hot take, but I do believe that troll female models in alpha made... more sense stylistically? of course the textures were not appealing, but the direction of the model has been more to the point and had more resemblance with their male counterparts - huge, humpbacked and scary monsters. And it provided more of those vibes of some dangerous forest witches.
Overall, that model is an exact description of what an ideal woman should look like according to the deleted male troll joke: "dumpy and droopy with halitosis."
you probably perfer the bearded female dwarves too eh?
I think people actually just don't want ugly characters in mmos statistically speaking though I wish they kept it.
The graphics were actually pretty good on vanilla launch for its time, take it from a old man here
All you have to do is look at every other game released in 2004. San Andreas for example, literally the same cartoony graphics.
WoW was pretty realistic for it's time.
I also thought that statemnt was a bit strange 🤨
20 years later and you still want that when we can get UE5?
uuuum. Far Cry was released in 2004 cmon.
@@Metalyga Far Cry 1 is an exception look at everything else from around that time. And the reason they could achieve that look because you have many loading screens in Far Cry. WoW is open world without loading.
While being one of the worst expansions, WoD was clearly the biggest tech jump WoW has ever had.
The new updated character models and the new zones were incredible back in the days!
Oh yes, apart from the initial few days when you couldn't log or get passed the first garrison quest, discovering old draenor was pure delight
@@MarcelianOnline Yeah those were grim days 😂
And it was the most horrendous shift in art quality and style in all of history.

The vanilla/TBC gfx have always been my favorite. It felt like I was playing first person in all the wc3 maps that I went crazy for as a young kid
ah so you have 40 chromosomes, nice
vanilla fucking sucks have fun in your 5th gdkp while you cry and pretend your game isnt more p2w than retail is meanwhile there are 3x as many bots as there are players on every server
Outdated graphics for an MMORPG in 2004? Have you seen Everquest or Asherons call's graphics? Games that launched only a few years prior to WoW? For an MMORPG WoW's graphical quality was revolutionary. It's was stylized as a choice. You also never mention what game could be the graphical standard for that time. Ratchet and Clank might have looked the best out all games that year. However it was also stylized and just a single player action adventure game.
Lineage 2 came out a year before and was way better looking.
FF 11 !
Don't be touchy. The graphics in WoW were absolutely behind the times at release. Which was 100% by design. Like he said, Blizzard has historically released their games with tech that is considerably more accessible than their contemporaries. It's why they were able to capture so many people at the time. It was a game that a lot of people could install without huge, expensive PC upgrades.
@@Nami Most computers people had back then could barely run WoW, much less the games that came out that demanded way better specs. WoW’s graphics were simple but very consistently stylized and there was a TON of models they had to make
@@Augrills You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
Well researched video, but what kept messing with me was the audio cuts even within the same sentence. Can you say a whole sentence without requiring a cut??
Agreed. I found this very distracting. It's like one big run-on sentence.
To be fair we have to remember back in 2004 the graphics were pretty fucking good for their time. Even Warcraft 3 had great graphics compared to other RTS games.
Very true! On the other hand, 2004 was also the year the first FarCry released, and that was unimaginable for its time (in terms of graphics)
If only it's writing evolved as nice as the graphics

the story is always amazing

@@mutemateam Horrific Visions were the best and that has nothing to do with nostalgia.
@@AkiRa22084 bro you never played wotlk? its way better
Am I the only one who actually prefers old models running and idle animations?
These days all races look so wonky...
The old models definitely have their charm
They're just less goofy, more serious and sinister. That's the only thing I like about old models. New models are pretty much better in every aspect but animation. They lost that grit. Sinister animations and style.
They just made all animations friendly and welcoming just like in Disney animated movies.
@@sermerlin1 That's not just an animation thing. It's a texture and modelling decision as well. The new character models are all much "rounder" and "soft" which destroys that gritty feel you mentioned. In addition, the textures are "smoother" and the shading also works to destroy the grit feeling while doubling down on the cartoony art style of WoW.
Personally I've noticed that a few races, like Tauren and Dwarves, look a little less "edgy", mean and ugly. While I vastly prefer the new ones I can definitely notice that the old models had a different vibe and purpose to them.
Old models are gross.
you are out of your mind if you think wow had bad graphics in 2004,it was revoltionary when it came to mmorpgs,at the time the most popular mmos were runescape, lineage, everquest, ultima and dark age of kamelot, all looked like poop by comparison

I still remember when they unveiled the new mesh overhauls for the OG races and how refreshing it felt to see dwarves and elves and orcs have the same *vibe* as they did in all of the printed art. As much as I love classic for its very rooted RPG style, the beautification of the world was one of the best unasked for updates Blizzard did.
