  • Hand Harvesting Octopus | Freediving Remote British Columbia
    My octopus dinner... In all seriousness, octopus are a very sustainable source of seafood. Especially compared to the likes of our struggling salmon and rockfish populations. Hate all you want, but my protein lived wild and free. can you say the same thing about the food you consume? I hope you all enjoy this epic and unforgettable adventure we had off the rugged west coast of Bamfield, British Columbia.

    Beautiful British Columbia! Nothing beats it! I’m loving these videos. I learn something new in almost every one of them. And you’ve got to wonder how many octopuses you’ve swam past without noticing. They have some crazy good camouflage

    I'm going to watch this tomorrow. But shows how smart your audience is by not freaking out. Octopus are smart and really cool, but have such a short lifespan. I have to imagine since they claim a den, when one is harvested, another that may not have survived otherwise moves in relatively quick. Wishful thinking perhaps. But again, they're so short-lived and there is only so much habitat.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  2 роки тому +1

      For sure man! Habitat destruction, urchin barrens, global warming, over fishing and plastic pollution are much bigger threats to octopus than I. They are amazing but also sustainable. I mean, I could have shot one of the few rockfish I saw that day but I wouldn't have felt good about that.

      True, but you also don't need to make a reenactment documentary about forming an emotional connection with one either... My channel focuses on ethical and sustainable harvesting so catching an octopus goes with the territory. Over 99.5% of my diet is plant based and the other .5% is from seafood I sustainably harvest. What would you suggest I eat as an alternative?

      @@PNWSamson Hey Chris, first of, I love your channel and your interest in our British Columbia's natural environment, your always promoting responsible harvest , just can't help to think about all the people who will see this video and say " hey I wanna do that" and maybe not be so responsible, my apologies I do get emotional with regard to certain animals, it shouldn't be different than cows or chickens but it is.
      Still thank you for all the video content you post.

      @@markfromwestcoastwoodcraft7633 No worries dude and I get it. Octopus are hard to find though so even if people wanted to look for them it would be a struggle. Plus, the majority of the time they are in places that are unreachable even if they did. I hope people watch my videos and learn to follow the best practices and possibly make some lifestyle changes that are less destructive to our environments. Doubtful, but possible! Cheers man.

    Thanks!

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  Рік тому

      That's a neck weight. Having all your weight on your belt makes your back sore after a long day in the ocean. Thickness for swimming or diving? If diving, 7mm if you plan to dive all year. It would have to be an open cell wetsuit and specifically designed for freediving/spearfishing though. Surf suits don't cut it.

    Gorgeous shots, I miss seeing the Anemone, Rock Scallops and other creatures of the west coast reefs. I'm glad you started a Patreon, I live on a small fixed disability income but I will see what I can put aside next month for you, it's the least I can do for you to say "Thanks" for the wonderful and remarkable underwater footage from the area around Vancouver Island! It might not be much, but I will do what I can!! Enjoy the Octopus, I always liked it beaten to a pulp and then grilled and served with a lemon to juice over it! Yum!

      Dude, don't worry about it! Honestly don't give me anything. I don't want your money. The fact that the videos bring you enjoyment is good enough for me. If people have some extra change to throw down I'm stoked but I don't want anyone to feel like it's an obligation. I watch countless UA-camrs and I've yet to do anything besides buy some merch. I always looked at my videos as the "pay it forward" version of supporting my favorites but I'm now in a situation where a little help from those who can would be nice. But thanks man, I appreciate the offer! And I'll probably cook it up very similar. It's on the freezer for now, I'll do a little cook video when the time comes!

      Do you buy seafood? Because I don't. Did you know roughly 70% of all humpback whales off our coast get entangled in fishing gear at some point? They suffer deep painful cuts and will often die as a result. When octopus crawl into commercial crab and prawn traps do you think they are released? No, they get turned into halibut bait or sold in market. If you buy seafood you are responsible many more octopus causalities than I. Only difference is people who buy seafood in store somehow believe their hands are clean. I won't even get into the way animals are treated in farms or the CO2 emissions that are released as a result... 99.5% (or higher) of my diet is plant based and the other .5% from seafood caught the most sustainable way how. I hope you troll people in grocery stores too.
