorical question LOL) Loved your reaction!! So much fun!
@@DravenGal LMAO! I use it all the time and know others that do, too. If it isn't a word, it really should be! I could have been properly snooty and said "Has been a featured guest singer with them previously" But I was lazy, and not snooty. LOL
I am too. Been wondering if you were ever going to react to them and Geoff again. I miss your reactions to them Ken. They have so many awesome videos for you to catch up on. Welcome back 😊
Always good to get more Voiceplay! This was the third in their 'post-apocalyptic' look, the others being 'Dream On' and 'Warriors'! I will second the requests for 'Nothing Else Matters', 'Hellfire', 'Creep' (arranged by Eli!) and Geoff's return to the dwarves with 'I See Fire'..!
It is purely their voices though - just multitracked in places where they wanted more. With VoicePlay, if there's an instrument other than voice, you will SEE it.
Voiceplay always pays homage to the original, but is never cookie cutter. We love the Voiceplay spin. I am very old, wrong generation to have known this one, but it never matters. They make me love everything they do! They just released Whiskey in the Jar. It's an old Irish folk song that's been covered by everyone from Peter Paul and Mary to Thin Lizzie and Metallica. Voiceplay's is not like the others.
Indeed it is not... It's much better! I'm not familiar with this one either, but VP still made something even I can appreciate. As to Whiskey in the Jar, I first heard that sung by The Irish Rovers in the late 60s early 70s (college maybe? Perhaps even the Lawrence Welk Show.) I can't quite remember anymore except that I bought their LP of Irish songs, including The Unicorn Song which they made world famous in 1968. (Today's little children might enjoy that one!)
They really make this one their own. They always put a helluva spin on things. Glad to see you revisiting them! If you haven’t seen Geoff’s cover of Jack’s Lament yet it’s so spooky good! Voice acting at its finest! Great reaction from you as always! Oh and btw.... Halocene and Lauren Babic just dropped a new cover too. 😉
Great reaction. You said it yourself. There is no flaws. The thing with VoicePlay is of course the personal skills each of them have, but the best is that they are exeptionally good when they are singing together and when they do, they help eachother to shine,
Yes, even Geoff's speaking voice shakes walls! Maybe I'm imagining it, but on several recent vids (so watch out for them) they've had BTS outros, including with Geoff's solo work, with Geoff doing the voiceover, and it sounds even deeper than it used to!
Thank you so much Ken! I thought this was a killer arrangement and first time I had heard Anthony. He has quite a voice, those runs are jaw dropping. I have a lot of fun listening to your commentary! Listening to what you have to say gives me a chance to learn more about what I’m listening to.
This is one of several Voiceplay songs (along with some other groups) that I have in a playlist for when I need to get off my butt and get stuff done. That driving beat makes you want to move. Great reaction, Ken.
I am definitely a VoicePlay fan! And I loved this cover. They always manage to pay homage to the original while making it their own and I'm here for it! Great reaction! ❤
Great reaction. I liked VoicePlays interpretation of that song immensely and so far have not grown tired of hearing it again and again. Actually I like it way more than the original. They all are awesome, but Layne legitely kills it.
Thank you Ken for another great reaction to Voice Play. Nice to see you again. You won't know what your missing if you don't do a reaction video to Voice Plays cover of Hell Fire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Geoffs regester is getting rock higher now. Also Geoffs cover of Jack's Lament. From the Nightmare Before Christmas. His acting skills are shining through with these two. Their two best covers ever. You will think these two are their best ever as well.
You have got to do Drunken Sailor by Voiceplay. It is so much fun. Features Jose Rosario Jr (was in My Mother Told Me) and previous member Matt "Bucky" Buckner. Speaking of My Mother Told Me.... Voiceplay also did a follow-up to it with "Valhalla Calling". Same characters. Except Cesar took over Jose's character. It is absolutely amazing. For Geoff I recommend "Sound of Silence", Ghost Riders In The Sky ", "Folsom Prison Blues", Jack's Lament. So many amazing videos you've missed.
This is one of my favorites from them. I enjoy their sort of series of post-apocalyptic videos. Not so fond of the Disney stuff. This really is fabulous and Anthony is a great addition. Oh - and perfect reference to West Side Story.
Gar - jewl' - ah. This shopping mall now houses not only Pattycake Productions (in what used to be a Hallmark store) but several other studios. This venue used to be one of the big department stores. VP got someone with a key to let them in to use for this. They cleaned up some of the graffitti. You mentioned the post-apocalyptic feel. VoicePlay has done 3 over the last 3 yrs beginning with Warriors (Imagine Dragons), Dream On (Aerosmith) and this one. I don't know how much of VPs recent work has crossed your path but these are terrific: Nothing Else Matters (Metallica), Golden Hour, In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins), Valhalla Calling (Miracle of Sound), Drunken Sailor, Hellfire (Disney - hunchback of Notre Dame) and one from last week going back to 1600s - Whiskey in the Jar.
