Mario 64’s Worst Water Stage: Jolly Roger Bay Vs Dire Dire Docks | Level By Level
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 чер 2024
- Super Mario 64 has a large variety of different stages, some of which being some of the most unique in the entire series. However, due to this being the first 3D Mario game, a few themes had to be repeated. This includes the water theme which is seen in jolly roger bay and dire dire docks. These are also often seen as some of the worst stages in the game. So in today’s episode of Level By LEvel we are going to compare jrb and ddd together to see which is Mario 64’s WORST water stage? We’ll also be putting each of their levels stars into a tier list!

Pros: Really makes you FEEL like drowning
Cons: Too Much Water

Too much water
Pro: Good Music
Cons: needs more cowbell
I like how SM64DS improves the first star of Jolly Roger Bay, where the Eel will just come out when you get close to it, instead of having to leave and then come back
oh, phew, i thought i was having a mandela effect
And not only that. There's an added Green Shell and Blue coins, plus the jet stream is stronger now.
@@fraquero3192 I think between that, and a very early Prima-published Tips & Tricks book (that didn't even know the localized world names), I tricked myself into thinking this was how the original 64 version worked.
I really wish the sub in Dire Dire Docks was used more. If we could go inside and fight a boss, that would be WAY cooler than just climbing the sub. Makes the name “Board Bowser’s Sub” inaccurate. Also, that STUPID HOLE THAT SENDS YOU OUTSIDE THE CASTLE. I want to love this level more; it has so much potential
15:30 pannenkoek explained that the rings geometry is buggy so it is not only your imagination
The difference is, Jolly Roger Bay is an iconic setting with a great and haunting atmosphere, multiple adventurous setpieces, an use of adaptive music that is still breathtaking (eg. that moment you first dive under the water surface while the mist hasn't cleared yet), mostly inoffensive gameplay that is a relaxing break from all the usual platforming, that one eel that is an absolute legend...
And Dire Dire Docks has it going for it that it is a very dire pit that also has a dock. It also has the music being named after it for some reason.
Jolly roger bay is much better than dire dire docks imo
DDD must be a nepo baby cause no way in hell does it deserve to be the name of the song instead of JRB
@@thejedisonic67
Apparently in Japanese it’s just called “Water Land”
So it won by being so generic that it describes both levels
@@sumthinorother9615 Waterworld actually, not that that's much better lmao
Even though I'm not too big a fan these 2 levels, I must admit, they have the single best song in the game right next to Staff Roll, it's just so comforting for me that I seriously gotta give them props.
Agreed. I may not care for these levels. But the music is some of the best underwater music of any video games. Right up there with Aquatic Ambience from Donkey Kong Country, Bubblaine from Odyssey, Cosmic Clove from Galaxy 2 & more.
I would argue its one of the most iconic music pieces in all of gaming
Dire dire docks vs Jolly Roger bay: which flavour of poison would you rather chug?
jolly Roger bay
I would rather have it jolly roger bay flavored but both are gonna kill me
I always had a soft spot for these levels personally! Although swimming is definitely tedious in this game, the atmosphere, music and theme always won me over lol!
Hi Albert Boris!
Hello!
Hello!
Dire Dire Docks has one of my favorite songs in the whole game
i heard that in your voice
Everyone knows Wet Dry World is the clear winner amongst water levels in this game
One of my favorite levels in the game
Unless you’re Nicobbq
I dread going there tbh
This, but unironically
Honestly, I was expecting someone to hate on Wet-Dry World in the comments but was surprised to see the love for that course. Wet-Dry World is on my Favorite levels! I’ll be honest, I love all the levels especially the water levels. If I have to choose a particular level that’s my favorite it would be Hazy Maze Cave! (I love Jolly Roger Bay and Dire, Dire Docks both the same)!!!
Fun fact! The manta ray star is just broken. The ring's visual is rotated correctly, but the rotation for the hitbox swapped 2 of the axes. This means sometimes they line up (like with through the jet stream) but other times its completely perpendicular. Always swim through the dead center to avoid missing a ring.

