- Ben Ashman, Phil and Jez from FLYLIGHT brought the NEW NINE trike and wing to Darley Moor and Micro Maintenance for people to come and see. It was a great time to chat to Ben and find out the history behind the how the series of Flylight trikes cam into being. In addition to speaking to Ben, it was great to speak to other pilots on their thoughts and reactions to the flying the NINE wing.

Documenting the evolution of these lighter machines is fantastic, Ben's enthusiasm and skill needs to be recorded for all time. Great video.
HI Terry, my thoughts exactly. Everytime I speak to Ben, you just want to record his exploits and journey of creation.
It's amazing listening to these knowledgeable aviators talking about building and testing flying machines. An outstanding video, Giles 👌👏👏
Coming from a generation that was very young when hang gliders were being developed I kind of take the shape and safety that we now have in both wings and trikes for granted. Ben is just filled with stories of adventures and "let's see if this works", it's just wonderful to listen to.
Hi Giles, what an impressive machine! I could listen to Ben chat away all day, a man full of intersting stories.
Some very excited people in the hanger that day, the Nine has definitly grabbed attention!
Mark needs to buy some tighter trousers for his next flight...
Yes I'll make sure he has his cycle clips on next time. Ben is wonderful to listen to and on the recent trip to Scotland is was just a pleasure to hear all about his adventures. I've tried to capture his adventures before in and interview but it would be a podcast 3-5 hours long. Thanks for following.
Excellent. Well done.
Hi Rob, many thanks.
Great to hear Ben's thoughts in it all - now we wait for the big reveal of the new Giles machine!!!
Hi Mike, I'm kind of excited. I've seen my wing in Germany, currently on its way to France for a microlight show. My trike is almost ready awaiting all the little carbon bits etc.
Wow Giles ....what a piece of kit .....i can see why ben is so proud of this😍
It's definitely going to be something to reinvigorate the SSDR market for flexwings. And yes Wow seems to be the most prudent word to describe it.
Hi Giles, yet again an interesting video. Really enjoyed. The history is very interesting 👍👍
It really was interesting to hear it. You made a guest appearance as well😁
Great to hear the history of Flylight trikes from the man who made it all happen. I have raided the piggy bank and found some cash down the back of the Sofa so Ben will be getting another order very soon.
Haha, that was a good sofa find then Paul.
Great looking piece of art 👌
Is it Shaun? It definitely is a nice work of art.
No, this is Dan. Most of the time, it's myself commenting and liking stuff. I have just got shaun linked up so he can start posting his bits as well. We need to think of a way to make it clear who it is lol. That little flex looks soo fast! I bet that's a joy to fly 🫡
Very exciting technology
Amazing speed range 😳
HI Doug, it really does have such a wind speed range, it's unreal.
Great stuff these are going to change microlight flying for the better
Hi Lee, it's really exciting times and great to be able to see where it has come from, and going.
Good morning from across the pond! It’s cool seeing this wing and machine. Also, it’s nice getting a history interview from Ben.
HI Tom, I was thinking I might get a good morning from you when the video released. I hope all is well over the pond? Any luck with getting a lfexwing ( Deltawing)?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Nope, still dreaming. At the moment all the shiny objects have me suffering option anxiety.
Oh no@@tomcoryell.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I’m kind of thinking Bivvybee because it fits within US Part 103 and can carry some gear. The new fast ones Ben is developing are appealing, but I would have to get a license upgrade. The other thing I’m facing is that all of the instructors here are affiliated with trike manufacturers and I know they will (as the Brits say) pressurize me to buy theirs. I really like the Flylight/ Microlight set of products and more importantly the people behind them. You all seem like folks I would love to hang out with. Not that I wouldn’t love to hang out with Larry Mednick as well. His trikes are great, but out of my range in both size and price.
Hi @@tomcoryell, Paul Dewhurst ( who has a brain for maths and policy) looked at an additional document from the FAA that gives additional factors for the FAR103 and the NINE wing will come under the requirements to fit in, you just have to limit the power to 33HP.
What a fantastic machine.
I could imagine more fairing parts to reduce the drag and it will be a bullet in the sky...
Congratulations
Hi Pedro I do believe some fairings are being put into the CAD design machine. :)
This is exciting. Thanks for another great video.
Man that thing is fast!
Hi Sam, yep it really is. I can't wait for mine to arrive.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Are you just getting a Nine wing for your PeaBee? Can't wait for more videos.
@huffdaddy3845 hi Sam, I'm getting a whole NINE machine, but keeping the PeaBee as well.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I think one of the really nice aspects of the Nine is that you will be able to keep up with your mates flying larger and much more powerful two place trikes with no problem.
@@huffdaddy3845 agreed, while also flying slow enough for the slower machines
What a cracking vlog...
Hi Neil, do you think it would give your Sulka a run for it's money?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 and then some, using a lot less fuel….
Flown it ordered it. It really is that good
Hi Chris, it's so hard to articulate the speed and control you have.
Wow Now it really shows the progressing of small self launch hang gliders to the now fully grown up SSDR
It really does. It's been wonderful to be of an age to see it develop to then be part of the progress in the latter stages. Who knows where the future will take SSDR.
Nice video showing Ben go over some of the history... Can we see a sort of 'How it's made'? of the flylight trikes?
I'll speak to Ben but I know they are a labour of love and are not a quick task. I know I'd have to stay for a few days minimum to capture the relevant points.
That’s an amazing speed range.
It really is amazing and the bar pressure is very light and gradual. I used the phrase, " it flies like a Wasp and lands like a Peabee. I can't wait to get my hands on the complete trike with more power.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 man I'd Love to have one.
