    I’ve been a houseplant owner for more than 35 years, during that time the only plants I’ve ever had pests on were my cacti collection, every winter they ended up being infested when I overwintered them inside to the point I no longer keep them. I currently I have just over 100 plants and I watch everyone on UA-cam struggling with pests and count myself very lucky that I’m pest free. I don’t quarantine new plants either

      I could have written this! I’ve had plants most of my 80 years and the only plant I ever had was scale on a philodendron that my neighbor gave me when she moved. I didn’t even try to save it, just threw it out. At the moment I have 10 different species and 6 of them were just featured in this video. Donna

    First of all, I love the sweater. So cute! 2nd of all I laughed so hard when you were talking about poles in the bedroom. 😂 3rd of all I have a few of these plants (pothos, zz, pepperomia) and when I think about it I’ve never really had pest issues with those either. I saw 1 mealy on my Carnosa queen over the summer and I just knew there had to be more but gf I haven’t seen another one on it. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Hopefully it stays that way. Thanks, Claire!

    I had a severe ongoing mealy bug infestation in my apartment, partially due to me not realizing they had taken up residence in some old wooden shelves I had 🤦🏻‍♀️ Years later a roommate brought in a plant from a big box store that had mealy bugs-again! I lost absolutely every one of my pothos, most of my other plants, but my two Agena silver queens were unbothered and have been with me since day 1!

    I want to cry! 😢😭 checked the plants sitting on my desk at work and noticed some unusual brown spots on my golden pothos. After looking quite closely, I saw a tiny black bug in the folds of a new leaf 😭😭😭😭😭 after 15 years, my work companion has thrips! Whipping out the big guns while it’s early…here come the granules and Neem oil!

    The plant that never had pest is my peace lily, which is at least 10 years old... It had other issues, though, but now, after 10 years it looks better than ever! It's huge, it flowers almost all year round (one or two flowers at the time, but still...) .

    Hi Claire from a French Claire, when I saw you in pink I thought that you were in the "pink Oktober" mood. In France it's the colour of the month Oktober against breast cancer, so you see a lot of people at least wearing a pink ribbon on their chest or a pink t-shirt or pullover... Pity you didn't put a list of pest-free plants, their name is only a very short time on the screen. otherwise very informative video, I subscribed straightaway, Best regards from Alsace.

    The only thing I like about winter.....is less pests. I'm already seeing a decline in my mealy bugs, which are my only pests as of yet. My aglaonemas have also never had any pests, which is one of the reasons I love them.

    I think the golden pothos being the only plant I've had when I moved made the plants I got afterwards not have any pests at all. The only inconvenience I have are fungus gnats but they are not even detrimental. The pothos perhaps made a shield or even a deterrence to pests since there was nothing else I've had for a long while. Hopefully, nothing does devastate my plants in the future.

    My manjula pothos grows like crazy! I have it at work in a NE facing window, bright indirect light. I’ve propagated cuttings and given away so many since taking it to work. Enjoyed this video! Knock on wood, I’ve never dealt with thrips or scale. I almost had an outbreak of mealybugs about a year ago, stayed on top of it though.

    I had an infestation of Western Flower Thrips this year and they attacked just about every single plant, including my Sansevieria, Hoyas, and Ficus elastica One of the worst Thrips to control, and they do so much damage to your plants. The only thing that stopped the cycle and killed them was something called a Sulfume HotBox, which releases a sulphur vapour into the air. The best bit is it kills other pests, too 😊 But this is something that can't be used in a household environment, so not everyone can benefit from this, which is a shame. It saves me so much time and money in controlling pests now.

    • @sommyxox
      @sommyxox 11 місяців тому +1

      How did you use the treatment? Did you move your plants into a shed or a spare room before treating?

