i know fred is always doing these kinds of characters as a parody but somehow deep down i truly believe he's playing himself but slightly exaggerated 😂
@@frankmarsh1159 He literally calls it an echo chamber. Which if you follow the Abbey Road model should be a big open concrete/tile lined room in the basement with a speaker at one end and mics at the other. But I think that's all part of the joke.

Dude in all honesty the drums sounded freaking next level. I dont know who there sound engineer was but damn, people would spend a lot of money to get that sound.
im convinced the sound engineering for this skit was intentionally done at a recording engineer's level. When he does the "no no no no" beatles vocals, he's moving his head mic to mic and his voice is actually panning through the audio left and right relative to the mics.
@@crazycats535 Yeah it's just a completely standard Aeron chair. What's extra good though is if you look up photos of Electric Lady Studios, they actually are using black Aeron chairs.
the punchline is essentially that jack white was able to build and create his own studio label, record and cut everything himself and source all the vintage gear he wanted. almost like a mythical figure for audiophiles who follow him
I love how he says: "I just put some new equipment at the recording studio. Bring your beer." He says it in such a typical microphone voice, you know the type of voice radio hosts use.
That would be on the B side of the Pet Sounds album... ya know..where the weird 'unreliable shirt' goes that only hardcore fans enjoy! Hardcore Pet Sounds fans.
Dude, when the echo is going on and Lance goes to stand up and he makes him sit down and points up like, "you can't leave now, listen to this symphony".
"I've got all the top quality stuff. I just need the top quality people. I just gotta attract that ONE important artist, but it hasn't happened yet. It's a matter of getting people up dere, youknowwhatImean."
Imagining being alone with someone in the studio & they’re playing a tom & staring at you like Fred is at 1:50 & it kills me, so ridiculously hilarious
Just watched the 2016 Jakob Dylan documentary "Echo in the Canyon." I recommend watching that and then watching this again...it will make this sketch funnier still.
I love that they got Jack White to play in this and just stand around. Like Brad Pitt's cameo in Deadpool: an intentional waste of immense talent in both cases, and it's so damned good!
I love how NO ONE on Portlandia ever gets hip to themselves. It is the unspeakable sin. After that you have to take the next plane to New York, and the dream of the '90s is dead for you.
Canyon, canyon, canyon, canyon, canyon. Gets up to leave, shoves him back down like something new is gonna happen. Lol. This character is my favorite of Fred’s. Gavin Quinn
I spot the Wurlitzer 200A electric piano... famously used by Supertramp! Not only that, but to the left is the Fender Rhodes Stage 73, used by Steely Dan and other groups.
I like that this bit works on multiple levels. On a high level, it’s a funny exaggeration of an audio enthusiast who has gone all in on his passion. On a low level though, he’s referencing real world equipment and effects that are legitimately cool and are probably well respected in real world audio/music/studio communities. That echo chamber was clutch.
JACK WHITE, y'all. Fred, good gawd....this gets my goat every time. I worship Jack white as my lord and savior and "brother" and Fred, boy, I love you, too
0:33 Love how he has what looks like a Shure Beta 52A (for a kick drum) placed behind him on the kit in a spot that makes absolutely no sense. You know Fred did that on purpose just to see if other studio geeks like us would notice.
Love the slow mo turn, “THATS THE ONE.”
"These are the original keys used on Pet Sounds" I died
best line
"Bring your beer"
One of my favourite lines from this show.
I really like that guy. I wish I had a friend like that.
The slow turn in the chair with the line "That's the one.." gets me every time. I always have to watch it more than once.
😮thats it. That’s the one

