My best friend has a mannequin. Her name is Clarice. She's usually dressed up like a witch. In college she stood by the door of his apartment. Scared the shit out of me plenty of times, but she guarded the door well.
I think I always kind of assumed Ryan and Shane’s friendship was pretty put on in the early Unsolved days to make it more watchable like a lot of acting and media duos do. But its always kind of endearing when there are moments like Ryan trying to give Shane ASMR 100% seriously which reminds me how close they are
why did u think that 😭 i have never gotten that impression. more the impression that they were assigned to this show and became closer than work buddies lol. I didn't think their relationship was fake tho lol
Ryan mentioning how he 1) went to Disneyland with Shane 2) bought two corn dogs for the two of them 3) looked down and went "sweet, two corn dogs!" and, high out of his mind, ate them both - *confirmed* that their friendship is nothing if not 100% real lmao
shane was with ryan for his bachelor party/trip! for sure the best of buds, I think they definitely started out as work friends but grew close pretty naturally
This reminded me of the time when 17 year old me and my friend were in an empty street dead in the night waiting for her dad to pick us up, we were standing next to some clothing store with a lot of mannequins staring at us, we were a lil scared and nervous as it was so late, through the glass I saw a mannequin moving and I screamed, so she screamed then we realised some guy in the store was moving it away to close, we noticed when he started laughing.
Ryan: “How do you lie?” Shane: “Quite comfortably, in a hammock.” This repartee is a cultural reset. It’s a cultural reset. (Edit: Thank you for the likes)
You're not alone @Kris T! When I saw that this episode had maniquins I immediately thought of the first episode with the 9th Docter and Rose. It's been a while since I watched them but, it sticks with you.
SAME! When Shane was asking how could it attack you all I could think of was the Autons, who we literally see murder a guy, in the 9th Doctor's first episode. Did forget what they were called, though. All I remembered was that they were living plastic.
S1E1 of the reboot, Rose, did an amazing job with the Autons. It does a great job building tension and it really did feel like an actual, admittedly low budget, horror movie, at least in the beginning.
I was starting to lose faith this in season of the series after the last few stories haven't been the best, but imo this is at least in the top 3 episodes of the show. Massive props to the author, I was legitimately unnerved and invested in this story.

I actually had a mannequin head as a tween, bc I wanted to try out wig styling (lol that went well) and an internet tutorial told me to just go to like, Party City or something and ask for one (which they actually did give to me, for free). I didn't have that thing yr supposed to stick up its neckhole to keep it from moving around though, and eventually my dad got tired of watching me and superglued it to the underside of an old baking sheet. I never tried wig styling again but it felt weird to throw it out, so I just kept her on top of a cabinet in my basement for years. Tho, since we used the basement to hang out a lot, my sibling and I saw her pretty often, along with anyone we brought over. Her name was Mauve.
@@3bugsinatrenchcoat at a later point my sibling actually had one too for awhile for some reason (might've been on loan from someone bc I don't remember her sticking around as long?) that they named Rycharde (or Rhyshard? We had one that we would prank my friend with, leaving it in different places in the house. She took it from us after we put it in the mail box to prank the mail carrier.
Man the protagonist must've been a theater kid with that kind of theatrical recounting of events That aside, this was a very good story. I didn't get super spooked surprisingly but that's cause Ryan and Shane always come it at the best times to assuage the fears. Ryan's "would I fight my wife?" paired with Shane's reaction really got me
when i was a kid my sister told me that the mannequins were her friends (or just anyone) that were caught shoplifting so they had to wear the clothes they tried to steal (and if they were missing a head or their hands.... well that was part of the punishment)

