- "He knew there was something wrong with his tax affairs. Most will think that's not the way anyone should behave, and certainly not the Chancellor of the Exchequer."
Nadhim Zahawi was aware he was committing tax avoidance, founder of Tax Policy Associates Dan Neidle explains on #TimesRadio.

A typical Conservative MP: a liar.
I think you mean corrupt scumbag wankers
Security services ignoring illegal Russian donations, big loan guarantees, VIP Lanes, massive misleading parliament.. oh this carelessness appears systematic.
Thankfully there are journalists like this man who believe in holding politicians to account. This is bedrock of democracy
In Russia there would have been a presser praising for how amazingly accurate his tax returns were. Who am I kidding? There would never be a tax investigation in Russia, unless it a frame job to get rid of an enemy.
It's not "envy" that upsets people, what an awful trope...it's the injustice...a lack of fairness.
Absolutely! Well said and blame to those who would try to make it a matter of envy. That’s shameful.
Throw the Tories out
Of course he did it was deliberately hidden
Typical an MP allegedly fiddling his taxes. They would come after us like no tomorrow if it was an ordinary taxpayer even if we owned one penny.
The public get the government they deserve.
Tory voters don't care one jot whether the Tory party fiddles with their taxes, shoves billions of taxpayer money to their already wealthy friends or engages in corruption.
Tory politicians know this.
They know that they can commit any number of crimes or dodgy deals, corruption and a lot of the public will still proudly show up and vote for them.
Which MP was it who put their energy bill on expenses to keep his horse stables warm
Zahawi, the very guy that tried to fiddle his taxes
These people are filth.
*WHAT A HERO THIS GUY IS....!* its a massive thing to be faces with a govt minister threatening a £2 million law suit
A crook, plain and simple.
crooks always know what there doing
"Rich people just do things differently"......... Ridiculous.
There needs to be proper consequences for breaking the law if an MP. They should have the book thrown at them to make an example of them if caught breaking the law. We can not let this keep happening where the rich and privileged get away without any consequences.
They are mainly lawyers and accountants
They make the laws and the tax regulations.
How can we expect lawyers and accountants to understand finance and the Law. ???????🤔.
And they set the standard for everyone else
Can we also remind ourselves that Zahawi was very keen to become chancellor at this specific period, even knowing that the role was very likely to only have a short tenure. People at the time pointed out how strange it was that he was putting so much political capital into getting what seemed to be a poisoned chalice at the time.
It's not careless it's cultural.
Well done sir, you are a true public servant 👏🏼👏🏼
Why should I pay so much tax at a relatively low wage when the people in charge use loopholes to avoid tax they owe to the country they are running. Rally the farmers of the north to march on Al-London
Dan Neidle deserves a peerage. But, alas, he's not the son of a KGB agent and he's not given a donation to the Tory party and he's not got any dirt on a careless PM, so he won't get one.
My guess is in most countries if one examined closely all representatives one would find many engage in tax avoidance while they decide where your taxes are spent.
Go Dan! I wouldn't mess with you Buddy...
Well done Dan against enormous corruption and manipulation be stood his ground.
Like no one would know about a multimillion pound deal and the tax implications! He told his accountants to avoid paying but he got caught!
Carelessness is an act of omission and not the catch-all excuse being suggested.
He should be contemplating the taste of porridge. If he knew there was something wrong and he knew and allowed it to happen, then he is guilty .
YouGov, no it wasn´t me gov
OK he's careless , it was only £3m, not someone you want in charge of our money then.
Lizz Truss and Boris spaffed billions
What a shower of 💩
£3.7 million. With interest and penalties nearly £5 million.
What do we know about Mr Zs father?
*Tories Out ->*
This guy is a bit of quiet hero. It’s not sexy, but the few who keeps tabs on those made nearly unaccountable via wealth or other power sources are in extremely short supply and sorely needed. The UK’s scandalous libel laws mean this guy is often risking his neck to bring us the realities of Moneyland’s citizens.
Rotten to the core.
Careless? To the tune of several millions in his favour? If it’s true I don’t want someone that incompetent anywhere near a responsible position in government. If it’s not carelessness, well I don’t want anyone that dishonest anywhere government. Oh dear…. Are there any other options?
It's time to change the entire political structure in this Country. Why are we being "governed" by multi millionaires ? That's a conflict of interests.
Resign, Nadim. You’ll be back at work by Monday if you use the Braverman standard.
I am fascinated the "mistake" scoundrels make always seem to be in their benefit. When was the last time they declared 27 million extra income and over pay the taxes,,, never happen.
Clearly.
Get Zahawi off the gravy train; dismissed.
look into the tax affairs of pretty much every politician in the uK and you will find undeclared earnings - they all come out of politics much richer than they enter - every politician in every party.
Concentrate on the “big things”…like honesty and morality are not big things.
Who's next 🤔 😳
politax i thinks
‘Given the slip’ = escape …
Filming radio reveals the ignorance 😂
That was funny. Given the slip. Aasmah is funny
We need to be a bit more generous here. He may not have paid his taxes, but he did so in a very specific way.
Bias reporting trying to not sound bias. Nice try. Sorry but your beloved blue team f'd up.
Claiming thousands to heat his horses stables, and now this, who'd have thought he's a crook and a Tory.
Any guesses on who the next story will involve? He didn't say what party did he.
