I am probably your most attentive student. And I am actually improving. I have taken on a different approach. It's the same as a ball batter. The batter holds the bat with just the thumbs and index fingers. Until the swing just at impact. I do that with a disc. Only gripping it with full attention while entering full swing. Kinda like a controlled rage. I really thank you for your time. People like me consume every word you speak
One of the very best throw fundamentals that there is. Thank you Robbie C. for making this one. With practice, practice, and more practice, this will become automatic in the correct throw. The 10 o'clock with the back of the hand is something I will stress to all players, especially beginners!. God Bless You Robbie C.!!! This is a great/needed way to nuance this part of the form conversation. I won’t hit the field until tomorrow but I know that this mental shift is going to help. I used to go 6 to 12 (starting the lawn mower) and grip locked like crazy. Since switching to 7/8 to 10 o’clock and my new common error is a fluff (early release). I feel like this mental shift will help me find that balance. Can’t wait to try this out.
This video really made a huge impact for me! Not necessarily the “back of your hand vs the disc” but the way you explained things together enabled me to realize a couple key things I wasn’t doing. Just a few shadow throws, then to the net… and I’m getting snap almost every time now! Thanks for everything, Robbie! Keep on keepin on 🤘😎
Thank you Robbie. I have been watching you and Over Throw since I started playing 2 years ago. This July has been a high for me I started hitting 300' and got my first Ace and played my first tournament following your advice/teachings.
Love this video! Ive been playing around 2 weeks and was so frustrated with a nose up backhand problem i switched to forehand with pretty good success. This video made me realize i was releasing super late, probably at like 1 o' clock, resulting in nose up flight and no distance. Super helpful!!
The best part of your channel is that you share your struggles and your achievements. I think you’re on to something with this concept. It totally makes sense to me what you’re saying about the back of hand not the disc. I will be trying this out over the weekend. Along with keeping the elbow up to stop the case of swoops I’m struggling with myself. Thank you for your efforts and content!!
Yooooo I put this into playing 18 today and geez wow did it make a difference. I felt consistency and a looseness I’ve been hunting for. The slowing everything down and focus on smashing the back of my hand through synced everything up perfectly. Thank you for teaching this!
Makes sense! If you don’t want to think about where your hand ends up you can allow your wrist to be loose so it curls when you hit your brace / sling spot your wrist will automatically curl in and sling open!
I feel like this is definitely the correct way to think about it. When I started to focus on keeping my hand on the outside of the disc to start my throw and focusing on the back of my hand/ base of my wrist as the hit point. That has given me instant results and much easier distance and a much more relaxed throw. It feels much easier to think about that hit point and just allowing the disc to spin/eject naturally out of my hand. It seems to have given me an immediate boost in spin/speed and distance. You can feel the difference in explosiveness. I believe it’s because you’re allowing the wrist to open up naturally and it gives you the whip motion that you want. Great video! Seems like a great way to help explain the thought process to get your body into the ideal position.
I just got into disc golf about 2 weeks ago, just got back from my 4th time out, and I have been binging your videos - Love your coaching and tips, my buddies who hover around par have seen noticeable improvements in my game every single time I go out. I try to internalize a lot of your info and it's helping me a lot. This game is sweet as hell and I'm really enjoying it. Thanks for everything and keep it up, cheers from Canada!
This video was exactly what I was looking for. Along with holding on and letting it rip rather than releasing. I'm looking forward to hitting the practice field. Thanks for the advice!

I wanted to come back and find this video. Even though you most likely wont read this. But this helped me. Im still working out the kinks. But ive been trying to learn to throw straight and hit my lines and this is the closest to accurate ive gotten. Also struggling with the nose up as ive been correcting n leading with the back of my hand has helped keep it down as well. This is an awesome find. Thank you for sharing. U dint know it butnyouve helped my game so much. You also have made me question if i ahould ever play again. Its been a struggle lol. Hopefully i can be part of the birdie fam soon. Keep crushing it

Every time I visit my daughter in Birmingham AL I play George Ward course. Can’t wait to try the 10 o’clock back of the hand shot. Thanks for the video!
