  • #PandaStory: We all love to see Xiao Qi Ji happy and enriched, living his best life as a sub-adult Giant Panda. And yesterday afternoon that appeared to be the case. Xiao Qi Ji was going in and out of the indoor pools, playing with his bamboo, racing from room to room, standing on the "drum" to boost himself up to the door's window, generally being his goofy, silly, playful self!
Something sparked this burst of youthful energy. Was it him just expending said energy, or was he trying to show his displeasure with his bamboo selection? Over the past few weeks I've notice him showing signs of being a picky eater (just my personal observation & opinion). He'll eat a bit from one pile, and then a bit from another pile, and show his displeasure in certain ways (vocal and behavioral). Yesterday's energetic session occurred around 3:40pm, but I kept watching and he didn't settle down. At 4:15pm sugar cane was dropped into room 2 through the patio window. At 4:50pm he received a fruitie, and at 5:45pm, he got some bamboo through the same window. He settled in to eat those as well as some of the existing bamboo, finally filling his belly so he could take a nap.
I'm sharing some of Zoo Atlanta's Giant Panda blogs that address this "problem" that keepers at any managed care facility have to deal with!
    Zoo Atlanta ~ Friday, March 13, 2015
... Some people like to think our pandas are so picky because we spoil them by offering fresh bamboo so frequently. But after speaking with other keepers and visiting the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, it is my opinion that this behavior is just innate to giant pandas. In the wild, a panda would sit down in a nice patch of bamboo and only eat the best and most nutritious pieces, then move on to the next stand to do the same thing. Wild pandas leave immature pieces or less nutritious pieces to develop, so they can be eaten later. Our bamboo team does its best to cut the best-looking bamboo (based on what our pandas choose to eat), but as humans, we cannot detect what the pandas do to know which pieces are the best. Therefore, we offer them huge amounts in hopes that they will find enough to satisfy them. We mostly succeed! It's just those times that we are switching from species to species that we find tricky.
One thing I have noticed after all of my years working with pandas is that the young ones are not as finicky as the adults. They only become more selective around 3 to 4 years of age. I suppose those first couple of years eating bamboo are a learning curve for the youngsters, and they have to develop their palate.

I'm not sure about you guys, but before I started working with pandas, I had no idea how picky they were. One day they like a species of bamboo, the next day they don’t. They like bamboo harvested from location A and dislike the same species of bamboo harvested from location B. They like a couple pieces from one bundle, but not the rest. The bamboo looks perfect to us keepers, nice and green and full of leaves. Clearly, they sense something that we cannot. That is why we offer them multiple species of bamboo each day ... Picky, picky pandas.

What a bundle of energy! Looked like he needed to do a few more circuits outside! What a boy, a real entertainer even tho he may not realise it. And I am left with a huge smile on my face and a heart full of joy.
All being well I should be visiting the Tian family next week, I am beyond excited at the prospect.
    Thank you DoxieMom.

DoxieMom - thanks for including those blurbs of info from Zoo Atlanta about the pickiness of the pandas. I knew they could be picky from one species of boo to the next, but didn't realize the problem could stem from the same species. Must be so frustrating for the keepers who only want to please those gorgeous bears.

Lately I’ve also noticed that our Qi Ji has been bouncy, bumpy & a ball of almost inexhaustible energy. I didn’t think much of it as he’s always been extra animated since he was a wee blob of joy. Some nights since his separation from momma Mei I’ve caught him on live cam having a party, then just keeping still like he was thinking, or sleeping long stretches mostly on top of the rock work. As for developing some picky eating habits, I’d tell myself that he’s like a food taster with exquisite palate that was let loose in a banquet. Some boo got Qi Ji’s “false thumbs” down and like
him I was almost sure that the next serving of a different variety of boo would be rolled out by his keepers. As that article from Zoo Atlanta noted, cubs are less finicky when it comes to their diet. But once they hit 3 or 4 years old their palate develops a taste for specific food, and our Qi Ji is fast approaching that age. A subdued Qi Ji is the outlier, the normal Qi Ji is a dynamo that is firing on all cylinders.

