I truly appreciate that...seriously. I actually have an update to this video planned for early summer. I finally got footage of the last species that I wanted to include.
Hey Tom! Awesome video, just enjoying my one day off and catching up on some "fun" videos. Totally agree with you on the G. iheringi, I love those guys so much, they are super pretty and I just love the name "iheringi" and "Entre Rios". Bumba horrida still kinda freak me out, they are beautiful but too true-spider like. I love Theraphosa but I'm unfortunately quite sensitive to their hairs and while I've never been haired by the spider I had an incident with a moult lol. Filling the void for "Giant spider" with my L. carpenteri and O. violaceopes :) They won't hair me 😂 Here is my list, the first 3 are in order and everything after that is kinda wibbly wobbly. I put "and genus" because I could easily fill the entire list with species from these genera. I know I'm going to have a MUCH harder time doing the Old World list... 1. Ephebopus murinus + Ephebopus genus- TOTALLY underrated, best genus ever. Super chill spiders and very visible in my experience (that is, if you go in with a red flashlight at night, they will be hanging out of their burrows). Absolutely beautiful from slings to adults, I have E. murinus, cyanognathus, uatuman, and rufescens and they're all awesome hunters, I've never been kicked at, and they are just all around great spiders. I was SO excited when you got all those slings!!! 2. Sericopelma sp. Santa Catalina- saw my first barrel roll the other night, I dropped in a cricket I thought was too large and before I could fish it out she shot out from under the plant and jumped on it, wrestled it down, and ended up on her back. I *love* this spider! I cannot wait to see what colours it picks up! Beautiful sling too, another spider that is beautiful as slings and adults! 3. Typhochlaena seladonia + Typhochlaena genus- What can I say, they are beautiful and super unique. They're also apparently very gentle with the males which makes sense given how small their sacs are. The trapdoor behaviour is just so cool and unique and of course they are STUNNING! 4. Megaphobema robustum- beautiful spider, gives you the look of a Brachy x Phormictopus without the Brachy growth rate. In my experience they pick up the adult colours super early on, which is awesome. 5. Acanthoscurria geniculata + Acanthoscurria genus- Wow I love Acanthoscurria so much, they have some extremely beautiful species! Tom Patterson has a few and I almost placed an order but working on limiting the BIG t's til I clear out some of these males... 6. Nhandu tripepii + Nhandu genus- I don't yet have a tripepii but it's top of my wishlist right now. I just love the story about your chromatus beheading crickets, and having heard you and many others describe this genus as "kooky" or "whacky" I figured I had to grab them up! 7. Psalmopoeus irminia- Beautiful spider, mine is super weird and likes to lounge on her back in a plastic flower, yes she has done this on multiple occasions. I love Psalmos, this one could also be victori, they are both gorgeous! 8. Thrixopelma ockerti + Thrixopelma genus- Just picked up a T. ockerti and I already love it despite it hairing me every time I go in to do maintenance, lol. I am absolutely loving it, incredible hunter, super unique look as a sling, really beautiful colouration and patterning. 9. Agnostopelma tota and Tmesiphantes obesus- barely in the hobby, I think Joe Rossi had them a while back (A. tota) and I don't think T. obesus is in the hobby at all, but they are SO CUTE and SO ROUND I just cannot NOT love them! Dude they are SO ROUND. I suggest the name Agnostopelma nickiminiaji (with love to Nicki your A. chalcodes) 10. Antikuna sp.- these are very new to the hobby I think they have a few of them in Europe though. Check out Antikuna cyanofemur and Antikuna valladaresi, they are absolutely amazing! All I really know is that they are from high altitudes in South America, but I am hoping we will start to establish them over here! Already had to come back and edit this cause I realised I forgot my Tliltocatl verdezi! She is an ABSOLUTE sweetheart and she's definitely a pet rock but for some reason I'm particularly enamoured with her even though I usually prefer fossorials or arboreals. My boss received her as a freebie with a P. metallica and he didn't want her so he gave her to me and she was still a tiny brown sling, he didn't remember what she was so I just took it and did my best. Since then, she's grown up into a beautiful fluffy female, and sometimes it's like "hey girl I was rejected a lot too don't worry" she's just such a beautiful specimen. I have her in a beautiful front opening enclosure with lighting and (hopefully soon) a pothos. Love that girl so much, she's basically my version of "The Queen" Awesome video Tom, keep up the awesome work! - Charlotte
Again, I can't argue with any of these (and I love your descriptions again!). Obviously, this list has changed a bit over the years, and it will probably change the next time I do one. haha Honestly, I really do love them all!
TBH, I wouldn’t mind watching a top 50 video. Even if the video turned out to be an hour long, some species really need more spotlight and information(based off experience) on these magnificent creatures.
You forgot Grammostola Pulchra!!! I just got into the hobby myself. I got 3 slings from Fear Not - G Pulchra (quirogai), and then later picked up a Caribena Versicolor and Aphonopelma Mooreae.
All are such beautiful Ts😍 my favorite would be E. Murinus aka skeleton tarantula. The transformation they go through from sling to adult is gorgeous they are just flat out gorgeous. But so are SOOO many Ts.
Praise the sun bro. Love the vids man. Just started getting into the hobby myself and am literally binge watching all your videos. Keep up the great work brother.
Great vid as always Tom! You inspire me to expand my collection every day:)) I also started out as an arachnophobe...still working on completely getting over it haha. Keep up the great work!
Such a incredible tarantulas. I love this video. I know how hard this video must have been to do. I always feel like a learn something every time I watch your videos. Differently several going on my list. Thank you for doing this video.
Nice Motionless in White hoodie you got there Tom. Good to see a fellow fan. Also I want to tell you I've noticed you try hard to respond to everybody that comments on your videos and I just want to tell you how cool it is , actually getting to interact with a content creator such as yourself. I mean i'm from South Africa and I'm talking to you all the way over in North America. Feels great.