In their terms of post-apocalypse...this is the 3rd song....1st was warriors, 2nd was Dream On, 3rd is this song...Glad to see you back re-visiting VoicePlay....>^^
I got started on this journey by listening to a cover of Hallelujah by Lucy Thomas. Then I started watching reaction videos. One of the reactors to Lucy Thomas also reacted to Geoff Castellucci covering Sixteen Tons. I learned that Geoff was the bass singer in the a cappella group VoicePlay. Now I have three rabbit holes to go down. Needless to say I am enjoying myself tremendously. By the way, since you reacted to Hallelujah, I have not seen you react to any more Lucy Thomas Music. What gives with that? Don't you think it is about time for some more Lucy Thomas?
Have to say that Anthony's name is not Garguila, it's Gargiula, and pronounced Garjoola. He has an incredible voice and has appeard with VP a few times. And I love this one.
Quick note: It's Eh-LEE, not EEE-lie. The extra fun thing about this is that it's the third post-apocalyptic video (Warriors and Dream On are the others). In the first two, they said the zombie hordes just out of camera range while the guys sang to save themselves. Between the first two videos, both Earl and J. None were lost to the zombies, and they picked up Cesar and Omar along the way. However, by this time, they've become the bad guys, so we're not 100% sure what happened to Omar... 😜
This is filmed in an abandoned department store in the same complex as their Patty Cake Studios. Check out their awesome version of Phil Collins' In The Air Tonight. It's filmed behind Patty Cake Studios with Layne's dad's car..
Oh man, I'm so happy you're back to Voiceplay! I always enjoyed your thoughts on them. You have sadly been missing one of the best parts about Voiceplay though, their medleys! They have a few Disney ones (Moana, Little Mermaid, their ACA Top Tens) as well as Boy Bands in Five Minutes, Queen in Five Minutes, and a bunch more! You can truly see their incredible talent both with singing and with the arrangements in their medleys.
Eli rhymes with Jelly. This reminds me of the movie The Warriors from the late '70s, all the warren gangs gathered in New York, and the Warriors were falsely accused of killing a leader and then had to fight their way back to Coney Island to the safety of their home turf.
I'd love to see you react to VoicePlay's cover of Nothing Else Matters. As a rabid Metallica fan, I may have earned a spot in hell for loving it just as much as the original. (Sorry, James)
Def a VoicePlay and Geoff Castellucci fan!! Also, a Voctave fan--11 person acapella group extraordinaire. They've been producing a lot of videos lately that I would love to see you react, too--Heroes & Villains, Somewhere, The Trolley Song, etc.
I appreciate your attitude, Ken. Of course it's perfectly ok when a band that usually sings a cappella adds something that enhances the music. Sometimes it's even an actual musical instrument--usually shown clearly in the video. That being said, I believe they made all the sounds here, with minimal mechanical/elecronic production aids. Layne, however, is only one man, so I assume there's some layering going on. But he (or one of the others) made all the sounds. (Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. A lot of folks here know more of BTS info than I do.)
This was filmed in an abandoned department store near Pattycake Productions. All the graffiti was already there. Also..... Geoff Castellucci will be premiering his new video "Unshaken" today at noon est. He brought back the 4 ghost riders from "Ghost Riders In the Sky" when they were alive. It is beautiful and epic.
Since poor Anthony gets his surname butchered by pretty much anyone, it's pronounced "Gar-joo-lah" (I suppose his family has Italian origins, and that's how you say that surname in Italy). Great reaction as usual, Ken! Cheers! //Rick
Yes, I’m a VoicePlay fan! I love this version! I wonder what the difference is between riffs and runs? I always hear these two words together and I don’t know what is what. Thank you for this reaction!
Hi Ken , I know I'm not able to be a contributer but would you please please do a reaction to Voice Plays cover of Hell Fire from the Hunchback Of Notre Dame. Geoff will surprise you with his vocal range. Also Voice Plays Halloween cover of Thriller by Michael Jackson. They blow it out of the ball park. Also Voice Plays cover of Be Prepared from The Lion King. Geoff is scar. His voice range just keeps getting better & better.
Also HUGE VP fan... did you get the sound of Geoff's finger gun? Partly Layne, partly added sound I've heard. I think this one is the VP song with the most added sound-effects... which confuses me a little as I'm a real dofus in music. Just one year ago I found this group per chance and since then a new world has opened to me: as a proud patron I enjoy the BTS and learn a lot. Liked your reaction. Would have liked more comments... 😅🎉❤

You know it's funny, but I don't like the original of this song at all. I find it frustrating to listen to because I feel like it always promises a payoff we never, ever get. This version I absolutely love because I feel like it does give us the emotional build the original hints at and never really delivers.
Hi, Kon, couldn't watch your reaction. Oh, sorry, did I get your name wrong? Well, it's only fitting, since you continually, on Voiceplay reactions, mispronounce Eli's name.
