- Are you wanting to paint your car or truck car at home? Do you need to repair rust? Restoring a car is a big job. This is the full build video of our 1998 GMC Sierra K1500. We replace cab corners and rockers, fix all the dents, completely repaint it in our garage and then give it a four inch suspension lift by Rough Country including 18" Fuel Rebel Wheels and Mickey Thompson Baja Legend EXP tires.
Sprayguns used were Sata, Sagola 4600 xtreme , and Devilbiss Prolite S. Harbor Freight stud welder used to pull the dents. Big kid blocks, linear blocking tools sandpaper and Kovax used for bodywork.Angelwax buffing compounds, astro pneumatic mini buffer and Dewalt Rorary buffer to polish the clearcoat. I used a miller welder to weld in the patch panels from lmc truck. Hopefully this helps show you how to paint a car and how to do bodywork! Thanks for watching!

Son and I just started a 1997 GMC Sierra. I can’t wait to finish it and give it to him for his 16th bday in about 2 years. Truck looks great. Keep up the videos.
Thank you! My son and i did this for his first truck too! One year later.....he has kept it spotless inside and out. When they invest with their own hands it seems to make them appreciate it more.
One of the more informative painting videos out there, very professional.
Thank you very much! Thanks for watching!
You really took your time in the project turned out great. I had no idea all the steps involved in painting sanding and polishing
Thank you very much !
@@genuinejake9851😊😅😅
Nice OBS, can't believe you did all this in 40:23. I love my z71 would never sell it
Thank you! Took approximately 200hrs over a span of 5 months.
Watched the whole thing, got to the end, and laughed when you said "way too much time on your hands". I was thinking to myself, I don't think I would have the patience to do all of those steps to get the body/paint perfect like that.... But, I will sit and watch this whole video lol. Truck looks great!
😂😂 Well thank you very much!!
Awesome job!! She turned out beautiful.
Thank you! My boy put it in the ditch 2 weeks ago unfortunately 😢. Trying to get it fixed back up now.
Talented! Hats off!
Thank you very much
Look FN GREAT! I'd say that nobody could really ask for more.
I'm getting ready to do a resto job on my 1997 Z71 EXT-CAB 5.7L 4X4. I have a Skyjacker 2"-2.5" lift kit with front lower A-arms & front diff drop bracket. I also have a 3" body lift kit with a pair of RC tubular Nerf bar side steps waiting to go on, that will hide the frame from the body lift. I'm building this as my work truck & play truck for hunting, camping, etc, which is why I chose the kits that I did. To offer more travel & clearance over stock, yet maintain great on road characteristics. Because she will be on asphalt 80% of the time (I work on mine sites).
With the wheels & tires, I was rotating mass conscientious too! I have aluminum alloy 20x9 wheels with 4.5" back spacing.
For rubber, I went with Venom Power XTs 275/60/R20 (33" tall × 10.8" wide) witch yields a great ride, responsive but not too rough handling, decent off-road prowess and good MPG, paired up the factory 3.33 rear gear, makes for a fun, yet practical setup.
Your video has convinced me to do a digi-camo paint job using stencils with a matte clear coat. This should be a bit more forgiving choice all the way around. From painting, to imperfections, scratches, Arizona-pinstriping, dirt & dust, etc. Plus, a large pattern digi-camo will just look tits (I went with black wheels as well).
You should be proud of that beautiful red Chevy, she's a head turner for sure!
Thank you for taking the time to make this comprehensive video! It really shows what it takes to make a great paint job in a garage.
Do you have any other tips for painting over chrome bumpers?
Thank you and thanks for watching! I like the matte clear. It should be a perfect choice for your project. And it will definitely hide some things a gloss doesn't. Take your time on the chrome make absolutely sure you get it scuffed. Self etch or epoxy primer. I have come to prefer epoxy. Theres a great video on just this topic on Stout Customs channel. He is a great resource. Good luck with your project.
Good looking truck
Thank you!
You did a great job on the truck. Make your own business that be fun
Thanks!

Cool video. Congrats on your hard work. I’m in the midst of either selling my 2-door Yukon or plunge into restoration. You give me hope that it can be done. I’m stealing “sometimes you have to sit back and punt” to my sayings.
Youre welcome to steal my phrase!🤣 It applies to all kinds of situations
Nice to see a lineman with a some interesting hobbies. All we get up here is deer stories. You guys did a great job though! Also I find it pretty crazy that this just popped up on my UA-cam and I actually work with the guy! I mean I don’t even have social media, so it just recommended it by shear luck. I also did watch the whole video, and as you already know happen to have a lot of time on my hands. Haha
Ill be danged! Thanks for watching it😎
Good looking truck!
Thank you!
Great work

Dude amazing work. I have a friend with an obs truck that is also victory red. I have one im about to paint black. Attention to detail was so on point!