Thanks so much, Heinrich! Just saw them in concert again in April. It was small indoor venue, which was sweet. They're great live. And I love interacting with folks, especially from other countries. That's the coolest part of this for me personally. It makes the world seem SO much smaller (and well connected!). Thanks again, bud!
agreed. I have an A. Geniculata now, and I am getting a C. Cyaneopubesceans sling soon. I love both species. (still need to get a P. Metallica sling too)
I KNEW that P. sp. green femur would be your #1! 😊😊 They're fantastic T's, aren't they? Thank you so much for posting this video today. It was just what I needed to make my Saturday brighter.
Oh yes the GBB a definite contender! I currently have 1 as a sling just passing the 1inch mark...1 of the more striking in colour even as a sling. Great little webbers they are 😆
Was surprised to see that Euathlus parvulus didn't make an appearance! I know you've expressed a lot of love for the species ;) My condolences about your female, by the way. I recently picked one up from Anastasia at the show in White Plains (I'd seen her at the previous show and was really regretting missing out on her--I emailed Anastasia afterwards and then a month later she got back to me saying she still had her but had packed he away in the "soon to molt" area of her T room! So I picked her up the next day 😁). Thank you for introducing me to the beauty of the species, by the way. Very underrated. I'm totally in love with my little Lillian already, and I probably never would have picked her up if not for your videos and blog posts!
I actually wanted to add her, but mine died earlier this year, and I got bummed out working with the old footage of her. I definitely need to get another, as it is an AMAZING species. Crud..I should have had it on the list anyway. haha And congrats on getting one! I was actually eyeing one of Anastasia's myself! I agree that they are terribly underrated...and hard to find!
Totally understandable (I'm sorry for bringing it up, honestly. I haven't experienced any deaths yet, and fingers crossed that doesn't happen for a long time). And thank you! I hope you're able to get another soon. :)
So happy to see another faves vid! I love the G. pulchripes, B. albopilosum, B. vagans, and B. auratum. And Euathlus sp. red, of which I have two teeny slings. I don't know if I could pick a favorite, either! Now after watching this, I think my next T will be N. tripepei. . . I have a thing for fluffy Ts.
Hello, Amber! All fantastic tarantulas! My B. auratum is still small, but as she puts on some size (and those gorgeous colors!) she'll be on the list. These are so difficult to do because I really do love them all! Ant eh tipepii are SO cute and fluffy. Thanks!!!
B. hamorii and T. stirmi are currently my first two (and only) Ts that I own and once I move out of the house (I'm only 15 now) I'll be expanding the collection starting with the Phormictopus sp. "Green Femur", such a beautiful T even with or without the green. Well done Tom!
Hello, Ted! Those are great species. :) Yeah, I wasn't allowed to have any when I lived at home, so I bought my first tarantula as soon as Billie and I moved out together. haha Thank so much! :)
Great list, although it’s likely completely changed since you posted lol. I love the ease of maintenance of some of the terrestrial New Worlds and over the years have begun to focus more on them-especially Brachypelma, Grammostola, and Aphonopelma. I guess my number one would possibly be Brachypelma klaasi. Love B. schroederi also. And you can’t go wrong with Grammostola pulchra. Yep, Theraphosa stirmi rates high. I’m raising a Homoeomma chilensis sling and can’t wait for adult coloring. I know I’ll love it too. Again, great list, Tom!
I watched this again the other day, and my list has TOTALLY changed by now. hahaha. I might have to revisit this one and make it a top 15. lol You mention some awesome ones there! I honestly love everything I keep, and I have a TERRIBLE time choosing favorites. :) Thanks, William!
Tom Moran thanks. Lol I’ve switched B. hamorii to top if for no other reason than it’s the hobby icon. I’ve got a female I purchased as a sling back in 2000. So now she’s tops lol.
Almost like a christmas spider! lol. I like watching your videos and also the guides on UA-cam and on your website so much. They are so educative and I really appreciate that you share so much knowledge with us. I´d give you tons of thumbs up and subscriptions if I only could. Please keep doing what you doing! I know you can´t buy something from it, but you are the reason why I feel educated enough to get my very own Tarantula pet. Hopefully this channel is growing a lot more because in my opinion you really deserve it!
Its the Christmas ornament spider! hahahah. Thanks so much, Ice Cold! Videos like this are a ton of fun to do (although I'm kicking myself because I forgot the GBB!). And thank you so much for the kind words! I do the website and the blog because I remember how difficult it was to get good information or a friendly voice to answer questions. Your comments have made my week! :) THANKS!
Well, Joyce...the GBB was SUPPOSED to be on the list, but I somehow screwed up and left it off. I had shot videos for 15 species, and I was working with them all as I put together the order. Somehow, I left it off. I'm so upset. These lists KILL me!
Tom be NOT upset. I cannot help loving them. Turquoise carapace, bright blue legs and burnt orange rump. Very leggy and faster then wind. What more can you ask for in a T. I thought maybe because it was so common that it was not on the list. Hey that first one you showed #10, had some patches of white on her rump. Is that normal?
I'm going to have to do a follow up video where I address this. I LOVE the GBB. I agree with you completely. :) I'll have to go back and watch it. It was probably vermiculite?
Beautiful! I agree it's an amazing experience, touching a tarantula for the first time when you're an arachnophobe! I had my first experience a few weeks ago with a very sweet Brachypelma Albopilosum in the pet shop. I didn't get to hold her, she declined my offered hand but she was a beautiful girl, surprisingly soft and very gentle! I'm seriously considering getting one, but learning as much as I can first so I get it right!
It really is a profound experience. I don't hold often at all, but the first time I held one was a huge step for me. So glad that you had a great experience with yours! :)
Awesome vid Tom!!! Watching your video's pushed me into the hobby my self and i just received my 1st two slings this week. Glad to see your adult Hamorii on this list. It makes me eager for the day mine is that size. Thanks for all your information :)
Thanks to you and @TheDarkDen I've overcome my fear of spiders enough to get one. B. Vagans, an absolutely adorable female who is slowly winning the hearts & minds of my co-workers. A few of them are scared of spiders as well and they love having her around. I've had Rattlesnakes, etc but never considered T's until coming across you channel and his. Now I feel like I had been missing out on something amazing :) Keep up the amazing work! Cheers from Colorado!
