    I’m just a few seconds into this video and I’m internally cheering! I keep telling people that you can usually get rid of the defensive behavior by setting them up properly and not catching them unaware and vulnerable. Right on, Tom. No wonder I adore you.
    Also, Gar is awesome, so I love that you collabed with him! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

      This one was a long time coming, as it's difficult to address this topic without address where people get the idea that they can be kept this way... It drives me NUTS when people come on and tell me that a species is "crazy" or "nasty" or aggressive, when mine clearly are not. And why are they more calm? Because I give them room to dig. It drives Gar nuts, too, so this was an AWESOME topic for us to collaborate on. As always, Jodi, thanks so much!!! :)

      People, Humans, H. sapiens ... surely ranking as one of the upmost intelligent creatures in this whole entire universe.
      Can be one of the most inconsiderate, least empathetic and totally naive virtue less species imaginable.
      The systematics are a complete fascination in their own right.
      To cage an animal, disrupt its habitat, move its enclosure around like on a roller coaster, bang it around like it's in an earthquake, poke the animal, prod the animal, and then hear a human state that the animal is aggressive towards humans, is actually a psychological shift of blame.
      Absolutely amazing.

    I found a perfect container for this hobby, it's called a fermonster. They go up to 7 gallons, would be perfect for a big burrower, 12x21. I kind of like the whole idea of a tall, burrowing container, it's not a terrarium and it's different. The spider has a real hideout. Just, it's a lot of dirt to look at, but it gives the spider a good habitat. At least the top looks good.

    Love the video Tom. Great info. I would have liked to have seen a little bit of info as to how to control mold in those enclosures. It seems no matter how hard I try I always end up with mold. I’ve started using springtails in my enclosures but sometimes they’re not enough.
    BTW love that you collaborated with Gar on this. Love his channel and his info and he’s the breeding master it seems. Wish him the best on his recovery. 🤓👍🏼

      Hey, Alex! Thanks so much, bud! I've had some improvement with the springtails, but they don't stop everything. We get a yellow fungus/mushroom around here that pops of out of nowhere. It's harmless, but it drives me nuts. I'm going to have a buddy of mine on my podcast to talk about fungi, and I'm hoping to learn a lot from him. Also, there is supposedly a tea that you can add to the substrate that helps prevent it. I'll have to find out what that is! Thanks, bud!

      Hi Tom! The Dark Den sent me over to your channel, great content. I think the mushroom you're talking about might be Leucocoprinus birnbaumii , or the Plant Pot Dapperling. They're fairly common and as the name suggests, prefer growing in moist top soil. I'm curious if that's your culprit?
      Thanks for the info and keep up the good work!

    Great informative video. Along with yourself, Gar is one of the best people for husbandry advice. My E.Murinus is also pretty docile. She has nice deep substrate, plenty of room, and seems to be happy in her enclosure. The only aggression she ever shows is to her dinner

    Couldn’t agree more! When I first got my C. lividus, I had her in a temporary cage (which unfortunately didn’t allow much room to dig) for 4 months, and she was CRAZY. But as soon as I re-housed her into a permanent enclosure (which gave her plenty of room to dig), she took to the hole I made for her, made a burrow, and I haven’t gotten any defensive behavior since! And when I catch her out, it’s simply thrilling. Great vid as always Tom! 👍

    Hi Tom,
    Love the video! Lovely t that Gar showed us 👍.
    Don't think that you have a video on making your bedding. Might be a nice short video, one on how you mix the topsoil with the peat moss and vermiculite to get your mixture?
    Great job on showing how to make the fossorial enclosure properly with options at different sizes!!!
    One last idea is maybe for your next beginner series do a top 9 instead of 10. With a catch: top 3 arboreal, top 3 terrestrial, and top 3 fossorial species for beginners.
    I don't think that anyone else has tried it yet. And might be a good thing for someone who wants to choose a specific type.
    Keep up with the great work and videos. Love how you make your t's as comfortable as possible and not just make them do what you need them to do for a cool video. But work around what is best for the situation and safety for both you and them.

      Hi, Michael! Here's and older video I did for mixing substrate. I can certainly do a newer one: ua-cam.com/video/j176cyhsi8I/v-deo.html

    I use a peat/loam mixture myself. It goes in wet and twice a year i will "flood" the tanks by putting them in a layer of water. The water seeps in the front vent and will wet the bottom layer again. Works like a champ!

    This is a great video Tom! I got two C lividums at about 1.5" and now they're up to... idk 3? I never see em long enough! I made this post on your video when I got them - this advice and approach is 100% correct. The seller told me they were quick and aggressive during feeding, but he had them in 2" tall deli cups with 0.5" substrate. Of course they were pissed when he opened the container!! I rehoused with plenty of room to burrow and they went 6" down immediately. Much easier to feed and no anxiety for me when I open the lid. It's especially important for faster fossorials. Keep up the good work, and next round of stickers maybe consider a 10" sheet with multiple smaller T and your logo. I'm low on sticker free laptop space 😉👍

    When talking about tarantulas, I use "Defensiveness" to describe defensive behavior. The more defensive, the more likely they are to stand their ground instead of retreating. I use "Aggressiveness" to describe feeding responses, which is a relative term as well. I would NEVER grab a bolus, or adjust the water dish, with my hand in- say an A geniculata enclosure. They attack the water as I'm filling the bowl.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 роки тому

      I agree completely, Dan. Aggressive insinuates that they are looking for trouble and that there is nothing that the keeper can do to prevent the behavior. When you realized that they feel threatened and are just trying to defend themselves, it give more power to the keeper to keep them calm.

