  • The original Caligula Effect released on the Vita in 2017 and was overshadowed by Persona 5’s release just a month prior. The release was also plagued with performance issues thanks to its ambitious combat design that blended the strategy of tactical RPGs with the snappy gameplay of traditional turn based JRPGs. With The Caligula Effect: Overdose, FuRyu is delivering what I’d like to call the definitive edition of the game, with a brand new UI, faster, more streamlined gameplay, and tons of additional stories and scenarios. But is the trip to Mobius worth taking again? Find out in our Hours Later review!

    Thanks to you I bought the game. I'm now 7 hours in and I don't regret my purchase. While the game has flaws (which lets be real what jrpg doesn't? That's why it's a niche market) I love it for all its perfections and imperfections. Here's hoping the company at least learns from their mistakes and builds something better with their new found knowledge!

      So heres my problem with the original. Let me know if these have been resolved.
      #1) enemies all look the same and music plays the same.
      #2) the story is way too short and feel less involved than most jrpg main protagonists. Alot of telling not enough showing.
      #3) post game feels like a chore to do. Making friends to all the pol and finding personal quests for them only to unlock certain codes.
      #4) lack of customization

      @@kevinvu5432 while the product I ended up playing was indeed a fun play, I do agree. I think it mostly falls to dated development ideas. (I. E. Dungeons, lack of music what's there is good but gets under your skin when you're in a dungeon for 2hrs, missed opportunity with the friendship system- really throws me off when the quests repeat and they have the same voice lines/Quest lines.) now what's there is definetely great for the price, I doubt I'd buy it if it were a dollar more now knowing what I do.

    Wow, that's a very good and informative review. I like the format. No unnecessary commentary or jokes. Even though you have played 33 hours of it, the review is easy to understand for anyone who hasn't played the game. You also didn't dig too deep into the story / character relationships / character names, etc., just a simple top level overview of things with a focus on game mechanics, which is good. Also a nice voice and speaking pace. I hope you don't mind if I subscribe :)

    I like this review a lot. I saw most reviewers saying it doesn't look great visually on the Switch and that the combat is a bit bizzare etc but I don't see it. Every game has its flaws, of course but still. Graphics don't really bother me, the only time it does is if I can't read text or something due to a blurry image or faint colours. That's about it. I like the style and honest I like the choice to embellish the combat. The 500 NPCs seems a bit excessive but I don't totally hate the idea. It does make it clear as well that this is a dungeon crawler so people complaining about the stream of gameplay in twisting dungeons doesn't real mean much to me. Got this for my Switch today and I do not regret it. I feel like I can play this in my down time but I also wouldn't mind playing it on the bus on my way home from work either. Seems weird people compare it to Persona as well. I know the creator comes from the Persona games but that doesn't mean that EVERYTHING is going to be like what we expect from Persona because they're different games. No-one wants a game they create to be a clone of a more successful game they've already done because then you look like a one trick pony.

    • @BacklogBattle
      @BacklogBattle  5 років тому +2

      Thank you for your comment! To be honest, it took me a bit to realize that I was playing a dungeon crawler myself. It was only after several hours that I realized that it's exactly that! I think, for the most part, if people come into this game knowing that it's a dungeon crawler that the expectations should be aligned to something like that and not Persona. I think the mere mention of the writer being involved in the early Persona games was a detriment to this game, given that it gave some players this expectation that the game plays just like that series. I agree with you that cloning games just to recycle success isn't good for the long term, and I'm happy that they went back and revisited this game for more powerful platforms. And honestly, the look and feel of the game grew on me! Who cares if the variance in enemies is just based on the weapons they use? The strategy and the combo system is addicting! I think most of my first three hours was spent trying to defeat every single opponent in the first dungeon, only to realize that they respawn infinitely! Thanks again! 😀

      @@BacklogBattle No problem, thanks for the review and for responding! I totally agree, just the marketing of saying "from the creators of..." in any context kinda sets the game up on a pedestal, which I can understand as it does attract those fans, it does have an opposite effect since it makes people think it's going to play exactly the same.