People laugh at me when i say this & have the audacity to say shit like "paranormal stuff aint real" im also a believer, having had my own experiences but i dont see demons as paranormal. They plant themselves in the deepest, darkest parts of our minds where they feed off our pain & vulnerability, slowly destroying our will. That is a demon, they may not be real in the way we've seen on movies & such but they're definitely real. I think this story is actually the best one yet. The imagery was amazing and the frame narrative made it intriguing because we don’t even now if the narrator (the cop giving the interrogation) was telling the truth or not. The story was really captivating and I loved it. I actually did get pretty scared during this one so it was very enjoyable
As someone who is deeply afraid of mannequins, i can’t even walk in a store anymore because I’m too scared of the mannequins. I purposely avoid the mannequins by going to a different section or just looking down while I pass them. I have no clue what sparked this fear but it is truly horrible.
I work with mannequins and I must tell you they are not scary. I call them miss. Manny quinns and they kind of grow on you. Maybe you need to work with mannequins
definitely the best story of the season so far. the way it was told through a third party was pretty effective, almost as if it were a campfire story, and the way it was written with very strong visuals in mind definitely helped make it very impressionable.
The introduction reminds me of The Stranger, I've been waiting for an episode about Mannequins (Now to wait for a "Are You Scared of Being Watched?") The fact that the starting line is asking what the most terrifying thing that you've ever seen reminds me of how James Wright hired Elias lol and how this whole thing is like a Section 31 interview. Holy crap I didn't expect the wife wearing the mannequin like a skin-suit! I expected the opposite. This just gives me the magnus archives vibes, I love the writing too and the fact that it's written by the same dude who wrote the ocean bleeding!
SUCH a step up from the last story. It went from "uh... i guess i'll put something scary here idk" to downright terrifying. Bikram if you're reading this i gotta give praises to you since most horror stories nowadays for me are just background noise, but this one had me captivated. good on ya dude
There was a kids show in the 80’s (I’m not sure if it was only in Canada) called “Today’s Special” that was about a store mannequin coming to life. Nightmare fuel.
There's a music video by Girl's Generation for the song, Gee, that this comment reminds me of. The group members are mannequins that come to life, but it's not a spooky video or anything like that.
I actually have a creepy story involving a mannequin: So one summer when I was home from uni I was out for a walk. There were a lot of um, ladies of the night, going missing in the nearest city and people thought it might be a serial killer. But anyways I decided to go for a walk by myself because, idk, I am am the type of person who's in the cold opening of a horror movie - like yah there may be a serial killer but it'll probably be fine, right? And then I find this plastic bag with a heel and part of a foot sticking out of it, black hair coming out the top, that smells of rotting meat (and by that point I'd smelled large animals rotting before so I knew that smell). And so I'm like, wondering if I just found a body and if I should call the cops (only this is like the 90s so I'd have to walk back home to do that). But then I was like, well, I don't want to bother the cops if it's not a dead person, so me, in my utter brilliance, decides the best plan of action is to poke the heel with a stick and open the bag. And it was a mannequin and chunks of pig. I don't know if someone saw the missing posters from the city and was trying to play a prank, or if someone just needed to get rid of a mannequin and some spoiled pig chunks at the same time, but that's what I found. Which is lucky, because a) I don't really want to find a body 2) I can't imagine Shane and Ryan covering the true crime that is like "and then this 18-year-old asshole decided to poke the body with a stick"
I seriously thought it was going to end like: "yes your wife was banging on the door...as a plea for help because she got herself stuck in the mannequin...she's dead we found her in the woods still inside of it. Gotta admit the actual ending was way better than what was going on in my brain 😄
@@1musketeer311 Suuuper late, but one of the mannequins followed the man to the police station and was standing behind the detective all throughout the story, which is why the husband was described as 'never breaking his stare'. The mannequins possibly only move when they're not being looked at, which explains why the husband never looks away from it
Potential Theory: what if the protagonist is actually a serial killer? The existing mannequins are his previous victims, left in the secluded woods. The protagonist describing dragging his wife back to the cabin is not actually to drag her from a seemingly possessed-like trance away from her new fascination, but the result of knocking her out in a tussle after he led her to the spot of his previous victims and them having a physical altercation where she tried to escape him and, sadly, failed. Maybe the mannequins being back in the cabin (via the wife dragging the mannequins back to the cabin) represents that she has joined them in being dead (as her husband killed her). The wife wearing the mannequin as a skin suit might represent that she is firmly in the realm of the dead with the passing of time overnight, where her body has become rigid (like a mannequin) with rigor mortis. The protagonist claiming his wife was fascinated with the mannequins (we can, at the very least, *consider* him as an unreliable narrator) may not be a true reflection of that moment - perhaps *he* is fascinated with his previous kills. Maybe the protagonist had spent time camping in the woods and had killed random hikers in increasingly violent ways (as many serial killers increase their level of violence with each kill). In the bathroom, rather than fear, he feels guilt when his wife bangs on the door to enter the room; each slam of the door is his own heart actually pounding as he half realises the gravity of what he has done, breaking a whole new barrier in having killed his own wife. This might explain the appearance of the mannequin at the end of the story too - the return (and perhaps ever-presence) of his own guilt for his actions, which he nonetheless can’t, or won’t, stop. Or, perhaps, the fact that the figure behind the cop is wearing a suit reveals the protagonist’s truly homicidal thoughts - he is envisaging his next victim - the police officer. At the beginning of the story, the tires being slashed may have been done by the protagonist to stop his wife escaping and/or to make his own story seem plausible - that he was a trapped victim. The opening also mentions he’d been working from home - maybe he was cooped up too long and suffered a break from reality of some sort. The protagonist also claims the couple went to sleep that fateful day without saying a word to each other after arguing - this is an awfully convenient way of ensuring he won’t have to explain any supposed final conversation with his wife to the police - especially if she was already dead (killed in the woods). (Though, he does later recall another fight after his wife allegedly brought the mannequins back to the cabin - so that’s not necessarily a solid interpretation of that part of the story.) Making a point of emphasising that his wife supposedly said she wanted to *be* with the mannequins (not play with them) may also be an attempt at easing his own guilt - imagining that somehow being one of his victims is what his wife wanted on some level, thereby also absolving him on some level. I LOVED this story and this episode so much! I actually watched it twice to see if my theory holds up and I honestly think it does, but would love to hear others’ interpretations too! Masterful writing from Bikram Mann. Thank you so much, Shane and Ryan, for sharing this wonderful writer’s work with us!

