Tax expert: Nadhim Zahawi received £27m without initially paying tax

  • Tax expert Dan Neidle, who investigated Nadhim Zahawi's financial affairs, has told Sky News the Conservative Party chairman received around £27m but did not initially pay tax.
    He said Mr Zahawi's description of the situation as a "careless" error was telling.
    It has since emerged he settled the dispute with tax authorities while he was Chancellor.

    Dan Neidle is a seriously impressive person. To be threatened by lawyers and still have the conviction that he was in the right, takes serious cojones. A pat on the back and a glass of wine (or whatever) for that man.

    Can't say she did herself any favours with that one. He came across as clear and accurate; she came across as not having done her homework and was trying to attack him in an inappropriate way rather than to attack the subject of the matter. I think his hat collection is safe!

      She'd used the word 'careless' all through the interview and said 'oh' I didn't know when the very impressive interviewee told her 'careless' had a specific meaning in tax law .... if she didn't know that then she was being unprofessional... if she did and continued using it in its common usage she was more than a little disingenuous.The interviewee remained v cool and collected and on top of his brief.

    I watched this interview live this morning, I was sickened by the so called journalist, she tried to discredit the guest from her opening line, then she attempted to down play the actions of the minister as an oversight or simple clumsy mistake. The bosses at Sky news need to take a good long hard look at her so called impartiality as she clearly tried to shaft the guest.

    I love that when a Tory minister says something, Kay takes that as absolute irrefutable fact...but when anyone who isn't a Tory minister says something she has to keep asking the same question in different ways to try and (often fail) to trip them up.

    I don't get it. Ms. Burley appeared to be more aghast that Keir Starmer was in Davos last week. This man (Zahawi) was the chancellor, folks. He had oversight of the agency investigating his tax liability. This isn't 27K that slipped through the cracks, it's 27M. Cleverly's excuses over the weekend only made this nonsense sleazier.

    Brilliant explanation by Dan Neidle of this very tawdry episode in our political history. And how brave of this tax expert to stick to the issue even though he was threatened by Zahawi's lawyers. I find this whole episode utterly disgraceful, just another example of our politicians serving for their own ends to the detriment of the public good.

      I think that they call them slapp orders. Litigations against investigating journalist to suppress information becoming public by bringing cases with no legal merit but which involve the défendent in huge legal bills.

      If it is tax avoidance then he should not go to court. Tax avoidance is perfectly legal. Tax evasion is not. Tax avoidance means exploiting LEGAL (albeit unethical) means in order to pay less tax.

    I simply love the very precise language that Dan Neidle is using here. I love his style, I love how calm and yet direct he is being, I love how he immediately dismantles Kay's "interpretation". I love how he delivers, at least what seem like, very accurate recollections of conversations that have happened. I also love how he clearly distinguishes between facts vs interpretation by laying out the various options that arise from interpretating said facts. Fascinating interview, one of the very rare good interviews that Sky has undertaken which is a miracle considering the lack of skill of the interviewer!

      That is because it is a capital gain when the shares in YouGov was sold NOT INCOME. Capital gains have been taxed at a lower rate than income due to Labour govt. change

    Zahawi is my MP 😔...remember folks that he is the guy that used tax payers' money (through expenses) to heat up his stables. Now, I know gas and electricity are dear, but given that his net worth is estimated at around £100m, you'd think he'd be able to look after his pet horses himself.

      I think she’s struggling to understand exactly what this means and how serious it is. She seems to want to avoid sensationalism. This man is extremely refreshing though, most interviewees aren’t so forthcoming and clear.

    So Zahawi made an £8,000 "mistake" over heating stables claimed on expenses now another "mistake" over £27MILLION that apparently just slipped his mind from a former chancellor of the Exchequer. He really must think the public are very stupid indeed. He should be sacked.
