The exact same feeling all those kids felt too back in ww1 😢 some boys were guilted into going by women giving them a white feather as an act of shame and called them cowards too for not being in the military.
But sadder too he’s based of the true story from a veteran. When lemmy wrote the song he watched a documentary. A veteran said he held his dying friend, both only 16, his friend was crying for his mother until he went quiet and cold

Welcome to Sabaton. This song was a cover of a Motorhead song, written by Lemmy Kilmister. For their originals, lead singer Joakim Broden and bassist Par Sundstrom are the primary songwriters. Formed in 1999, they are also the only original members. The current lineup includes guitarist Chris Rorland (joined 2012), drummer Hannes van Dahl (j. 2014), and guitarist Tommy Johansson (j. 2016). Yes, most songs are about Military History. Joakim doesn't have a huge vocal range, but he will use all that he has. Joakim will also tell you that Tommy is the best singer in the band, he does covers on his channel.
To try an original, check out any of the animated story videos: Night Witches, No Bullets Fly, Lady of the Dark, The Red Baron, and The First Soldier. And as we get closer to Christmas, the music video for "Christmas Truce".

Lemmy wrote "1916" after seeing a documentary on the battle of the Somme (Lemmy was a history buff). The song reflects a part of the documentary that affected him deeply; a veteran of the battle breaking down as he talked of holding his best friend as he died.

Welcome to the world of Sabaton. Hannes, the drummer, is married to Floor Jansen of Nightwish. I think you will enjoy all their videos but recommend that you check out 'Christmas Truce' next. It is based on the true story from 1914 when the 2 sides stopped fighting for a brief moment to meet in no-man's land to celebrate, exchanging gifts and playing football. A nice surprise awaits during the credits at the end. Great reaction to this video by the way. I know it's a bit early, but Seasons Greetings from Cardiff in not so sunny Wales. Take care.

Interesting fact their Drummer is married to Floor Jansen! “Hannes Van Dahl (born Karl-Hannes Dahl, 18 January 1990) is a Swedish musician. He is best known as the drummer of the power-metal band Sabaton.”
It’s an interesting song and depicts the horrors of war quite graphically, which is something Sabaton are good at. A great follow up to this would be Bismark, which is a story of how the mighty German battleship that was built to be supposedly unsinkable - they didn’t account for the British navy and airforce tenacity!
Great reaction, I really enjoyed it! 🌹
    RIP Lemmy, never forgotten 🥲

Finally! You got got round to Sabaton!!!! You sure decided to dive into the sad end of Sabaton though. The outro was played by Tina Guo on her Cello (she also played with them at Wacken 2019 .. The Swedish Pagans video of the song is online, as well as on the Steel Commanders music video)
If you want to go down the Sabaton rabbit-hole, I would recommend these:
(These are all from the Sabaton Channel, and they never block videos so it's safe to use)
[live at Woodstock 2012]: Ghost Division, 40:1 and Uprising
[Great Tour Live Videos]: En Livstied I Krig (make sure to turn subtitles on), Red Baron, Swedish Pagans, Primo Victoria, Fields of Verdun, Devil Dogs & Angels Calling
[Lyric videos]: Attack of the dead men, The Final Solution, In Flanders Fields, 82nd All the way, Sparta, Shiroyama, Cliffs Of Gallipolli and The lost Batallion
[Music Video's]: Bismarck, Christmas Truce, Steel Commanders, Defence of Moscow, Livgardet (make sure to turn subtitles on), Fields of Verdun, Rourke's Drift, Screaming Eagles, Uprising, The Future Of Warfare (Building Blocks Video) & Seven Pillars of wisdom
[Animated History Video's]: Night Witches and No Bullets Fly (not animated music video's, the animated history/story video's)
    [Covers]: Kingdom Come [Offical video]
and I'm sure people told you but in case, Sabaton have another channel (Sabaton History Channel) where they do a deep dive into the history behind the songs with Indy Nidell.

As a veteran of 3 wars and 21 years of service this song definitely brings a tear to my eyes.
We can never forget about our collective history we are all impacted by the decisions of our politicians who send us to fight.
We served to defend our countries and a soldier does not have a say in where we are sent. Most countries have an all volunteer military and if people didn’t join then we would have mandatory service. That is something that people should remember when they disrespect monuments and our veterans. Thank you to all my fellow veterans who have served in honor and defense of your country!🇺🇸

As people have mentioned, this is a cover of a Motörhead song. The two guys standing in the door opening at 6:03 are Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell, the drummer and the guitarist of Motörhead. The picture is of Lemmy Kilmister who was the bassist and singer of Motörhead and the guy holding it is Eddie Rocha who was the tour manager of Motörhead and the current one for Sabaton.

