- #PandaStory: Early this morning cubbie had an exam and received his distemper shot. He now weighs 4.68 kgs, or 10.32 pounds. (That is just about what Bao Bao was at about the same age). As of 5:45ET the Zoo hadn't published a blog yet, but you can see the exam footage and interview with Annalisa Meyer, Deputy Director of Communications at Smithsonian’s National Zoo at this link:

Now to this video ~ typically Mei Xiang is a creature of habit. But today following her after breakfast snuggles with cubbie, she stuck around the den with him. I've seen this before ~ after a cub has an exam, and especially after having a vaccination too, the mother will stay close to her cub for awhile! But cubbie may have wanted mom to stay away as she brought in 3 large pieces of bamboo, did her "head-stand & paw" behavior, and then more or less insisted that he nurse! Amazingly enough cubbie had energy to once again practice walking. Like the vet said in the video when he examined cubbie's legs, he's really close!

Thank you Maureen! Those of us who have followed Mei's journey through motherhood over the past 15+ years really hope that that name is bestowed upon this cub! That said, any of those names would be fitting for this little guy who has granted us all so much happiness during these uncertain times.
@@DoxieMom19 I have been following the DC pandas since Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing arrived in the US and fell in love with them when I saw them at the age of 12. It makes me so happy to see Mei be such a loving mom for 4 cubs. Cannot wait to go to see the pandas in DC when the little miracle and parents can be seen by the public🐼💕🐼💕🐼

Cubbie was such a brave boy getting his exam.He didn’t squeal when he got his distemper shot. He is so beautiful when you see him up close oh my goodness I would love to hold him he is so beautiful. Just looking at those little eyes he didn’t act afraid. And the lady she wanted to hold him and she did she carried him like a baby. Thank you for sharing this with us.💗💙
That’s the most precious sight i have seen. Mei licking the little angel. Hes getting close. Cant wait for him to be scurrying around like his brother.
She's an amazing mom. He's almost there. It would be fitting that he takes his first steps in time for his naming. So, precious.

She is almost human in some ways they way she cradles him. She wanted to sleep but he was a stinker and wanted to play. So much cutenes.
I was thrilled to see these two all over the News & Internet today! I can't believe he's so close to walking & I'm excited for that milestone. Their lives will truly change then. Love their interactions & similar feistiness!

I remember my kids and shot time...no no no I'm not going mum!! Poor little guys didn't feel so good for the day. Cubbie jus needs to eat and rest. All better tomorrow. Mom looks a little exasperated when cubbie won't nurse. Mothers are the same when it comes to getting their kiddies to eat. 😄

The way he complains when he's being examined reminds me of one of my twin daughters. She hated being disturbed when she was in the NICU.

so thats where cubbie was when cam 1 was completely dark, i thought it might be checkup time .
but, he was such a good boy getting that shot. i was a bit squeamish myself watching it as i always was when my late doggie got her annual shots . his little hiney might be sore for a day or so .
i love him more and more each day, i just adore his practices but hope he doesn’t grow up too soon yet still hit his markers

I happened to watch live most of what your video shows today and was wondering why Mei seemed so agitated. Now I'm guessing it had to do with cubbie getting another exam and vaccination. Mei always makes me so nervous when she drags those bamboo sticks into the den! Thanks so much for posting these videos--I look forward to them every day!
I watched it live too!, it was around lunchtime and then at least a good hour while he fussed. Yes, she was definitely irritated! I thought it was because he wouldn’t stop squeeling...a few times she looked up at the ceiling (exasperated??) when she was trying to get him to nurse and he just. wasn’t. cooperating! Really funny when she walked off and left him in the den by himself, like she had had enough!
My guess, and this is based on seeing all 3 US Giant Panda mothers do this behavior, is that it is somehow related to a wild panda mother instinct. I've never been able to find any research or blog on this, but since it happens after a cub gets to be a certain age, or size, maybe it's related to cleaning their den (by now they've been in there awhile) and perhaps making it larger? Like I said, just a guess ... not convinced she's irritated or agitated.
I just hope he doesn’t get an eye scratched or poked. He is a cranky pants after that shot. I bet he is sore now. They seem to surprise me how much they do during the night and then sometimes during the day. Just like us humans I guess. Momma is always driven by the food delivery service. Lolol
@@DoxieMom19 in my opinion she could be worried about Bubby. When my son got his vaccinations, he would be lethargic and feverish. She knows he’s not himself and may be trying to make him feel better.
@@MM-xh6dp Mei Xiang's behavior is very driven by when her keepers are there, which is about 7am to 3pm. After that, she seems more relaxed and takes him out and about, especially during their night ~ but that could be affected by all the construction going on around the Panda House.