This just made my day. I got my first tarantula back int he 90s in part to help me get over my fear of spiders (I still have her, too! :) ) That is absolutely fantastic about your B. vagans...congratulations!!! And I also LOVE that you're using her to change the minds of others. That's just awesome. Thanks SO MUCH for sharing and welcome to the hobby! - Tom
I'm really excited to watch her grow (right now shes about 2 in) Two quick questions if you've got the time, we are keeping her at my office and during the week the temperature is pretty consistent (around 70-72) but on the weekends they turn the heat down (around 60), what would you recommend I try to keep things warmer for her? She has burrowed and seems to be doing well, I just want to be proactive and make sure shes comfortable on Saturday and Sunday when we aren't here. Question 2, is that Solaire on your shirt? #PraisetheSun
HI, Joseph! Is there a warmer corner you could keep her in? You COULD mount a heat mat on the wall, and position the enclosure so that it's not too close to heat. You'll just want to keep the edge of and make sure it doesn't get too warm. Temps that low shouldn't harm it, but it's not really ideal. Praise the sun! hahahaha Yes, it sure is! :)
She's in the warmest spot on my desk, I think I will try a really small heating pad and see how that goes. I'm glad to hear that 60 degrees won't harm her, but at the same time, if I can make things more ideal for her I will certainly try. Will keep you posted, and thanks for all the insight! Its been invaluable.
I'd have to say my all time favorite NW would be the P. Irminia. Seeing as I have five of them in my own small collection. I do want a cambridgie though, I like that olive green. But I can never get over seeing my big beautiful irminia with her bright orange lightning bolt on her legs and the tiger stripes all on a Stark black body. Plus mine will literally jump at her prey haha. Great list tom! Honestly I think I'd be just as bad on deciding which ones would be on the list lol.
The P. irminia is an absolutely GORGEOUS species, so I love your choice. I actually tried to get footage of mine for this video, but she wouldn't come out! haha She's still a bit shy. :) Thanks so much, bud! Yeah, this was a HUGE undertaking for me, as I like them all. I kept changing my mind as I was editing the video. lol
The big new world terrestrials have always fascinated me. For my money there's nothing like a big theraphosa. The huge carapace looks so cool. I'd have to go t. Stirmi for #1 all the way. And they look like they're covered in velvet. Just the coolest
P. Cambridgei is also one of my favorite Arboreal species. (Had a few Aviucularias and Poecilotherias as well, but I liked it more) My female was pretty calm, non-aggressive , but sometimes she would teleport for 20 cms. If spooked they are very skittish and incredibly fast. The green and the orange from the feet are amazing once they grow.
Well, somehow I ended up here. I don’t know a thing about tarantulas. You made this so interesting and I think it must be very cool raising these gorgeous creatures. Cong!
Tom Moran You’re welcome. I don’t mind spiders and try to take them outside if they come in. The little iridescent “jumping spiders” look so mischievous. They make me laugh.
Such a great list. There's so many great Ts. I'd have added A. chalcodes just because they're so calm and happy to be out exploring. But I haven't kept that many and my list would still change weekly,
They are quite the gorgeous tarantula and one that SHOULD have been on this list. I had the video shot and everything, and I forgot to include it like a dolt. haha
Agree with your list, many of those are myfavourite too. Very hard to make those kinds of lists. But i must include Ephebopus murinus on my top 5 NW. Fantastic spider, that reminds me of an OW in temperament and lifestyle, besidesthey are amazing looking!
This list would likely be very different if I did it again. haha I torture myself over these types of list. haha I have to get another E. murinus...my last one was male.
Don't know how you put this together. You're very brave I must say LOL. Personally I love Pinktoes. They have a soft spot in my heart as it is how I began to take the hobby seriously. :)
Well, Ethan...after getting it all done and posted, I realized that I forgot one of my favorite spiders, the GBB. UGH hahahaha This list technically isn't even accurate now. lol Pinktoes are adorable, and I had the P. metallica on the list at one point. There are just so many cool species!
Hi Tom. I know!! I'm sitting here looking at my 73 t's and I can't. Good job though on it. They are all gorgeous. There are a few in your top ten I have yet to get and look forward to adding them to my collection
you're the guy who does Tom's big spiders information web pages on the internet, oh my gosh thank you so much, I've learned so much from you, you're one of the guys that helped me get into the trantula Hobby, my number one favorite new world Tarantula is definitely the theraphosa stirmi, I just bought a wild-caught one and it is such a ferocious eater. I think I'm going to start buying wild-caught ones from now on because they're so much more Wilder and healthier it seems like.
Sorry for the delay, Sally! Yup, that's me. :) Thanks so much for the very kind words. I LOVE the T. stirmi....that is one of my favorite species. I honestly wish they would stop selling the wild caught adults in the hobby. I could tell you so many horror stories about how horribly treated they are, and how many of them die due to terrible care in the pet stores. I would encourage you to pick up a couple slings next. I've grown several up, and it's amazing to watch.
Would have put the Phormictopus Auratus and the Brachypelma Auratum on here as well:D The ybyrapora Diversipes is also a gem that would have deserved a spot on here
I just took the plunge into old worlds not intentionally it was a mystery box on sale fear not sent me all the most feisty species but my gbb, chaco, and P.irmina are some of my favorite new worlds I have half new world half old world now lol. OBT, cobalt blue, and Namibia horned baboon are my old worlds love spiders now though they are fun to watch and easy to keep.
My two favorite brachypelma species are boehmei and auratum. If you don’t think they’re gorgeous beginner species, you’re crazy. Boehmeis seem to kick hair and ask questions later but they’re the most beautiful colored brachypelma species imo
That's an great list Tom, I think I agree on a lot of them, though I myself like the Cancerides the ost in the phormictopus genus haha and I would have to squeez in Davus pentaloris somewhere (probably for the b. cabocla but only since I havent been able to find one here in the netherlands. and you are right about the Theraphosa they arent hard to take care of, I have a Blondi that I got as a first instar and she is about 3`3,5 inch now she is a bit skittish but she already calmed down some after her last molt. great video, like it! (hope you can understand everything I wrote, probably made lots of spelling mistakes haha)
Thanks so much! I screwed up and forgot the GBB, so I'll probably have to try this again down the road. haha. Speaking of Davus pentaloris, check out the next video I post (later tonight). You're not the only one who loves them... :) The B. caboclas are awesome. Such cool spiders. Yeah, the Theraphosa have a bad reputation for being difficult to care for, but I don't think they are that bad! Thanks so much! Your spelling was fine! :)
haha, you are finally getting one? awesome! could you please check out my latest feeding vid and give me sme feedback? would be much appreciated :D and thanks for the remark on my spelling
I love watching these videos of what species and genus are people's favourites, I'd like to see the videos of people's least favourites. weather its from bad experience with them or their pure aggression or just plain simple do nothing T' s.
