The PS1 and PS2 were really good with alpha and transparency textures, better than the competition at the time. Fog effects, windows, helmets, glass, fences and other things always looked best on old Sony consoles.
People used to say they got headaches from playing og Vice City with trails enabled but i wouldn't play without it, it just added so much to the atmosphere of the game for me as a kid and with the motion blur and heat haze it was almost dreamlike visually
VC of all the original trilogy is a vibe. The lighting. The music. The setting. It all has to play well together to create the magic the originals gave us. This is better but it still looks like MegaBloks
This is Genuinely Such a step in the right direction for these versions, I hope they work on a update to touch up the character textures, I actually really like the Cartoony look, but they need a lot more details
The game still needs a lot of work, then. I like the new lighting but honestly, there is too much contrast and saturation. Character models and a lot of environment textures need to dial the colours back.

@@liamjones9115Especially considering the things that it’s missing are small tweakable things graphically and physically that can easily be added in by Rockstar. Which it seems they are doing finally.
No its not. The definitive edition may not be as faithful to the original in terms of art style, but it is still a vastly superior game compared to the original. The graphics are in a league of their own, the bug free experience is inexplicable, and the performance and refresh rate on modern systems cannot be competed with by the classic games.
@angrysocialjusticewarrior "bug free experience" Okay bud. I haven't played it much but I can tell you that the Definitive Edition is definitively not free of bugs.

2:31 man, the apricot-colored sky was such a solid choice. It’s a shame they’ve gone with this piss-yellow vibe now, but hey, still better than what we had originally in the DE. Honestly, though, the Definitive Edition cranks up the contrast way too much in my opinion. There’s black crushing everywhere, when we should be seeing subtler shades of gray instead.
Yeah, I agree. I had to turn the contrast slider all the way down and it improves the look and also helps with everything looking oversaturated, but honestly, I think that's partly to do with how the textures were remastered as well.
I will 100% buy this if there are a few more patches to truly make it definitive, some more character work is needed and I'd like the missing song tracks to come back but I realise that's probably a pipe dream at this point.
Finally someone who knows wtf they’re talking about and appreciates vice city especially the original ps2 version, San Andreas is amazing but we going back to vice city baby one last time gta6 is gonna be the big one
A better comparison would be comparing the Definitive Edition to the original Xbox version which had better graphics and textures. The PS2 version, while legendary, was worse and doesn’t allow the best comparison.
The Xbox version of the game has slightly different graphics, as well as the fact that it came out much after the PS2. Besides, it’s also consistent with the San Andreas video I made, which required PS2.
If another update is in the works, I think fixing/extending the LODs should be top priority. Or bring the haze/fog closer to the player, so the awful LODs are concealed.
I don't understand why nobody is talking about heavy contrast in the new DE lighting that makes everything much darker than it should be, especially in comparison to OG games.
What i would have done differently would to actually make a good definitive edition and make the og graphics an option for players just like it worked with the halo trilogy
It was impossible. It's a port to a new game engine completely, not a updated game engine. So they had to work to try to recreate the same look which didn't go that well
I hope the new team see this video because I do think they want to improved as much as possible with these games and by the way man your videos are so professionally made it makes me appreciate these games even more because when you're playing them you never stop to realize how beautiful these games are even to this day
I also noticed that the game seems a lot darker, if you noticed at 7:48 compare the buildings, its like this in many more areas of the game, i understand that realistic lighting plays a big role now but it still kinda kills the vibe of the scenery in many ways, they also need to update the orange haze for vice city, make it more pinkish in a distance, it kinda looks like san andreas at times which is not true to the game.
6:12 something isn't right here, because with the release version that i still have on my drive, the weather looks actully foggy with extremeemly foggy volumetric vehicle lights. They actually seem to have downgraded that even lol.
I definitely think that if they got the yellowish color matches more to the peach color of the original, it would be a HUGE improvement. The DE is also quite a bit darker in a lot of weather so getting that fixed would help a lot too. Great video! Really excited to see your video coving this with GTA III. I feel like the classic lighting misses the mark, especially during the day, and doesn’t have the drab blueish-green tint the original had but that’s why I’m excited to see how it compares.
Always turned trails off straight away, didn’t like the effect in GTA III. So I didn’t know I missed out on the colour wash in PS2 VC. Learn something new everyday. Thanks.
This might be one of the most detailed and fair comparisons between the Definitive Edition and OG, R* should definitely take notes. For me, I think besides the lighting, the biggest problem is how plastic everything looks. The old school models were not designed with this high of a fidelity and it just doesn't mash well. I don't think a remaster is enough. They should have done full remakes ala Resident Evil style style to really recapture the magic of everything, but it would cost too much and let's be honest, this was just a cash grab and an excuse to make people hate the OG games so they'd hop on GTA Online to buy shark cards.
Great video man. I enjoyed it. I hope the developers see it and can convince the accountants to help implement some of the changes needed. I'm sure I'm not the only one waiting to purchase the new edition, as soon as I hear its worth it. If not, well og ps2 is still great.

Tldr: the classic lighting in DE still has less atmosphere than the original, and has no volumetric fog for some reason. The DE seems to hate fog in general unless its in the distance. And the water color never changes with the weather.
It's not "faithful," but it's beautiful. I just played through Vice City DE on PS5, and I was in awe of the graphics on an OLED television. Now, the gameplay and physics in these versions is another story.
Damn what a shame, San Andreas is now very faithful in terms of art style and the atmosphere and weather while this.. Only has the art style. PS2 graphics had to work under a limitation that invited so much more focused creativity and art style that some modern devs don't appreciate enough. You can have the biggest textures or the softest lighting effects in a game, but when you call your game the 'definitive' version you'd have to embrace every single detail that was in the original while improving but not disfiguring the overall art style of what made them iconic to begin with.
