Congratulations on the great analysis! I’m Brazilian, and Sepultura is a source of great pride for us. Currently, they are on their farewell tour with a different lineup, with Derrick Green on vocals. I recommend a reaction to "Guardians of Earth" from their most recent album Quadra, or "Agony of Defeat" from the same album, where Derrick sings the first part of the song with his natural voice. Speaking of this of vocal, I also recommend listening to Crypta, a Brazilian Death Metal band made up entirely of women, whose vocalist, Fernanda, frequently uses fry vocals. Check out the song "The Other Side of Anger"!

Sepultura is such a weird memory for me. Growing up in a catholic school I was trained to "fear" the nascent metal scene in the 80s, but my classmates, with a penchant for rebellion, would bring in tapes and discuss the bands. I got to know them as Metallica's antagonist in the "Loudness Wars". I think the first time I paid attention to them was because MTV was rotating heavily Roots Bloody Roots. I thought they were amazing but was aware just recently the Roots record was considered at least a nu-metal precursor. For my money, their best record is Arise, and their best song is Inquisition Symphony.

I'm so happy to see you react to this era of Sepultura. Roots is my favourite Sepultura album.
I saw them perform live only once (and it was after Max had left), in maybe 2005 or 2006. They were absolutely brutal : no messing about, they just walked onstage and tried to blow our faces off. It was brilliant.
Anyhow, there's some interesting etymology in their name. Obviously, it has its roots (bloody roots!) In Latin. "Sepultura" is related to the English word sepulchre; but it's also a word in English in its own right. It means "the ritual of interment", or, in other words, a graveside funeral. I try to use it as often as I can, but it's surprisingly difficult to work into everyday conversation . . .

@@tdv1973Funny to call Roots industrial, it’s quite the opposite, though I understand the parallel you’re drawing. For me Roots was the quintessential nu metal album. It and Korn’s Life is Peachy was in my mind for nu metal what Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks and The Clash’s self titled was to punk. All that came after rose in a way from those. ( and Limp B was the pop punk of nu metal)

The musicians spent time with the Xavantes because, among other things, they wanted the Xavante's permission to share their chants and art. One of the things their leaders pointed out were their perceived similarities with the band members: they, like the Xavantes, had art on their skin (tattoing and painting) and were often misjugded and mistrusted by people.

Took me a minute before I watched this. I've been a fan of Sepultura and Soulfly for so long. I didn't think anyone could properly analyse the vox. I need to sit down.

you cant explain a feeling. It is life what shaped his voice. Grown up like Max Cavalera made this men, this voice, this music. I am a old guy, 47 years. And i hear this album from start till today. In my opinion is no other album that sounds this aggressive. Unbeaten forever...

Não, essa versão "com Pavarotti" é apenas uma paródia feita por uma banda alemã chamada JBO.

The song "Ratamahatta" from this album still remains to this day one of their, if not actually their most popular song. The song "Lookaway" features guest vocalist Jonathan Davis (Korn).

It's because of this music video that I also own a Deftones Dickies shirt. Some guy was making high quality ones for cheap on eBay. Should've bought all the colors he had. $10 each! But pre-pandemic so now... I should see who the seller was and buy more than one this time.
I wish we could get an old school Deftones, Korn and Sepultura tour. Imagine. Nothing but old songs too! One can dream.