This is all I ever see when the topic of WoW graphics comes up:
Blizz: We're going to update WoW... except for everything in vanilla, TBC, WotLK, Cata...
Players: Vanilla WoW graphics and models were far superior to current WoW.
Blizz: Your system can run any game on the market at super-ultra-high-res mode? Play WoW, it'll run like a potato.
Players: The game is too colorful
Seriously, though, the art department continues to amaze me with every new expansion that comes out. It's too bad the gameplay isn't nearly as epic these days.
i love the graphics of classic and modern wow. It had charm and was pure fantasy. It didn't need fancy graphics with its style. Stormwind and the mage quarters and the forest surrounding stormwind are the most beautiful spots and are my favorite.
Was there a reason why Ardenweald footage was chosen when talking about zones being critiqued for their atmosphere and artistic decision? Last I recall, Ardenweald was one of the highly praised zone in SL for exactly those points. It was Maldraxxus and the Maw that got heavily dunked on.
Frostfire ridge always makes me think of my favorite banjo kazooie map
I think the player character modeling needs more upgrades, and if that alone is taken care of, it will be truly perfect
(like jaina or alexstrasza, auduin) I enjoyed it ty
Awesome video! I imagine a good amount of time was needed to gather and lay all this out!
It was yes, thank you
I've been playing since Vanilla Beta. Its so much nicer today. On original release, shadows were drawn into textures to reduce hardware requirements. this follows Blizzards original mission to deliver games to as many people as possible. The worst thing WoW has added is excessive Full Screen Glow Effect which came before the release of TBC if i remember right. The Glow used to be a base graphics toggle. Old world content is completely blown out. The art team became more conscious of glow effects usage with Legion.
As a wow veteran I shook my head on some of your statements but I can agree with you that whenever new animations, textures and models came every expansion I was blown away by the beauty of all of it. Especially the lands they have made. BFA was visually stunning everyone agreed on that. Every single expansion was stunning to look at, the creative team always blow you away.
1:52 inferior graphics back in 2004? I had to look at the ground just to make it through lagshire just outside of Stormwind at lowest setting possible.
mentiones "dynamic weather effects and better textures" for each expansion (even tho I doubt they improved that for every expansion), you need to always double the resolution of the textures in order to properly improve them which is pretty much impossible if you do that for every expansion,
but nothing about the real time cutscenes that were introduced in BfA which was a game changer
Keep up the good work guys!
Thanks a ton man
Old Orc models look way more evil and aggressive.. now they look like teddy bears.
I think wow classic zones look better graphically. In retail wow every thing is too smooth, shiny and soft..no hard edges to anything
Used to think this too but if you look at MMOs that use hard edges they are just not as visually appealing
@@shawn1860 classic still looks good in my opinion
Is there a video out there on how they created models, textures or the process of graphics in general? Ideally for vanilla, I'm super interested
Me too.
As a newer WoW player, starting off in Classic SoD, going to Dragonflight for the first time was absolutely disorienting in the amount of visual upgrades thrown at me. Pretty rad, honestly.
Phasing was actually introduced in late TBC with the smart ogres - but it was barely functional.
I love leveling in Shadowlands, it wasn't the same 5 biomes: forest, plains, desert, mountain, volcanic mountain that is in every expansion.
Complain to the universe then, since not like there are many biomes in reality.
@@AkiRa22084 Good thing WoW is fictional and not real
@@Killinshots We can't invent biomes that don't exist and are good in a game-design sense. Just like how we can't perceive 4 dimensions.
@@AkiRa22084what about minecarft

I thought it looked great 19 years ago when I first started playing but now I look at those old graphics and I'm like "Yeesh. Did it really look like that?"
It looks exactly the same as I remember it for me, and it’s glorious
Nice video!! Good change up from the repetitive tier lists that mean nothing in the real life game. This was a great change up!!! Loved it
Very much appreciate it
i think the new graphics are cool, my issue are the animations tho. in the past you could distinguish between a human mage and a troll mage for example very easily even from afar, because their cast animations were ancored to their race. now the animations are often ancored to the class instead and it often looks the same if a female zandalari or a female kultiran casts a spell. i dont like that... but i guess everyone has different opinions
Yet shamans still throw a wet noodle as a lightning bolt 😭
But the sound though xD
I just wish they would move to more serious and less saturated aesthetic. Dragonflight does not feel like world of Warcraft, it feels like My Little Pony.