Great video Giles! That wing is a bit fast for me to stay legal in the States. It looks great for the Sport Pilots we have, that aren't limited to 63 mph.
Hi Wayne, Paul Dewhurst Flylight showed me an additional document from the FAA that shows additional calculations that makes the wing come inside the FAR103 limitations. I can forward it back on this comment if your interested.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Yes. That would be interesting to see.
Hi Wayne, here you go. www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/AC_103-7.pdf
Rewatched 👍
Hi Patrick, was it as much fun the second time around?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Sometimes I watch the first time and I'm not fully mentally invested as I listen and or watch at work while doing something mondaine. So yes👍
Great vid.
Not sure I like hearing about this anymore. It's going to be hard for me to get my wife to let me get this😂
The info seeing the most out of this is that this small trike will keep up with the big trikes, with the right engine ? Will it be a mid day flying trike? Speed is one thing but handling turbulence is another. I was looking at the Evolution RevX UL12 for that reason.
Cheers
Hi Patrick, all the flights I've had have been in windy and rough air. I've yet to fly it in smooth air and the workload was very low and low effort. Ben said to me when he was flying it in Germany that it cuts through the turbulence. I didn't believe him, until I flew it. Flown it 4 times now, I'm just awaiting my wing, trike almost finished...but shhhh keep that quiet.
MATES !!!! 🎉🎉🎉 CONGRATULATIONS !!!🙏🕊️👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
here in Texas and lots of SPACE due to the USA National SEASHORE & Brothers I AM GETTING One ASAP & WILLINGLY Volunteering to be a TestPILOT Or The 1st "9'rrr" in TEXAS !!!!🪖🪖🪖as a Veteran I would Relish the Thought of PERSONAL FLIGHT ✈️✈️✈️
I'm sure Ben will be happy if you contact him.
Always thought the original Dragonfly was a cool piece of kit, then the switch to fabric fairings seemed a bit weird at first but makes sense when you think about it. Nine still looks nuts.
Hi Happee-meal, its great to see the progress over time. Composites are expensive but can make some wonderful shapes. Material allows for some fantastic sculpting as well and access inside without the expensive moldings. The NINE's performance is NUTS as you say. I'm excited to try them together.
Yeah...this is some great equipment. One thing...I know the wing is fast, but I would like to hear more about how it handles. To me I feel the way a wing can have light, responsive handling is really important. Also, how does it handle turbulence. Thanks for the video, I love this wing.
Hi Stone, I'll try and make a follow up video with all the questions but in short and I didn't believe until I flew it, it just cuts through turbulence. It's just on another level. It's so hard to explain.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Thanks so much... these new developments are amazing.
Thanks for another candid visual update of the state of my C42, does she get an appearance fee as she's becoming a regular? ;-) I'd rather she were appearing on my own channel though, hopefully not much longer to wait. The Nine looks like one of those things I didn't know I wanted until I saw it! I can feel a second aircraft coming on. Never did throw off the love of flex after moving to the dark side (which was under duress, as my wife was fed up with "sitting in a draught with legs akimbo" in the back of my trike!)
Hi Graham, I'm sorry it is a reminder and yes I can understand you wanting it back on your channel. The NINE wing is definitely one I'm going to have in my stable soon, exciting times for the Flexwing SSDR world.
Ben my ears pricked up at the mention of the word Binnacle, do you know if it will be interchangeable with an Adam trike ?
Sorry should be addressed to you Giles .
Hi David, I know the binnacle will most likely cover the area down the keel where the cords will run for the retracts on the ADAM. I'll let Ben know this comment is here. :)
Thanks Giles , I’ll have a word with Ben as well .
4 in existence hey - I wonder if one is also orange 😊
I think the Orange one might have been lost in transit.....lol
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Nooooo!!!! Lol
Sorry, stupid question: if the Nine wing is compatible with a PB trike and Moster 185, wouldn’t that package still be Sub 70?
Hi, it compatible but the criteria for Sub70 can't be met, primarily the stall speed isn't below 20 kts, 23 mph and the wing is slightly heavier so even less fuel.
Ahhh, I see. Thanks for the clarification. 🙂
Is your EOS Quattro on order yet? 😜
I can't see the 4 stroke on the EOS website. I don't think they are even on sale on the the UK, not that I have heard of. Just for my own curiosity, is anyone flying the updated Quattro in the UK? I went for the Polini 303, it was that or the Cosmos 300.
You need to make these for PPC in the states
HI Treasuremonk, do you mean a single seat Powerd Parachute?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 yes like a buckeye or such ,
@Treasuremonk I'll have to look that up. Unfortunately you need a licence to fly anything heavier than 70kgs in the UK and I only know of 1 instructor that can keep the whole UK flying them. We have a chap (Gerry in the video) had a hummerchute and is selling it to go flexwing.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 ours is called “Federal aviation rule 103” weight of machine total has be under 252 lbs, you can fly without a license below that. I have a Buckeye single seater, 550T APCO chute and 582 Rotax grey head . Just an idea, everything really good and affordable foot steered has stoped production here, the others are hand flown like PPG, or $20K +
I flew PPG for over a decade and have tried the PPG trikes as well. All the PPC in the UK are licensed unfortunately.
whats a pom doing with a kiwi jumper🤨
Not sure what the issue is. 😜
How suitable is the nine for a low hours pilot?
Hi Cerys, when you say low hours, what do you class as low and what have you flown before? If you can fly a P&M GT450 /QUIK or Quantum then the transition to the NINE wouldn't be too different other then its lighter.
