That drive looked well worth it to get to the Gila Cliff Dwellings! $15 for full hook-up - Not bad. We just paid $75 per night at a full hook-up camp in Fort Bragg, Ca. 😏 Copper mining sure messes up the land. In Northern Chile, it wiped out the marine life along the coast where the copper mining was done. Piñon Altos looked like such a cool little town! Definitely. Flagstaff, Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments, and even Sedona isn't far off your route. There's enough to fill a couple of weeks in there.
If we're aware of an out-of-state surcharge we'll mention it. We typically only see that in state parks, however, and in the case of Lake Roberts it's a US Forest Service campground.
The old buildings at Pinos Altos are incredible! Free dinner, that's unheard of! Glad I had a second look at your video to pay closer attention to the details. :D

I'm glad I found this YT. I'll be heading to the Silver City area in about 5 weeks in my 24ft motorhome. My plan was to drive up to the Gila Cliff Deweling in the motorhome and then head back through Mimbres. After your description of the drive to Dewelings, I'm wondering if my motorhome may be too long. What do you think?
Definitely take 35 in from Mimbres, and not 15 up from Silver City. I'd think you'd be ok by taking 35, as the really tight road is south of the 35/15 intersection.
Marc. I lived in Silver City from 1960 to 1969 as a teenager, Loved this area. as I had a cycle and rode all over it. One of my old girlfriends-Karen and her husband own the museum in Pinos Altos. So much history here.

Mark my wife and I towed our 26’ camper on that hyw from Silver City to the Gila National Monument area. If was very tight on those hairpin turns. We camped across the street from those hot springs and they are all family on both places. We also stopped at the City of Rocks, it’s an amazing sight to see.
I was wondering how this climb might be like towing. As I have a similar setup; Chevy 2500 4x4 and 26' InTech Terra Oasis Rover version, I was looking at Forks Campground as a base camp for exploring Gila, hot springs... Probably best way to ask this is, would you take this route again?
@@johneskrich362 it's doable, but the question is would it be advisable? The grades are nothing, but the road is very narrow with zero shoulder and very many hairpin turns. Were I you I'd take NM-35 from San Lorenzo past Lake Roberts, and thereby avoid the worst of NM-15 between Lake Roberts and Silver City.
@@GrandAdventure check out the Black Range on 152 between Hanover and Hillsboro. Hillsboro is a funky little mountian/desert transition town as well as Kingston. There’s an awesome “secret” Canyon along that route. Organ Mtns just East of Las Cruces arent to be missed. Good boondocking up in the Datil Mtns as well
I have only spent a brief time in New Mexico. It is such an incredible place. It is a place where wild west technically ends, rocky mountains end, plains begin and I have nothing to show for it, lol. 2 blown tires, 1 cracked windshield, 2 dead gopros and a horrible night on I-40 in abequerque. I hope on my next visit to spend quality time there. I got close to ruins while in Durango but pointed wheels east. Never got to see lakes because weather was horrible both ways. Watching this video gives me hope. Awesome storytelling as always.

We didn't find any hot springs in the immediate area. It's not to say they don't exist, we just didn't find them. City of Rocks does charge per night, but I don't recall the amount. Best to check their website.
There are free hot springs but they are up in the Gila Wilderness so you have to hike up to them. The hot springs by City of Rocks use to be free but a lot of hippies were making a mess of them and some people even died there

Great experience in viewing the Silver City video....I have always wanted to travel to this section of the state of New Mexico even though we travel each year to Taos. Some of my grandparents have history in the area and it would be great to continue to explore the area. This video was excellent! Very entertaining and a good way to spend a rainy afternoon.

We were in NM on our trip this summer. We made a stop at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. It was an amazing time and my kids were amazed. Once again, thank you Marc for such a great, inspiring video.

When I was a kid my grandfather had a ranch over and lake Roberts was on his ranch and so were the Gila Cliff Dwellings I loved that ranch.

Great video, it's just amazing how those cliff dwellings have survived all these years, silver city looks like an interesting place too, the campground was very nice, the food looked very good, now we have the itch to get back on the road, but we just got back a couple weeks ago, oh well that's life, 😀 travel safe Marc

Imagine our delight to come home and find that while we were in SW New Mexico you posted a video of our trip! You got that right George! As I just mentioned to another commenter, we typically don't know what we're going to see/film until we get somewhere. Silver City delivered.
We were in NM on our trip this summer. We made a stop at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. It was an amazing time and my kids were amazed. Once again, thank you Marc for such a great, inspiring video.

I've been wanting to get to Silver City, now it is a must stop. It is also a certified Dark Sky area, great for star gazing.