Thanks so much, Callum! These list are TOUGH to make. hahaha. Personally, I'd have a difficult time doing my least favorites. I've kept over 90 species, and I haven't found one yet that I didn't like. hahaha
Excellent list! Speaking of dwarf sp., do you ever come by Paraphysa sp.? I used to own a few back in the day, "Chilean Copper" etc... but they seem to have vanished from the trade. And again nice hoodie! I will see them live 10/30 here in VA.
I passed on a chilean copper a few years back, and I've regretted it ever since. You're right, they are awesome and you never see them. Ha! Thanks so much! We saw them back in April in a smaller club. Awesome band!
Also funny you mention leggy Grammastola because i didn’t pick up on my Pulcra or Pulchripes premolt but my Roses has a butt like a tick! She’s practically waddling and extremely shiny. I’m predicting molt incoming.
@@TomsBigSpiders I completely fell in love with my girl Gwen. She is so chill and docile, never kicks hairs and will even walk right onto my hand while I'm straightening her enclosure, has a great feeding response, and I don't have to worry too much about humidity because they come from both humid and dry areas of the US. It seems like she's almost always out in the open and I love watching her explore her enclosure every night!
Great video as always. I also go back & forth with trying to pick favourites. I hope you can make a video in the future of the Phormictopus genus. I recently bought 2 i think they are auratus but were sold as platus witch is bogus according to arachnoboards. They are feeding machines & always out in the open. They are about 2-2 1/4". Love them. If i can get more Phormictopus sp. I most definitely will. Take care buddy. 🤗🕷🕸🇸🇪
I was really concerned there when you didn't mention any Phormictopus for so long, lol Also for me any list would have to include G. pulchra (so pretty!), A. geniculata (I like the look of the black carapace more than the bright one of N. chromatus) and P. irminia (just so elegant, not even pokies can beat that). Oh, and AWESOME SHIRT! Praise the sun! \[T]/
Hahahaha. You knew they were coming! :) All three of the ones you mentioned were on my list at one point, and I actually tried to get footage of my P. irminia, but she wouldn't come out. haha HA! Another sunbro? :) I was dying to see who would get the T-shirt. Thanks so much, bud!
Great list, Tom! But, why, oh, why, isn't Aphonopelma chalcodes on this list??? I can't overstate how underrated they are. Actually ALL Aphonopelma are. LOL,
@@TomsBigSpiders here's one for you. The one on the right now has the genus of the one on the left. And they are just chilling right next to each other in peace. How does that work?
I agree it's almost impossible to list them in order but I have to say mine is my A Variegata just because of the size/hair/colour and it was my first ever sling and a labour of love (as they all are). Great list! I love Phormictopus as you know (in fact I blame you and Daves Scott). Interestingly my Atrichomatus has just turned bitey. The others are ok (well the Cancerides has always been a bit flighty and I have to watch where i drop the prey and the tongs etc. Attacks water droplets the silly sausage).
This was just too difficult to do. I know folks like the lists, but they kick my butt. hahaha. I have to check out the A. variagata. What size is your atrichomatus? Mine are about 5" or so now, and they're still pretty calm. They were quite skittish early on, though!
I didn't know you used to be an arachnophobe. Pretty cool to see you go from being afraid of spiders to running one of the best T info sites and having this huge collection. I would say my spider fear has gotten better since I've been obsessed with researching Ts, but it's kind of inspiring for people like me to know that you can overcome the fear to the point of owning a crapload of old worlds. I am smittin with your P Antinous, would you rate them as an ok beginner's species?
BIG time, and I grew up on a farm and did landscaping for a few years, so I was always around spiders. I NEVER killed them, and even as a kid I used to cup them an put them outside. I was terrified of them, but fascinated at the same time. It took years, but I have no irrational fear of them anymore. :) That's a tough call. When mine was smaller, she was quite skittish, but she's calmed down a bit as an adult (you can see how well she just sits there). Pros are they are pretty hardy, VERY fast growing, eat well, and are gorgeous. Cons would be they need a bit of moisture (water dish and moisten part of the sub), they can be skittish, and they get quite large. If you're informed and have some experience, you would probably be okay with them. :) Thanks! Tom
Great videos Tom. I’m brand new to the hobby. Really looking and researching to get a T. One question. I have a dog and two cats. Do you think if I put a T in living room it will not be stressed or should it be in its own room? Wanna do what’s best for it. How are they around other pets? Thanks so much. Keep the info coming. Best Craig
Hi, Craig! I have four dogs and four kids, so there is a LOT of traffic in my house (even in the tarantula room). They don't seem to mind at all. I would just make sure that they are secure so that the cats don't knock the cages over. I have heard many instances where that happens. Hope that helps...and thanks! Tom
I got a Brachiopelma boehmei a while ago. She did kick hairs and run for the first month or so, now when i pick her enclosure up she slowly emerges and sits there while i talk to her and tell her i love her. I think any T can have a good personality. I also have a wild caught aphonapelma hentzi and a chromatopelma cyaneopubescens now. This is a hobby where 1+1=11 lol
My favourite is the Paraph...Euathlus parvulus ^^ or at least it would be but I got sent a scrofa instead when I ordered one 2 years ago so my fav is Pa..Phrixotrichus scrofa instead XD have had A. avic, C. fasciatum, N. chromatus, P. cambridgei, A. seemani, C. cyaneopubescens, red clawed scorpion, vinegaroons, millipedes. Vinegaroons are awesome too and the Cyclo... Davus fasciatus was pretty cute too but was starting to get a bit feisty before I gave her and most of the others away
I have 3 1" sling,a chaco, vagans, and auratum..and a fire legg that died out of age..that was my first tarantula..but I put him in glass container and poured gin to preserve so I can still see my very first one..
