I feel like you're the only reviewer of his game thats honest about the graphics on Switch lol. Exactly why I decided opt out of a review copy and just wait to get it on PC

ShadowEliteHD This makes me wonder if the Ps4 version has better resolution and frame rate than the switch version. If it is a big improvement on the ps4 than I might get the PS4 version instead of the switch version.
@@Wallie33. super late to reply but i just beat the game on ps4. the framerate is 30fps. resolution is okay throughout. i think pc version is 60fps tho

Great review, I played the vita version and it felt like persona lite to me. It's the kind of JRPG you play when you have completed all the others you've finished

usually when a game has multiple releases for all the different systems, don't go for the nintendo version kuz lower resolution and they always play at 30fps
If you’re looking for a replacement, Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE Encore is a fantastic game made by the Persona makers, and mixed in with Fire Emblem lore/characters.
Aww I was hoping for more from this one. I'll leave it on my wishlist I guess

I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that this game's scenario was written by Satomi Tadashi, who also wrote the scenarios for Persona 1 and 2. Makes the persona comparison feel a little more warrented lol.
I think on the Vita, I would have loved it. Some of the combat reminds me of Transistor.
But on the Switch, the preformance and price are totally unacceptable.
Its bad grafics unless on a monitor or tv its a good game if your not on handheld mode

I just beat it recently and loved the characters and story a ton I know this is old but I really don't see where all the bland characters and story complaints come from. I do get the graphics complaints, I liked the style of the graphics but the animations did kinda kill them, although the art was really good and the music was amazing.
I played it on ps4 so my graphics were a good bit better.
Fluoridated zoomers thinking graphics need to be the end-all in a game.

In reference to the clock, that is missing half its numbers, it was an artistic choice. The numbers are missing due to the lights casting a glare on the surface of the clock.

I will say as soon as I heard about receiving a review copy I had reservations about the integrity of this review, but this is surprisingly honest. It's a shame about the game, between the writer and the great OST I want to give it a chance but the actual gameplay aspects suggest otherwise.
Good video and like it a lot. To be a bit fair the creator of this game was one of the writers for Persona 2, so the similarities are very canning here. But you are right the build up isn't there that much for your team members.

I was kinda excited for this game, but I was scared $50 would be too much because it felt like a game I probably wouldn't finish. Thanks, this review helped convince me to at least wait til it's on sale. And maybe by that time they'll fix some of the things you had a problem with.

About the performance issues mentioned arround 4:00:
This is likely due to bad coding, and therefore I doubt this has been fixed since - or will ever be fixed. While two games may look similar the amount of power they drain can be vastly different depending on how well and how close to the system they are running on they are coded.
Examples I have personally experienced:
My old laptop ran WARFRAME - a game that is, to quote ingame chat, "too optimized because you probably can play it on an actual potato" with stable frames even if the screen was busy due to enemy hordes/very particle heavy abilities usage with about 70% of the graphical quality (which still looked amazing with a lot of reflecting surfaces and the like) - all that with a GeForce 750m.
My new laptop runs Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet - a game that looks slightly dated even with the cellshader look that is usually pretty timeless - even without maxing out the settings at
The game's music was not only composed by an old composer from the smt franchise but the whole game was directed by the guy who made Persona 1 and Persona 2 so it's definitely not for recent persona games fans the game. The game looks more like an old Atlus game.
Akiba's Trip (which has "2" in Japan, though both games are set in different universes and the first came out late as a remaster but features optional dub) has even more detail though it was made primarily for that same portable console
This game seems like it’d be worth picking up on a sale.

@@JunKurosu No, Persona 3, 4, and 5 are the ones that have mediocre writing. Persona 1's plot isn't great, but call Persona 2's plot mediocre means that you weren't paying attention or you're lying through your teeth

Playing through this right now and it's okay. I watched most of the anime so I wasn't too confused about the story. Overall, I'm pretty sure I'll give up on the game before I beat it, but for now, I'm good with it.

I’ve just finished the first dungeon and wanted to see others thoughts. I genuinely thought my game/switch was broken when I saw the graphics. I’m still here mainly for: 1- the combat 2- the music and 3- Shogo 😂
I was optimistic for the switch version after the Vita version was supposedly meh at best. Looks like I'll probably just try finishing Tokyo Xandu lol

I honestly really enjoyed it myself but I can see what you mean and why others wouldn’t, the game does have its problems and the graphics aren’t the best but personally I don’t mind bad graphics that much but I do wish the price was a bit lower

And I like them easily more than 5 which is a boring slog , most notably in that within 10 minutes of starting those games I'm able to actually explore the world not spending 2 hours in tutorial sections of "hey you have to be inside by x time and can't go out until this tutorial section is done "

When there is an ability to refill the SP Bar, I don't think it is an issue in combat system. It's a good review I think. I still will get it tomorrow. The only thing, I don't get is the performance. But sadly, this isn't the only case on Switch.
Atelier Lydie and Suelle was also a disappointment in performance. Nights of Azure has a poor Framerate in handheld mode. Also Ys 8 could run way better on Switch.
I got this on ps plus on PS4 ages ago and never touched it so far. The design is very similar to the Persona series
Thank you for an honest review. I was thinking about getting this, but now I'm leaning towards not. The concept seemed interesting, but if it's not handled that well and the characters aren't interesting, then I probably wouldn't like it. Maybe one day, though, if I find it really cheap somewhere.
I think if you could find it cheap it might be worth it. But for full price it’s a hard pass.