    • @Carey.S75
      @Carey.S75 11 місяців тому

      @sommyxox I have a plant room where I use the Sulphur HotBox through the night for 8 hrs after lights out. It's so easy because it treats all your plants in one go. If I ever have a bad infestation, I will do 3 consecutive nights and then every 5th night for 6 weeks for 6 hrs. So far, it has kept everything away since the last intensive treatment. Through the late spring, summer, and autumn every year, I will be running the HotBox twice weekly. This is my first year using it, and I highly recommend it. You just have to make sure that there are no lights or fans on, and air the room in the morning. I hope this answers your question 🙏

    Claire, you are lucky not to have found pests on these plants yet and I do hope it stays that way. From my experience, pests eat anything available, only some plants last longer before being severely damaged. I had spidermites on ZZ Zenzi, spidermites on Sansevieria trifasciata Lauren (both cases they caused only little damage - but I saw them running around), I had spidermites and thrips combined on Manjula pothos (after a year long fight, not much was left and I ended up throwing the Manjula away), I caught thrips larvae on my Aglaonema Red Zircon and on even on my cacti and echeveria (that was very hard to believe, but I found thrips larvae in their soil from a shop).
    Majority of the plants I bought from online shops had some pests in the soil (spidermites, thrips larvae). My only plants that (so far) never had pests is a no-name crassula and my Sansevieria Hahnii (even when surrounded by pests, they didn´t climb on her and didn´t cause any damage). Honorable mention: my Alocasia Silver Dragon had thrips larvae on it when I bought her, I started treating it immediately and they caused hardly any damage, she lost no leaves and just kept growing - very hardy plant and I love her for her resilience.

    • @TheAnnez0r
      @TheAnnez0r 11 місяців тому

      I dumped almost all of my succulents (mainly echeverias) because of pests. Thrips would go in the tiniest of cracks in between the leaves, you can't really wipe them off otherwise you remove the powder on the echeveria, they don't tolerate pesticide much UGH. Doing that move overall has reduced my thrips infestation in half. Unlike you, I've never got pest from online dealers, but I keep getting some when I shop close by to the point that I don't think I will anymore (at least not the shop in question). An alocasia with pests at least is easy to wipe and monitor :)

    Besides my any of my pothos, peperomia ginny, scindapsus, aglaonema, snake plant and zz's, so far...I've never had pests on my dieffenbachia Tropic snow, nor my Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus, and amazingly enough, my philodendron tiger tooth (jungle boogie) has never experienced pests. But my croton seems to get hit with spider mite at least once a year when autumn comes around, and a couple of my hoyas have had spider mite, and one hoya with mealy bug (but caught it early).

      @@katiek4875 Nematodes are useless; costly, have a limited shelf life, and don't always give the best result. My method kills them within 5 weeks on all plants, and is super cheap. I never understood why continue to struggle to get rid of them, because they're by far the easiest pest to kill.

    That's good to know! I got a Ficus Lyrata delivered yesterday, and it came with hard bodied scale. It is my most expensive plant, and I was gutted when I noticed it. I've tried to remove the beasties, and treated the plant with neem oil. I also had to cut off a few leaves to be able to reach the scale on the petiole and stem.
    In my research how to treat for scale, I did come across a video about a ZZ with scale. You must be taking very good care of these plants not to ever have had pests on them!

    In general I've been quite lucky that I haven't had many issues with pests, but this summer some of my cacti and succulents suddenly all had root mealies. I feel like I've finally managed to get rid of them, but it was horrible to have to deal with and sadly caused a few casualties. Fingers crossed you won't ever get those, as they'd probably spread like wildfire before you know it if you reuse the water for all your plants.

    Don't judge me, but my Calatheas never had any pests. I literally had the Monstera adansonii next to them, full with thrips. And they never got anything. Knock on wood, they are my easiest plants.
    As for TC and different plant behaviors: my Monstera deliciosa is a strange one. It doesn't behave at all like other ones I see online. It's really slow growing (1 leaf every 2-3 months), it gets plenty of light and fertilizer and the roots are growing well. It stays really compact (I can only get one finger in between internodal spaces and I cannot take cuttings, because the stem is too tiny) and it sizes up really quickly (the fourth leaf already had fenestrations). I don't know what I have, but I love this plant and even though I have no space for it, it's these differences that make me want to keep it

    Thrips just took out my Golden Pothos, and wreaked havoc on my Baltic Blue Pothos. The thrips came in the soil I purchased (the popular one everyone on the Tube loves -FF), and they were on many of my plants. Glad I caught it early, but the Pothos was too far gone. Many of my plants were treated...some had damage, but I am grateful I only lost one. I agree with what you said...my Aglaonema was right next to the Baltic Blue, but she didn't get touched.