i know fred is always doing these kinds of characters as a parody but somehow deep down i truly believe he's playing himself but slightly exaggerated 😂
"The best character fred plays is himself." - Fred Armisen's ex-wife
Yas! I totally agree haha
This is true
Gahven is a genius character. I mean who else can do this face 1:05
Of course how else could he parody it so well.
I love how the "echo" room is actually covered with sound-absorbing foam...
It's not an echo room it's a clean delay sound.
Nerd alert
Well technically it's a vocal booth...
@@frankmarsh1159 He literally calls it an echo chamber. Which if you follow the Abbey Road model should be a big open concrete/tile lined room in the basement with a speaker at one end and mics at the other. But I think that's all part of the joke.
@@Danimal1577 And your point is? I'm a nerd appreciating nerdy ironic jokes in a show about ironic nerds?
For people that have never recorded an album, worked with engineers or producers you might not know how absolutely true this is.
I’m into field recording and do this too.
They didn't even listen to the decays for all that long though.
Honestly, it's true down to the keys they used on Pet Sounds
@d R looking forward to the 180g vinyl re-release of this comment.
Lol for real
I'm aware that this is comedy but I'd unironically love to make an album with this guy
Seriously though. Neumann? Not too shabby buddy.
“.......THAT’S the one!!!” Is the best part of recording with any engineer
i got a friend like this.. same mustache and everything
Hope it’s pet sounds-esque
Are you aware that he's making fun of people like you?
Why have I watched this 10 times and just now realized it’s Field of Dreams 🤦🏻♀️
The Beatles mic segment is very funny.
That's a Neumann.
@@alanmalcheski8882 $5,000
It sounds like Ozzy Osborne too.
How dare he make fun of Lennon's voice
its actually mixed in stereo too..
This is probably my favorite segment just because I've known at least 5 guys exactly like this. 😂😂😂
Are they in a band?

Is this the same thread that was used on pet sounds? The clicks when I click on it sound very similar.
This attempt to extend the joke beyond its potential was originally used on Pet Sounds
i love this character
I’m terrified and excited to become this guy when I never get married.
women love a guy who's passionate about something. Just take reasonably good care of your health and appearance, have goals, and know how to be a good listener
This is painfully realistic. I love it
That slow turnaround to "that's the one" may be my most quoted line of Portlandia
"That's a Neumann"
😆😆😆
I also love how the other guy never says a single word
The brian wilson impression is on point.
The way the echoes were filtered as they decayed was really beautiful.
I saw this sketch and thought it was silly then i get more into music and come back to it after binging Glenn Fricker videos. Genius
Dude in all honesty the drums sounded freaking next level. I dont know who there sound engineer was but damn, people would spend a lot of money to get that sound.
Fred Armisen is actually a really talented drummer so he knew how to set it up properly and tune it right.
You hear that snap? Hear that clap?
That’s the same sound they used on „Pet Sounds“.
im convinced the sound engineering for this skit was intentionally done at a recording engineer's level. When he does the "no no no no" beatles vocals, he's moving his head mic to mic and his voice is actually panning through the audio left and right relative to the mics.
this is one of the most Portland portlandia bits ever.
It's been my lifelong dream to own a Detroit lamp.
The way he looks at those keys
Jack freaking White!
I went to graduate school half-a-block from Electric Ladyland. Would pass it reverently every day going back to my room.
Yes. You and the millions of others that walked up 8th street off 6th Avenue. The generic CHAIR was the joke. Like blind idolatry...

As good as this whole sketch is, Fred's face on the drums is what keeps me coming back for more.
He looks like a fish hook character
Portlandia was a hilarious show, I wish that they would have a cast reunion of all the Portlandia cast members.
the punchline is essentially that jack white was able to build and create his own studio label, record and cut everything himself and source all the vintage gear he wanted. almost like a mythical figure for audiophiles who follow him
Except we have nothing worthwhile to record with our stuff.
The fat guy is Jack White?! Wow! He's let himself go!
@@blackbird5634 how else can someone write such 'chunky riffs' 🤣✌️
The layers in this! When Jack White appeared, I was fully expecting a whole "team" to join him and start practicing, like in Field of Dreams.
Jack plays the fat guy too

This is one of my favorite bits from all of Portlandia. I can relate 😀
"I had this lamp brought in from Detroit."
Jack White: Can I have my lamp back?
Him looking through those keys is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.
those are the original keys used on pet sounds
that slurp had me rolling

Now I know why Fred said, “Bring your beer.”
The slurp got me also. Fred is so funny
legit those are some stellar mics on display