holy shit we finally got a video that is moderately shorter than the others
odyssey is finally understanding how to not yap as much
What are you talking about
18:43 Moral: Mario 64 does a good job at Swimming but the levels weren’t done well.
The people who chose this over Cool Cool mountain and Snowman’s land don’t believe in winter
What's winter
Idk why i was so terrified by the most stupid stuff in this game, like Scuttlebugs or the DAMN GIANT HOLE ON DIRE DIRE DOCKS, seriously, that entrance for the submarine used to be one of the most horrifying things ever
Bro so it wasn't just me who used to be scared of that hole??!!!!!!
One thing you can’t argue though, Jolly Roger Bay would make for a great mario kart track
(at least for the theming)
For sure! Although the music would perhaps have to be re-worked into something more frantic...
ALBERT BORING WTF
Jolly Roger Bay: *Creepy Aesthetic*
Dire Dire Docks: *Joyful Aesthetic*
15:21 The manta rings are actually bugged, their actual orientation often doesn't match their visual orientation (sometimes by as much as a full 90 degrees). Pannenkoek has a video showcasing this on his uncommentated channel.
Bro the big hole in the 2nd area of Dire Dire docks used to terrify me when I was younger. I used to think somethin crazy like a bunch of unagis would come out of it
Hot take: Jolly Roger Bay is overhated.
The music and eel definitely carry most of the enjoyment factor for me, but I've never had any issue with swimming throughout the level. The low level of hazards help to give it this ominous, yet comforting vibe as you go through the water -so long as you're not playing as Wario in the DS remake.- I also enjoy the environmental storytelling where the drab gray sky lightens up a little after getting the first star, but still keeps the semi-eerie atmosphere throughout the rest of the level. I know people like to hate on water levels, but I've never had an issue with this one.
Dire Dire Docks though... at least it's better than Rainbow Ride. :^)
hello fellow beefy die fan
I agree. JRB is fun. DDD is repetitive
Finally, a video less than 20 minutes! Odyssey is finally doing his job!
Passive Aggressive lol
9:36 I don't know why but for some reason the way you said "There's a box" just be cracking up and playing that part repeatedly
i had no idea those 5 coins in DDD existed and i've been playing this game my entire life
I like the swimming levels. They're so calming and chill. It's a nice break from the platforming.

Level By Level comparing the 64 worlds vs 64 DS worlds could be interesting
Graduated from college today and we get a Wet-Dry World video, my dinner is gonna be incredible!
Love how weird this place is!!!
Thought about making a ranking level for all of the original levels that were made for Mario 64 DS. They all aren't normal level sized, but I think there's some interesting ideas for a few of them, given that the DS version came out almost a decade after the original
6:50 This really confused and frustrated me when I played for the first time in 3D All Stars. The DS version has the eel swim out in front of you like you'd expect, and I've played SM64DS countless times since I was like 7 years old so it felt so weirdly counter intuative to swim away in the og version
I love how you edit your videos! I always laugh at every reference or funny thig that you edited in, great work :DD
I love the atmosphere of Jolly Roger Bay. The sunken ship that you raise up, the eel, the pirate treasure, the mist. It feels very mysterious and cool with a strong theme.
Dire Dire Docks is a boring chore.
Your Level by Level series, along with the Deep Dives into Sunshine levels another UA-camr is doing, are some of my favorite videos.
Please, never stop! These are GOLD!
"I don't hate the star that much"
**puts star at the bottom of tier list**
Odyssey finally did a short vid 😂
Honestly, between your editing, delivery, sense of humor, and amazing content I’m always shocked you’re not at 1mil.. can’t wait to see you get there 😁
Even though I like all the courses in the game, my vote for the weakest goes to Dire Dire Docks. It's really small and doesn't have much going for it, plus swimming through the tunnel 5 or so times quickly gets tedious.