    Hey Tom, sorry to keep bumping older videos but i love revisiting specific species and general care videos like this when placing an order (or even prepping for a rehouse) to brush up on the husbandry for my incoming additions and to remind myself of any potential changes to care as they grow out of the sling stage. I have 4 Chilobrachys species, an H. gigas, a C. sp hati hati, and an H. sp black femur on order. I'm really glad that you like the cereal boxes because, before seeing this video, I had ordered a case off amazon to potentially use for arboreals and then ordered a couple more cases thinking they would be good for fossorials as well. I was a little concerned about the milkiness of them so its good to know that you like them and also use them. Have you tried using them for arboreal juveniles?

  • @webbrowser6454

    Before moving up to the glass terrariums and past dram vials I like to use acrylic "display cases" made for displaying figurines or sports memorabilia. Check Amazon, TopPro makes taller (~8"H x ~4"W) cases I use for my juvenile arboreal and fossorial species. Terrestrial I use a 5"x5" cube, not sure of the brand, but also clear acrylic. Much cheaper than buying an enclosure marked up for the specificity of tarantula housing. Punch your own holes, of course.

    I have an H. Gigas and a King Baboon, sorry can’t remember scientific name right now, that have both made awesome burrows and are typically calm, feed great, and come out when I feed so I can see them. The King Baboon is slightly defensive as it has given me a threat pose when I first got her and she is a little more defensive even now with her burrow, but generally if I don’t mess around she grabs her food and goes back in. My H. Gigas is a total sweet heart, popping up to feed doing some happy dances and going back into the burrow. Although my Chilobrachys Guangxiensis is a total spaz ball and hasn’t burrowed at all yet, she gets totally freaked out when I open the enclosure, but doesn’t threat pose, just bolts all over the place

    Oh, also, I found some good enclosure for fossorial spiders. There's a brand of enclosures called Reptizoo on Amazon. Most of their stuff is overpriced, but they have an 8×8×8 and 12×12×12 enclosure, that has a sliding/locking lid. They ship flat, and are not waterproof, but they're $55, which isn't bad for a glass enclosure (with shipping, if you have prime). They have furniture feet, which I think you said you like. I have an Ephebopus murinus in one (12×12×12), and it looks great.

    Hey Tom, are there any old worlds that are considered 'terrestrial'? So far I have referred to all of them as either 'arboreal' (like pokies) or 'fossorial' (chilobrachys, P. muticus etc.). The closest thing I have heard to terrestrial is P. murinus being 'semi-arboreal', similar to the C. cyanopubescens. Are there any truly terrestrial Old worlds? Btw, love your podcast!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 роки тому +2

      It's funny, as I'm working on a video about old worlds, and I was just trying think of one that was terrestrial. I couldn't think of any! I've had ones that adapt to a more terrestrial lifestyle, like my Harpactira pulchripes, but they are usually considered fossorial. Some will not dig even though they normally would in the wild, and we end up with a spider that lives terrestrially with lots of webbing. I've seen this with the P. murinus and the C. darlingi. So, I think that most are naturally programmed to be fossorial, but they can sometimes choose to adapt to a more terrestrial lifestyle. And thanks so much !

    Hey Tom, quick question if I may.
    I have a large Juvenile Chilobrachys sp kaeng krachen that has recently molted but, because it molted deep in its burrow, I can't quite pinpoint the day it molted. It did disappear for a good while (close to 3 weeks) and has recently emerged from its burrow much larger and darker. My issue is, because I don't know when it molted, I don't know exactly when it's safe to feed and wondered is there a way to know with fossorials when you try feeding after a molt when you can't be sure how long has passed.
    Thanks once again dude

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  Рік тому

      Hello! Generally speaking, once they open their burrows and either throw our their molts or hang out at the mouths they are ready to eat. If you're not sure, you can always drop a prekilled item at the top of its burrow and see if it disappears. If it does, it's ready to go!

    Hello, I was wondering, I mix my substrate (coco fiber and topsoil) at varying ratio's, most of the time closer to 50 50, but I always premix and moisten all the substrate in the process, is this worse than adding it in, adding water in layers as you did here? I add the coco fiber first, then the water, then mix it up by hand, then add the topsoil and shake the container to mix if possible, and then mix by hand again while picking out any debris from the topsoil that may have made it in (small chunks of bark or sticks at most). I didn't think it would make much of a difference. The first time I mixed them and did not add the water, I did find it difficult to get water to soak in (Thankfully was only rehousing brachy's who like it dry anyway)

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 роки тому

      You can absolutely mix it moist. I've done that before as well. I just have a lot of arid species, so sometimes I keep it dry and add water when I'm ready to use it. Sometimes, I have to rehydrate the coco bricks, so it's already moist when I mix it up.

      Yeah, they can be quite secretive. I've found that they usually won't leave prey in their burrows. If they kill something that they don't want to eat, they usually drag it outside. If you're ever not sure if it's in the eating mood, you can always drop something prekilled at the burrow entrance at night. If it's gone the next day, it's still eating.

    100% spot on with aggressive vs. defensive. I feel like the term 'aggressive' also comes with some negative connotations, and it helps when educating people who are already scared of the spider in the first place. I Love those sterilite containers as enclosures. Milky, sure. But a great size with good locks. I actually have still been finding a lot of them in Walmart. Wasn't sure if that's where you may have gotten them before, but may help if you are running short! Haha

    Does it bug you that so many people watch your videos and leave comments but only a handful give you a like. Not sure why this happens. If you get 10% of your viewers to like your video you are averaging. I love your videos. I let others know.

      Hi, Joyce! Not really. I mean, it would be nice if more people did it, but I don't let those things bother me. I DO, however, truly appreciate anyone who takes the time to comment and who give me a like. That means a lot. So, as always, thank you!!!