Hey there, Mr. UA-cam man! I want to start with a big thank you. This is my first year playing, and thanks to you, Overthrow, and Armory Disc Golf, I have gone from throwing a 45 over at the beginning of the season to a +3 on my most recent round. You are all amazing assets to the disc golf community. I was hoping you could help me bridge the gap between two of your videos. I believe I recently watched videos from both you and overthrow that both stated that you shouldn't "help the disc" out of your hand. It sounds like your grip pressure, speed, and spin should all work together for a release point at 10 o'clock, at which point the disc rips out of your hand. Am I correct here? It would be great if you'd release a video about bringing all the concepts of nose angle, launch angle, release angle, etc. together. Thank you for your content!
This is very helpful for me! A couple of weeks ago, I decided to fix my form. I slowed down with my walk up, hit the 10 o’clock with my right foot and released the disc at the same position. Like you said in the video, I grip lock due to the adjustments but 8/10 throws have given me an average of 350’
It’s still hard to do because i spent 3 years doing it all wrong. I use to lean with my head and shoulders forward, my right foot landed at 12 or 1 o’clock and I curl the disc around my body before the release 😅
@@FishingWithAlexSat this point it's probably more about your arm speed and disc rotation speed to get more distance..a almost loose grip at first then a natural harder grip at the seemed to help me a lot too...I stopped playing for years and just started up this year again...and just trying to get back to my normal 😂😂
@@darkfafnir4389 I think so. Doing some fieldwork later so I will try that. Trying to teach my body the correct form to flow naturally will come in time but for now, I can’t help but think about the correct form while I’m in the process of throwing. Too much going on for my mind to process 😂
@@FishingWithAlexS try one step at a time..like work on the stand still rotation and grip...then add in the steps... muscle memory is def the key..cause the first time I picked a disc up my body just remember...but my strength isn't the same cause of back problems I have and had
Great video and insight. I have found the same in my form adventure over the last 18 months or so. I concentrate on throwing the back of my wrist to the 10 O'Clock position. If my form is correct and the wrist is somewhat loose, I hit the spot with the back of my wrist, the hand, and the disc SNAP and the disc goes exactly where I want with much greater distance and way less effort.
It's been really great seeing your form change and throws improve lately! Really putting in the work! Thank you for sharing this! Can't wait to try this out as it really clicks for some of the form issues i've had lately!
Hey Robbie- your last video about keeping the throwing arm farther away than you normally keep it helped me a bunch. I also started to incorporate more shoulder turn and once warmed up I am 80% in the 400s with my drives! It just feels like my body is turning more as a completed unit. Thanks! I’ll try this video for sure because your methods seem to click with me. I’d like to see what you think of Jennifer Allen’s throwing style. Have you tried it? I actually liked it and it’s similar feel to your last video. Keep it up!
I tried it tonight. It actually works well. A few more grip locks than normal, but definitely added some power. I was a little skeptical, but you proved me wrong.
This is really awesome and I dont think covered. Will definitely try tomorrow at field practice. If you’re ever in Nashville please do a clinic or lessons. i might even come to Bama for one.
I think the overthrow disc golf windwaker drill is in the similar vein as this concept. I’ve also found that by concentrating on the back of the hand, it helps “turn the key” which overthrow has talked about. Lastly throwing the back of the hand out there has helped me follow through on plane easier and reduced off axis torque. Great video and thanks for your content!
I always thought I was hitting 10 o’clock correctly but always seems to fire off to the right. I get the feeling that I'm doing exactly what you are saying and going thumb to o’clock and not the backhand. I'm going to the field and trying this first thing in the morning, also hoping this might be the exact reason to always grip-locking putters. Awesome video as always!
Thanks for clarifying. You are the first to do so. I guess that forearm is similar: the palm goes to 2 o'clock. The normal circular movement of the shoulders and the simultaneousl straightening of the wrist make the actual release be 12 o'clock.
