I came to the Gila/Mimbres headwaters region sorta unexpectedly in 1974, and, after short youthful interludes elsewhere since, here I still am. As I like to say to newcomers, freshly in love with the area for various reasons, "You've chosen wisely."
Ah, my hometown where I was born and raised. I grew up exploring, hunting and fishing that whole area. I"m glad you found the Grapevine/Forks area and Doc Campbell's homemade ice cream. Just a couple of miles north of the visitor center along the Continental Divide is a really cool natural and pretty much used only by the locals, hot springs where I used to camp along the Gila River called Jordan's Hot Springs. I'm so glad you explored and enjoyed Silver City and the mining district. Thank you for shedding such a positive light on my home town with your amazing cinematography. Safe travels to you guys.
New Mexico is one of my favorite states . The cliff dwellings are fascinating! The Cat Walk Trail was wonderful. I especially liked the fact that you had it to yourselves
Great vid! Love seeing the lesser known areas of states. Looks like you had everywhere you went all to yourself and you can't beat that. And yes you're correct, never too cold for ice cream!
Absolutely Amazing! So glad these are preserved and protected! Roosevelt knew what he was doing! Too bad some don't have respect for our past. Those mining companies did a lot of damage!
@@AdventuresofAplusK I've watched many YT traveling vids and I just want to say I think yours is THE BEST!!! Perfect blend of scenic photography, interesting little places along the way, great narration & personal touch, and food, food, FOOD! Well done! :)
14:00 in 1997 I spent the summer touring the US. I remember stopping here and getting the homeade ice cream. I rode my harley over the mountains from silver city. I remember free ranging cattle on the road. On the top of the mountains there was an old hippy in a chevy blazer watching a forest fire many miles away through a pair of binoculars. I stopped and talked to him for a bit and he took a picture of me on my bike using my camera. On the way back, there was a thunder and lightning show, and i got a little wet. I was 22 years old and had my whole life in front of me. Wish I could relive that day, obviously.
I spent 11 years exploring that part of New Mexico. It's definitely an under rated part of the world. I went to the Catwalk I don't know how many times. It was a favorite place of mine to hike.
Fantastic video of our area! I will re-explore my stomping grounds again because of your video. Been many years since I have been to these outskirt areas and now as a retiree you have me eager to pay these places another visit. Thank you!
You have found the most special area in the lower 48. You have only scratched the surface of what there is to see and do there. Very few people know about the Gila.
We loved your video! All the local places you stopped and all the history you gave was wonderful! And thanks for stopping in at Doc Campbell’s Post and including us! We are honored! Hope you have a wonderful trip! Can’t wait to follow you on your travels!
Thank you so much for making this video. We just went to Silver City for a long weekend. We did almost everything in your video and had a wonderful time. Please keep making your videos.
I’m so enjoying this journey. I’ve been following you ever since I found you by way of your exceptionally well written blog post on traveling with a reactive dog. As travelers with a reactive dog, we appreciate that you show places where you can comfortably and safely adventure with your fur baby. Plus, your style of travel off the beaten path is similar to ours. I think my spreadsheet of places to visit is going to fill up by the end of this series based on all the fascinating places you’ve shared with us in just your last two videos!
We feel your pain about having a reactive pup! It is TOUGH! And there is a lot of anxiety and stress behind the camera when it comes to having Kona with us. But we are so glad she can join us for things and mostly it isn't embarrassing! We have loved visiting some lesser known spots so far. Hopefully we can give you more ideas as we continue on!
We really enjoy watching all your videos last year. We are in the high mountains of Colorado a retired couple who love your adventure. Keep posting and be safe.
We really enjoyed learning about the Gila Cliff dwellings. That’s really cool to learn about some of the parts of the US we’ve never even heard about before. Those photos turned out amazing! I think that’s our favorite photograph of Brisket the Van ever.
I found the first of your journey, and it is amazing. The west is just amazing. I love the cliff dwellings, but really I loved it all. I watched parts of the Alaska last night, and this morning I found the beginning of your journey. I am really enjoying every single video and all the amazing places you have gone. I loved the old mine too. You have the right idea on how to travel. Thank you so much for sharing your journey.
Absolutely incredible! How you guys manage to find all of these neat places is truly a gift 🥺❤️ The cliff dwellings are a gem, as well as the trail you found!!
Really nice job guys. Especially good soundtrack choices. Great summary of the area with good background info and brief map views. Can't wait to follow your trail. Godspeed.
We love southern Utah and all of the ancient cliff-dwelling ruins, but Gila looks absolutely amazing. It is now on our bucket list. The Catwalk looked cool too, and that whole area deserves more exploration! Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Great vlog! It's always interesting to see my town from someone else's perspective, especially since I live and film videos here everyday, lol. I just found your channel and am enjoying the recent content so far! Also, yes, Tranquil Buzz is the best coffee shop ever.