You bring up a good point about him being picky about the bamboo. He did seem frustrated in those silly scenes and didn’t seem interested in the bamboo when he did stop for a nibble. I’m glad the keepers were around to give him other things to eat so he can feel satisfied ❤

Very interesting to read other keepers input. I thought he was having problems figuring out where to bite and break the bamboo. Now I see there is more involved. He is used to being able to steel Mei’s piece if he doesn’t like his selection.

Thank you DoxieMom for another cute video. Thank you also for comments from Zoo Atlanta. I don't see why pandas can't be picky, we as humans are picky about what we eat so they can be too. I will always remember my son picking out all the vegetables in the stir fry he had as well in cup of noodles and to me the veggies are the best part. LOL.

I know Mei wasn't having her bamboo the other day and it does seem like Qi Ji was restless, so it makes sense he couldn't settle down with his boo. He also seemed to want to be outside. Maybe he has a case of Spring Fever panda style.

I have read articles that pandas do become more finicky with age. Mei turned down her bamboo a few weeks back and the staff switched all of it out for over night. I don't think this has much if anything to do with Mei. He is a big boy now and has been doing very well by himself thanks to the keepers and Mei. He is nearing 3 years old and has a more discerning palate. In any case, i was amazed at his power and his acrobatic skills. Thanks Doxie Mom for an incredibly interesting and educational video.

    • @DoxieMom19

This video isn't sped up. If you've been following his development for awhile, you'd know that he (as well as other cubs and even adults that I've watched) get playful sometimes, which is normal. But it really was what happened after this, the repetitive behaviors, those were concerning, enough so that someone gave him sugar cane, then a small fruitie, and finally what appeared to be bamboo.

  • @juliearthur8303
    @juliearthur8303 Рік тому

Hope this was mainly about the bamboo not being to his liking. And I'm so glad there was a keeper watching, to interrupt this behavior by giving him some of his favorite snacks. I could be wrong, just my opinion... I just think this didn't look like Qi Ji being happy. More restless, agitated... Doing things to make himself feel better, but at hyper-speed. Overall, he has handled his separation from Mei as well or better than we might have imagined. Seems like that's especially true when he's outside. Fresh air, with his favorite trees and hammie to play in... Looks like he does great when he's there. Inside, maybe a little different sometimes.
I saw a video made from panda cams a day before this one, all indoors... Not so much hyperactivity but lot of pacing from room to room. Also bleating to himself, sounded sad to me. And sniffing at various areas of the floor, the rockwork, and the walls of the den, where he also sat for a time, looking lonely. Again, all just my opinion... But it seems like that would be very natural at this stage. Mama Mei was the center of his world... His protector, teacher, playmate, and sole companion for his whole little life. After 2-1/2 yrs, he's not likely to forget her in 3 weeks. Even if that's true, I know he'll continue to adjust and the keepers are watching him, doing all they can to help. I just think it might take a while for him to figure out what to do with himself now that he's alone, especially at night, indoors. He'll get there. Just a matter of time.

Aww:/ looks like a very frustrated 🐼😢 Maybe they could supplement him a bit more?.. something like more leaf🍃biscuits, more apples, sweet potatoes, whatever other things he enjoys eating & a decent size bowl of milk twice a day🥰 I've watched many other pandas in China tht had issues with properly eating enough bamboo [for whatever reason] so they were instead given more of "everything else." Just my thoughts.. I know Smithsonian takes very good care of their pandas 🐼 so if there is anything they can do to make their lives better they will! Tysmfs

The keeper's are on top of this, giving him lots of nutritious biscuits, yams, apples, carrots. The point of this video is that Qi Ji is like every other panda, they go through picky periods, and his keeper's are tasked with figuring out what is triggering his behavior, balancing spoiling him and ensuring he's healthy and happy. We as viewers just never know what is happening in the minds of our pandas.