    One thing I wished some reviewers would do would be to mention that the game is written by the father of the Persona series, Tadashi Satomi.
    Also, I often feel like people are way to harsh on this game simply due to them being spoiled by P5's flash over substance.

    • @BacklogBattle
      @BacklogBattle  5 років тому +13

      I was actually replying to the comments about the Persona writer being involved in this game and how the mere mention of his name unfortunately set some unreasonable expectations for it. Specifically, Caligula Effect Overdose is a dungeon crawler RPG, which doesn’t play anything close like the Persona games. That said, I think the game does have a lot of redeeming qualities - it’s just coming out at a very busy time.

    I think one thing that should probably get mentioned is that yes, music is a HUGE theme of it, and the enemies being Musicians is a deliberate choice, as they're supposed to parallel vocaloid producers in the real world. Each of the Musician dungeon themes are all composed by a vocaloid producer associated with that character (for example, Stork's producer is Deco*27, and his song is composed by him).
    In general, Caligula is a series that I think won't be very impactful or interesting to you unless you end up liking the characters, bc their issues and how it relates to the theme of escapism vs growth is the major draw of it, and one that i think they really succeeded in.

    This is the 2nd review I’ve seen of this game and the first positive one, I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy it but I think this game would benefit from having a demo, far as I can tell it doesn’t (least not on the switch which would be the system I’d probably use) kinda makes the $50 price tag hard to swallow. The music used in the review is catchy and it sounds like its music heavy. Just wish it had a demo.

      I mentioned in the review that the game definitely has a musical theme to it and the songs, as you identified, are part of it. I forgot to mention that every time you get into battle that the game seamlessly adds in vocals and more instruments as well! I’d agree that a demo would’ve benefited this game.

Do you do spoiler or story-analysis videos often?

    • @BacklogBattle
      @BacklogBattle  5 років тому +1

      Glad to hear that you loved the video! Unfortunately, I don’t do a lot of analysis videos as I tend to have just enough time to review new games, make guides, or report on upcoming games. I’ll also openly admit that while I do often ruminate on said stories in private or casually via our podcast, I don’t feel that the type of attention to detail that analysis videos demand are in my wheelhouse as of yet. Perhaps, in the future, I’ll have the courage to dive deeper into said subject matter!
      That said, the interconnection between music and the story is very fascinating to me and actually adds an important subtext for players who decide to dig deeper than what’s presented. I’m currently watching through the anime to see how that medium tells the story, as I’ve been told that it’s actually well done!

      Backlog Battle The anime adaptation is very interesting, especially juxtaposed to Persona 5’s adaptation; Caligula gave the silent protagonist a personality, history, and unique relevance to the plot, this everything plays out quite differently. The direction is on-top, but sadly budget constraints and the fact that it came out during a season with a TON of other productions with talent spread thin do hit it in some spots.

  • @Nonn0n

    I’m glad how you put the game. Ultimately, overdose has a rich sub plot that makes the game worth playing. I think that the relationships with the go home club and musicians could have been polished more if they sacrificed the 500 ncp thing. The wire mechanism could have also been done better. I feel like too much focused on you being able to explore and find new traits rather than the characters.
    But the game is still unique and sparks inspiration for new games.

      The gameplay loop is very different. It’s closer to Etrian Odyssey (which is a dungeon RPG) than both of the RPGs you mentioned where there’s separate town and dungeon sections. The whole game is practically comprised of multiple dungeons, who just happen to have NPCs walking around. I started the game on Hard, figuring I could try to sus things out.
    What infuriates me some is the accuracy issues and how it doesn't reflect in a real time battle system. It really feels off that a Vintage Strike has the MC run up and *clearly* kick, but seeing the words *MISS* pop up got a groan out of me.
    There's also the fact that, despite doing everything I could, there was two moments in the first dungeon where I got stunlocked, and couldn't select an action, helpless to watch as my MC gets annihilated. The first one hurt quite a bit due to my progress in the dungeon past the save point, and my second death happened almost *five minutes after restarting and getting stunlocked again by two students I didn't have an issue with my first time around.* Its one thing in EO3 to watch as a Lynx tears through your party members on the first floor. At least you can try to mitigate the damage some with skills or planning. Its another thing to get annihilated into a stunlock despite selecting what should be the correct options for the situation. Certainly doesn't help that for the first few moments you're all alone.

