Nice job w /these videos man. Great editing and tunes too. Just stumbled across your channel tonight and am really enjoying watching. As a Nanaimo boy myself and marine tourism guide by trade I'm digging that I'm familiar with the places you go. Great to see your level of respect and adoration for our precious place we call home. We share that attribute. You've inspired me to up my game this winter and do a lot more free diving as I've limited myself to just snorkeling around the shallows in the summer waters. Thanks for that and keep up the good work. PS...thanks to your family as well for letting you get away so much. This work is important especially for our youth.😊Cheers.
Cheers, I appreciate the words! I definitely owe my wife a lot. I take my kids along whenever possible but she spends a lot of time on the shore watching over them while I'm in the water. I definitely got lucky, some of my buddies are lucky to get out once every month or two! Definitely get out, just make sure you invest in the proper gear. I love summer but I'm looking forward to winter diving. The visibility around Nanoose bay can be 15+ meters some days. Can't wait!
Thanks to your videos I bought a wetsuit and I'm ready to start learning to freedive. I live in Victoria just off Dallas Rd so the playground is minutes away. Appreciate you sharing your adventures. It's aspired me to get under the water.
@@PNWSamson Long ago you promised to teach us about that lead thing around your neck. I might have missed the video. If not, I'm still looking forward to it! :)
Sick trip, thanks for letting us crash at your place and making the trip out! Need to dive together more soon! After seeing your vid I'm considering the insta cam even more now!
Agreed man and don't sweat it at all! Yeah, the insta is sick. Wish the focal length was a bit closer but I'm still really happy with it. I'd be interested to see how it compares with what you've captured over the weekend.
My kids bloodline come from Ukee! Nice.. love it, because I know where you're at. The area was a blessing definitely! That's where I first tried Herring eggs, and gumboot chiton. It takes a man(woman too), to pull the plates off, and take a bite...thank goodness it's not a slug....or is it???? Lol 🍻❤️ Ps...Nelly lived right behind me in Terrace BC. Her family is abundant there haha.
Oh no way, maybe Nelly mode makes sense! And that's awesome. I've heard gumboot chitons are pretty vile. Now you have me curious! Might have to try em haha.
Haha yeah! Sometimes I wish I filmed with a GoPro mask. I looked to my right and he was swimming along with me. I felt a little bad. Happy you enjoyed the video!
Thanks for watching. The sport can be as expensive as you want it to be. Lots to see from shore in most coastal areas, travel and boat rides are awesome but a luxury. Definitely a treat when they happen!
Good to know! I find there is a certain point where my mask leaks. A little more and I'm good and a little less and I'm good. I was leaking on the first dive, it's annoying aha.
It's all about relaxation. Laying on the surface motionless and calming your body for 2-3 minutes before you dive. The more relaxed you are, the longer your breath holds will be. Also stretching makes a big difference too. Best option is to get certified if you go to depth. They go over all the safety protocols and all that. Definitely some risk involved with freediving if you don't understand what happens to your body when you hold your breath and dive.
Cheers! Just my Google pixel 7 pro believe it or not. It has a cinematic mode with the blurred background. Unfortunately it will only shoot in 1080p with that setting though.
Hmm, I responded to this but it didn't post. They clarify that Cabezon are sculpin but not that they are illegal to spear. They probably did that so people don't think it's a free for all, even though they should have a limit of 1-3 in my opinion. If you look under the "it's unlaw too" page they don't mention it being illegal to spearfish Cabezon, that's what I go off. I've been spearfishing them openly for years and the DFO hasn't called it out for it. I believe it's an oversight and that's how I treat it. I do appreciate the concern though, cheers! www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/illegal-illegales-eng.html
Yep! I have a few collectors tables with glass tops and I throw my ocean finds in to display. I also have some antique printer trays that I hang on the wall and fill with sea glass. It complements all my nautical decor nicely.
@@PNWSamson ah I see ya checking the regs again all areas on the west coast of the island are open! That's fantastic guess it's time to suit up next weekend when I am on the island! Thanks for the info!

Great video! So cool to see what we have on our coast and makes me excited to learn to freedive. Please keep the videos coming!

Amazing man that's awesome, thanks for sharing that with me. You have a beautiful area to explore. Enjoy the journey!
Nice shots! Sick vis as well 🤟🏻
Thanks! And yeah, we got lucky. Apparently it was pretty nasty a few days prior.
The lingcod almost jumped on the spear. Cool thanks!
Haha yeah, it must have had a bad day. Made my job easy! Cheers!
Nice haul and great vids. Now where is that Wolf Eeel fish...
Thanks man! And yeah, that was my goal. No Wolf eel this time! 😑
Oh... That last spot, mixed with the music was spectacular!
Yeah man it was as something else. I wish I didn't get cold! I was crossing my fingers and hoping to see an octopus. No dice!

@@PNWSamson have you thought about getting one of those macro lenses that clip onto the outside of the case, change the focus on the fly
Those were some deep dives by the looks of it. You made spearfishing look easy.

amazing video

Wow, awesome shots!!
Thanks! With the camera or Speargun? Haha
Both!! Haha
That was beautiful underwater. Thank u.
Yeah, no worries! That last spot is what dreams are made of.
very nice hobby but also looks costly: boat, hotel acc; gas; nevermind the gears..thanks for the vid, at least we get to see

Nice bro. Love your channel. Defs making me want to get into free diving in BC coast. I live in Van but planning on moving to sunshine coast!
Nice! I love diving around the sunshine coast. Skookumchuck was my favorite dive site in that general area. It's spectacular.
@@PNWSamson Awesome dude. Cheers brotha!
Those Swellfish boats are nice!
Yeah they are pretty dope! Minus all the fancy attachments that like to grab your wetsuit haha.
Quite a haul for opening weekend! I’d have been happy to watch the 4 1/2 minutes on the cutting room floor…
Haha cheers. Yeah, the underwater stuff is definitely the highlight!
Props man 🙌🏻. You’ll never catch me down there 😂

Hey heads up, dfo has clarified cabezon are sculpins and illegal to take with spear.
that's one of those stupid rules with no rationalization, limit for a rod is still 8 per day though
I agree completely, but just because the law is stupid doesnt mean we dont get in trouble. Stay safe out there guys.

6:16 is that an octopus?
I don't think so. But I've reviewed footage and have seen them in the past!
Love my gun (wood)
What type do you have?
@@PNWSamson JBL Woody Mid Handle I think
@@PNWSamson Mahogany Wood
@@dylonswiatek Nice, I had the JBL woody 29. It was a pretty dope gun too!
What do you do with all of your sea glass? Do you display it?
Yep! I have a few collectors tables with glass tops and I throw my ocean finds in to display. I also have some antique printer trays that I hang on the wall and fill with sea glass. It complements all my nautical decor nicely.
I live east coast NewBrunswick and I am not legally allowed to spear fish. I should move there
Yeah, so dumb. No recreational Lobster opening too. I'm from Nova Scotia, that pisses me off too.
12,500 lbs of lingcod in one day?? That's 625 20lb lingcod! :-0
Yeah dude, crazy eh? And think of the bycatch involved with bringing up 12,500lbs of ling...
In this particular dive, what's the average depth?
Hmm, the average was around 10m. Didn't go much past 15m.
I thought lingcod and rockfish season starts after april30th?
It depends on the area. The outside waters run from April 1 to Nov 15. The inside from May 1 to Sept 30.
