Smile Dog was the first creepypasta that actually scared me. It was different than the other wild stories and images in that it wasn't just horrifying - it's kinda funny actually - but it's a level of uncanny valley that makes it scary. It's a picture that stuck in my head, coming back to mind as I was falling asleep. I'd call it a slowburn scare; not scary at first glance, but as you think about it, it gets worse. Now Smile Dog is my favourite, and almost certainly started my love of photomanipulation horror

I remember being 8 and i was new to the internet and i was watching some of those weird spanish minecraft videos then this dude showed a pic of smile dog and went like "If you dont like the video right now this dog will be looking at you through the window tonight!" Smile dog is probably the first image I've ever seen that genuinely terrified me and stuck with me. I was like 12 and I had never seen any scary movies or played any horror games. It scared me for years and sparked my fear of the uncanny valley that's still present to this day.

When I was 14-15, I read a lot of Creepypastas. Slender, sleep experiment, that wierd imaginary cartoon cat friend (Not the trevor henderson one), etc. Not a single one scared me, they were just fascinating or even funny sometimes...with the exception of Smile Dog... Holy shit, that image fucking terrified me to no end. I think it was three or four months after turning 16 that i stopped becoming afraid it.

This is like a modern Lovecraftian horror story. The initial mystery, and an investigation that circles back around to the beginning. Solid concept, great execution.
One of my all-time favourite creepypastas because of its realism. Spreading of malicious emails is a real thing. Being utterly haunted by an image is a real thing, and insomnia and anxiety are real things. Really convincing and grounded in relatable territory.

When I was younger. I used to read or watch things I hated, to pretend that I was different, that I was cool. And smile dog was one. It caused me to have horrifying nightmares for months. And now. My worst fear is the uncanny valley. So it all came full circle.

@@BBaaaaa I have been medically tested haha. My REM sleep is a bit wonky so I end up not dreaming most of the time. Usally people do have a small chance of not being able to dream during REM but for me it's swapped around. I pretty much just go to sleep and it's black for a few seconds before I wake up again

I just can’t stop watching these videos. they are incredibly entertaining to watch, and Shane and Ryan are a great comedy dou, it really helps lighten the mood to something scary.

I have to applaud this entire series for not only being well written, with hilarious commentary and suitably haunting artist renditions, but there are no jump-scares. It's all about the story, and how well Shane allows Ryan to read it.
right? this could be a fucking annoying series if they both didn't know how to tell/listen to a story. but they do -- or at least it's edited to make it seem like they do lol -- so the breaks for commentary never feel disruptive. on the contrary, the breaks are breaths of fresh air and necessary if you are easily scared like me lol
@Squalid It made more sense in my head at the time, but Shane is fairly quick to interrupt Ryan when the supernatural is involved. Ryan definitely has a script in this series, and Shane is still happy to unnerve him.
What ever Shane showed Ryan is the anti-smiledog. Meaning, it just makes people laugh when they see it in their head.

I relate to Shane way more than I thought I would. He seems like an extrovert but by his account he’s only like that with people he likes. He says he likes people who don’t like other people, and I completely get that. He’s the perfect example of an extroverted introvert who can be so fun but people drain him.
I believe that the day Ryan tells the story of a person who got addicted to heroine because they were pricked by some random person on the street is the day Shane will feel genuine fright.

@@black4ever018 oh girl I'm a RECOVERING heroin addict, I've been off it for almost 6 years and my fear is that some asshole from my past is going to stick me to try to get me addicted again. And if it's really good stuff you don't always have to hit a vein, it will absorb in your muscle, you just won't get as high. That's why when I first heard that I was like "there's no way an addict would waste their stash on a stranger" and I still think it won't happen, but I've had nightmares about it. Especially about people who I thought were my friends but when I got clean they got mad and almost jealous because they couldn't get off it. Now I have nightmares those people are trying to pull me back in to that world by sticking me with a needle. Which again, will never happen. THANKS FOR THAT IRRATIONAL FEAR SHANE.

I like how they're not even trying to pick believable ones anymore
they mentioned (I think in Watcher Weekly+) that they decided to remove the guessing aspect entirely. I think Ryan said it was because it was too distracting or something; it did used to throw the pacing off for me, and I like them better without it!
I’m pretty sad about it. I saw it coming because they had picked mostly fake ones in the past but I still liked that aspect!
Honestly most of these stories aren't really scary, when you know it's fake. A real story once in a while would be good, I think.

I’m actually genuinely afraid of smile dog because it’s just real enough to look like a dog, but it also looks so irregular that it trips a sort of primal fear that I don’t really have with anything else.

In HS, during the school plays, I would airdrop funny cursed images to my peers/classmates in the audience when waiting for the show to start. Hundreds of people on their phones. What better opportunity is there? I was working as a spotter (someone who operates the spotlight.) I was directly above the entire audience, and no one could see me. There were around 50 people with their airdrop on, and I changed my iPhone's name to "iPhone". Then I kind-off literally dropped the images to these 50 something people. Most denied the pictures. But the 20 something that accepted them were all groaning and laughing and wondering who tf had sent the image. Watching the audience look everywhere but up was the funniest part!
Once on an airplane, someone had accidentally connected their airpods to my phone without realizing. So, I proceeded to play the monster's inc earrape. I could see the guy across the isle and two rows up quickly rip his airpods out of his ears. It was so hard not to laugh! I turned off my Bluetooth until I saw him properly connect his airpods, so he wouldn't connect to my phone again.

I want a story like the professor puppet started moving on its own when being left alone like annabelle. When Shane wears the puppet, it binds to his hand and couldn't take it off. The puppet slowly taking control of Shane and Shane became its puppet
Someone needs to write and submit that for an episode. Just seeing the realisation dawn on Ryan and Shane's faces would be priceless. The sheer joy and horror would be amazing. Season finale content right there

That's literally what I do at basketball games, if I get too overwhelmed by either the noise or the number of people there I'll go hide in the locker room for a bit (assuming I'm not supposed to be on court at the time)

I havent seen smile dog since I was a kid. But reencountering it now. I can still remember its face, how realistic it was. I know its fake but if creepy pasta was your thing way back when, and you came across it. That image is somehow still fresh.

I've seen that picture. And I wish I can permanently delete it from my memory.
Smile Dog was always one of my favorites of the classic really popular creepypastas. One of the only ones that I'd consider as actually scary, really. The writing and the delivery are well executed and it seems like something that could actually be real.
Also props to the artist for this video. The original photo for the story was never too freaky to me, but that rendition was just so much more unsettling for some reason.
This is what I love about this series is how just when most of us are unsettled and or scared Shane and Ryan will unintentionally comfort us by saying some dumb or stupid shit that’s really funny and then we get a nice calming break :)