I needed something to watch while on the beach thank you
Just have him drink the water 🤦🏿♂️
🧠
From my perspective as a speedrunner, I consider DDD to be the worst stage in the game by a landslide. It definitely has some competition from Rainbow Ride, but it really robs the game of most of what makes it interesting, and unlike JRB, it fails to make up for that with a particularly interesting aesthetic or memorable stars.
They both have very similar issues on the gameplay side, but among the casual playerbase, *everyone* remembers the Unagi, or the sunken ship, or the treasure hidden in the cave behind those super intimidating falling pillars.
Besides the sub, does any casual player ever think, "Oh, yeah! Dire Dire Docks! I loved the two separate stars whose entire gameplay gimmick is to grab the metal cap, which is a rehash from JRB in the first place!"
There's also the Manta Ring star, which is literally glitched in an incredibly unintuitive and frustrating way. And while not an issue for casual players, any speedrunner will tell you how DDD100 + Reds is *SUPER* difficult. Potentially the hardest star in the game.
All my homies hate DDD
I disagree I think both water levels are amazing, they really make you feel thalassophobia and fear of drowning, while at the same time instilling wonder and awe in your heart, sure the swimming is slow and not precise, but it makes everything even more suspenseful and intense, specially because oxygen is running out, I love it.
As the one dire dire docks fan, I get why people hate it. But when I think about it, I always think of the time I tried to skip pressing the switch by wall jumping to the pole platforms. I distinctly remember being proud of myself when I did it.
I’ll always think of those times instead of the tunnel. I also loved thinking about how bowser could’ve infiltrated the castle through the hole in dire dire docks.
i was expecting a foxy jumpscare when you said "spooky" at 2:03
I adore Jolly Roger Bay. Part of it is because I’ve had a personal passion for swimming underwater ever since I was a kid. The music and colors make JRB just magical and very relaxing to play in.
the eel perfectly growls at me and leaves the ship's window just fine whenever I get to that point.
7.5/10 too much water
I will literally watch wathever you upload, I'm addicted
The eel terrified me but having Boos show up in the castle and the picture that changes from Peach to Bowser were just as freaky.

@Odyssey Central: In Super mario 64 DS plunder in the sunkin ship they fix that issue by making the eal leave the ship when your near by, but since by then you will be almost out of air, they change the inside of the ship to just one chest to open because of that reason. The Ds also make the rest easier by making the slop walkable, unlike the N64 version you have to swim to the box before it drain, or else your going to have a really hard time to get up there unless you know about crawling, or you spam jump kick in the case of speed running.
Too much water

Rant time, haaaa, DIRE DIRE DOCS ISNT GARBO because the song, it feels like the donkey Kong water song, it’s just so calming I love it, it feels like the 2000s of the nostalgia, btw thb who am I to say I was only born 14 years ago, like it feels like it belongs in a liminal space com, and I love how scary it is, but I get scared if someone sings RICKROLL IN A DARK AREA, yeah I’m a wimpy kid, but also the green it feels like when you turn down the render thingy, and also water tastes good so that’s why I love the level, oh god is this comment long, YOU BETTER READ THIS ODD IS HE CENSORED, and also the ohnogy guy scared me even tho it was Mario galaxy which scared me, also now that I’m yapin about Mario galaxy I remember when I was 6 and deleted my brothers save file in 2015, oh yeah I played Mario galaxy in 2015 because that Minecraft and pvz were the only games I had, like the comment reply sub to odyssey central or I’m throwing my cult of the lamb fan made Lego kit at you
I've played and replayed Mario 64 a bunch of times since the 90's. And I did not know until TODAY that Dire Dire Docks had a line of 5 coins at the top!
wait. there's a line of coins at the beginning of ddd? I didn't even know that💀
also, something about ddd
You may have noticed a considerable frame drop in the Submarine room when it’s present.
Well, Nintendo decided to make the sub’s collision *DYNAMIC* instead of *STATIC* like the rest of the collision in the game.
(jolly roger bay 100 coin star) oh boy, lemme tell ya about my experience with this one.