Your T's are just breath taking. I am an arachnophobic however just recently my grandson talked me into catching a wolf spider and setting up an enclosure for it. I have enjoyed caring for the spider. It molted a couple weeks ago and that was awesome to see. My fear of spiders is still there but not as strong as before. I don't ever see myself handling any spider. I am thinking about getting a tarantula. I really like the pumpkin patch T. Is this a good T to start out with?
Thanks, Kathie! I started out as an arachnophobe as well, so I definitely understand where you are coming from. :) Starting with a small wolf spider is a great place to start. They aren't as imposing, and you'll get to experience some of the fascinating facets of the hobby, like feeding and molting. The pumpkin patches can be a little fast and skittish, but you would probably find the behaviors similar to those of your wolf spider. I currently have 8 of them (two adult females I raised from babies, and 6 spiderlings from a recent breeding I did), and they are among one of my favorite species.
@@TomsBigSpiders Ohh my, I had had a little alcohol when I wrote that, I was totally just giving you a hard time! No honest hard feelings here LOL Take care man, love your channel!
@@andrewdeas1 Oh, man...I wasn't trying to be snarky. I truly HATE these lists. hahaha. I never agree with my own lists 5 minutes later. haha I have a TERRIBLE time picking just a few. We're totally good. hahaha
@@TomsBigSpiders Ohh I totally understand, I can't even imagine trying to pick 10 when you've owned as many species as you have. I have a TREMENDOUS amount of respect for you and felt TERRIBLE that that comment seemed serious when I didn't mean it as such at all. Anyways, much love man.
Well, that's embarrassing! The C. cyaneopubescens was absolutely supposed to be on the list. I shot the video, had it edited, and somehow left it off the list. UGHHHHHHHHHH I don't know how the heck I managed to leave it off. I actually just had to rewatch the video because I thought it was on there! Yes, they are amazing, and it should have been in my top 5.
Is it too late to reply? I'm kind of new to the hobby, but I have 7 already. I think my favorite is B.albicept. They look like little cute dogs! I have one but it's only 0.5 inch, so I guess it'll be a couple more years before those colors show up :(
It's never too late to reply! :) I still have to get a B. albiceps. The one I thought I had grew up and was apparently sold to me as the wrong species. Thanks for commenting!
Well, if it was my favorite all time tarantula, it would HAVE been my rose hair. I've had my girl for 23 years (and she was a sub adult when I got her) so she probably over 30. Mines a sweetheart and the one that got me into the hobby. :)
@@TomsBigSpiders awesome, yeah I've heard it's a 50/50 on temperament and even the docile ones can have bad days lol. The ch red in getting will probably be the only one I'll have......... Unless my gf gets over her fear of spiders and falls in love with her. 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾
I have a Eupalaestrus weijenbrighi, a Acanthoscurria Geniculata, Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, Tlilcatl albolosus, a Lasiodora parahybana and I'm still looking for other tarantulas to add
Ugh. If you say so ... Maybe it's familiarity, but your Top Beginner's Species picks strikes me as closer to my preferences. Guess you should highlight the deltas more frequently. 😎
Hey, Allen! As I tried to explain, these are just my personal preferences and not the "best". I'm not telling anyone they should like these, as I'm assuming that everyone has different species that they like. Truth be told, I'm always reluctant to do these list as some folks always take exception when their favorite species doesn't make it. :) Thanks!!!
Tom, of course, of course. Please feature the unfamiliar "deltas" -- those shown here but not featured in other high-viewership videos, as "special highlights". Thanks!
So, I'm currently considering getting my first tarantula and been scouring the internet (youtube in particular) for information and I get how hard it must be to discriminate between all these wonderful creatures. From all the information I've gathered I've been able to narrow my favorite down to the genus Brachypelma as they seem to have it all (personality, looks, availability, and are easy to keep) but I do love that orange color so my primary candidates are b.auratum, b. hamorii, b. boehmei, and that's how far I've managed to get.
So sorry for the late reply! You'll do well if you start with Brachypelma. They are GORGEOUS spiders, and the majority of them make for great beginners. Just know that the B. auratum can be a little more skittish than some of the others.
I had the video for the GBB shot and ready to go...and somehow I didn't put it in. DUMB! L. polycuspalutus was on the short list! :) Sounds like your list is going to be awesome. :)
Man I really appreciate Toms love for this hobby, it is encouraging.
Thank you so much!
I just want all of the Brachys
Hahaha. Me, too!
Extrovert Invert you and me both lol
I really love the red-leg brachys, myself
Me too! Love them❤️
Me to I got b bohmie so far avic avic ,avic matllica
I love this channel soo much and never run out of content where I've watched some videos 10X over before I've even watched them all.
I truly appreciate that...seriously. I actually have an update to this video planned for early summer. I finally got footage of the last species that I wanted to include.
That t-shirt is makes me want to praise the sun \[T]/
WHOOHOOO! Hahaha! I love it! I'm not just a tarantula hobbyist; I'm a sunbro, too. :)
The best combination
Hahahaha Thanks again!
My Aphonopelma chalcodes is named Manteater Mildred :)
The age of dark is upon us and the Darkwraiths will rise up and inherit the world
Filling the void for "Giant spider" with my L. carpenteri and O. violaceopes :) They won't hair me 😂
Here is my list, the first 3 are in order and everything after that is kinda wibbly wobbly.
I suggest the name Agnostopelma nickiminiaji (with love to Nicki your A. chalcodes)
Love that girl so much, she's basically my version of "The Queen"
Awesome video Tom, keep up the awesome work!
You know, I was just thinking about revisiting this topic in some shape or form. Hmmmmm... I just might. :)
@@TomsBigSpiders Ooh, I'd totally enjoy that!
@@TomsBigSpiders Please do!
You forgot Grammostola Pulchra!!!
