PS2 has this file "seabed" wich controls the render distance wich was very low in the ps2 version (longer in the og PC version). This would make the sun appear bigger and the objects like trees will render even at lower distances wich contributed to make the world to appear bigger than it was. The trilogy doesn't use that file for the render distance, since now that is handled by unreal engine, the only solution is to use fog wich is not the same. It makes all look foggy but still an upgrade.

We've seen some comprehensive videos on the new patch, but it's really great to see a "vibe cheak" video to see all of the returning weather effects. Fantastic work, as always. Los Santos has a really cozy feel late at night with the big moon. It's good to see it back. Overall, the original generally looks slightly better in terms of the environment & vibe, with classic lighting on. But it's very well implemented generally. With this patch, I think I ever-so-slightly prefer how Las Ventures looks now, ESPECIALLY at night, the original lighting & sky, with the new textures, 3D signs/billboards, and updated building LEDs, work so well together imo. And since we don't have many modern titles set in Las Vegas, it's awesome to see that refined look.
The graphics without the classic lighting looks alright the only problem is the draw distance They should add the fog to the normal lighting as well it will look so much better and also increase the fog's density too or give us the option to choose the fog density
They did add fog with new lighting, you can’t see SF from LS, and you can’t see LS from the desert, the only thing you can really see is mount chilliand from all the cities, which honestly looks fine to me
I completely agree! The default lighting is great, but there should be an option to add fog, and the rain and sandstorm effects should be improved in the default lighting as well.
The pre patch version looks more realistic but not as "artistic". Honestly I think the classic lighting overdoes it. The only other main gripe for me still is the character models look infinitely worse than the original in all cases, let’s hope there not done making changes and updates
I honestly like the farther draw distance, I like being able to see a good part of the city, not just a block in front of me. The lack of effects before the patch just made it look ugly and bland. The newer effects look better while maintaining a farther draw distance.
Another UA-camr said that the controls were simplified for smartphones and then brought to consoles, making some tasks too easy, so they still need to restore that.
It's beyond crazy it took Rockstar 3 years to fix the joke they launched with the definitive edition. This company makes millions per day. It would take a small team of programmers maybe a few weeks if not days to get right
Idk how people like the PS2 lighting everything looks so orange it hurts my eyes that’s why I say people are driven by nostalgia, maybe because I didn’t play the PS2 version I don’t consider it good. I like that they gave u an option to choose between the lighting and I am sticking with the lighting from the DE, I can always switch it to the classic if I want
I was born after gta sa was released and i have never played the ps2 version and i can say that it looks way better than the pc and xbox versions which didnt have orange lighting and the classic lighting is so awesome cuz now i can experince what i have never gotten to experince before it really was bland and soulless
this really goes to show the power of emulation, emulation pretty much remasters classic games as is, retaining almost all of what made classic games gorgeous for the time while adding the resolution our eyes need these days, emulation is awesome. Glad to see they have given the definitive edition some love though, it needed it and now i might buy it.
@@Lordicus21 Why? The map is very small, the fog helps hide the fact that you can see the major cities from many parts where you really shouldn't. Good LOD or not.
Maybe it's just me that works in actual film production but the new sunset in looks overexposed and almost leaving a "hotspot" on screen. The old is very subtle and still impactful - real cinematography.
I still think the originals look a little better. The new super detailed textures don’t work that well with the simplistic yet exaggerated 3D models and animations of the game. I would still consider the post-patch version of the def edition to be completely enjoyable though.
I still think the lighting could be better with less of the UE4 look and more of a stylized yet more modern lighting look than it has but this is a massive improvement
I think as someone who hasn't a "nostalgia" view on this game the classic lighting in the definitive edition is good now. I don't think the game needs a draw distance of 2m and a wall of bright orange fog like in the original. Remember that definitive edition is a "enhanced" version of the original and not a 1:1 copy. It should be modernized with the feel of the original.
I think this proves how important lighting is in cinematic videogames. It completely changes the vibe one has playing them. Batman Arkham Knight is a great example of this, it has such great lighting, it STILL looks like a modern AAA game that could've launched this year...and still would look better than almost everything!
Drawn distance is worse in the PS2 for buildings yet better for cars...crazy how in the trilogy you still can't see cars from too far in a new gen console, in fact it's worse.
