I'm surprised "Contest Winner's Tabard" never makes these lists. Considering only one person from each faction per server ever got one I don't even know how many years ago. It was my most prized possession
Because people don't know it exists. The rarest "mainstream" items people actually take into account are the oldschool unarmored epic mounts, of which there are still about 1000 remaining in active accounts - I estimate the maximum amount of Contest Winner's Tabards in existence at the time of them being handed out was around 350 (2 factions per realm with around 175 servers world wide), and I would think the ones remaining will absolutely be less than 50. Probably less. I've played since launch and have never stopped playing and the only one I have ever seen in game is my brother's, who also still plays. And that's coming from someone who knows what to look for, your average player won't look for a tabard, let alone know or understand what they're looking at even if they did happen to see one.
Went and did some thorough research after commenting out of curiosity and I have found the exact amount of winners on wayback machines - the total is 292. 194 on US realms, 98 on EU realms, so 97 US realms and 47 EU ones, 144 total, a little shy of my 175 estimate. I have also found a Reddit thread stating TWELVE US accounts currently active own this tabard in their collection from SIX YEARS ago, meaning my initial estimate of 50 (or less) was definitely generous, and is likely closer to 20 at best. Pretty insane considering the aforementioned amount of 1000 total Oldschool Ride owners in the world with a currently active account.
I had the Haunted Memento from the Wrath prelaunch event, but lost it by forgetting it in the mail as I bounced stuff back and forth between characters when I was almost completely out of bag/bank space. I forgot it on a character and by the time I remembered, it was too late to recover it from the auto-deleted mail. The Memento got nerfed several times. It was problematic because the specter it spawned could and would frequently get stuck in one spot, and when the holder zoned it would spawn another, which could also get stuck. So as the holder moved around they could spawn practically unlimited specters that could get stuck and they stayed until server rest. Times this by the tens of thousands of players on each server and that single item and its spawnable mob started dragging the servers down, giving major performance issues. They changed it so it would only spawn a max of one specter per so many minutes. They could still get stuck but it as long as it was on its internal cooldown, it wouldn't keep spawning them. It was still problematic so they nerfed it again and again, until today the item itself does literally nothing any more. But they put a toy in the game that replicates the effect (and of course with a cooldown.)
The item still spawns specters today. I see it all the time on my paladin. The specter pops up and it triggers a cower animation. I've never paid attention to how often it happens, but I see it at least a few times a day I'd guess.
I deleted mine, and didn’t know why I was being attacked randomly by undead for years afterwards when I discovered that it was due to the Haunted Memento!

@Epic Gamer - Just a fun story i want to share. Back in the Pandaria era there was an incident in the Goldrinn realm where a Gnome named Thenagi became a Legend for acquiring the Invincible from a toxic Streamer that was live streaming. At the start of all organized Raids its common for the Raid leader to determine if a specific item that drops will be theirs or not. The Streamer named Johnny in no moment said anything that any item should they drop would be reserved to him. They finally arrived at the Lich King him self and killed him, the Invincible dropped and he started screaming on the stream saying it was his tho he never said anything before and didnt put lootmaster options so everyone rolled. Thenagi rolled a 100 and got the mount, Johnny started swearing and insulting Thenagi who trained the mount. You can find some videos of the incident on UA-cam if you want to check it out and have a laugh. xD

Uldaman drops 5-6 ultra rare items that are way more valuable than most items in this list… Miners helm, the Fez, a Gun and some more. Even drops an item that according to wowhead is removed from the game, even tho some have reported drops of it. That’s how rare it is.
I had the hauynted memento, Put it on AH, forgot I did so and stopped playing for 1 year, which after I realized it was gone. Even didn't exist in my datafile
i remember when i had finally made my own account instead of using my mom's. once i was high enough level we went through the dungeon to try and get me invincible and it dropped for me first try. after that for a few months i had insane luck on mount drops but it faded after a while.
Pendulum of doom dropped in my single run of Ulduman in the classic re release while running with my RL friends. I won it and saved it for a while which wasn’t a bad idea because I ended up needing to sell it to buy arcane crystals to go towards my hammer of raggy. Grinding for that ended up like a full time job. Think I only got about 1.5k gold for it though
While not an item, but the hunter pet that was a summoned pet from Dustwallow Marsh pre-WotLK revamp the zone got that had a look like Karoma (Spirit Beast tameable), but was an regular wolf. You needed a certain amount of haste, a trinket to use with haste plus Bloodlust and luck because you needed to get Tame Pet below the time the mob despawned which was like 8 seconds. It was only available for a little while due to needing quite a bit of haste and it was not very widely gotten. I played on Hellscream and there was only 1 other Horde i saw with it and at least 1 alliance night elf with it.
Meanwhile in Lineage 2 - this one of strongest monsters of that particular level has 0.002% to drop this item. No worries - it either requires whole party or full buffed character :). Oh and if you would craft it, hunting materials etc is pain and lower monsters dropping it have 1/333333 chance to drop it ... oh and they can drop 4 other items with same chance so virtually chance is 4 times lower from every mob. And RB dropping it has only 2.5% chance but as rb requires a lot of preperation (unless server is modified for way easier gameplays).
When ICC was current, Invicible was a guaranteed, 100% drop. Now it is a matter of farming ICC for few weeks to get it, so this mount does not belong on this list whatsoever. Overall however, very nice.
I find it funny how some low % of drop items "don't exist" while others are in abundance. I remember how I got both of the Warglaives within 5 weeks from the 1st drop to the 2nd one. How I got the Reins of the Headless Horseman on my 2nd run the very night it was introduced in the game, (few years later, I got another copy while I was helping a friend with the event) to the Baron's mount that I chased for nearly 4 years. As for the Invincible, every time I went for a run - nothing. This one time my paladin friend joined 'cuz he was bored' and wadda ya know? haha He was cursing at me, still passed on the mount. Its both frustrating and exhilarating. =)
probably not as rare as your finds but back in classic when I first started playing I dropped Edgemasters Hanguards in Felwood while still not even 60 level. And I mained nelf druid. Without knowing much I asked my guild if it was worth anything before selling and my inbox got spammed from warriors xD
you left off Pet Rock, which was available only by pickpocketing a certain furbolg mob in azshara before the cata redesign of the zone. no longer in game.
when we get under the 0.whatever range of Lootchance -> tbh i don't have the time for this nowadays xD the rarest i ever got was being the Lucky One to get Mimiron's Head out of 25 Players in Ulduar back in the Days xD

