past and recent footage of Alan Kahn, author of The Speed Bag Bible, hitting the speed bag "freestyle" (no music) and Punch Drumming(TM), using the bag beat as a rhythm instrument.
I was starting to get a little bored of doing the usual basic stuff on my speed bag. I came on here, looked up some videos. This guy blows me away with all the stuff I've been missing. Now I can't get enough. Thanks a million. Best speed bagger I've ever seen.
Muscle memory and consistent repetition is a big factor. You will be amazed how much more acute your reaction to error will be. You will "see" and errant rebound or feel a mis-hit and correct quickly, especially on a small, fast bag at high speed. .
Alan your the man. I bought your book 8 years ago. I had no idea that when I got it I'd be embarking on a lifelong obcession. Can't thank you enough for writing the book. Speed Bag Mike.
Mrkahn, your are the best and your tape and book is unmatched thanks for making it possible for many practioners including my self help builded our performance on the speed bag .
just got a speed bag for xmas and i love it. 2 days on it now and i cant believe my improvement. just starting to get the double punch rhthm going...but every time i look at this video my ego deflates significantly which is good as it inspires me to keep practicing. keep it up champ!
Proof that practice makes perfect... Absolutely ridiculous.. I finally got my speed bag set up again and shall be taking it serious and hopefully in 35 years... I'll be half as good.. Absolutely brilliant.
When you think you seen it all and there can be nothing new. You realize that you need to look harder and that it has already been done before. Hats off to your brotha, this video is amazing. Cant wait to mix some of this fun in to my speedbag warmup, to break up some of that 30 minute monotony.
your an inspiration for many, too many people talking crap about whether you can box. Me, I'm just appreciating your skill. Doesn't mean you need to be a fighter!!!
Actually at 3:09 - 3:14 I was sending a telepathic message to the viewer. If you don't get it then you're not telepathic. Just relax and feel the beat. Soon, it will come.
I love the speed bag too! It's so much fun! And you're definitely one of the best I've seen hit it and I've seen world champions hit it in person! I make cartoons:).
Hi Mr kahan My name is Dee Pooler my daughter and I love your work I have been very criative on the bag but man you are truly amazing and I have improved alot I've been involved in martial arts and boxing about 4 decades.speed bag bible ***** Thanks again. Dee
Oh man! I didn’t know this was a thing! Never saw this sport/discipline anywhere. It’s crazy. Mind-eye coordination, beat, cycling, all at one?! You’d be a good drummer! Ahah very entertaining and bravo to you sir, I would never be able to do this!
Thanks. Actually I was a percussionist/drummer most of my earlier life. Got a way from the set and under the board. Now I'm a "Punch Drummer" but the improvised expression of rhythm is the same.
Alan, I still have the speed bag bible and personalized tape you sent me back in '93 or '94 (I think). My name is Joe and I was working a security detail at the Mirage in Vegas. I'd taken martial arts before but never worked out on a speed bag. The stuff you showed me that day was AWESOME and i incorporated speed bag into my workout because of you. Thanks for taking the time to share!
Thanks. (to be 46 again!..) I can personally attest that Age And Arthritis sucks. Guard your cartilage. You're really going to want it when your "older". lol.
jst put a bag in my basement...ive been tryin it at the gym...my son started 4 daysagoand is already real good...i think i started out wrong, tryin to learn the rt way..u r amazing..kim
It's interesting that you are talking about it. I began doing some speed bag drills, and and almost instantly (within a couple of days) my left knee started hurting rally bad (could barely go up and down the stairs) I didn't put these two together until I red this comment.
@Psypherion. Ah yes, If I could reverse the order of this to end at the beginning I would be in a lot better shape, weight at least 40lbs less and enjoy life without pain. Getting old sucks and is highly overrated. My advice is exercise in moderation and stop before you ground your joints to dust. And don't fall for the TV networks hooha that 60 is the new 40. Trust me, 60 is 60, especially if you kept acted like you were 20 when you were 40. Regardless, Keep Punching!
Hi Bosslady360. I am very glad my materials have helped you. People like you are the reason I created them. I knew there were people who would want to learn.
Awesome, I just started speedbag at my gym 4 days ago. I started pawing at it but now I can keep it fairly straight and bit quicker. They also put up a new speed bag last night!!! I was thinking about buying my own cause it was looking cruddy but they must have seen me hitting it every night. It is hidden, I didn't even know we had one in the gym for 3 months. No heavy bags... =(
Good morning. The book arrived a few days ago on September 7. The book is well-published in a large format, which allows you to read the content and pictures from a distance during exercises. Everything is perfectly explained and shown in illustrations. Everything is written in understandable language. Perfect for foreigners. I currently exercise for about an hour every day. I'm doing really well. I just need patience. Super fun. You left something useful to the world. Something that will never die. @@speedbag1