Im still amazed how modern hardware needs LODs for a 2004 game. If anything they should be able to instantly load the entire San Andreas map at once with maximum LOD.
oh cool they fixed the GTA remakes that released earlier this yea- 'It's been a hair over 3 years since the Grand Theft Auto trilogy the definitive edition launched' WHAT
The llighting might be unrealistic but it looks sooooo good. Kinda has the same effect like the Red Dead 1 Ragdolls compared to Red Dead 2. They are way more unrealistic, but funnier in every aspect
You can get the PS2 Graphics back to 2005 PC Port with mods like SkyGFX and files from PS2, it look very good and can take advantage of mods to make it look even better nowdays.
It would be such a small change but making the game ground a little darker in the rural areas and San Fierro would pretty much make the new lighting perfect This is the only thing that is bothering me, how “bright” the game looks when the original was very dark (sometimes to the point where the characters were just a silhouette lol) Great patch nevertheless, they pretty much nailed the atmosphere of those “welcome to the 80’s” gta videos that people offered compared to the remasters
Maybe this is just me but as someone who played the originals ever since I was 6 back in the day I actually enjoy the definitive version more now than the originals don’t get me wrong the originals will always be so nostalgic for me but I prefer these newer versions I’ll still play both depending on the mood
Jeez didn't remember the ps2 version looking that bad it's like there was a sky wall of fog right in front of you that blinded you jusy so you couldn't see anything in the distance. The new patch of the DE really did a great job
I think this happened because Rockstar finally had the resources to dedicate to fixing this thing. They were all hands on deck for GTA 6, but not that it's largely in Q/A and Bug Testing, I am so grateful they managed to get some people to fix GSG's mess. Going forward, I can imagine they're going to keep making small fixes/tweaks to these games. Any future ports are probably just going to be handled by Double Eleven, and they would be just that, ports.
I do regret playing the DE triology last year to completion as i don't fancy going through them again so soon, i had good time with them, they were (mostly) bug free when i played, but i wish i could have driven around a more grimey liberty city in my play through. Tried driving around on my completed save but keep getting shot at by the gang members ive antagonised 😂
I think they actually did a very reasonable job balancing the draw distance & the fog. I think being able to see the top of Mt chilliad isn't a bad thing either. Having some landmarks just barely there in the fog makes it look more "filled". Too bad the actual LOD's are still far below the original games "not great" LOD's. 😅
Looks good... A classic/remastered option for the physics would be nice (better car physics/euphoria ragdoll). If R* really wanted to outdo themselves they could pass the city maps through their asset teams and clean up the PS2 era geometry. Other than that... NPC and vehicle draw distance could probably be improved and there's some kind of spectral map from the sun thats still present in shadows that irks me. :p
So glad i played san andreas with sky gfx on pc. I especially loved sky gfx (ps2 weather colors mod) in the desert day time its yeallow and night time its purple, but the original pc version of og san andreas had day time in white sky and night just dark green which looked awful, and the trilogy remaster looked even worse, thank god they added classic lighting back. But they could of kept the night clouds on cuase they looked pretty good in my opinion and also i heard that vice city night sky looks much better without the classic lighting because classic lighting disables clouds.

So seeing this update I think I'll finally cop The Definitive Edition. Only downside is the missing songs but luckily I only care about Billie Jean and Runnin Down a Dream. Are you an artist? I love how you describe the scenes.
The only other main gripe for me still is the character models look infinitely worse than the original in all cases, let’s hope there not done making changes and updates
@DanRan98 Oh true
I honestly like the farther draw distance, I like being able to see a good part of the city, not just a block in front of me.
The lack of effects before the patch just made it look ugly and bland. The newer effects look better while maintaining a farther draw distance.
yeah I can see that but it breaks immersion for me at the edge of the city being able to see stuff that should be so far
Yeah, it breaks the illusion of scale
If only we could get the missing music back though
Another UA-camr said that the controls were simplified for smartphones and then brought to consoles, making some tasks too easy, so they still need to restore that.
It's beyond crazy it took Rockstar 3 years to fix the joke they launched with the definitive edition.