I think they would have to take into consideration a new engine
@@MarcelianOnline it’s time!
@@TheFarGaurd And time is what it will take to build a new engine. Unless they use Unreal, it can take YEARS to make their own and for it work properly.
@@ravager48 they should just use Unreal, but keep the WoW aesthetic aka not hyper realistic, it can still be cartoony and stylized, just more serious and less saturated. Like vanilla wow, and less like the super colorful and childish look and feel of dragonflight.
It's crazy to see a game from 2004 that was behind graphically against other games in 2004, looked at now over 20 years later, and still be graphically behind games from 2004.
There's a fun little dev tale I heard from the Vanilla WoW dev cycle. A guy from the QA team came over to the devs area for a meeting or something & he got his hands on one of the dev machines & got 12 wow clients running at once.
This surprised the devs, because they had the top of the line PCs, but the QA team got hand-me-downs due to budget constraints.
As low as they pushed Vanilla WoW to ensure that anyone could run it they did still require people to have a dedicated graphics card, which for the time was pretty high spec for a video game especially as Intel had recently added integrated graphics to their CPUs. Just funny to see how far we've come.
Orcs 2001 > 2024
I love watching people who have no idea what they're talking about with absolute confidence
Notice how with every expansion that has a major improvement in graphical fidelity we get content drought, long times between expansions, along with time gating and annoying systems to compensate for the lack of content.
Cataclysm was the first big jump in graphical quality and the first expansion to have a ton of cut content, the first 3 tier expansion too, but it did have a dungeon tier for each raid tier.
MoP another big jump to the visuals, again 3 raid tiers, but this time we didn't even get dungeon tiers, but a lot of open world content.
WoD being the biggest improvement in visuals, boom only 2 raid tiers... no dungeon tiers again and very little overall content.
Legion and BFA didn't vastly improve the graphical fidelity and we got 4 raid tiers again and dungeon tiers and open world content.
Shadowlands was again an improvement in graphical fidelity, but not a big one, so we got 3 raid tiers again, but we still got open world content and dungeon tiers.
Dragonflight another improvement, but again not a big one, boom again we got 3 raid tiers only, with dungeon tiers and open world zones and a lot of content in general, but only 3 raid tiers.
But what do you mean lacking at the time? Vanilla was literally very advanced for its 2004 era. What game had such broad interconnected zones that had no loading screen at every 300 meters back then?
Like just seeing mulgore how spacious and open it was and how big it was then seeing thunderbluff. I never saw something like that in games and i played A LOT of games.
Its somehow better with the older graphics to be immersed in your surroundings because you're eyes could see everything easier.
Personally whenever im leveling in wrath im completely stunned by the graphical evolution the game had for that time, Grizzly Hills is probably my favorite zone and though i see people really angry with the game state currently, i cant believe they dont enjoy dragonflight for example, is the game in such a bad state that not even the incredible environment can compensate?
I play on private servers, so yeah, never got the chance to play retail
1:35 bro that's you? 😂😂😂😂
Huh, I never heard anyone complain about Korthia's looks.
All my friends loved the zone.
Thank you for the great and informative video. Over a long period of time, it's easy to forget how much has changed. It's remarkable how the game has changed over the years.
just one detail, the metamorphosis was originally a lock spell, demo lock to be precise
thanks for the trip down memory lane
I still kind of miss my female troll warrior's old face that they got rid of in WoD. She looked strange, but it suited her better than the higher-res textures. I guess I wish they'd tried harder to capture the personality of each character's face. Anyway... this is a fun trip down memory lane, ty!
Some of the most beautiful and epic Music I have ever heard from any game, hands down.
I played WoW when it was first released back in the day. There were millions of players. No one complained about the graphics. For the time, the graphics were pretty good. Anyone who did complain, why would they pay for a game they thought had crappy graphics?
I like the job they do nowadays even if there are some exception. Some models and textures looks less cartoon with their bigger eyes for some races than wod did before. Smoothing every models and textures of the horde races to made them more friendly than they are in open cinematics. They did some mistake after wod with worgen's and gobelin's faces looks like a disney models. They did also it for the vilain (humanform) for Fyrrak, Iridikron and razageth. I also don't know why Denathrius looks more vilain than Zovaal. Like Revendreth or some previous zone in wow (Karazhan crypts, voldun, Drustvar and naxx) looks spookiest than the maw or maldraxxus had to be. I also hope with war within they'll improve more light/shadow effects with or without Ray tracing.