I just got into the hobby myself. I got 3 slings from Fear Not - G Pulchra (quirogai), and then later picked up a Caribena Versicolor and Aphonopelma Mooreae.
Hi, Michael! Yeah, that's why these list drive me nuts. haha And congrats on your new additions!
#4 is like a spider dog the way you threw that cricket and it caught it lol omg perfect
Hahahahahaha. It is! haha
Such a solid video. I adore your videos! Evergreen content ❤
Thank you so very much!
All are such beautiful Ts😍 my favorite would be E. Murinus aka skeleton tarantula. The transformation they go through from sling to adult is gorgeous they are just flat out gorgeous. But so are SOOO many Ts.
Thanks so much! Ahhhhh...another great species! UGH. There are really TOO many! haha
Praise the sun bro. Love the vids man. Just started getting into the hobby myself and am literally binge watching all your videos. Keep up the great work brother.
Bahahaha. Yes! And thanks so much! Hopefully, you're finding the info that you need. :)
Great vid as always Tom! You inspire me to expand my collection every day:)) I also started out as an arachnophobe...still working on completely getting over it haha. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! I'm a horrible enabler. haha It takes a little while to get over it, but you'll soon find that you have no fear of them at all. :)
I agree hamorii are a beautiful beginner. Their looks are what got me considering keeping a tarantula in the first place
Such an awesome species. I agree, Summer. :)
Such a incredible tarantulas. I love this video. I know how hard this video must have been to do. I always feel like a learn something every time I watch your videos. Differently several going on my list. Thank you for doing this video.
Thanks so much, bud! This was a lot of fun to do. :)
really good video tom. i think my # 1 um is B.vagans. i just love the coloring of the red and black.
Thanks so much, Tim! The B. vagans was on my shortlist for the same reason. These lists are SO difficult to make. haha
Hey Tom!!!!! Awesome vid as always!! Also first! Three of my favorite NW t's are GBB, A. geniculata, and C. versicolor. Amazing spiders.
agreed. I have an A. Geniculata now, and I am getting a C. Cyaneopubesceans sling soon. I love both species. (still need to get a P. Metallica sling too)
Hello! Thanks so much, bud! :)
I KNEW that P. sp. green femur would be your #1! 😊😊 They're fantastic T's, aren't they?
Thank you so much for posting this video today. It was just what I needed to make my Saturday brighter.
I just LOVE the look of that species. It was a difficult choice, but she really is one of my all-time favorites. Thanks so much, Jodi! :)
Fantastic list Tom. Glad you added the "runner up" portion! Way too tough to narrow them down to just 10 lol. Those P. Cambridgei are a gem for sure!
Thanks, Ian! Of course, I realize soon after posting that I forgot one of my favorites, the C. cyaneiopubescens! haha UGH
Oh yes the GBB a definite contender! I currently have 1 as a sling just passing the 1inch mark...1 of the more striking in colour even as a sling. Great little webbers they are 😆
Trinidad Olive Tarantula and Venezuelan Suntiger Tarantula are two of my favorites as well as the Salmon Pink Birdeater.
Can't argue with any of those!
Great video and yes it's hard to pick your best 10. What do you think about the Grammostola pulchra
Thank so much, Richard! It's incredibly hard to choose just 10. haha. I love the G. pulchra...I have two!
Was surprised to see that Euathlus parvulus didn't make an appearance! I know you've expressed a lot of love for the species ;)
My condolences about your female, by the way.
Crud..I should have had it on the list anyway. haha
And congrats on getting one!
Tom Moran No problem. Keep up the great work!
I also love my Chaco Gold Knees. I have 2. One is a digger. One just hangs out. Very cool T's.
Love those as well! :) Good thing, too, as I have four at the moment. haha
Praise the sun... Loving the T-shirt Tom...
Hahaha Yes! Thank you!
I'm up to 32 Ts now, and feeling a bit overwhelmed. I can't imagine having 150 and keeping track of everything! Nice list.
That'll be it for me for a while! hahaha. I'm lucky that I truly find it relaxing to work with them. Thanks, bud!!!
:) THANKS!
I have two Psalmopoeus cambridgei and I love them. My first is about 3 inches now and very docile. The second hides all the time.
They are such an underrated species. I think that it's because they are so common. By girl is just gorgeous and so laid back. Thanks for chiming in!!
My fave as you know is the GBB. Some don't love them because they hair. But they are the prettiest of all the New World T's.
I'll have to go back and watch it. It was probably vermiculite?
Joyce Joseph im raising a gbb sling now they are a great new world tarantula👍
I Love the way they look when they are adults. When slings you would not know they will be so beautiful. Hope yours is a female and healthy.
My top ones in my collection.. is my versicolor, n. Chromatis, Rosie and my PZB...same here I started because I had Arachniphobia...
Dont mind spelling... you get what I meant..
B. SMITHI 😍
It's a great way to get over Arachnophobia!
And all are great choices. My G. poteri (rose hair) that I've had for 22 years is my all time favorite. :)
PeartSkirt And Spunky you are Beautiful.
PeartSkirt And Spunky yepp.
Awesome vid Tom!!! Watching your video's pushed me into the hobby my self and i just received my 1st two slings this week. Glad to see your adult Hamorii on this list. It makes me eager for the day mine is that size. Thanks for all your information :)
Thanks so much, Chris...that's awesome! :) Which slings did you get (sound like the B. hamorii is one?).
Tom Moran Yes a B hamorii and a B albop. Both right around 3/4 inch slings.
Hi, Ian! I LOVE my Theraphosa. I just can't get over the size. And you're spot on with the velvety appearance. Stunning!
P. Cambridgei is also one of my favorite Arboreal species. (Had a few Aviucularias and Poecilotherias as well, but I liked it more)
My female was pretty calm, non-aggressive , but sometimes she would teleport for 20 cms. If spooked they are very skittish and incredibly fast.
The green and the orange from the feet are amazing once they grow.
My favorite is stuck between the Brazilan Fiery Heiny and the Greenbottle Blue tarantulas. Both are so beautiful!!
They really are! Thanks for chiming in! :)
Well, somehow I ended up here. I don’t know a thing about tarantulas. You made this so interesting and I think it must be very cool raising these gorgeous creatures. Cong!
