    Correction:
In this video, we conflate a hypothesis with a prediction. In science, a hypothesis is a tentative explanation for an observed phenomenon. It aims to answer: Why does something happen? A prediction, on the other hand, is a reasoned guess about what might happen if we test that hypothesis in an experiment.
To revisit our egg example, a true scientific hypothesis might be: "Eggshells inhibit pressure from being released from eggs." We might test that hypothesis by microwaving eggs both with and without shells to see if pressure from the heat gets trapped, leading to explosion. If our hypothesis is correct, we predict that the shelled egg will explode and the shell-less egg will not.
These two terms are often blended in textbooks, classrooms, and even at times by working scientists. But they are actually two separate, though closely linked, parts of the scientific process!

If you only learned one thing about science, this would be it. This is why we should respect science.
It also teaches critical thinking skills which is, well, critical for all persons living in a complex society where everything depends on science.

I'm putting together a list of Crash Course videos for my kids to watch next month.
In their elementary school, they don't quite learn everthing I got to when I was that young. Such as in 3rd grade, I learned about dna, rna, how to measure our weight and height, our blood pressure, heart rate, and we went to the StL Science Center for a field trip to do hands on learning. In 5th grade we learned about the scientific method. My kids elementary doesn't teach them til middle school. They learn more about animal science, such as habitats and their environmental needs to survive.
I wonder if elementary schools tweak their science lessons based on where they live in the US. Like do areas that are more rural with a lot of wildlife, could that be why they focus more on habitats?
I did my elementary learning in a city, not much wildlife compared to rural areas.
But I can, hopefully, just get some straight answers by asking our states education department.
I was curious why my oldest never got to partake in a district wide science fair in elementary school. They don't have them. 🤷‍♀️

    FINALLY
Ive always loved the idea of crash course, but had trouble connecting with most of the hosts. Even when it's been Hank it feels wierd seeing him in that setting cos I'm more used to off the cuff silly Hank.
You know what though. This guys delivery reminds me so much of the fellah who hosted crash course space. The only crash course that I've seen in completion, and it started my absolute obsession with all things to do with cosmology and beyond. If this guy can do that for biology I'm so here for it.
Also PS surely it's time to do crash course space part 2 😊 bring back that same guy too!!!

    Sonnet-To Science
    BY EDGAR ALLAN POE
Science! true daughter of Old Time thou art!
Who alterest all things with thy peering eyes.
Why preyest thou thus upon the poet’s heart,
Vulture, whose wings are dull realities?
How should he love thee? or how deem thee wise,
Who wouldst not leave him in his wandering
To seek for treasure in the jewelled skies,
Albeit he soared with an undaunted wing?
Hast thou not dragged Diana from her car,
And driven the Hamadryad from the wood
To seek a shelter in some happier star?
Hast thou not torn the Naiad from her flood,
The Elfin from the green grass, and from me
The summer dream beneath the tamarind tree?