When I was a kid, I was going for this star, and ended up spending maybe an hour just swimming around JRB stuck at 99 coins, looking for ONE more coin and couldn't find it. I ended up checking on super mario wiki to see it, only to find out that because I missed the one blue coin, I had to restart. needless to say I do not like that star to this day
Wait...
People think Jolly Roger Bay is creepy?
And bad?
What rock have I been undee my entire life?
I always saw this a serene mysterious level with beauty ans soothing music.
One of my favorites in the game.
16:40 i love how u used the new minecraft music here
@Odyssey Central: In Super mario 64 DS in dire dire dock, it is just called inside the cage, since it is impossible to have metal and vanish cap ability at the same time, since Wario have the Meta ability and Luigi got the vanish ability. But why the hint of collecting both the metal cap and vanish cap, two reason why your metal it will take less time to reach the cage since when you land on the see floor you can move quicker also the other reason is to avoid getting suck out, if you don't align properly with just the vanish cap you will get suck right out and appear outside the castle in the water near the wood bridge, meaning you will have to walk back to the front of the castle if the water is not drain yet, just to go back at the start of the basement just to swim back to that anyoing tunnell, in the Ds version since you are force into using vanish only the getting suck out is less strong.
I would like to have a video on some more of the later game stages like Tall Tall Mountain and Tiny Huge Island. For one reason or another (mainly because I haven’t tried to complete Mario 64 much), but I often forget these stages even exist sometimes.
A water mobility power up/cap would’ve made these bangers.
I think you could maybe take into account the order youre supposed to go through these levels. For example Jolly Roger has very basic and simple stars which could seem dull but its meant to be one of the earliest levels so it's basic by design while Dire Dire is going to have a lot trickier platforming and tricks and it's going to be more engaging.
damn for once this isn't like "ranking every texture in mario 64"
I always get nervous anytime I just look at that giant hole from Dire Dire Docks. Why is it even there? What purpose does it serve? It is actually the only thing I remember about DDD.
OC, if you really want to play as Dry Bones, forget Smash Bros. and play Mario Kart DS, Mario party 8, Super Mario Party, and/or Mario Tennis Aces. Those games are better.
Here's another good video idea: Ranking all main members of the Kong family.
The giant hole is actually for Bowser's sub to enter and exit through. It doesn't open until after you grab the star from the sub and it leaves.
Congrats odyssey! This is only 19 minutes and 57 seconds and not 20!
That’s probably why 64 DS version of Jolly Roger Bay have 128 coins for whatever reason but it still doesn’t change the fact that it a water level
I honestly prefer DDD over JRB
question: how would you rank the the jet stream stars, and collect the caps by doing them the intended way instead of exploits/ tricks?
Huh, but snow is water. Doesn't that mean that there's actually 4 water levels? Or 5 if we count Wet Dry World?
YOU PICK UP THE KOOPA SHELLS?!? I ALWAYS JUST HOP ON THEM AND SURF AROUND WITH THEM.
Meanwhile me loving these levels with my soul: 😭❤
6:36 WTF??? I have memories of the eel jolting forward at your if you get close enough, swerves its head around, and slowly slithers out. Was that memory wrong? LOL wtf, I see it clear as day in my mind. Edit: maybe I'm thinking of the other eel star, but I SWEAR I remember it with the ship too. hahaha
I literally had no idea that grabbing Koopa shells underwater was a mechanic until like a decade ago when I saw it show up in romhacks. I could never get Mario to grab them when I played on console and just assumed it was a little Easter egg of showing that clams are predators of Koopa Troopas.
Would Wet Dry World count as one of the water levels?
You should check out the red coin mission in the mario stage in 64ds. Its a similar concept to the collect the caps star.
I know this is random, but can you make a video about the Satellaview?