You guys do such a great job with your videos! I will be heading to that area of New Mexico soon and I can't wait to check out lots of the places y'all visited. Thanks for sharing!
NM - truly the land of enchantment. Love the vibrant colors on the buildings and houses. Only 53 days until spring!! Looks like Kona was guiding mom and dad like the white dog was guiding the goats. 👍👍🙋♂️
Not sure of your exact route, or how far along you are by the time that you released this video, but US 60 between Show Low AZ and Globe AZ is a pretty drive that switchbacks down several hundred feet to cross the Salt River. The drives from Globe south towards Winkleman, and west towards Superior are scenic as well.
@@AdventuresofAplusK Are you coming across on I-10? There is some good hiking in Chiricauhua NM, some nice scenery at Bisbee (Queen Bee mine tours), a really sweet cave at Kartchner Caverns. Also nice hiking in the Tortolita Mtns (just north of Tucson), and in the Catalinas. You can also scale Picacho Peak.
My wife and I have been following you guys for about a year now. Although we're at different stages in life, we love watching your journey and the places you go. We know we are getting s late start as we plan our retirement, and hope to get to many of the sites you've shown us! Thank you!
Such a beautiful and unique place. We were glad we got to experience the Gila Cliff Dwellings and Silver City when we lived in NM. Oh and you had us ooohing at the Poblano Butternut squash soup. Thanks for sharing.
I’m from Deming NM. I’m sure you guys passed by. But if you ever stop in Deming, you have to eat at Irma’s. Hands down some of the best New Mexican food. Especially the carne asada smothered burritos. There also a place called city of rocks between Deming and silver that I think you guys would really like. Love to see your videos and your explorations in NM
I agree. Every little small town I visited in New Mexico I met so many people who would just sit and have long conversations with you. Everyone is so super nice everywhere i visited there. And don't get me started on the food, always amazing. So so many little hidden gems to discover in New Mexico, I see something amazing everytime I pass through
You were so close to Mogollon. I always do mogollon and catwalk the same day. I also always do the cliffdwellings and the gila hot springs the same day. Magical place that is actually like as little of people as possible to find out about. Part of its intrigue to go along with all of the beauty is that very few people know of it and there aren’t crowds. I live the headwaters of the gila. The cliff dwellings only have one way in and out via road though. You have to leave the same way you came. Eventually when leaving the road will allow you to continue on to silver city or turn towards the lake Roberts in the Mimbres valley. The Mimbres area is all a total hidden gem. Super happy to live here.
We had a great time in the area! Much of Mogollon was not open when we visited and the hot springs were also closed for the season during our visit. Hopefully we can check them out next time!
The artwork in Silver City is so pretty, and the coffee shop was amazingly eclectic! 😍 Really loved your exploration of the cliff dwellings. Interesting how you were allowed to do a self tour but weren't at Mesa Verde, I guess it doesn't get the same visitor numbers? Your night sky photos were really good, but I especially loved the one with the van in it! I think my favourite from this video has to have been the Catwalk. Reminds me a bit of the El Caminito del Rey in southern Spain - not that I've done it... had planned to but COVID cancelled that trip!
We do think Mesa Verde allows people to explore one dwelling on their own, but it was closed during our visit. The self guided, but have a ranger nearby, format is definitely our favorite! This spot was way less busy too, which was a huge perk. We loved the photo with the van in it too! Brisket looks like a star 🤩 Holy cow that spot in Spain looks EPIC! Adding that to the list!
We knew Doc and Ida Campbell when we were much younger (late 1970s). They were a sweet and charming couple. I hope their children and grand children are still there! Glad to see the Campbell store is still a going concern! Gila Cliff Dwellings is a wonderful place. We visited it on a number of occasions. So glad you had the opportunity to go!
I've been to Catwalk, was an unexpected treat. Thanks for the memories of that area of New Mexico. Loved your epic Milky Way photos. Hope you get to Chiricahua NM... amazing place.
Thanks for another wonderful video! Definitely your beautiful videos are a highlight in our lives! It was wonderful to see the Gila National Forest. This area is mentioned in Aldo Leopold's writings about conservation and we never been to this part of New Mexico!! Thanks again!!!
Hi there I’m so happy I found your channel! It’s nice knowing the history of the places you visit. Silver City New Mexico was very beautiful with the awesome hiking trails! Loved the scenery along the way! Thank you so much for sharing a little of your travel adventures! Happy and safe travels to you both! 😊

Lots of beautiful sights to see in that area. You guys captured it well and told great stories about various information points and historical locations!
Found this on random, but getting to see my hometown on screen is amazing! It honestly made me a little emotional watching you guys enjoy the very town that I love so dearly.