I just bought the game for 17_18.00 so, I mean for the price I PAID FOR IT..I say it's okay for the price.. and I pretty much like it.. and yes shogo so far is my favorite.
Currently its on the playstation service. So its Free99, At this price point would it be worth my time?
I came here because it's free on GoG right now. Might try it out for a bit but probably not since I don't have alot of patience for the genre. Mostly got it cause it had the ACTION tag but that seems like it was inaccurate from what I've seen in your review.

Awesome review! Sucks this rerelease sounds like it didnt help the game much. I was excited for it on the Vita and a lot of critics had a lot of complaints, I was hoping this would improve it over all. :(
Doubt anyone is looking at this 2 year old review for a small game, but personally I feel like this review doesn't do justice to the game at all. Performance issues are definitely there but it's a pretty small game anyways, not much to expect there. Plus it's completely fine on PS4 and PC. Comparisons to Persona are obvious because it's made by the same person who wrote the original games. They just split off to pursue their own project. And the story is amazing, I wish these reviewers would actually elaborate more on why they just call it "eh" because I honestly don't understand. Maybe it's because the story revolves around the character's arcs. I don't think some people realize that a legitimate plotline can be centered around the characters' growth. Also nothing about the Muscician route but whatever.
If it helps, it's getting a sequel later this fall and it already looks like it improves on basically all the faults of the first game. I'd suggest keeping an eye on it, they're growing fast.

Just finished the game myself and I agree with most of your points.
However, I do think you were a bit harsh on the writing. While not the best, the game's writing isnt really mediocre. Same with the character designs. They weren't eccentric af but distinct enough to give each character their own uniqueness. Granted, the Switch's graphics may have gotten you there. It annoyed me too
Is it worth 50 bucks? Debatably not unless you're really into this stuff. But this is just a random dude's opinion
So, this game was developed by the one who worked on Persona 1 and Is and EP. Plus the one who worked on digital devil saga. I've seen several reviews and no one complaints about the story (saying that this is the greater point). And compare it to persona is... Weird since it's practically the same devs from the first three games.

Weird thing is, yeah, the game originally came out on PSV, but this was actually completely remade in a whole new engine for the PS4. They definitely could have done better. You're pretty spot on with this review. I didn't mind the characters exactly, but the cast is too bloated to care as much as I should have. And as you already know, yeah, I ran into quite a few issues.
Combat does have 1 huge issue you missed though.
You can just hold A and win every battle. Final boss or enemies 30 levels above you included. It sucks. The battle system is cool, but they throw it in the garbage once you realize that strategy actually just makes it take longer and you get hurt more in the process.
That’s strange. I actually ran into some pretty big difficulty spikes. I got into an encounter with enemies in their 30s when my team was around 18-20 (as were most of the other enemies in the area) and got completely wiped out. I had some issues with the combat, but its difficulty really wasn’t one of them.
@@JRPGCentral Just hold A. Like I said, using strategy actually just makes the game harder lol.I was killing level 50 enemies around level 20 without breaking a sweat. It's a little harder when you're flying solo, but you can still get by just holding A and maybe recovering SP once.
This is totally not true. I've playing it for 4-6 hours so far changing from Hard to Expert and if I didn't play correctly dashing and playing with counters enemies would have killed me much more than they did. I've had my fair share of game overs in that time. Maybe you were playing easy/normal? The combat is pretty well balanced but it is true that regular digihead enemis don't care much to live and you can hold A down when you are a few levels above them (which happens in most RPGs). And so far I'm enjoying the story and the music so idk, maybe this is getting hatred because it is being compared to very different products that have not much to do with it but despite some performance issues the plot/combat design is pretty good imo
Yes, I played on standard difficulty. And yes. It is totally true. For the sake of review I have to play on standard (intended) difficulty. You don't need to be over leveled to do this. You can take out enemies 30 levels above you this way. I beat the entire game this way. You can do this on hard too, but it takes a bit longer for it to be possible.
@@TarksGauntlet i highly doubt in Extreme or Hard you can finish the game like that given that even as you progress lots of enemies take little damage and inflict damage worth half if your life if not more per combo... and also Normal is not the "standard" difficulty. It's a way of saying intermediate if you wish. But it does not mean it is the intended way to play necessarily.

I was really close to considering buying this game since I had spotted some offers on Amazon for it, and I really enjoyed some of the songs in the soundtrack on UA-cam. But I think I'll pass after hearing this honest review, lmao

Thank you for your review. I can't find much about this game review. I'm a fan of Persona series so I'm kind of interested in this game.... but damn.... the graphic look really cheap for ps4... I know that they just remake from psvita version but they could do better.... I like the theme and idea of this game but I guess remake effort is too low... I'll wait for sale.

“Itching for a persona-style jrpg on switch” describes me perfectly, but i already got tokyo mirage sessions #FE and digimon cyber sleuth for that reason, and they’re serving me just fine. Even though i haven’t played this, i would definitely recommend cyber sleuth and even #FE over this.
I mean it’s hard to recommend cyber sleuth to someone who wants a persona clone cause it’s an smt clone with no real persona elements, Tokyo mirage is a persona x fire emblem game so I would highly recommend it to someone who wants a persona game

the graphics on this game is just so poor if you playing it on pc or ps4 that made me think it's just the ps vita port. 2d graphics is cool, music is addictive, combat system is okay (pretty odd to get used to) but again, 3d graphics is oomph !

Just bought this game now im dissapointed
To this day this is my most hated game. I was able to skip pass from the not-persona + not-miku marketing, but this was a mess. Predictable story, overwhelming combat. All wrong.
The only good thing I could find here is the music and the fact that Deco27 composed a song for it. I remember seeing it at a 70% discount price and still thought ‘god bless the dummy that will pay for this like I did’.
I heard the 2nd game is much better have you tried that one?
I didn’t know what this game is about until I watch the review. Nope, not my style of gaming.