    I'm about 5 hours in, as much as I enjoy it, there's just one thing that kills it for me: the godawful hitting percentage. I swear my characters can't hit for shit and I'm on normal. I mean the first boss took me a bit because my goddamn characters kept on missing and I was overlevelled, and so many fights take longer because my character kept missing! Like, during one fight with an enemy they would cast their guard, so I use the shield breaker - MISS - which follows with all of my characters having their attacks nullified and forcing me to wait for the next attempt. I wish the imaginary chain would consider the percentage too because it does tell you "yes this would work" but it never freaking considers the possibility to miss your target. I practically use accuracy stuff because of the piss poor hitting percentage - especially Kotaro, he's useless because he can't hit for shit.
    I HOPE it gets better because I want to enjoy this game, but this accuracy trouble just nags me the wrong way: accuracy is just an artificial difficulty in my opinion and when a jrpg forces you to have accuracy just to avoid missing too often, i get turned off real quick.

    • @BacklogBattle

      It's very much in the vein of XCOM when it comes to accuracy and I can certainly tell you that it's a very important stat for me during my playthrough. @@BacklogBattle RNG and I don't go along so I avoid any game that highly rewards RNG in any case...and yeah considering that this game is all about % I'm not surprised if it's like xcom, a game that I know is a bitch when it comes to hit rating (A friend of mine played and told me how broken the aim system is). I just hope the rng gets better: for now I boost my stats with accuracy and hope I miss less.

    Playing on hard, getting bullied by 4 enemies at once but somehow pulled it off, beating a level 18 boss with my level 9 squad for 20 mins.
    Have to say, the game does question why you want to go back to the real world while making you realize why we shouldn't run from reality. It actually makes me think about what I should do in my life.

      It’s very thought provoking, from a base level. Especially when it asks what your values are and whether or not they’re really the right things to think about. The new scenario really blows those ideas wide open and really provides an interesting perspective as well

    This game has great concepts but it did the absolute bare minimum in many aspects. The npc social links are superficial and lack any depth, there's no facial animation, no English dub, only in game cutscenes with mediocre quality anime cutscenes, etc. There's so much more that could've been done

      I was coming from the perspective of playing the original Vita game, which was far worse than what this one was. That said, relative to other games in the genre on the same platform, you are right that it certainly doesn't hold up to those standards.

      You could have turned the music off and play your own via phone, Spotify, pc. I only say that cause I understand how you feel lol

    I got this free on ps plus on ps4 and this feels so dated. The battle actions are really awkward and the mouths don’t move when talking despite this being a thing since PS2. I can see they cut costs a lot when making this game

    I always have to chuckle at eastern ideas in video games when it comes to a small sized female being the guide to a party. The symbolism is obvious. Feminism or femininity represents chaos. While masculinity represents order. The sheer irony of a party being led by chaos to supposedly fight for good is a laugher. I love RPG's and JRPG's myself. That being said, I find the symbolism and story beats to be laughably nonsensical or self defeating. I guess that's why I like them because most people don't realize what the story is actually saying, despite intent, is that humanity is actually chaotic and not to be trusted. Lol.

      It's funny to me that almost every story east or west pits humanity against a higher power that attempts to assert rule or law. In these stories the arguments for humanity, that it is unique because of it's short life, is actually undercut by the symbolism. The symbolism in all these stories says that the villains are actually correct and humanity cannot properly rule themselves. Not a shock this is theism vs atheism or humanism playing out. The defenses for humanism are so comically shallow that you always get the same tired, Obviously flawed response. Which basically amounts to: Because feelings. Lol. It's so bad. One might think there has to be a better response than that. Then you look at humanity and you go; oh yeah.... Nope lol.

      Basically the argument for humanity boils down to unstable emotion. That occasionally it produces something beautiful. Nevermind all of the horrors. With all the thought put into them what you come out with is reasoning my 4 year old would make. It's absurdly unrealistic. It's like humanities flaws are terrible but the solution is to pretend that it is solved by ignoring them and saying stupid things with conviction. Utter nonsense.