You two sweethearts know how to make a proper travelogue. Wish you the very best together, health and wisdom. You find sumptuous grooves! I truly hope there are little feet in your future.
You went into one of my favorite coffee shops. It looks like they have added more things on the inside. The outside garden is beautiful as well. Love silver city!
Hello Adventurers😊😊😊, I really enjoyed checking out the Gila Cliff Dwellings in New Mexico. It reminds me of my time at Mesa Verde National Park climbing down to the ruins. Gila seems to be less crowded. Great video👍👍👍👍!
From Buda, TX here 🙂 You guys are awesome. I love watching the videos where you're on the way to your destination. One of the best feelings as a Texan when going to the mountains is getting out of Texas and seeing the landscape change slowly. Gives me goosebumps. Looking forward to your journey to Alaska! Be safe ✌️
New Mexico is my new favorite state. And you're right--the people are the friendliest ever. Unfortunately, I live about 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and can only get there about once a year. Thanks for this vicarious trip to the Land of Enchantment.
We've really enjoyed our time in NM, though we haven't been in the SW area. The cliff dwellings looked really cool. Ha! Kathryn busting Adam's chops on this food descriptions. So funny! Adam, she's giving you grief, been smacking your butt.... sheesh!! LOL. The dark sky area looked amazing!!! Awesome photos! The catwalk looked tremendous!
If you ever make it back you need to check out Faywood Hotsprings and City of Rocks which is slightly southeast from here. Also, Pinos Altos has a wonderful place to enjoy dinner called the buckhorn which is quite the experience.
Thank you for the tips! We had wanted to check out some natural hot springs while in the area, but they were either closed or too far of a hike. Next time!
Luv you kids, glad to see you back on line. Hope your journey to Alaska takes you thru the Verde Valley of AZ, my stomping space. Maybe you'll visit Tuzigoot & hikes around Sedona
No Sedona this time unfortunately! Trying to prioritize new spots when we can since our schedule is so tight to get up to Alaska (5 months sounds long, but there is a lot to see!)
I've wondered what it'd be like to live in one those small towns, they were so peaceful looking. Here in Muskogee, we have nothing really; a nice park, and couple of museums is about all there is!! Take care guys!!!!
I lived in Silver City from 1949-1957. Grew up and went to school there. Lovely peaceful little town! I got my first job at the Gila theater at age 16 as a hostess and showed people to their seats after the show started. Saved enough money to buy my first “record player” as they were called them. It played 45 rpm records. I earned .50 cents an hour!
Great video. FYI - when people say you can't photograph the milky way in winter they're referring to the core which is the brightest part and most sought after by photographers but as you demonstrated the rest of the milky way is visible all year round and also very pretty!
Nicely done! Glad you got to spend some more time in our home state, New Mexico. There is so much to see and do here and most people have never heard of anything but Santa Fe. You should spend more time here and maybe do some backpacking up in the Pecos Wilderness which is the southern end of the Rocky Mountains. It is epic.
Well I hope y'all come back I live in silver City just on the outskirts. I live on 180 West which will take you from silver City to Cliff and buckhorn. There is so much more to explore like City of rocks it's closer to Deming but you could camp there and enjoy the natural Hot springs. Or you could go up like you're going to gila and go to Turkey Creek which is an old switchback road so hopefully you're not scared of heights like I am because I went there once and will never go again LOL. But it's so beautiful up that way that I want to go again but there are natural Hot springs up that way too there is so much more to explore here and I haven't seen everything I've lived here for 6 years I'm glad you came to our area and I loved your video
There is so much to do! We really wanted to visit some hot springs, but the easy ones were closed and the harder ones were too long of a hike. But we look forward to coming back!
I recently discovered your channel while researching an upcoming trip to Southern Utah, and learned so much from all the places you went last year and all the things you filmed. You guys are awesome - your videos are the perfect mix of informative and entertaining. Keep doing what you're doing, and I hope you have an amazing Journey to Alaska. I'll be along for the ride!

We really wanted to visit Jordan hot springs, but it was just too far of a trek for us this time. Hopefully in the future!
Before you visit the hot springs, make sure you carry water! I ended up dehydrated because of rhe heat.

❤️💙 Hola! We can’t wait to visit Spain one day!
I love that you loved our little town of Silver City! ❤

Sooo worth the trek! The drive is gorgeous too!

Thanks for doing our travel planning for us. We are also headed to AK this summer. Currently in Dripping Springs Texas.
Awesome! Safe travels to y'all!
You went into one of my favorite coffee shops. It looks like they have added more things on the inside. The outside garden is beautiful as well. Love silver city!
We loved the coffee shop so much!
