The best wind for a distance roller is a straight tailwind. If you get it stood up with some spin, if it tries to cut roll or finish to the flight top, the tailwind will push it back straight, as well as adding some forward momentum. Side winds are the worst, as the wind is pushing a big flat surface perpendicular to your target.
This series is called Level Up, and it is such a great series.- But I think something that really needs to be mentioned is Brian.- He has (to use the title here) Leveled Up his game (social media/media presence) SO MUCH this season.- His on-field analysis during tournaments, this detailed but very applicable to all skill levels coaching series.- Everything he's been doing this year has just been so excellent.- Honestly, I love to see it.- I can't wait to see how much more he grows and just makes this his own.- He's going to be one of the best for sure.- Keep going Brian... As for this episode, man I needed this.- Learning how to throw/understand rollers is a goal of mine for this offseason.- Once I can start getting back out there and get my offseason fieldwork sessions going, I'm definitely going to be using the tips from this video.- As of right now, the only roller I do is the RHFH scramble roller.- I too use my Zone or my Putter...
Finally a video that actually explains HOW to throw a roller. I don’t know how many videos there are about rollers that never actually explain how to throw them. I’ve been playing since 2018 and have never been able to find a video with enough explanation for me to be able to practice and experiment with the backhand roller. Thank you so much for this.
In regard to asking what other topics, we would like to see covered: I would love to see a video detailing when to use a flex shot for shot shaping (especially in the woods), a video on backhand turnover lines - contrasted with forehand lines teaching viewers when to use them, a video about playing in the wind, a putting video, and a course strategy video. Those would round out your series well I think.
Yaaaay thanks Brian, money in the bank. I’d love to see some nose angle videos, as in how and when to throw nose up, which could dovetail into upshot talk I guess. I know y’all have a putting video coming, but jump and step putts are complete mysteries to me!
The thing I like is that it goes into how disc physics don't change just because the disc is rolling, I see a bunch of stuff throwing rollers and it's almost like the only object is get the disc to start rolling and bam you're done, and I see tons of people who only use super flippy discs that they can get up on the edge quick and easy, like -4 and -5 turn, and sure there are applications for that, but a big distance roller is not one of them, and when you see pros who have mastered the roller, like Simon going long on an 800 ft par 5 or something, he's not throwing a flippy disc. Air is still passing the flight plate, so that disc is going to continue behaving the same way in relation to the air no matter what angle it is on. Thanks for being one of the few places to actually point this out.
Finally a video on how to throw rollers that motivates me to practice and master this type of shot. It'll help immensely on the mountain courses here in awesome Colorado. Thank you!
Not to burst your bubble, but the mountain courses in Colorado have rock, brush and general unevenness which are not well suited for rollers. I can't think of a single mountain course hole where roller is the play off the tee. They for sure can come in handy on some park courses in the front range though! If you ever play in Longmont, hole 7 long (par 4) at Clark Centennial is a great backhand roller and at Wildcat Ridge, pad of 6 to 7's basket (tournament layout / par 4) is a perfect rightly forehand roller!
Forehand flip/hyzerflip distance roller here. Discmania astronaut and Innova star mamba are my two go-to roller discs for big flip roller forehands. Takes a long time and lots of practice to get the angles right, but so worth it in the long run. Laid down a 430 foot forehand roller today, and that's a lot considering I'm about a 300-325 foot thrower with air shots. Learning the roller has been a massive tool for me and my game. Great vid!
Just realized your throwing LHBH, im a primary LHBH player and its hard to find videos of leftys. Im coming back to disc golf after 10yrs and im starting from the beginning haha ive been in a couple situations where a roller helped me...good stuff!
Well done... Very concise and to the point... Really enjoyed this "level up" video... I like to roll a Zeus for power rollers, a Hades for the flip roller and a Cap.Rap. or Zone for forehand...
I'd like a video on showing more tips for form, when throwing each of the types. I've tried backhand rollers, and I'll even super exaggerate leaning back and how my arm goes, but it just won't turn over for me. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Thumber roller/tomahawk is a great scramble shot in disc golf. The other I like to do is the end of flight roller for really long open holes using a understsble disc Mantis like or more understsble in light weights 160 grams or under.
For back hand distance rollers I use a Lucid Escape. Forehand distance rollers I use an ABCG Teebird³ and a NSCG Firebird. Close forehand rollers I use a Rat.
Forehand I’ll use anything to get out of trouble from a A4 to a Buzzz to a brokenly BEEFY Swirly Star Orc. I use an Innova Monarch and Roadrunner for backhand. I prefer the Monarch because it’s in champion and has a dye job that’s fun to watch roll. I use to use a Prodigy F7 till I lost it in the top of a cypress when accidentally throwing a sky roller on hole 6 at Tyus Park in Griffin, GA.
was just telling a guy i played with recently that i don't think enough people learn rollers. Pretty sure I have only seen one person I have played with throw them. Took me allot of field work to figure out, every once in awhile I will even do roller only rounds. Anything outside C2 throw a roller.
Hi I don't have a lot of strength So I don't get a lot of distance will a roller work better for going further or am I wasting my time So I don't get a lot of distance will a roll go further
Don't forget about wind! Rollers are like little sailboats.
Super accurate and helpful reminder 🎉
fantastic reminder dude!
Sailboats don't have wheels

