- Tax expert Dan Neidle, who investigated Nadhim Zahawi's financial affairs, has told Sky News the Conservative Party chairman received around £27m but did not initially pay tax.
He said Mr Zahawi's description of the situation as a "careless" error was telling.
It has since emerged he settled the dispute with tax authorities while he was Chancellor.

Kay tries to spin Dan as a left wing crony, Dan proves her wrong and shuts her up straight away. We need more people like Dan to tell the truth.
A new independent regulatory authority should be set up overseeing parliament's affairs and Dan should be a leading part of it.
Yeah - I thought it was just the BBC who were tory biased with their payout sleaze? She really did try and skewer him on his political views and undermine his integrity.

Dan Neidle is a seriously impressive person. To be threatened by lawyers and still have the conviction that he was in the right, takes serious cojones. A pat on the back and a glass of wine (or whatever) for that man.
The guy is an ex-Clifford Chance partner (Magic Circle law firm)-he probably laughed at those letters.
I agree go after him. However in answer too your remark i believe his bravery was in part to the fact he said about a leak and therefore he would have known more than he is saying.
@Moon Station Art Agreed. It is a measure of the decline of our country that such a person who was born and raised in another country has wormed his way into the highest Offices of State. Great nations are invariably destroyed from within via external covert agencies.
He knew that by just threatening him, those lawyers were in breach of professional standards.

Can't say she did herself any favours with that one. He came across as clear and accurate; she came across as not having done her homework and was trying to attack him in an inappropriate way rather than to attack the subject of the matter. I think his hat collection is safe!

Failing to declare £27 million is not an error and Kay bringing up Dan's personal political allegiance into this was poor, she was trying to make out it was all about political point scoring.

Watching Kay burley try to conduct an interview is like watching a fish try to breathe air
She's just horrid
She begins the interview by trying to frame Dan as a leftie lawyer type and immediately gets shut down! Then her response is "Ok..." in the most patronising and condescending tone she can muster. Hilarious. She's such a waste of time.

She'd used the word 'careless' all through the interview and said 'oh' I didn't know when the very impressive interviewee told her 'careless' had a specific meaning in tax law .... if she didn't know that then she was being unprofessional... if she did and continued using it in its common usage she was more than a little disingenuous.The interviewee remained v cool and collected and on top of his brief.

I watched this interview live this morning, I was sickened by the so called journalist, she tried to discredit the guest from her opening line, then she attempted to down play the actions of the minister as an oversight or simple clumsy mistake. The bosses at Sky news need to take a good long hard look at her so called impartiality as she clearly tried to shaft the guest.
ummm - remember who the boss of Sky actually is - Murdoch. Part of the same team as Zahawi - international plutocrats.
I love that when a Tory minister says something, Kay takes that as absolute irrefutable fact...but when anyone who isn't a Tory minister says something she has to keep asking the same question in different ways to try and (often fail) to trip them up.

I don't get it. Ms. Burley appeared to be more aghast that Keir Starmer was in Davos last week. This man (Zahawi) was the chancellor, folks. He had oversight of the agency investigating his tax liability. This isn't 27K that slipped through the cracks, it's 27M. Cleverly's excuses over the weekend only made this nonsense sleazier.

Why are these people so greedy? They are obsessed with becoming super rich. I don't think they are safe to be running the country. People like Nadim and Rishi have more money they than know what to do with but still crave more. It's pure greed and it's a mental illness.
I admire Dan’s patience throughout this interview. Burley could have been replaced by “2 short planks” in terms of her ability to understand what Dan was saying.
She understands perfectly well.But her sympathies are routinely right-wing and so she endeavours to undermine Dan as much as she is able....she just ends up looking stupid because what Zahawi has done is indefensible

Brilliant explanation by Dan Neidle of this very tawdry episode in our political history. And how brave of this tax expert to stick to the issue even though he was threatened by Zahawi's lawyers. I find this whole episode utterly disgraceful, just another example of our politicians serving for their own ends to the detriment of the public good.
As an American, admittedly, "I haven't a dog in the fight." However, the aforementioned means I'm well-practiced at spotting apologist "news hosts" whose agenda tends to align with the organizations that sign their checks. The first rule of shielding illegal activity is to cast doubt on the creditability of experts and independent oversight authorities.

HMRC are only interested in the money. They were paid what was owed unchallenged, which is very unusual plus a fine. A very good result for them.

If it is tax avoidance then he should not go to court. Tax avoidance is perfectly legal. Tax evasion is not. Tax avoidance means exploiting LEGAL (albeit unethical) means in order to pay less tax.

I simply love the very precise language that Dan Neidle is using here. I love his style, I love how calm and yet direct he is being, I love how he immediately dismantles Kay's "interpretation". I love how he delivers, at least what seem like, very accurate recollections of conversations that have happened. I also love how he clearly distinguishes between facts vs interpretation by laying out the various options that arise from interpretating said facts. Fascinating interview, one of the very rare good interviews that Sky has undertaken which is a miracle considering the lack of skill of the interviewer!

Everybody is entitled to support a political party without the inference being drawn that it influences them professionally. Kay Burley should have apologised.

27 million? £3.7m even with extra £1.3m fines is far lower %wise than what most of us pay on our incomes.
So he only paid 18.5% with the fine, without the fine 13.7% I want his tax rate

That is because it is a capital gain when the shares in YouGov was sold NOT INCOME. Capital gains have been taxed at a lower rate than income due to Labour govt. change

Zahawi is my MP 😔...remember folks that he is the guy that used tax payers' money (through expenses) to heat up his stables. Now, I know gas and electricity are dear, but given that his net worth is estimated at around £100m, you'd think he'd be able to look after his pet horses himself.

Dan Neidle has shown exemplary journalistic skills in his investigation of Zahawi, and he showed even more exemplary patience with the way he handled Burley's clumsy and uncomprehending questions.
So now every expert needs to first state what party they support before being interviewed by this so called journalist.
The Chancellor should not be making errors. It's just an excuse for him being caught tax dodging.
He should be subject to a complete audit now, they will find all sorts

I think she’s struggling to understand exactly what this means and how serious it is. She seems to want to avoid sensationalism. This man is extremely refreshing though, most interviewees aren’t so forthcoming and clear.

So Zahawi made an £8,000 "mistake" over heating stables claimed on expenses now another "mistake" over £27MILLION that apparently just slipped his mind from a former chancellor of the Exchequer. He really must think the public are very stupid indeed. He should be sacked.