Great video. Looking forward to more and more. I am especially awaiting you retrospective on the most important class of all time....the Death Knight!
Hey that's not a bad idea actually :) Thanks for the kind words man
Wow was impressive at launch, nothing like it at the time and now the new graphics are nothing compared to other modern games, I was impressed at the time but not now
Old character models had better casting animations imo. Male orc, undead and humans looked sooo much better casting animation wise
They had some nostalgic and iconic animations for sure, but I remember when they added the new casting animations on warlocks, and it looked like they were trying to siphon the life out of the world into chaos bolts and demon bolts. Now that's common place for your run of the mill bolt :))
I would like to see this style done with other long running mmos, finding the trends that helped with success.
FF14 is getting a remastered design. If GW2 was like this, I could've stayed longer
If you look at the top graphical games of 2004 they are comparable in overall quality. Computers were what they were, there wasn't much you could push back then when you were literally building an entire world where each continent had no loading screens if you walked from one end to the other. It was pretty revolutionary and I'm still playing 20 years later.
I still wish they would do a full modern upgrade of the graphics but I get it would be a massive undertaking. I remember I played the original in 2005 on a potato PC at all low settings. The view distance was so low that the first time I played through desolace, it looked like I was walking in the dark and could only see a few feet in front of me. A few years later on a new PC I couldn't believe it was the same place. 🙂
Wow Looks Like Mobile Game with a lot of stuff
Still completely unapealling for new players for a subscription game. I think that need a heavier change specially with the upcoming games
I don't really see that much visual improvement between Vanilla and WotLK. The water comparison in 5:08 is weird because what is marked as "WotLK" water is literally what water in vanilla WoW looked like, just in a different zone I assume. Likewise it wasn't like WotLK introduced snowfall to the game, because in zones like Dun Morogh, Alterac Mountains and Winterspring you could find snow in vanilla wow.
What often breaks the immersion for me are the animations. Some walking or flying animations of pets and characters are too fast or loop too much. It just feels unnatural.
And I wish they would hide the clipping of the armor or spell effects a bit more.
Omg 10000% clipping has to be fixed!
I’d like they add more unique animations, I think the graphics style is good but they need to do the outfits details in 3d, coz a lot of robes have flat textures.
I agree.
Tremendous video ! Thank you for making it !!
Thank u so much for the kind words!
I remember Cata / MoP era wow when the graphics felt SOOO ancient at that point. Nowadays in 2024 everything is nearly perfected and the game feels so much less janky than it once did. It’s crazy how the game felt more dated back then compared to today
Its goods to see the graphics got better but what they have done to the classes of the many xpacs has made the game fundamentally worse.
Warcraft's 3 engine is not what is used for WoW, even the updated version we have now.
Warcraft's 3 engine was used for WoW during a part of its Alpha development only.
Just a cookie for ya all.
insane video greetings from austria
As a graphic designer, I rly love how WoW had upgraded. Now if I go back to private servers (never again) I cannot play under the WoD expac. Developers called that expansion: Artcraft, and you told why :D
WoW's magic is this comic-styled looks. This game will never need to be hyperrealistic graphics, if it happens the magic will be gone. My favourite zones are Zul'aman, Uldum, Mulgore, all of Zandalar and Azure Span. But all zones are incredible in own style. For da Horde! :D
The script of this video feels like it was written by AI. There's so much repetition, and it just doesn't feel like it was written by a human who was thinking of what they were saying
I wouldn't say the graphics of vanilla wow were bad at the time AT ALL. I started playing in 2005 and remember being mesmerized by the graphics, especially while flying. We were comparing to the graphics of Warcraft 3 at the time, which were far worse.
I’ve been playing WoW since the Burning Crusade, I saw all these changes with my own eyes, but I still clicked on the video and watched it like: “Well, well, well, let this man tell me what I already know, but I’ll listen anyway.” XD
What a great video. I stopped in TBC, since then a lot changed.
Wotlk theme still gives me chills and tears
Can you do a video on wow's audio improvements over the years?
The modern graphics = Higher fidelity
The classic graphics = Much more soul in it
I honestly prefer the TBC models, I can't help but feel as though the design team should have just stuck with the relatively simple models and just added small touches to make the world feel more unique. Like, they could have added translucent windows and improved the weather effects and added flowing water and placed more unique "clutter" objects around the world for people to find that enrich the world and make it feel more lived-in.
What? WoW looked amazing when it came out. I was 18 years old at the time. GTA: San Andreas came out same year and KOTOR a year before, so it’s important to put things in retrospective. Just about every guy who played WoW in 00’s thought it looked spectacular.