As others have already pointed out, this is not a Sabaton original. This is a cover of a Motorhead song, written by Lemmy Kilmister (RIP). That's why you see Phil and Mikkey of Motorhead in this video, carrying Lemmy's photo, as well as the Motorhead flag being displayed alongside the flags of other nations. This is, however, an excellent sampling of the musicianship of Sabaton, as well as their ability to not only bring history back to life, but to make it interesting enough for others to want to research further. They have their own separate UA-cam channel, "Sabaton History", which digs further into the material they select for their songs.
Also, much of the imagery in the "parade" scenes refers directly to other Sabaton songs. Examples are the woman in uniform emerging from the alley (Lady of the Dark), the formation of biplanes flying over near the end of the song (Night Witches), and the bomber that flies over with the biplanes (No Bullets Fly).
For another cinematic-level video, as others have recommended as well, see "Bismarck" and "Christmas Truce". And, as always, let them play out in their entirety...there are important messages, and sometimes easter eggs, revealed at some point after the song proper has ended. Some of them are buried in the end credits.

I love the representation in the video - the "British" forces included huge numbers of soldiers from throughout the Empire and World Indians - Sikhs, Hindu's, Muslims - Nepalese Gurkhas, Australian's,. New Zealanders, Caribbean. Nigerian, Kenyans, Ugandans and many others and their contribution and sacrifice is too often (deliberately) overlooked.

In my role I put on the uniform of those who fought in what was called the Great War. Young people who enlisted did not lie about their age. They came from town and country sides, they either worked in hard industry, pay was just enough to keep them alive. Birth certificates were not around to prove their age, they were looked at by the recruiting teams as fit for uniform. We at the museum when talking to young students mention this.

Excellent reaction. Sabaton videos tend to have high production values while their music highlights the sacrifices, honor, and humanity that arise from the cauldron of war. Interesting tidbit, Joakim never intended to be the lead vocalist as he joined the band as the keyboardist and has no vocal training or background. He had written several songs and the band asked him to sing them so they could understand the melodies. The band had no lead vocalist and asked him to fill in until they found one. As he puts it "They never did. lazy bastards."

Welcome to the world of Sabaton! They do some amazing and informative videos, but be warned, there are sometimes multiple versions. You will almost always want the "animated story video", because it includes extra history and human touches (like the second half of this video). Make sure it has the word "story" in the title, as some also have animated music videos which skip the extras. My favourites are _No_ _Bullets_ _Fly_ and _Night_ _Witches._ The exceptions to this rule are _Christmas_ _Truce_ - watch the music video as part of your Christmas lineup, it's the one that made me a Sabaton fan - and _Bismarck._ It really surprised me when I realised the music that made me cry most often was from a power metal band singing about war, but really they are usually singing about the human condition in the context of war - the compassion, bravery, ingenuity, and other qualities that come to the fore when put to the fire. Enjoy!

    • @elvwood
      @elvwood Рік тому

On a personal note, let me say that this song has extra weight because of family history. My wife's grandfather was _14_ years old when he went to the war, and he only survived through dumb luck. He was wounded and sent to a field hospital where his father was being treated too: he swore when he saw his son and wrote home to the boy's mother. She in turn wrote to the War Office with proof of his age, and they pulled him out. Once home, he never spoke of what he had been through.

  • @martin6181

The lyrics were written by Motörheads singer Lemmy Kilmister after he had seen a documentay, if you want to see more about the history behind the song you can look it up on their history channel, Sabaton History. Yes, they have their own history channel where they go through the historical facts behind their songs with a legitimate historian.
Sabaton's made the best Christmas song ever, it's called "Christmas Truce", you really ought to look it up. It's about the spontaneous truce between the brittish/french and the german soldiers at Christmas 1914 during WWI and it's a beautiful song.

The original, from Motörhead album 1916, is also very much worth listening. It's low key and emotional in a way you really did not expect from Motörhead.

"Friedrich Engels once said: "Bourgeois society stands at the crossroads, either transition to socialism or regression into barbarism." What does "regression into barbarism" mean to our lofty European civilization? Until now, we have all probably read and repeated these words thoughtlessly, without suspecting their fearsome seriousness. A look around us at this moment shows what the regression of bourgeois society into barbarism means. This world war is a regression into barbarism. The triumph of imperialism leads to the annihilation of civilization." Rosa Luxemburg

Welcome to Sabaton! As a history buff, I thought I knew a lot, but, I've learned from Sabaton. I like that Sabaton is "even handed." I've learned SO much abt Allies military history & contributions. As an American, I appreciate that they haven't left out the USAs military history & contributions. Keep going down the rabbit hole of interesting history & great music.

