    That spot on the greenling looks like an eye. I read that ling cod eat them from the tail so it might be a recent evolutionary adaptation.

      Hmm possibly! Localised adaptation too. That was one of the few places I had seen that.

    Beautiful video, I really enjoyed it! As Matthew J. said the dark spots might be mating related. I've read that during mating season the males can go dark. I've never actually seen it myself.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  3 роки тому +1

      Possible. I've seen the same thing on the females though. If you go to 7:08 on this video you can see an example. I've only ever seen that on greenling from this general area. ua-cam.com/video/SoIonlotnhg/v-deo.html

    What travel dive bag would you recommend to fit spearguns, long fins (approx. 39 inches ), wetsuit, and all the other necessities of spearfishing. I love your enthusiasm for sustainability. If we all do our part the world will be happier and healthier. the selective nature of spearfishing never ceases to amaze me. " Take what you need, not what you can have."

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  2 роки тому

      100% and I couldn't agree more. I appreciate the comment! I love my mako backpack. It's durable and fits everything perfectly. All the gear you listed and then some. If you can ship to the states shipping is free over $100. Otherwise, to Canada, it's pretty expensive. www.divingsports.ca sells the same bag under a different manufacturers name though. So a few options!

    Love the video, nicely done. Maybe you could explain your reasoning behind limiting the ling to one per person. I kind of feel that if I were to go on a charter, spending all that money and CO2 to get there, I'd want to retain my legal limit. Certainly if you can get in the water once or twice a week, one fish is lots, but if it's more of an annual trip, I'd want to get that fish vacuum packed in my freezer so I can enjoy it for months to come. Certainly the regular fishing charters aim to get their customers their legal limit and nobody feels bad about it. I know sustainability is very important to you, so I look forward to the reasoning behind it.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  3 роки тому +4

      We take a maximum of 4 people. The possession limit in the area is 6. If each person harvested their limit on a two day trip we would be removing 24 Lingcod from the various reef. Anglers have a lot more depth to play around with but the majority of us who spearfish around here don't push 15m. That still leaves a lot of coastline but we don't want to put pressure on any of the areas. I'd have a hard time sleeping plus we want to lead by example. I understand what your saying but I'd rather bring home 1 Lingcod than 0. And if people don't follow best practices that will be the case.

    Excellent trip. If people are unhappy with spearfishing charters it's because they are unaware of how selective it can be. More a sign of jealousy than anything else. Mike.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  3 роки тому +1

      I think people are just protective of their area which I can appreciate. But at the end of the day we are running a tight ship. I think we are the only charter is Canada who doesn't allow participants to limit out. Plus, if someone wants to hit some remote reef off the west coast VS hitting East Sooke for the 50th time I consider that a win for the ecosystem. Again, it's all about spreading out and exploring imo. I don't even bother spearfishing in heavily populated areas anymore. To much pressure as is.

    What size gun are you shooting with mostly?

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  2 роки тому

      I use a 75cm. Most people do around British Columbia. Powerful enough for some range if the visibility is good and the fish are skittish but not to much power for hunting in rocks. It's a good overall size.

  • @WAFishQuest
    @WAFishQuest 3 роки тому +2

    I still don't get people being mad about a spearo charter. Think of how many more fish a hook and line charter boat takes with 6-12 anglers.

    Hold on I thought spearfishing was illegal in Canada?

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  3 роки тому

      It depends on what province you live in and salt vs fresh. Many provinces prohibit spearfishing but it's fair game in British Columbia. Freshwater here is heavily restricted and we can't spear salmon but overall it's open season.