The cub is almost there with walking. He just needs to build up a bit muscle in his hind legs.

Thanks DoxieMom19 for posting these clips for us to enjoy! I love watching "Momma Mei" and "Da Squirminator" and today I really appreciated the link to the local news segment for those of us who aren't local. While I may be just a little quilty of anthropomorphization, the way "Momma Mei" looks at her cubbie speaks volumes on just how much she loves him! Then again there are those moments where she appears to be looking directly at the camera and silently praying "Oh Lord, please give me the necessary strength to deal with this one!" :) Watching "Da Squirminator" try to walk? Cheering him on from the sidelines with each attempt no matter how brief. Like everyone else I can't wait for those first steps! BTW I'm on Team "Xing Fu" all the way...
With all that bamboo that Mei is shredding. I can hard see little " Happiness ". That's little cubbies name that I gave him. Weeks ago because he brings so much happiness to us. Mei looks a little exhausted. Understandable when mom is taking care of baby boy. Can l kiss you boo boo. Poor baby feeling a painful. Maybe?? Mei is such a terrific mom. Mei wasn’t inpatient with Cubbie when he didn’t want to nurse at first.Like any Mom she wants to feed her little one.. A mothers love no matter human or animal you can’t change habits are the same. He may not have had an appetite because of his shot.💜💙

Yes, I'm guessing it's because of the scent of the shot because Mei Xiang is used to the scent of her keepers being on her cub.
When he's fussy and Mei is holding him, sometimes she seems to pet and stroke him like a mother would a child -- wonder if I'm just projecting that, or if she really is doing that?

Poor Cubbie shots stink!!! I really think Mei was trying to get him to learn to nurse when she is laying down as he did in the last video (because he is getting to big to hold and nurse comfortably- for Mom & Cubbie) but I'm pretty sure Cubbie thought Mom wanted him to settle down and sleep.....and his legs were made for flopping, oh walking? LoL 😂! They'll get the hang of things, when it comes to his food he is a serious little snacker! And HE IS SO CLOSE to getting all of his legs to go at once! Can't wait to see him get into mischief!

Gloria, just my guess, but I think this behavior may be linked to a wild panda instinct to keep their den clean and maybe enlarge it? I've never been able to find any supporting references on this behavior, but I've seen it in all 3 US Giant Panda mothers that I've watched over the years. It only shows up once the cub is bigger and older, and after they've been in the den for awhile. I do not recall seeing this behavior outside the den.

Not familiar with Mei Xiang’s usual behaviors, so not sure if she just happened to be very irritable when this video was shot that day, or she was like that with him from time to time when he was very little? I know caring for a baby panda can be very exhausting for the mom when they’re so small and fragile. She was kinda rough with him while also very cuddly and loving. It’s as if she was either mad and frustrated from a combination of not being able to find something good to eat, while also feeling tired from not sleeping well, or, just plain irritated from one of those “bad days” like us humans do. She seemed even more irritated after going in and out of the den a few times and returning without anything satisfactory to munch on. Her sitting in the corner with her head down and pushing/wiping cubbie away from her just looked like she was in an extreme irritated mood and couldn’t settle down.
I’m asking because I watched the video three times and rewinded certain parts to try and understand what she was doing and feeling. I love, love pandas and always want to understand what’s going on with the pandas in the videos that I watch. I’m fascinated by and adore pandas. They are such mysterious, beautiful, and fascinating animals. Some of their behaviors are very inexplicable yet fascinating to me. If someone could share their take on what was going on with her, I’d really appreciate it.
Sometimes there is not real explanation for Mei's behavior. But I can assure you this is all normal Giant Panda behavior, and that Mei knows exactly how to behave around her small cub so it does not come to any harm.
@@DoxieMom19 thank you so much for replying!! Yes, I know panda moms can sometimes be a little rough with their babies. Have seen many panda videos. Just never seen it when the baby is that small, but probably mostly because other pandas, especially the ones in China, do not have a panda cam on them 24/7.

@@CrystallyLavender Very true, the Zoos in the USA (San Diego, Atlanta, DC) have all granted us access to their newborn panda Cubs, not all of them were 24/7, but very close. I've been very fortunate to watch their amazing maternal behavior over the years.
@@DoxieMom19 yes, very fortunate for us as well that you share them with us consistently and even give lengthy descriptions of all the goings-on in every video, which’s quite time-consuming. So I really appreciate your videos and love that they don’t have really, really annoying music in them, like many of the other panda videos. Those ones drive me absolutely insane, and I often need to mute them just to watch the cuties in them. What can I say, I love and adore pandas too excessively! 😁 Thank you again for replying, you made my day! 🥰🙏