Tires already slashed? I guess I'm running the whole way. Honestly, I feel like that's a fair deal in a relationship.
One of my favorite stories so far. Fucking amazing. That ending caused chills to cover my whole body. The ending was perfect. Why would anyone want to know what happened next? When Shane made a kissing gesture when pretending to talk to a mannequin was hilarious... I laughed out loud many times during this video. The story is truly frightening as well. An excellent Are You Scared episode! Kudos to Watcher and the writer of the story.
This is the first time I've been scared by an AYS in a while. Of course I always enjoy the stories and the commentary, but I don't think one of them has actually scared me since Kisaragi Station.
Personally, I thought the husband was lying, it sounds very much like he wrote it out or remember his story to the cops so he sounds believable. I love the twist at the end, I like to think Maya was just trying to ask him to help her out of the mannequin because she struck.
For a very very long time I was TERRIFIED of wax figures in museums etc. As in crying and cowering away from them. I get such uncanny valley even now if I am in a room by myself with one.

It's so weird 😁😁
Well it did make me anxious, so... mission accomplished?
Kind of creepy.
The scariest part of the story was her peeking around a tree. Someone or something peeking around a tree or corner is very creep haha

That was very creepy but what especially got to me was the image of her eye peeking through the mannequin she was wearing like NOPE

Shoutout to Bikram Mann for writing a brilliant story that’s going to haunt me. Congratulations on your new book!
The fact no one mentioned the Autons from Doctor Who makes me feel like such a nerd. They're like faceless mannequins with guns hidden in their hands.
You're not alone @Kris T! When I saw that this episode had maniquins I immediately thought of the first episode with the 9th Docter and Rose. It's been a while since I watched them but, it sticks with you.
Thank you someone said it!!
Found this comment checking if anyone else immediately thought of the Autons haha
When they said the husband and wife both be going crazy I immediately though “folie a deux” and was so happy to hear them boys repeat it back to me
I was starting to lose faith this in season of the series after the last few stories haven't been the best, but imo this is at least in the top 3 episodes of the show. Massive props to the author, I was legitimately unnerved and invested in this story.
Same to be honest, the reveal of the wife wearing the Mannequin was pretty unnerving
Same the cat story, movie theatre, and hat man were pretty bad. Nothing to do with the watcher crew! the stories were not interesting and just bad, especially hat man. I felt I wasted my time watching the hat man episode!

It's scary because when stuff like this happens, we feel ourselves losing control & that's just what our demons want. But we can control them, we can bring ourselves out of the darkness, only we can do this. I hope everyone out there who is battling with their demons, will come through it like a champ, keep pushing through & keep your head up. It's scary but always remember who is in control. You.

As a kid I used to imagine the mannequins in the mall coming to life at night... I wasn’t scared of them but this thought would spook me sometimes
A la Doctor Who would be terrifying

I actually have a creepy story involving a mannequin:
So one summer when I was home from uni I was out for a walk.
Man, I'd have done the same thing. I mean, somebody has to be the first victim in the horror movie right?
@@GippyHappy lort
I seriously thought it was going to end like: "yes your wife was banging on the door...as a plea for help because she got herself stuck in the mannequin...she's dead we found her in the woods still inside of it.

@@1musketeer311 Suuuper late, but one of the mannequins followed the man to the police station and was standing behind the detective all throughout the story, which is why the husband was described as 'never breaking his stare'. @@oxo1thank you!
But i still dont get what happened with the wife…or why she was inside of the thing but eh
Ryan being surprised at how good he is at making plans to trap people feels like a Ricky Goldsworth bleedthrough
Ok, I must say that the protagonist in handcuffs is actually quite a savage and I’m here for it.
(Though, he does later recall another fight after his wife allegedly brought the mannequins back to the cabin - so that’s not necessarily a solid interpretation of that part of the story.)
Making a point of emphasising that his wife supposedly said she wanted to *be* with the mannequins (not play with them) may also be an attempt at easing his own guilt - imagining that somehow being one of his victims is what his wife wanted on some level, thereby also absolving him on some level.
I LOVED this story and this episode so much! I actually watched it twice to see if my theory holds up and I honestly think it does, but would love to hear others’ interpretations too! Masterful writing from Bikram Mann.

You are 100% not the only one. I, too, am severely spooked by mannequins, dolls, marionettes/puppets/mascot costumes, overly human-looking androids and animatronics, and wax figures. Mostly it's fine and not true phobia level - I can walk through a mall or a toy store without screaming - but I can't go inside a Madame Tussaud's or other such places. The uncanny valley, thanks, I hate it.
