- #PandaStory Day 88: The first scene occurred after mother Mei Xiang had finished her dinner on Monday and returned to the den. She tried to get cubbie to settle down, but he resisted ... and when he found himself face to face with a nursing opportunity, he took it ~ the first time he's nursed in that position! And again ... those nursing noises are adorable (and we cannot really hear them when he's out in room 3 in the playpen).
The 2nd scene was mother and son sleeping in the den ~ both sleeping on their backs!
The 3rd scene shows cubbie's latest attempt at walking! He's making progress ... he just has to get those 4 legs to cooperate at the same time. And when he gets stranded on his side, I just want to reach in and help him up!

Qi Ji is trying so hard to walk! I love how he sleeps on his back just like mom. Does anyone notice that Mei does pat him on his back quite a bit. She loves her baby boy so much! I'm so happy for her. I just love it when I catch her patting Qi Ji on his back.

One or two of those movements towards the end might have qualified as an actual "step", all four legs doing something coherent before his belly took over again, making them the first ones we've seen!
He wants to move around so bad - bless his heart - he likes moving around. Mama sure knew what she was doing. Keep trying little guy you'll get it.

Cubbie has gotten stronger with his moving around. I just get tickled seeing his little tail feathers when he is doing the splits. Those baby legs need to grow a few more inches to get fully under his 10 pound body. He is soooooo sweet!

Cubbie didn’t cry for his mommy even one time while he was alone and “swimming “ around the den! Such a difference from a few weeks ago.

Bless his lil heart he tries so hard. I think that his little legs are not strong enough yet, because his a little body weights so much. But he gets to where he wants to go. I love him more and more every time I see him. I too wish I could just reach down and pick him up and hold him by his front paws and help him walk.He’s growing up really fast💗💙
Wanda, you are exactly right ~ even if he had traction, his leg muscles are not developed/strong enough to allow him to walk ... and then there is the coordination too. But he's getting there!

Done! I voted for Xiao Qi Ji (Little Miracle) though it's a mouthful compared to his siblings' names e.g. BeiBei, BaoBao and TaiShan. Because his birth was a miracle (against all odds) and he brings a light of hope and happiness to the world in this seemingly dark time.

Talk about perseverance! The little one’s efforts to walk are so inspiring. It’s the cutest thing to watch those little legs go all over the place. He’s nearly there. I want to see the look on his face when he finally makes it! “Look at me, ma!” Or perhaps he’ll just collapse and sleep on his miracle achievement!

(Claudette) Love how our little smart one finds an upside down opportunity to nurse and goes for it! So cute. Then Mei flips him and after a quick complaint he again starts to feed happily --no wonder he is growing so fast!! Then when we find him sleeping on his back --wow he looks so much bigger stretched out than our usual fluffy white ball with bits of black! So so adorable!
He is tryjng SO HARD. Let's get him a non-slip pad under those paws! Strange isn't it how some animals are born practically walking out of the womb and the others have to wait and work so hard.

He found hi a new way to nurse, but oh boy, he was not done. Mei had to ger uo and reposition. He fussed until he got it. Mom raised her head like "Hurry up cubbie, I am tired". Them laying on their backs was so precious. I wish I had a photo of that. Then he wore hmiself out and went to sleep. Aww, so precious. I can't say it enough.

Thank you so much DoxieMom19! ❤️ I do have a question please. Has Mamma had check ups from the keepers as well? I just wondered, considering her age. I only see articles about cubby's exams. She is such a beautiful and diligent Mamma. Again thank you. ☮️💞🐼
Celia, I don't work for the Zoo and have no contact with them, but my guess is that the keepers know Mei Xiang really well (she's been at the Zoo for nearly 20 years), so her behavior would tell them a lot about her health. There are also behavioral watchers 24/7 that give feedback too. Also, I'm not sure if they're doing it now, but usually once a day keepers do a (optional) training session with their bears to check their eyes, mouth, paws etc. ... but since she has a cub I'm not sure if the keepers continue to do them. ~ Doxie

Jessica, it is normal. She had just come back to the den after consuming a lot of bamboo, and digestion takes a lot of work, making her breathe rapidly. Thank you! ~ Doxie
Question to Doxiemom19: in the wild, do they know if Cubs do the same turning, around and around in the "caves" that Cubs are borne? Or is the texture of the ground easier for their paws to grasp into? Thanks. I also note that throughout the crawling and turning, cub never cried for mom's help...which was a good thing because in the earlier part of the video when cub whined abruptly while nursing, MX sat up, repositioned herself.. then looked up and gave a "sigh" as if she was exhausted/tired.... I think at certain times Mother's do get tired, no?
Just a reminder, I am not affiliated with the Zoo, and have learned all I know from watching panda cubs on panda cams the past 12 years, and reading a lot of Zoo blogs.
I have not read anything about wild pandas, but I would think that they do go round and round because they need to develop their muscles and gain coordination in order to walk ... it's not just the texture of the floor. And I've been told this floor is a rubberized material which should give him a bit more traction than just concrete.
I'm sure she gets tired, but in the beginning it was cubbie keeping her awake ... now she wakes up cubbie for the most part!
why don't they put a rubber pad on the floor or something where he can get some traction? I feel sad for him trying to walk on the slick cement surface.
Sherry they are not cement they are a rubber base as cubbies nails grow his swim moves will start to rock then the bunny hop i think thats how I understand it have a good day 😀