This company makes millions per day. It would take a small team of programmers maybe a few weeks if not days to get right
GTA 6? y’all mfs keep forgetting that plus they had to deal with GSG and get them out the way this is take two fault not rockstar
Classic lightning really makes it look more like the original game
Ty sir I've been searching for this video and i never find one until now
Thanks for the comparison, this is the type of video I was looking for.
Dude if it released like this, it would had been amazing.
Glad to see it in its current state.
such an awesome comparison video
this really goes to show the power of emulation, emulation pretty much remasters classic games as is, retaining almost all of what made classic games gorgeous for the time while adding the resolution our eyes need these days, emulation is awesome. Glad to see they have given the definitive edition some love though, it needed it and now i might buy it.
How tf did I ever play this game on day 1 release!
Brings back memories. Also kinda reminds me of Halloween weather on gta 5
They really should reduce the draw distance even further.
nah, just make some better LOD
maybe 10%. They should fix colors instead, they are only 80% right.
The old is very subtle and still impactful - real cinematography.
lovely video, made me want to actually buy this game. subscribed.
Bravo, but I work really hard for my money and Rockstar don't deserve it anymore.
the exact video I've been waiting for
I think as someone who hasn't a "nostalgia" view on this game the classic lighting in the definitive edition is good now. I don't think the game needs a draw distance of 2m and a wall of bright orange fog like in the original. Remember that definitive edition is a "enhanced" version of the original and not a 1:1 copy. It should be modernized with the feel of the original.
Its garbage discusting garbGe
But it doesnt have a low draw distance, it just that the fog covers the long distance but you can still see everything from afar just barely
@@voodoo2006 Say you don't understand what he just said without saying it.
If anything they should be able to instantly load the entire San Andreas map at once with maximum LOD.
oh cool they fixed the GTA remakes that released earlier this yea-
'It's been a hair over 3 years since the Grand Theft Auto trilogy the definitive edition launched'
WHAT
honestly, it might be time for another playthrough of VC and SA after all these fixes and how much better they look now
I never expected them to fix the mess they released, but my god they proved me wrong. I can't wait to replay all 3 games now
The llighting might be unrealistic but it looks sooooo good. Kinda has the same effect like the Red Dead 1 Ragdolls compared to Red Dead 2. They are way more unrealistic, but funnier in every aspect
Very good video. GTA V ambience music complements it very well
Thank you for comparing it to the original game on PS2 instead. This is what the new updates should always be compared to.
You can get the PS2 Graphics back to 2005 PC Port with mods like SkyGFX and files from PS2, it look very good and can take advantage of mods to make it look even better nowdays.
It would be such a small change but making the game ground a little darker in the rural areas and San Fierro would pretty much make the new lighting perfect
This is the only thing that is bothering me, how “bright” the game looks when the original was very dark (sometimes to the point where the characters were just a silhouette lol)
Great patch nevertheless, they pretty much nailed the atmosphere of those “welcome to the 80’s” gta videos that people offered compared to the remasters
That GTA V pause menu theme is so nostalgic to me.
You should do a PS2 vs Definitive Edition vs Original PC+SkyGfx
Or maybe just compare PC+SkyGfx vs PS2. I liked how you did the comparison here
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
I think EA spoiled us with such a great Mass Effect remaster because this feels like the bare minimum for a remaster 😭 maybe I’m in the minority.
After all of this I think I'll still play the OG version on San Andreas.
nothing replaces the PS2 versions and i think the new update is great, but still, nothing replaces the PS2 versions (especially GTA: San Andreas)
Looks good to me can't wait to play it
I do like how the city skylines look with the changed lighting.
Rockstar didn't fix the trilogy.
Video Games Deluxe did, team that made LA Noire VR.
They also ruined sounds on weapons like uzi and minigun.
They need to fix camera and flight controls now. Still lots to fix before I’d consider purchasing
THIS is some real work here
CJ's back of the tanktop feel so mutch weirder now.😓
i hope rockstar keeps updating the game!
Definitely a lot better but I still think this game needs improvement
2004 game still beating most games and even it's own remastered version lol
I played the new version since yesterday again and i can finially say its fun to play, atmosphere is there guys!
Stars! I can't wait to drive around Las Venturas at night!
SkyGFX is great! In my opinion it’s the only way to play on PC. Thanks for watching!