Bearheart, Sexton, Ian Anderson are best 3 who call the game.
Deerfield! Great course. Thanks for the tips Brian.
I am sitting here going "wait, I know that course"

SOLD💰. Much needed explanation of a shot that way more people (including myself) should be throwing. This is great stuff Brian!
Really appreciate having a lefty mentor, Brian.

wish he was still playing on tour. Brian Earhart shreds!
the tumbleweed from lone star is a banger roller disc

Fantastic video. Brian does such an awesome job of high level disc golf communication and teaching. Well done!

@@calvindelamere3489 I'll hit trees no matter what I do!
Let's go! Brian is the best!

Finally someone that throws a zone forehand roller! That's was my signature shot! Found out the undertaker is a sick forehand flip roller too.
Nice job Brian and Discraft. Good, detailed discussion, yet concise and understandable.
Thanks so much for this video. Could you possibly do a video on how to improve forehand distance. Thanks Brian
Firebirds work really well for forehand rollers, Discmania Essence for flip backhand rollers
Well done... Very concise and to the point... Really enjoyed this "level up" video... I like to roll a Zeus for power rollers, a Hades for the flip roller and a Cap.Rap. or Zone for forehand...
The Deflector is my cheat code for forehand rollers. I will tee off with them at times in the woods.
Would love to see a lazy roller/grandpa roller vid. I manage to make some goofy fairway layups with an Archer and some cut angle layover.
Love Brian and this series!!
I'd like a video on showing more tips for form, when throwing each of the types. I've tried backhand rollers, and I'll even super exaggerate leaning back and how my arm goes, but it just won't turn over for me. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I love these videos!
Can you please do a video about uphill and downhill putts?
Thumber roller/tomahawk is a great scramble shot in disc golf. The other I like to do is the end of flight roller for really long open holes using a understsble disc Mantis like or more understsble in light weights 160 grams or under.

The roadrunner has been my go to for rollers. I’ve also experimented with throwing Destroyers and Shrykes as rollers.
I am better at flip rollers than the other variations. A disc that has worked well for me is the Discmania Essence, which Kyle Klein also prefers!
Great stuff!
Nuke SS is my go to roller disc!
Ooooh I like that!
Great video. My arm speed sucks and form lol so I’ve only been able to land one roller with my innova champion roadrunner
about to play a tournament at deer field! nice!!!
EXCELLENT VIDEO
Nice video. Were you just visiting or are you near Deerfield?
Forehand I’ll use anything to get out of trouble from a A4 to a Buzzz to a brokenly BEEFY Swirly Star Orc.

Bearheart is legend. Dude is so smart
was just telling a guy i played with recently that i don't think enough people learn rollers. Pretty sure I have only seen one person I have played with throw them. Took me allot of field work to figure out, every once in awhile I will even do roller only rounds. Anything outside C2 throw a roller.
I rip an Optimizer backhand. Have 3 different weights and a US and Canadian version. Defunct I know but who doesn't love a mid roller disc.
I use the Avenger SS
So if I'm correct, for a power roller you essentially use the same form and footwork as for an anhyser, but use an over stable distance driver?
Discmania Fever for bh rollers and a dd felon for fh rollers. but i nearly exclusively play fh rollers
Omg I was just thinking roller would be great on #14 on my local course. He's at my local course. Lol
Thanks for the video. Really like the thing that you're a leftie and me not needing to turn everything around in my head \:D/
Hi I don't have a lot of strength So I don't get a lot of distance will a roller work better for going further or am I wasting my time So I don't get a lot of distance will a roll go further
Could we please have a right hander do this video? Its confusing as it is but with a lefty way more confusing!
Thumber roller?
Good ole Deerfield
Let's talk about loosening up, Brian. Go ahead and undo that top button
Right before you throw kiss your disc and say I may never see you again
Brian Earhart - so hot right now
Check those cross winds. You might never find your roller.
As usual lefties throwing me off lol. Quality content. What is discrafts roadrunner?
Spent half the video trying to figure out why he was saying so many wrong things, then i realized hes lefty. lol.
That's screwed up. I watched this whole video waiting for tips on my forehand rollers 😂
Step 1: Don't live in the mountains.