This just made my day...thank you!!!
Tom Moran You’re welcome. I don’t mind spiders and try to take them outside if they come in. The little iridescent “jumping spiders” look so mischievous. They make me laugh.
I was the same way before I got into the hobby. I have some jumping spiders. They are such smart little spiders! :)
man, you hit the bullseye with this intro . i still enjoy it lol.
Thanks, bud! I was actually pretty proud of that. LOL
I def have to say my favs are Caribena Versicolor, GBB, and Grammostola Pulchra
All great species! :)
😂
hey tom.. Very nice video, as usual keep them coming!
Thanks so much, Efer! :)
Such a great list. There's so many great Ts. I'd have added A. chalcodes just because they're so calm and happy to be out exploring. But I haven't kept that many and my list would still change weekly,
There are just so many....TOO many...cool species. I'm not even comfortable with this list any more. hahaha
My #1 fav tarantula is the Green Bottle Blue there just so beautiful.
I'm getting one soon!😻
They are quite the gorgeous tarantula and one that SHOULD have been on this list. I had the video shot and everything, and I forgot to include it like a dolt. haha
Agree with your list, many of those are myfavourite too. Very hard to make those kinds of lists. But i must include Ephebopus murinus on my top 5 NW. Fantastic spider, that reminds me of an OW in temperament and lifestyle, besidesthey are amazing looking!
This list would likely be very different if I did it again. haha I torture myself over these types of list. haha I have to get another E. murinus...my last one was male.
Your Antilles Pinktoe was robbed of the crown!😭
This was SOOOOO difficult to do, as I really don't have favorites. I already hate this list. hahaha
UGH hahahaha This list technically isn't even accurate now. lol
Pinktoes are adorable, and I had the P. metallica on the list at one point. There are just so many cool species!
Great video Tom, that "small as hell" versicolor i have just molted :)
Congratulations, Chris! That's awesome!
awesome video bro! think you should go for your favourite top 50 new world tarantulas! that would be really cool! I'm back in hospital with my son
I'm giving it thought...:)
Oh, no! How is he doing???
Love your Dark Souls shirt!
Praise the sun! Hey, check your private messages! :)
Gorgeous. I couldn't make a top 10 I commend you for this. I couldn't do it.
Hi, Christine! Well, I did it, but I'm not happy with it. haha. These are TOO hard!
Hi Tom. I know!! I'm sitting here looking at my 73 t's and I can't. Good job though on it. They are all gorgeous. There are a few in your top ten I have yet to get and look forward to adding them to my collection
I was hoping to turn some folks on to ones they haven't heard of. :)
Everyone has there favorite its usually the one that makes you most happy and less irritated
Yup, that's pretty much how it goes!

GREAT list! You have some awesome species on it! I find making these so difficult, as I love all of my guys. lol
you're the guy who does Tom's big spiders information web pages on the internet, oh my gosh thank you so much, I've learned so much from you, you're one of the guys that helped me get into the trantula Hobby, my number one favorite new world Tarantula is definitely the theraphosa stirmi, I just bought a wild-caught one and it is such a ferocious eater. I think I'm going to start buying wild-caught ones from now on because they're so much more Wilder and healthier it seems like.
Sorry for the delay, Sally! Yup, that's me. :)
Thanks so much for the very kind words.
Some beautiful Tarantulas there Tom you have a few I want your Stirmi looks gorgeous ☺
Thanks so much, Mark! I just wish I didn't forget the GBB. haha
Definitely helped me get first few species.
Thanks so much!
Another great video Tom.
Thanks, Robert!
Nhandu tripepii...(learned a new spider species)..gorgeous species. Your spider room looks awesome!
I love that girl. She should have made the real list. haha And thanks so much! I'll be doing a tour soon. :)
i like their old name more sounded so much more intimidating even though they look like a tangled clump of yarn
Never seen or heard of this species before...thats why I like this channel...always learning something
Love this list! There are a lot of species on here i hadnt even thought about. 😁
My 'want list' is growing....
Wow, I forgot about this one. haha Mine wish list is never ending. lol Thanks!
Would have put the Phormictopus Auratus and the Brachypelma Auratum on here as well:D The ybyrapora Diversipes is also a gem that would have deserved a spot on here
Yeah, it's interesting to hear what others would choose. That's the fun part of lists!
Yea I’m late to this one. My favorite NW’s
1. Chromatopelma Cyaneopubescens
2. Caribena Versicolor
3. Dolichothele Diamantinensis
4. Avicularia Purpurea
5. Avicularia Metallica
6. Davis Pentalori ( might have misspelled I’m lazy and don’t feel like looking 😂 )
7. Ephebopus Murinus
8. Nhandu Chromatus
9. Grammostola Pulchra
10. Grammostola Rosea
Great list! I certainly can't argue with that!
Tom Moran 😀 thanks my dude
I just took the plunge into old worlds not intentionally it was a mystery box on sale fear not sent me all the most feisty species but my gbb, chaco, and P.irmina are some of my favorite new worlds I have half new world half old world now lol. OBT, cobalt blue, and Namibia horned baboon are my old worlds love spiders now though they are fun to watch and easy to keep.
You have quite the collection going there, Josh. What a great group of species.
My two favorite brachypelma species are boehmei and auratum. If you don’t think they’re gorgeous beginner species, you’re crazy. Boehmeis seem to kick hair and ask questions later but they’re the most beautiful colored brachypelma species imo
I love my B. auratum...she is stunning.
haha, you are finally getting one? awesome!
could you please check out my latest feeding vid and give me sme feedback? would be much appreciated :D
and thanks for the remark on my spelling
One of my regular sources has a female N. tripepii for a good price and I've almost bought her twice. Love the list!
Buy that girl! hahaha. Seriously, there's nothing quite like them. :) Thanks!!!
Praise the sun! ...and the Ts :3 Thank you very much for this video. I will definitly pick up a Bumba Cabocla ASAP. They are gorgious!
YES! hahaha LOVE the B. cabocla...such a cool, unique little spider. Thanks!
I've kept over 90 species, and I haven't found one yet that I didn't like. hahaha
I try not to play favorites, but my Euthalus sp red is definitely my fave. She is a sweetheart.