10:00
Missed cool Bowser opportunity
Guess it really wasn't cool enough for him...
i'd say rainbow ride is better because at the very least you CAN skip the boring parts with difficult jumps but in the water stages you're forced to swim for prolonged periods of time
if you wanna be objective about it though i'd say all 3 stages deserve to be right next to each other in D Tier
I think it's a missed opportunity to not mention 64 DS differences in every aspect
This is cool and all, but we need comparison on Piranha Plant Slide, Piranha Plant Cove, and Piranha Plant Pipeline. Petey Piranha would be proud
I thought that i was the only one who thought that Dire Dire Docks was a little eerie.
I have a suggestion for the level by level a Mario 3d evolved game and you talk about and how they evolved from then to now
Honestly it says a lot about my hate for Mario 64's swimming mechanics that I put every Roger Bay star in F tier 😁
I don't know why but I love Jolly Roger Bay. The water makes me feel safe. I don't know.. Maybe because you can just go back to the surface and get full health.
The hitboxes on the rings from the manta ray are misaligned via rotation. Going through the middle is your best chance on making them count.
The sad part about the tunnel that it’s required due to it being a way to unload one zone and load the other. And even then, the second zone is a bit laggy when the sub is in view due to there being too many triangles.
Dire Dire Docks definitely needed more work.
Dire Dire Docks is the one SM64 level I wish got cut. Funny enough, the first time I got that 100 coin star those coins at the top of the pool where the last ones I found.
I actually quite enjoy Jolly Roger Bay although the limited coins on the level is a bit cheeky. And Dire Docks always kinda feels like a chore to get through for me.
We finaly got a short video before the BIG video
random but you should do more livestreams again, i remember watching them in the day
Yeah, I think I do prefer Jolly Roger Bay out of these two levels.
I particularly dislike the hole that takes you outside the castle in Dire Dire Docks. I mean, not only is it doing that pretty annoying to begin with, but the current that sucks you into it is entirely invisible. Also, yeah, the empty tunnel in Dire Dire Docks sucks. The least they could do if they're going to make you swim a long time to get somewhere is put something interesting within the path you have to take, rather than leave it completely empty.
Another thing I'll mention is that I don't like the chest stars in these levels. Just randomly guessing the chests until you open them in the right order doesn't really add any challenge. It just makes it an annoying trial-and-error process. I think they should've made it so opening all of them, regardless of what order you open them in, makes the star appear. You would still have to be careful of the current in the whirlpool star, but you wouldn't have to constantly swim back up for air over and over until you open them in the right order. Also, the fact that this concept is reused three times in this game is a bit lame.
Maybe I'm just a hater, but I honestly don't like the majority of SM64's level designs, but one of the exceptions for me is Jolly Roger Bay. It's simple but in a good way. It isn't a random cube in a skybox, it feels like it could be a real place. The 1st section is short, so getting to the pillars via the cannon, or up to the platforms to board the ship is quick and easy, and anything else you could need to do is located in the only other poi, the big deep section that's just beyond. The tunnel to the cave is really cool, as a kid I always imagined the kind of amazing adventure that some pirates must've taken to leave their chests there. The sunken ship and eel are a simple concept but make the level stand out significantly. The music is lovely. Really the only big issue I have is how slow Mario swims, but since I grew up with SM64DS, as soon as you unlock Luigi, swimming is a breeze. (just like literally everything, why did they make him a god in that game? 😂)
Trys to make a shorter video and it still is almost 20 ish minutes
Wet-Dry World is sweating after this video released
Maybe its because I only played the ds version as a kid, but jolly roger bay has always been one of my favourites. Surprised to hear most people don't like it
Sweet stuff
Yeah after the 2D mario levels ranking you should do a fnaf video
when I was young, I was creeped out by JRB and didn't play the level for years. Now it doesn't bother me but it's still creepy.
Well I admit even nowdays the drowning animation in M64 give me heebie jeebies and I am someone who can watch RE games without getting jumpscared once
@@theenderkirby939 if you think the M64 drowning animation is scary, you should look up the Tonic Trouble poison drowning. It makes M64 look cute in comparison!
Well, the ddd tunnel actually has a purpose, its the loading zone for the second area