Thank you! I know what you mean about trashy videos! Thanks for your support.
Man....Altec hat, Missouri plates, KU shirt...gotta be local to me. I'm an engineer at Altec in St. Joe and went to K-State. Great build man! Awesome truck. Hopefully getting a crew cab short bed version myself here soon to do some work on.
Branson! Thanks for watching!
Great video. I got the same welding helmet!
I like it alot!
Gained a new follow, i picked up an old rust bucket of a 1997 k1500 not long ago, just put a transmission in it, body work on my rig is gonna be tough
Thanks for watching! I hope it helps ya. Good luck with your project.
Great video and nice truck
Thank you and thanks for watching!
That truck looks so smooth on the side it is almost a shame to have door handles.
i agree with that.
😂😂😂
I work at PPG and make those paints and catalysts. Pretty cool to see real world use. Great work!
Cool! PPG makes good stuff. Shopline series base coat may not make my list of favorites but shopline Plus stuff is decent.
@@genuinejake9851 you guys still achieved stellar results. Makes me wonder if I personally made that batch of paint🤔 I’ll never know lol
@@brandonkelsheimer1408 You must have!
Great video! Wish i had the time, equipment, and knowledge to to this to mine.
Thank you!
Very nice
Thank you!
I am so jealous of your truck right now 😂
😂😂me too!! I built it for my son. Wish it was mine! Thanks for watching.
Love my 93 lifted c1500 rust is garbage but puts down good power
They are neat trucks. One of the best body styles ever.
Great attitude toward your set-backs and limitations.
Biggest takeaway from an accomplished painter, take time in the primer stages to let it sit and shrink.
It totally sucks to see the results of not taking your time after you put sooo much effort into getting it super straight.
Yes, there will be problems. Yes, they can be solved. The sense of accomplishment is exhilarating.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Badass!
Thank you! It was alot of work but worth it I think.
Can’t beat that OBS 88-98’ body cleaned up like that. You did great. Nice job and definitely a worthy watch.
Thank you! I sure appreciate that!
Just a thought but since ya had the little holes in the bumbers ya coulda put little led lights in those holes and had some chicken lights. Idk just a thought that’s all enjoy the video…
Thanks for watching!
My dream truck when I was a kid was a 94
Mine was an 89 k2500 of my uncles.
Truck looks sick definitely change the taillights tho
thank you! I think we probably will change the taillights when the boy has more money. He was able to afford those and they will do for now
Im getting ready to do the same exact thing to my 1997 1500 not sure on color yet but i got a 6inch rc lift already. Im expecting it to take all winter and some of summer
I think in total this one took me about 200 hours. Some could do it faster Im sure, but I made mistakes that cost me time. I backed up and fixed them each time. Good luck with your build!
Wow
Thank you!
Dang I wish I know somebody in my area that can do a good job as you 😢
Thanks! I appreciate that.
Love the headlights, do you have a brand/ part number for them?
Thanks! They came from Amazon!
Thats a nice looking truck and a nice job documenting the the restoration. What's the backstory: where'd you find it, what'd you pay, and who is it for?
My grandparents bought this one with about 5k miles on it somewhere around 98'. After Grandma passed away it kinda just sat. We bought it from my uncle and this is my 16 year old son's truck. Thanks for watching.
@@genuinejake9851 Awesome. Great to give the gift of time and experience! Thanks for entertaining me for a moment.
@@GusMahn Absolutely my pleasure. I didn't know if anyone would care to watch or not so that makes it worth it in my book.
Can you share how much you spent and ab inventory list of what exactly you need to restore another truck like this, cause i have a truck like this but, is a two tone and is maroon with gold bottom.
The inventory list is kinda long. If you watch some of the individual videos I did it will give you a good idea. I had basically $2000 in paint, sandpaper and other body work materials including tape and masking materials as well as body filler etc. The truck as it sits including the purchase price of $2500 has a little over $12,000 in it.
why are you block sanding for wet sand? you're making your work harder.
personal preference.
bumpers on ebay - 130$ free shipping :/
Probably a good deal. We still saved $260 though and he gained good experience. Theres a bit of value in that too. Thank you for watching! Apparently ya!
What headlights are you guys using ? And link if you have it . Thanks . Truck looks sick 🤘🏾
Here ya go! Thank you! AmeriLite Black Replacement... www.amazon.com/dp/B07TP3N36M?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
@@genuinejake9851 what about the running / marker lights as well ?
@@benvilla7210 AmeriLite Black Parking Lights... www.amazon.com/dp/B07TP51SV9?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Where did you get the headlights! ??
Amazon!
how many coats of clear did you apply?
Four in some 3 in others.
How much do think something like this cost? I wish I had a place to do this
All told I think we had $7500 in the project not counting purchase price of the truck.
its m twin =)
nice
How much paint did you end up using
The paint mixes 1:1 and I bought a full gallon of paint. I still have some left and I repsrayed a couple pieces. All in all 3 quarts of paint, 3 quarts reducer so about 1 1/2 gallons of material
How much a job like this cost?
We had around $2000 in paint and supplies. $8,000 or so in everything we did not including the purchase price of the truck.
Where are you located I have a 98 chevy project for you to do.
Im in Missouri......but I just do this kinda thing for fun. Now Im back to trying to finish my 83 chevy.
Well that 98 looks really nice.
What size was the lift ?
4" rough country!
Thank u
What would a guy expect to pay for this job, out of curiosity
I sure don't know. My guess is 10k for a basic rust repair and paint. To have the clear blocked smooth and polished after the "basic" paintjob is time consuming so lots of labor which equals lots of money. Thank you for watching!
@@genuinejake9851 Dayumm 😆 Its alot of work i know
pls wear a mask and protect your lungs :(
Thank you. I basically always do.
GREAT VERY VERY INFORMATIVE
Thank you! Im very glad you enjoyed it!