That species is absolutely adorable. :)
Awesome mate as usual!
Thank you! :)
Also funny you mention leggy Grammastola because i didn’t pick up on my Pulcra or Pulchripes premolt but my Roses has a butt like a tick! She’s practically waddling and extremely shiny. I’m predicting molt incoming.
Hahaha. Yup, sounds like a molt is on the way! :)
My current favorite is A hentzi. Probably because she is my first and was a gift from my stepbrother.
That's awesome, Vixen! A. hentzi's are awesome spiders. :)
I have two of them right now, but they are still tiny! I can't wait until they start showing their adult colors.
I couldnt agree more! Great list!
Thanks, Jessica!
I was really concerned there when you didn't mention any Phormictopus for so long, lol
Also for me any list would have to include G. pulchra (so pretty!), A. geniculata (I like the look of the black carapace more than the bright one of N. chromatus) and P. irminia (just so elegant, not even pokies can beat that). Oh, and AWESOME SHIRT! Praise the sun! \[T]/
Hahahaha. You knew they were coming! :) All three of the ones you mentioned were on my list at one point, and I actually tried to get footage of my P. irminia, but she wouldn't come out. haha
HA! Another sunbro? :) I was dying to see who would get the T-shirt. Thanks so much, bud!
Hey bud! Nice video as always my friend
Thanks so much! These things are so hard! haha
Great list, Tom! But, why, oh, why, isn't Aphonopelma chalcodes on this list??? I can't overstate how underrated they are. Actually ALL Aphonopelma are. LOL,
I know! This list KILLED me to make, because there are just so many great tarantulas! I'm going to have to do a longer one next time... lol
Awesome, you have some Ts that I've never even heard of. Very nice. I'm a pleb as u can tell
Thanks so much! I try to find some obscure ones. Ha! Not at all! :)
@@TomsBigSpiders here's one for you. The one on the right now has the genus of the one on the left. And they are just chilling right next to each other in peace. How does that work?
Ahh i cant post pics. I'll send the youtube link.
@@TomsBigSpiders m.ua-cam.com/video/1JBelIzPPvs/v-deo.html
Its around 2 inches. Seems ok now was just pissed off. (fed it fine earlier). Good news my P cams is off the breeding! Hooray!!!
That's a tough call. :)
Thanks!
Tom
Thanks for the reply =)
Great videos Tom. I’m brand new to the hobby. Really looking and researching to get a T. One question. I have a dog and two cats. Do you think if I put a T in living room it will not be stressed or should it be in its own room? Wanna do what’s best for it. How are they around other pets? Thanks so much. Keep the info coming.
Best
Craig
Hi, Craig! I have four dogs and four kids, so there is a LOT of traffic in my house (even in the tarantula room). They don't seem to mind at all. I would just make sure that they are secure so that the cats don't knock the cages over. I have heard many instances where that happens. Hope that helps...and thanks!
Tom
Great video, but in very surprised you don't have the Brazilian Black on your top list.... Still, a very impressive and informative video.
It might be on it the next time. I honestly hate doing these lists because I can't narrow it down. haha
Hahaha It does indeed!
Hey Tom! Recently found your channel and just subbed because I wanted to let you know I think your content is great. Also praise it \[T]/
Hey, there! Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
My Euathulus parvulus unfortunately died, but I LOVE that species. I still need to get a scrofa...gorgeous animal. :O
I have 3 1" sling,a chaco, vagans, and auratum..and a fire legg that died out of age..that was my first tarantula..but I put him in glass container and poured gin to preserve so I can still see my very first one..
All great species there! And that's awesome. My first is still alive...I've had her 22 years. :)
My fav is Mexican tiger rump.A beautiful terrestrial species,it’s one of the most calmest T’s out there I’ve handle it before and dosent mind.
I definitely have to get one of those. :)
My favorite always be Arizona Blond, simply chill, shy and cute spider.
I love them, but unfortunately mine is crazy. haha
Praise the Tarantula
Bahahahaha! Heck, yes.
I am not gonna lie to you Tom, I am INSULTED that the G Iheringi is only #10, that deserves top 5 AT LEAST.
Dude, I've kept over 175 species, and I honestly love them all. I HATE doing these lists. haha
Hey Tom don't beat yourself up there are plenty of Ts it's hard to pick just one to place in the # 1 spot and great video
Thanks, Steve! This one killed me because I forgot the darned GBB! hahaha
Chromatopelma Cyaneopubescens isn't on your list? Love the way they web everything up!
Ahh well, shit happens :) But keep posting videos! Always looking forward to yours and The Dark Den's content!
I'm just going to go ahead and make a video making fun of the fact that I forgot it. And thanks so much!
I still have to get a B. albiceps. The one I thought I had grew up and was apparently sold to me as the wrong species. Thanks for commenting!
Thank you for not having a rose hair in your list lol. Mine was an ornery lady.
@@TomsBigSpiders
Wow, after 23 years and being your foundation T, she didn't even get a runners up spot !? 😣🕷️
I have a Eupalaestrus weijenbrighi, a Acanthoscurria Geniculata, Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, Tlilcatl albolosus, a Lasiodora parahybana and I'm still looking for other tarantulas to add
You've got some awesome ones there, Sofie!
Thanks!!!
Tom, of course, of course.
Please feature the unfamiliar "deltas" -- those shown here but not featured in other high-viewership videos, as "special highlights".
Thanks!
Will do, Allen!!!
@@TomsBigSpiders Thanks for the reply! I'll keep that in mind.
Maybe I will do a top ten new world video too. Great work, and I agree with most. I am.not a Theraphosa fan but do like watching them eat.
Do it! I'm still upset because I forgot the GBB (one of my favorites!). hahaha
Tom Moran
Yeah, I wondered about that and what about that L polycuspalatus? I am compiling a list now.
I had the video for the GBB shot and ready to go...and somehow I didn't put it in. DUMB! L. polycuspalutus was on the short list! :) Sounds like your list is going to be awesome. :)
Tom Moran Yeah a few things different and a few the same. I'll leave it there so you can be surprised some.
