It is awe inspiring (and devastating) to think of how much support these kids received from their parents. To be 8 years old, or even younger, and have your parents complete support, paying for lessens, shoes, clothes, driving you to class, everything for years and years so you can pursue these dreams. They don't even know if their kid will make it, and yet they're still willing and able to throw the kitchen sink at it. It''s sad to realize most kids don't get that kind of support and opportunity. How many amazing dancers will never be discovered because when they saw that first performance and announced they wanted to be a dancer at 7 years old, their parents said no; either for financial reasons or just thought it was stupid for kid to want to be a dancer? It makes you wonder how many artists, authors, dancers, scientists, doctors, etc never got to be, due to never having the support or opportunity as children? Great, now I'm super depressed.

Silas is such a joy! His obvious love for what he does and his gratefulness is so refreshing!

The ultimate thing that I take away from this series is the respectfulness of it. They only show the stories of those who make it into the NYC Ballet and the joy of that acceptance alone. They don't try to turn it into the typically silly/dramatic reality show circus of showing a pool of hopefuls and clinically televise the anguish of those who don't make it in a suspenseful showdown that would drink in their tears as if they were the ratings system itself. That's the kind of reality tv I'm used to, so I really appreciate this series for being so very different.

I love re-watching this and seeing how some of the apprentices and corps de ballet members have achieved higher ranks by now.

Male dancers never get the credit they deserve. They lift the women, strain their backs, are solicitous to make the women look good. Thank you beautiful male dancers. Your efforts give us extreme the beauty that is ballet.

The joy to get in must be so amazing. The heartache when you don't equally as painful. You been working something since 3-7 years old your heart and mind are set on this one thing the euphoria just to even walk those hallways, to dance in those studios, the gravity of it the chance of you being one of eighty eight chosen is so slim.

I hope that not everyone who wants to pursue something in any art form is being put down like I am. I think people are happy as long as they are doing what they love even if they are not extremely rich.

They will take any international student into SAB if their technique is what they want they don't hold any prejudice against you if you come from a different country.

No one can start studying dance at 4 years old ,at 4 years old some recreative program let you play in the studio guide and under supervision of a teacher ,who most of the time can't teach ballet ,study ballet is a completely different story ...

At my dance school I started at two. We started working on posture and feet at age 4. We started the bbo curriculum (I live in uk) at about 4 as well. You can go from pre syllabus get up to grade 8 and then it's professional

There is SAB (the School of American Ballet) that most of the dancers in the company attend. After that there is the apprentice program, and it is from there that people are accepted into the company or rejected.
I think that they can be apprentices for 2 years then they are either hired or they have to look for jobs in other companies.
NYCB doesn't hold auditions so the only way to get into the company is through the apprentice program.