I got invincible in 5 runs :P My first ever mount. I started in late wod and started farming mounts. Closing in on the 350 achieve!
I feel like this was a missed opportunity to mention precious lucky ribbon
I got both taeshalach and hailstorm on both of my 5th runs 😊
i remember when i had finally made my own account instead of using my mom's. once i was high enough level we went through the dungeon to try and get me invincible and it dropped for me first try. after that for a few months i had insane luck on mount drops but it faded after a while.
I am surprised that Rivendare's Deathcharger wasn't here. Took me 583 kills over 6 years to get mine.
Holy shit. I had the Haunted Momento. I remember the shade following me, and not knowing what the fuck was happening. 10+ years later, I know.
Clearly he spent 245 years on that mount. A worthy feat.
Kinda neat that i have the BOE thistle tea recipe. I bought it on the AH for the collection and never used it.
I guess the RNG gods smiled upon twice so far. I got Invincible and Clutch of Ji'Kun on my first solo attempt in BFA
Invinsable has the same chance as any raid mount now and you can savea lockout. - so not rare anymore really
The Talisman of the Binding Shard is so rare this guy has probably never heard of it lol
it's not just rare, it's unique and unobtainable. Hardly counts as "rare."
Invincible? Rare? It only took me 10 years and hundreds of runs to get it... Such an amateurish feat.
I actually had the Haunted Momento and Invincible on my Paladin! And my Rogue had the Thistle Tea recipe!
Tusks of Mannoroth could make into the list.
Actually dropped the pendulum of doom in classic 2nd launch . But didn’t know it was so rare.
We had three of the love rockets drop in a single run this year. I still never got the toy though.
Talisman of the Binding Shard, you’re welcome. Mic drop…
How about Deathchargers Reigns from Baron? In vanilla, it had a 0.02% chance to drop. I ran strat hundreds of time before I finally got them.
I'm happy I still have my haunted memento and was able to get the new SL prepatch version too!
I go the Big Love Rocket this year. Could not believe my luck!
The haunted momento has had a new appearance in the shadowlands pre event
I knew spellshock leggings would be here. I saw plenty of PoDs on twinks in Classic, I saw one pair of spellshocks all classic
I have 2 of the haunted momentos and I think I threw a couple away at the time not realizing they could be sold/traded. 😆
I would say that the Time Lost Proto Drake is much rarer than Invincible. Invincible randomly dropped for me when doing Shadowmourne runs in Legion
I got it and used an old "meta gem" proc to make it happen
Used to farm the chromatic sword. Until it was removed. But I still had 12 of them in my bank. Sold for a lot of gold.
You forgot Papal Fez too
The rarest of all time is of course > The sword of a thousand truths.
as soon as the next exp. is out, the legendary items are outdated :)
Its cool to know I have one of these (Haunted Memento) its a reminder to myself of better times in WoW, and of my childhood
Haunted Memento has no business on here, I have like 15 of them and they barely sell for the price of a WoW token.
you left off Pet Rock, which was available only by pickpocketing a certain furbolg mob in azshara before the cata redesign of the zone. no longer in game.
Big Love Rocket... SO YOU'RE TELLING ME THERE IS A CHANCE!
I have NEVER seen hammer of vigilance drop from ToS
Got Invincible after my 3 first runs xd
4 years and i finally got invincible
I have every item listed and shown in the thumbnails, and I’m still bummed about the chromatic sword enchant nerf
when we get under the 0.whatever range of Lootchance -> tbh i don't have the time for this nowadays xD
the rarest i ever got was being the Lucky One to get Mimiron's Head out of 25 Players in Ulduar back in the Days xD
invincible was a 100% drop chance in WOTLK tho. it was still rare cuz not many guilds ever killed LK on heroic mode, but yeah, it was 100% drop chance.
I've got just one of them : the haunted memento 🙂