WoW had amazing lighting effects and the colorful cartoonish graphics not only looked awesome, but made it possible to play with a potato. The light effects and drawing distance were something special. Also the animations were really smooth by that time’s standards - a massive factor imho to the overall experience.
I mean sure there was Morrowind, but that game murdered computers. Oblivion was still two years away and required a brand new computer.
Would love to see updated graphics for SoD.
20 years and its still got graphics made for toddlers! Amazing!
So much detail on those Body 1s and Body 2s.
When you have no more ideas you need to use better graphics.
“BFA marked the start of major player backlash in terms of expansion reception”… So, no player backlash in any of the previous expansions??
22 years and we still havent got a Grunt Helmet.
What is that green and black spell he casts at 13:33?

It's a borrowed spell from the zone Maldraxxus which gives you a shield. Can be used on any class.
@@DerWandergote thanks for the reply 🙂 it looks great
I'm just really hoping for new monk animation effects. It's the only class that hasn't had anything new since release.
They could include the graphics in season of discovery.. that would be nice

I kind of just miss when wow had a sort of darker side to the overall visual feeling, it's too cartoony/mobile gamey for me these days
i dont know why but i feel like retail wow is to much a mess and that i dont like how to races look and think that the game is getting to huge
yeah it sickening, and you can't see anything because of blurry effects...
11:43 you got these models in the wrong place
Had to laugh at the fact you didn't show the abomination that was female Worgen. God Blizzard really dropped the ball with that model.
Either I did not find it, or the OG female Worgen ain't even close to OG female Troll :D
True troll was worse but Troll never made it to the live game. Worgen had to deal with that model for 10 years.@@MarcelianOnline
Now if only it's employees devolved into the early 2000s era where they actually had love and passion for the game and actually wanted things to be fun instead of this generic homogenized glob that's meant to appease everyone.
and yet everybody wants Classic and nobody cares about retail lol
I get the sentiment my dude, also a classic enjoyer, but you are wrong. All I see on classic is dead servers after 2 months of whatever content they release while retail numbers are not only a few times higher, but constantly increasing as we get closer to 11.0
@@MarcelianOnline yes, they are doing their best to spread the classic community thin and convert players into retail through SoD and now Cata. They hate everything vanilla represents, which antagonises retail game design in every way. In any case, if you add up all classic eras and game modes, I don’t think retail is ahead - specially not prior to Metzen’s nostalgia PR at Blizzcon, which gave the retail pop the usual artificial hype-boost.
Also, everyone who is trying retail is being converted via the classic community being the only thing drawing people back to the Warcraft universe (see hardcore compilations, new vanilla seasons, Era’s popularity throughout 2023 in parallel to DF’s steady decline since lunch). Nobody cares about mythic + tournies and a broke lore with Kalecgos talking about family & friendship, pink haired furries, and sassy dragons shooting rainbows out of their eyes.
Until they change the tone, the playerbase you speak of will be summed up to girl streamers and Reddit mods with cat-ear headsets.
@@MarcelianOnline don’t get me wrong, I don’t want retail to fail - I want it to thrive. But it’s playerbase is already entirely disconnected to those of us who grew up with Warcraft 3. I am actively playing DF in parallel with Era, and it’s disgusting how retail looks like a casino with little mini games and desperate retention mechanics, and yet none of it seems to matter because there is no social aspect to tie it all together. Try levelling a new char in retail - it’s atrocious. Spam LFG mindlessly going through piss-easy dungeons that could be solo’s, have 0 social interaction and make 0 friends by 70. I haven’t even hit 60 in Era yet and I’ve made a handful of great Bnet bros and have a guild waiting for me to hit max level and raid with them.
I don’t see how they’ll fix this in retail, I don’t think they even want to. And as long as they don’t, retail’s pop will only thrive during hype season, and then crash.
Blizz kept the memory requirement low so the majority of people could play it
The problem is that when WoW was released, it was inferior to its competitors in terms of graphics, and the situation is similar now, although there was optimization before, but now there isn’t.
I'm still waiting for ogre race, more beard options for humans (larger beards) and many more features. Character models should get a revamp again, it's been 10 years since WoD came out...

Now its a game for 6yr joung people.
absolutely. ironically, we have the money and time, but the game has changed... now that classic is dying again, there's just no exit for blizz
I agree with you. That's been happening to not only WoW but to a lot of movies as well. They've become too family friendly. If only WoW had the same aesthetic, writing and style as Warcraft 3 I bet a lot of people would love the game more.
