I am a very raw beginner and this video was an amazing instruction in knife making. The detailed explanation was so very helpful to my learning experience. Thank you, my friend!
so glad it helped!
Man, great work with this build! I love the non-power-tool version.
Thanks James!
Thanks for sharing. Made my first file knife this weekend. My 1084 steel arrived this morning and picked up a 1”x30” belt and disc combo from harbor freight. This is fun!
No problem and its a great hobby
I’ve really been wanting to get into bladesmithing… like REALLY bad. Been looking at belt grinders and kilns but you’ve given me a little motivation to try it with cheap tools first. If I love that long enduring process I’m bound to stick with the craft with the proper tools! Only thing I’ve ever liked about my chef job was using the knives… so thinking I’d enjoy my life a lot more if I could just make a living creating my beloved knives 😂
Lol yes go for it! You can do it just have patience. Making things with your hands is extremely rewarding!
Concise, no xtra nonsense… liking the videos my friend… secret tip.. I noticed you have an etched finish.. two cool tips… drip like ten drops of oil (wd40 etc) into a cup of your etching mix which is ferric chloride… then slowly plunge the knife in and leave… the oil resists and you get a pattern like a Damascus… second cool tip… after ferric chloride submerge the blade in rat poison… watch the results!! Looks awesome
Thanks Charlie! Ill have to try that sometime
Had you not experienced the coping saw mishap, I wonder how many of us would have done the same. Thanks for taking one for the team. You gave me the education and confidence to try this! Great video!
very cool good luck
really cool
I like the way you made a very clean look of the blue knife, very nicely done Wengel. 👍👍
Love this video Cole. I love ‘em all. One of my favorite things is your brutal honesty. Showing every little pitfall and mistake. It truly helps us all learn even more. And might even give me the courage to start including all the goofs I make into my own videos! Well done brother.
Thanks Spencer!
shaping the scales with the coping saw made me appreciate hand sanding!! hahahaha
Yeah probably won't be doing it again any time soon lol
Looks great......if you didn't bring to our attention the placement of the pins, I would've looked it over.....I am currently building this as my very first knife.....thank you for the very detailed video....Subscribed!!!!
You're probably the finest teacher I've seen on here
Looks good!
Thank you for taking part!
Excellent video! Love the look and finish you've done.
I think it looks good ! Mistake or Not you did a good job. Very educational
You are a really great teacher, excellent explanations!!!
How hot do You heat it to normalize it, and for how long?
And how hot do You heat it for the second time and how long?
Very nice job. It's looking really good. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Keep making. God bless.
Thank you Jared!
@@Wengelsworkshop your very welcome my friend.
Sir
When did you make the cutting edge of the knife before quenching or before tempering ?
Your voices and explanation are much better
putting an actual cutting edge on the knife should be the absolute last thing you do. so after quench and after the knife is completely finished
both knives are awsome!
thank you ,great work !!
Great finish. I got one coming just a lil more clean up
Thanks jesse! look forward to seeing it!
Hey, I really like your vids, will you be doing more in the future?
I think that knife looks great. You could recenter the pin by taking a little material off the back, making it a little more narrow.
Thanks Sam! And yeah I may still consider doing that.
It seems like you can see the file “catching” on the raw steel as well as the different sound it makes. Does that sound right?
im not sure what you mean. if you are saying that once the steel is hardened the file wont cut into the steel and make a higher pitch. yes that is the case
@ it seems as though it was grabbing on the non-heat treated steel and then “skating” on the treated steel.
After the heat treat, how did you get the final edge on it? Was that just using the sandpaper?
Fantastic tutorials!
awesome howto videos thanks. gonna check out the other ones too. trying to make mini real knifes diy. stainless and files mostly lol. cherry branch that fell. got a angle grinder but think my dremmel might be better for tiny work tho.
Thanks Mike!
I think both turned out great. But I do like the composite scales a lot
Thanks Jay!
What forge is the you are using. It looks simple
3:08 you have to heat up the whole blade??? also the handle to the red colour? and what about tempering the steel?
Good build and vid :)
Thank you!
next time grind the scales to the shape of the knife tang before glue up leaving about 3/8 of matieral so you can finish by sanding it down
What should I do if my steel is already non magnetic?
Trace the tang on the outside of one of the scales before glue up. Then trim to that line before you shape the handle…
Yeah I 100% should have traced them to the outside.
Man that’s a bad ass knife… You’re just being OCD about the pin…😂 It looks awesome!
Heloo ! Very nice knife it's unique good job. Your forge look Very interesting. Can you please give some details if you buy this or you build your self? Thanks and good regards from Belgium
youtube coffee can forges and a bunch of videos will come up. i used a 1 gallon paint can for mine but they are easy to make.
Yes, I had doubts, I wasn't sure, one last question, what material did you fill inside the container, what refractory product. Thank you

@@florincheciches4330 I believe I mixed plaster of Paris and sand. It will tell you in the videos if you UA-cam coffee can forge
Why do you need scale liners?
used motor oil work okay?
i would not recommend
I like the acid etch... is it 100 percent strength? How long did you leave it in the acid bath? Thanks, J-
generally i think people use distilled water and do roughly half and half or a third acid and 2/3rds water. i usually do baths for about 5 min and if i want it darker clean and repeat.
Around how long did it take you to make this knife?
maybe like 15 hours? not sure really.
What is that forge setup?
type coffee can forge into the search and there are a bunch of videos showing how to make them
Beautiful knife, if that pin placement bothers you to much I’d be glad to take it off your hands
Lol. Thanks Patrick!
Man muß die Klinge länger machen wie den Griff , und dann werden es Messer .😊
Wow..8 months without a single video..We all miss your blade content..We know you didn't just stop making blades..show us what you have been working on..
Lol I appreciate you noticing. Ive been good, just super busy with other projects and life. Been about 3 months since i made a knife, but that will change when i finish my kitchen remodel.
@@Wengelsworkshop yeah life happens all the time..at the end of the day it's night..lol
Man, why did you stop making knife videos?
initially i was renovating my home. But then i wanted to focus the limited free time i had on making knives rather than recording and editing. i think about making some updated videos on how i do things now and some random tutorials. hope you find the videos helpful either way
If that pin is bothering you too much I'll send you my address and you can just ship that eye sore me. Problem solved.😁

Can I buy the blue knife?
I think I'm gonna hold onto it. Thanks for the interest though!
Anyone here would help me to get the tools and material please I would like to get into making knives. Thank you