Pimp **slap** at 10, got it! Filmed myself a few days ago from behind, and realized I was reaching back even past the 6 o-clock position to like 5 o-clock, getting the disc stuck behind me and muscling more than I thought, so I really gotta exaggerate reaching out instead and get that separation. I know I got mo powah!
As someone who is commonly discouraged by my lack of distance, this gives me something tangible to work on over the more nebulous methods I've seen previous to now. I'm going to go back to working on my distance with this in mind. After I watch this video a few more times.
I've been trying to throw straight/at a certain point for awhile now and thinking more of it as releasing at a certain point. Just went to do some fieldwork after watching and ngl... I have never had something like "throw the back of your hand" work so well for me, instant results.
Great content as always Robbie Thank you! I've been playing for 30+ years but am self-taught and have gone through injuries and have to better the form. Love the shoes too! What shoes do you use?
Ive been out for x2 sessions with just putters working on this. About one in 5 are going EASY. Not straight hahaha. But dang. This is probably one of the best things to teach the pocket and hit point out right now. Im going to stay right here till it feels natural and I'm tapping in to it every time.
I changed ny runup to a small Crow hop. Instantly made må timing and accurasy tons and tons better! You should try it out with tour backand to 10 tip. Think it Can help with the swoup allso 😊
Man I've always extended to noon and would let the disc pull itself to 1-2 o'clock and would point my body more left to compensate for release direction. I can't wait to try this
If I am putting this together with a run-up which happens to also be on an angle to allow my hips to fully rotate back, what is the 10 o'clock relative to? My run up angle, or is it relative to the desired path of the disc? I.e. I want the disc to start its flight going 6 to 12 so I really focus on getting the back of my hand to 10 relative to that line? Also would you suggest doing this from a standstill first to get the feel for where 10 o'clock really is, then add this to a run up? Great video, as always!
This is a GREAT aha moment for me. I've definitely been pointing the disc rather than having the disc rip from behind my hand at this point. Honestly can't wait to drill this
Do you feel like you get more wrist snap doing this? I started the backhand “hit” after watching an old Dave Dunipace tutorial and it really seemed to add acceleration at the hit point.
Tried this at my easy course today. On the 430 foot hole i typically reach around 300 and have a weird upshot. today i threw 315 and it was pure hyzer the whole way no extra at all. makes me think i can push 350 with a full flex show.
When I started playing last year, I was taught and watched many people online keep the disc as close to the body as possible in a straight line (6 to 12) and that's what I've been doing but honestly it just felt kind of unnatural. This concept just seems to make more sense, especially for casual players like me. I also need to work on being more smooth and consistent with my release and stop trying to bomb every shot.
I've been working on this exact thing. Trying to not over rotate my shoulders and stop the left side of my body so i get to 10. The problem is doing it my vertically so every shot isn't a hyzer. I hit 509ft out of 100 throws but can't get past 460 now. I want to film and try some more adjustments but the heat index has been like 105-110⁰ I've noticed pros do this long ago but i finally think it is starting to click for me. Hopefully we all smash 500 😎
if you can make your fingers snap without a disc by making throwing motion you can throw far.. start arm in L shape , noodle arm , coil body and at same time straighten arm , the second you uncoil the body you bring forearm in and out and at same time slap in and out with wrist in fast motion.. Dan Beto Drill 2.0 will help to visualize this!
Robbie, I think one thing you should cover for adding distance should be where to pivot on your front foot. For two years I was pivoting on the ball of my lead foot while throwing. Someone pointed it and I slowed down my walk up to ensure my lead foot was planted and began rotating on my heel. I went from throwing 350ish feet to 450ish feet. Where to rotate on your foot is something I never heard somebody cover!
