Yes! and more specifically, he's scared of somebody injecting him on purpose, so be sure to include that. I think it could be cool if it was set in a psychiatric hospital or a similar institution where you'd have no control over what you're being injected with. Just a thought, but it would be interesting to see Shane slowly realizing the story is about his biggest fear.
This isn't a "story". It's been done to quite a lot of people and we don't think it's scary. It's just sad that people we trusted would do that to us.

Ryan: “Do you know what a Derrick is?”
Shane: “It’s a guy.”

My dad was a saturation diver for 12-13 years. He did deep dives and welded pipes down for oil rigs under the water. He's had decompression sickness, been stung by a lion fish, and has been in some sketchy places in different countries while working overseas. I used to be terrified as a kid thinking about the possible and very real dangers of his job- especially when he went down in decompression tanks hundreds of feet underwater. Over the years I've realized how corporations take advantage of these divers, whom are often lost souls running from something- letting them get hurt or sometimes even die.. just to replace them with some new, young, naive sat diver. All in the pursuit of the same exact thing- oil. At the end of it all, it all came down to the oil. He still works within the saturation diving industry- actually he's made a nice reputation for himself and racked up probably the world' most interesting resume. Only now he's a diving instructor for Seattle's diving institution. His spine is absolutely wrecked from the hard labor of working on rigs and carrying heavy equipment needed to dive.
Oil, oil and oil, is that a blessing or a curse? If we had less of it, we would have certainly not went down the road where almost everything becomes dictated by it.
Also im sorry to hear what your dad had to go through, i hope he is better now
@@lakshyapatel3842 my dad is in a lot better position now! His back is still in shambles and he will have to eventually get surgery to (I think) replace a disk or add some kind of plate to help him. But his doctors have encouraged him to put off that traumatic kind of surgery (I guess because it’s super hard to heal from and it’s high risk because he only has one kidney)- and work out to lose any excess weight, and also build muscle to support his back better. So sorry if this doesn’t make sense. I’m drunk and stoned as fuck as I’m writing this.
@@1nsomn14c_ oh ok makes a lot of sense, all the best to your father and i hope he has a great recovery!
@@1nsomn14c_ nah it made perfect sense dude, wishing the best for you and your dad. I've hear that, besides just the weight of the equipment, the micro-bubbles from gasses coming out of solution in the body fluids during decompression can actually affect joints and the spine, somehow breaking down the cushioning between the disks. Idk for sure though, but it might be a long term hazard of the job even without an actual case of the bends, just happening slowly over time.
As much as I *despise* fossil fuel companies, and know that that's mostly who hires that kind of diver, I don't harbor any ill will towards the divers themselves. In fact, I highly respect them since I know I could never do it, and we owe them so much since other important infrastructure is down there too, like internet cables and such. Tell your dad that random internet commenters say thank you, even if he never personally worked on an undersea cable!
Damn what a beast your pops is.

Theory: they drilled into some metal ore (potentially iron), the rubbing of the drill in one direction caused magnetism between the ore and the drill causing an attraction leading to the drill and rig being pulled apart, making the noises etc. This would also cause the water to turn 'blood red' and the taste of blood when it splashed his face (haem groups in blood are iron, tastes metalically). The noises could've occured due to stressed metal being pulled towards the magnetised ore. As for the injuries, could've been flying debris.

Right, it's sort of a self preservation drive built into our subconscious from my understanding. Accidents and disasters and true crime as fascinating (at least partially) because our brain "wants" us to get as much information as possible about some fatal scenario, hoping that we can avoid or prevent it happening to us somehow.
It is almost terrifying how similar this sounds to the accounts from survivors from the Alexander Kielland oil platform accident that happened in 1980.
That is probably the source.

I think one of the best things about this story is the uncertainty. Did that really happen? Or was that just how this man's brain dealt with the horror of being on an oil rig during an accident? Yes! Was caught in a riptide recently and ended up two miles out and nearly died. In case this happens to anyone else, swim to the parallel to the shore. Stay safe everyone!
Don't you mean parallel to the shore? Since the riptide is pulling you out away from the shore, parallel to the riptide would just be swimming along with or against the riptide. With it and you get swept out, against and you become exhausted and drown. You want to swim parallel to shore, which ends up being diagonal to shore since you're letting the current carry you until you're out of it and can swim back in to shore. (Does that make sense?)

The author of this story was so good at descriptive writing
Ryan’s voice shouldn’t be this calming while talking about scary shit yet here we are
i watch this series off and on because , , , it spooks me,, and i just now noticed that the description includes trigger warnings. That's such a thoughtful thing to include, I wish more content creators followed in their suit.

me: oh he’s gonna shut down the platform and call a helicopter or something!
narrator: then i stabbed myself in the ears
the watcher: uploads
me: stops what i’m doing and gets comfy
love how agressive the "MY friend Shane Madej" was
Favorite bits : Shane's hair, Shane's demon voice, Ryan taking a shot at Shane while Shane is complimenting him and then Ryan going "la la la, nope, didn't say anything", and the both of them knowing each other so well they predict what they would each say and do in that situation down to the T.
Very fun episode ! I mean, uuuh, very creepy ? Not at all karmic ? Anyway don't mess with the ocean, we know the Moon and Mars better than we know our own oceans.
Lets go!! the ocean is horrifying
i appreciate how this writer really said "digging for oil is EVIL and i WILL make it EXTREMELY APPARENT"
Sweet lord, I haven't reacted this way to a piece of writing in a WHILE. I was just vibing, but then the bit with the pin- god, I shuddered. I had to bite down on something. What an incredible story.
"and let's see if we survive the night" god it'd be hilarious if they filmed this at like 1pm