Particularly enjoyed your Milky Way photos. Thank you for sharing. Agreed - it's never too cold for ice cream.
We are so glad you enjoyed them! It was cold taking them hahah
I love how you always give some history on the areas you are visiting. Oh, and that Guinness Beef Stew looked so yumee and comfortingee.
It was delicious!
That was amazing! Those photos are beautiful!
Thank you! ❤️
Thank you for your wonderful views and reviews of our area❤️
Of course! ❤️
Great stuff! I loved the artwork in Silver City. I bet the ruins were fun, and the night sky was awesome! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your trip. 👍
We loved all of the art there too! Always brightens up a town!
I'm digging the new intro! Great astro pics too! That would be such a cool experience to be out under the stars. 🌌
We’re so glad you like the intro! You’ll be seeing it for many months to come haha
you got a nice shot of the Andromeda galaxy there on your night photos... nice video... :)
Hello Adventurers😊😊😊, I really enjoyed checking out the Gila Cliff Dwellings in New Mexico. It reminds me of my time at Mesa Verde National Park climbing down to the ruins. Gila seems to be less crowded. Great video👍👍👍👍!
The entire region was way less crowded and we loved that about it!
Great scenery and photography…love New Mexico…I’m ready for ice cream now…thanks for bringing it!!
New Mexico is such a beautiful state!
Wow!! Those photos look incredible!!! So amazing! So spectacular!!
Thank you so much!
Be safe ✌️
We know and love that feeling! It has been awesome to see mountains and new scenery!
Another awesome video. Thanks for the great info!!
New Mexico is my new favorite state. And you're right--the people are the friendliest ever. Unfortunately, I live about 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and can only get there about once a year. Thanks for this vicarious trip to the Land of Enchantment.
We are so glad you love NM! Where are your favorite spots in the state?
@@AdventuresofAplusK Taos. Santa Fe, and surrounding areas.
That definitely was the Milky Way! Great shots of it. Thanks for sharing this fun trip 😃
Thank you! Was so excited to get to see it! Hoping to do a Timelapse video of it next time 😄
We've really enjoyed our time in NM, though we haven't been in the SW area.
Just gotta keep his renowned food descriptions in check! 😜😜
Alaska...take your time and enjoy!
Next time!
Next time you guys come through Las Cruces, let me treat you to a coffee at Picacho or our other favorite local roaster, Becks! :-)
Oh so cool. Glad you could make it to SW NM. Too bad it was cold....there is a swimming hole at Catwalk. Safe travels. Dan, T or C, NM
While we were there we were saying how it would be fun in the summer!
Thanks for giving us so many great ideas!
Hello, hello from Puerto Rico , first time to see your videos, excellent presentation, thanks, good job
Thank you for watching!
I've wondered what it'd be like to live in one those small towns, they were so peaceful looking. Here in Muskogee, we have nothing really; a nice park, and couple of museums is about all there is!! Take care guys!!!!
It definitely seems like a peaceful way of life!
I live in silver city nm, was raised out here and tho it is absolute beautiful and charming it is very corrupt and high in crime and drugs.
I lived in Silver City from 1949-1957. Grew up and went to school there. Lovely
peaceful little town! I got my first job at the Gila theater at age 16 as a hostess and showed people to their seats after the show started. Saved enough money to buy my first “record player” as they were called them. It played 45 rpm records. I earned .50 cents an hour!
I grew up there. Made me miss it. I need to visit soon!
My hometown♥️. Come back in the summer some time, and do some hiking. The Mountains of the SW are magical, to me. Hope you had a good time!
We'd love to go backpacking out in the Gila Wilderness!
Great video. FYI - when people say you can't photograph the milky way in winter they're referring to the core which is the brightest part and most sought after by photographers but as you demonstrated the rest of the milky way is visible all year round and also very pretty!
That is good to know! Thank you for the insight!
The cliff dwellings were so cool!
It is epic.
We definitely want to spend more time! A lot of spots we wanted to visit were too north for this trip, but we will be back 😃
@@AdventuresofAplusK well, when you do let us know.. June-Sept we go backpacking a lot and would love to take you.
Ya'll's videos are looking so crisp and sharp and those astro photos are siiiiiiiick! Nice job!
Thank you David! I’m going to give credit to our new camera set up!
@@AdventuresofAplusK What is it? And did you get a new drone as well? Footage looks crispy and tight.
@@AdventuresofAplusK Never mind. Just saw your blog post.
We wish the drone was new! That’s still on the upgrade list for this year, as well as a zoom lens for Alaska
Thank you so much for watching Michael and for the kind words!
Very cool. I'm going to put that on my bucket list. Love it. Always time to ice cream 🍦 😋
Always!
Love the reference to living in a van down by the river lol!
What a spectacular adventure. I really enjoy your channel. Be safe!