It's more about letting your hips and shoulders make that rotation..the energy travels thru your back leg all the up thru the rotation to the release had. Grip, arm speed and rotation are def the 3 keys to throwing accurately and far
@@boostghost my elbow is jacked up so I'm healing..but once I get back I'm gunn start recording my approach and throw..got a net to throw into and everything..😅😅
I don’t think you should be focusing on whether you rotate on your ball of your toes or your heel, if timed up right, the rotations and pivot should just happen without you really being on one of the other. you definitely want your foot flat on the ground tho, which would be hard if you’re rotating on the ball of your toes
@@nickwright3366 Rotating on the ball of your foot robs you of power because it means you're not fully bracing into your plant which in turn will keep you from pushing/rotating your lead hip back (people mostly cue this on pushing their knee back) which gets ground forces traveling up the chain. If you don't do this the power you do get is mostly swallowed up by the big muscles in the leg, and it puts unwanted torque into the knee which will eventually lead to injury. If you're bracing correctly and pushing the heel into the ground and knee back, you'll automatically rotate on the heel.
Good video, something is going on with your lens though. Either it was foggy from a quick temp change or it needs to be cleaned. Edit: Now at the halfway point and it looks like it cleared up.
I think he a) cleaned the lens with a cloth towel and b) the sun was overhead and slightly behind him, so that creates a haze effect in the lens. When I film I a) use a lens wipe with cleaning solution, and b) ensure the sun is behind the camera. Another tip is to film as close to solar noon as possible, as that's typically the brightest part of the day, and the sun as highest in the sky as well. Makes for easiest filming conditions outside, typically.
Just a lot of types of shots needed to be good at this amazing game/sport. That’s why I love it. Something that could be fun. Mini disc golf baskets but you have to build a paper airplane to complete. 5 holes. 😂

Man I've always extended to noon and would let the disc pull itself to 1-2 o'clock and would point my body more left to compensate for release direction. I can't wait to try this
Robbie, I love the way you say "Mr. UA-cam Man" 😁
If I am putting this together with a run-up which happens to also be on an angle to allow my hips to fully rotate back, what is the 10 o'clock relative to? My run up angle, or is it relative to the desired path of the disc? I.e. I want the disc to start its flight going 6 to 12 so I really focus on getting the back of my hand to 10 relative to that line? Also would you suggest doing this from a standstill first to get the feel for where 10 o'clock really is, then add this to a run up? Great video, as always!
4:20 yep, and this is usually next to a water way or really thick wood. I hate nettles, just saying.
This is a GREAT aha moment for me. I've definitely been pointing the disc rather than having the disc rip from behind my hand at this point. Honestly can't wait to drill this
aha moments never work
Either does your Mom
Do you feel like you get more wrist snap doing this? I started the backhand “hit” after watching an old Dave Dunipace tutorial and it really seemed to add acceleration at the hit point.
What shorts do you like that have belt loops?
Thank you.. I was wondering what you meant by hitting 10 o'clock all this time. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle.. G.I. Joe...
I’m not gonna go into specifics so I’ll say.. hope your stomach survived the night. 😂🎉 100k
You raised a lot of money brother. 14:55. That was money!
I'm a 10:07 guy 😎
Your form, smoothness and shot shape resembles KC
12:29 for the full 10%
???? Would it be better to learn this 10 o clock throw 'Stand Still' first or does that just mess up the foot timing when you go back to run up ????
WHERE can I get your shirt! Disc golfing meeples!
in an old vid Will schusterick says the disc starts coming out of your hand shortly after it leaves the power pocket
similar idea to a backhand tennis lesson i had, interesting...
Love the video great info! I need some advice on growing my channel. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
the logic seems on par, I must go to the course and test this supreme theory, lol
@@darkfafnir4389 I wonder if maybe rotating on the heel caused my hips to engage more?
Is your lens fogging in the heat/humidity, or is that a filter?
Calling it a release is very confusing, it rips I don't release.
👍
The answer better not be cat food Oreos!😂😂😂
Just a lot of types of shots needed to be good at this amazing game/sport. That’s why I love it.
Something that could be fun. Mini disc golf baskets but you have to build a paper airplane to complete. 5 holes. 😂