Tremendous reaction! This song is a cover of Motörhead's song, with heavy metal legend Lemmy in front (he's the guy in the framed picture that a member of the surviving band carries in the video). And that is why I love that you ended by saying "If you have any more Sabaton suggestions, Lemmy know!" You unintentionally paid tribute to him, the way they do in the video! Coincidence? I think so! 😄🤘🏼

I love seeing all the different soldiers walking with them. There are a few inclusions in there that a lot of people have forgotten about. For example you can see a soldier in a turban, he's a Sikh. India was still under British rule during the first world war and thousands of brave Sikhs and Indians fought and unfortunately died in Europe. They were just one of many groups of soldiers from European colonies that took up the call to arms. It truly was a world war.

if your looking for a "Christmas Song" then "Christmas Truce" is one to listen to. it's one of the most beautiful and yet most heartbreaking events in history. it was when, in the few days of christmas of 1914 (24-26), both sides of the western front laid down their guns in their entirety, came out of their trenches, and celebrated christmas together in "No Man's Land". they exchanged gifts of w/e they may have had such as ammo, cigarettes, medical supplies etc. etc. and spoke to each other however they could through broken words and body expression. sadly, by the 27th they were ordered back to battle and while the higher ups were willing to overlook the unofficial ceasefire, they were warned that if it happened again without prior approval there would be severe consequences. as such, never again did it happen through the rest of the war. unless you know a lot about the war, it is a forgotten event. there was 1 attempt when a German wished a merry christmas and waved a box of cigarettes but was immediately sniped and killed...and ironically enough it was by a Canadian. we were NOT nice back then. in fact, we were the most despised and ruthless soldiers by/towards the Germans and even changed the rules of war in terms of engagement and treatment of soldiers due to it.

Here's an interpretation of a small moment in the video. The woman in uniform stepping out of the dark alley. I'm not sure if it's intentional by Sabaton, wouldn't surprise me if it is. But, it symbolise how women in war are often relegated to the shadows and not talked about. But through their music Sabaton has given us incredible stories about brave women as well, like Milunka Savic and the Night witches.

I understand calling for your mother when you are slowly bleeding to death is a real phenomenon. As your brain gets gradually less and less oxygen you start devolving back to the very basic and rudimentary cognition.
And In WW1 going to the no mans land was suicidal during daytime, so it was a common occurrence that people in the trenches had to listen their friends call for help and die just tens of meter away, but unable to help them.
WW1 was pure insanity in so many different ways.

If you don't walk away from hearing this song for the first time, not feeling like you just took a good punch to the stomach, you're not human.
As previously stated by other comments, this song is a cover on a Motörhead song with the same name. I don't agree with the statements that the Motörhead song being many times better than this cover. They sound completely different so it's quite difficult to compare them. This one is more powerful, which tells the story in one way. Motörheads version is more somber and more... devastated, if that's a way to describe it. It has a much stronger sense of despair over it, which is a very good feeling to convey when it comes to the story of this song.
    Other songs by Sabaton.
Christmas is coming up, so Christmas Truce is a given. Also about events during WW1.
No bullets fly, the animated story version, as previously stated in other comments.
    The Final Solution
    The Last Stand
En livstid i krig, performed in swedish live from Gothenburg (translates to "A lifetime of war")
Angels Calling ft. Apocalyptica. If you're in to strings you'll love that one.

The lovely guitarist, Tommy Johansson has his own band, Majestica. Since Christmas is around the corner you could try there album, A Christmas carol, a metal Christmas story based on the book by Dickens about Ebenezer Scrooge 🎸🤘
My favorite song is Ghost of Christmas past.

While 1916 is a very upscaled cover of the Motörhead song by the same name, Sabatons song Christmas Truce is their own composition - taking place in 1914 - and is, if possible, even grander and more epic than this song. If you liked this youll be just as heart wrenched and stunned by that song and video. A true masterpiece.
Youll be going down the Sabaton rabbit hole, guaranteed, after seeing it.

Sabaton is excellent, they are a history teacher's dream - can you imagine kids insteads of reading books watching metal band SINGING about the events? Singing good? And by the way, there is personal ties to Nightwish - the drummer of Sabaton (Hannes van Dahl) is married to Floor Jansen, recently their 2nd daughter (Freya and younger Lucy) was born some 2 months ago...
Since it is the right time, i suggest you watch "Christmas Truce", excellent video going with that one...

Firstly welcome to Sabaton, you will love this band.
Sabaton is a Swedish band that sings music about battles and historical moments.
Two interesting facts: The guitarist's hairier name is Tommy Johansson, he has a boss called Majestica and he also has a UA-cam channel where he posts a new cover of a song every Friday (I highly recommend you check it out)
The second curiosity is about Sabaton's drummer, his name is Hannes Van Dahl, he is married to, nothing less, Floor Jansen, lead singer of Nightwish.
In this clip we have a cover of the song 1916 by the band Motorhead, narrating from a soldier's perspective what it was like to join the Battle of the Somme.
I strongly recommend that you always wait for the video to end, sometimes in the last seconds there will be a scene or even more details about the song.
