Electronic Arts on the Sega Saturn

  • Electronic Arts had been an important part of my Sega Genesis experience in the early 1990's. They would also play a strong role on the Sega Saturn, at least in the beginning.

    Episode Notes:
    1. If you plan on buying EA games for the Sega Saturn, be sure to also buy a Memory Cartridge as well. A single EA game game could swallow the entire Saturn internal save area alone.
    2. EA is often forgotten on the Saturn because of so many sports games, but there are other games very much worth a look.
    3. The vast majority of these games tend to be very cheap. Only the shoot'em ups command any real money.
    4. All games captured on a Framemeister via RGB SCART.
    5. EA was also responsible for a Shogi and Mahjong game for the Saturn. The Mahjong title was a Japanese launch game.
    6. Music:
0:16 - Palm Desert Road Rash (Genesis)
1:35 - Madden Title Theme (Genesis)
    1:48 - Madden 97 Theme
4:16 - Loaded On the Go
    8:38 - NBA Live 98 Menu
    10:35 - Road Rash 32-bit Track 2
13:34 - Viewpoint Neo Geo MVS
14:41 - Road Rash Redwood Forest (Genesis)
Ending theme is from Batman for the Sega Genesis. Opening 'SEGA' jingle is from Astal for the Sega Saturn.

Back in the day, the worst Video game company was GT aka Atari. They are bad as what EA doing today. Atari also ruined the developer and they forced devs to finished their game in a rush way and didn't give their much time to developed and finished it properly. The game like ET was an example. Atari just gave the devs a 5 weeks to developed it. Hell it was painful for the developer that deal with them and not enough time to polished their game as well. They need to rushed their worked so bad. Then when the game came out, it is horrible failure and became the worst game ever release at the time. Same happened on Blood 2 though. So Atari is responsible of this tragedy. FUCK ATARI

Same for me. I didn't own Loaded when the console was new and didn't get around to picked it up until like 2010 or so. It's a pretty fun game and I remember two player being fun. It's been a while since I've played it but the two things I really remember from it is that it can be hard as hell and that I wished the camera was zoomed back just a bit. It's really right on top of your player almost the whole time.

Just a note: Madden '97 was done with Sega's easy-but-underpowered SBL libraries. For Madden '98 we completely rewrote the Saturn version on the bare metal, with hand-tuned assembly where needed and a few Saturn hardware tricks like the smooth crossfade from the main menu into Play Now (the PlayStation doesn't do that). We had Madden playable on the Dreamcast (and EA Canada had FIFA running) when the call came down to pull the plug, and we were not pleased when EA's official excuse was that its developers couldn't understand the hardware.

EA was always crooked. They had sega thinking they could illegally make games for the Genesis through reverse engineering. That's why their cartidges look different and they got a higher percentage of sales then other 3rd party companies. Sega wouldn't normally allow anything different but they had sega by the balls. I still fire up the old Saturn just to play nfs and road rash.
Sad to think the EA of the 80s & 90s have become something completely different, corrupted.
Back then we would look at EA titles as a sign of quality. They had an aura about them, also the way they treated there studio and dev teams were way different, they were like music artists you would know who developed what in a game even by face. Hence why they are called Electronic Arts.

I remember seeing Panzer Dragoon and being shocked at how good it looked. The PSX never caught my attention in the same way. Sega Lord X, next time you get a chance, make sure you look up a guide for Battle Garegga and access the menus. Leave it in Japanese because there are more options to choose from.
    You can:
    1. Turn on small hurtbox on your ship so you can't get shot down as easily. Enemy bullets have to connect with the center of your plane to hit you if you turn this on.
    2. Turn on "red bullets". That way most of the enemy bullets will be red and you can see them easier. The default gray bullets blend in with the backgrounds and are harder to see.
    3. Choose the arranged soundtrack by toggling the BGM option. The arranged soundtrack is even better with real guitars.
Also, the game uses a dynamic difficulty and basically punishes you for getting points and staying alive. So one thing you can do is to avoid getting the bright yellow rank items because they're just points and when you get those you're turning up the difficulty. The darker yellow round items with the single line in the middle are the shot power up. Try to avoid picking up any unnecessary items at all once you're sufficiently powered up because that just increases your rank/difficulty. I recommend you give yourself as many lives as you can in the options menu as well and/or simply turn down the difficulty a notch or two. A more advanced strategy is to die on purpose and use your ship's exploding parts as a weapon because that's the only thing you can do to lower the dynamic difficulty and bring your rank down while playing. :)

EA on the Saturn was truly a mixed bag, some games like NFS, Road Rash and Soviet Strike were very good (and in a few cases better than the PS versions). As time went on however , it was getting pretty clear that EA's efforts were being focused more on the PS1 and PC, with games like FIFA98 being pretty bad (despite stellar PS and PC versions).
To be fair, their N64 efforts were also pretty mixed , so its not even a Saturn specific problem.

To put those brutal ports of NHL 98 and NBA Live 98 in perspective the PC versions of those games on a blazing fast Pentium 233 with 32MB of RAM and a 4MB "video accelerator" ran smoothly at ~720p with facemapped player models, reflections and motion capture animation. The Playstation ports are far better but in NHL 98 instead of face maps every player had Brendan Shanahan's face IIRC.
A video on the brief Segasoft era would be cool. I remember being really hyped for Vigilance (1998) but never being able to find a copy. I did get Rocket Jockey though and it was one of my favorite games of that period. Last Bronx was fun too. The anime intro theme was in .AVI format on the CD so I ran it in Windows Media Player with my boom box connected to the aux port of my sound card and recorded the song onto a cassette tape.

I recall I purchased fifa98 rtwc back in the day because of the good reviews from Italian press, it was ok but miles away from wws97, one thing it had, a wonderful soundtrack which led me to discover the Crystal method and the American electronic music scene.

I don't know about the Saturn version, but at least on PlayStation, Croc is a really good 3D platformer. The tank controls just take a little getting used to, and it's well worth the effort. 👍

No wonder many games from eletronic art or ea didn’t translate well to the saturn, the saturn was not easy to programm and it required more time from game dev’s to get it right, wich costed them more money to do so, so with that in mind i do actually respect those many misserable ports on the saturn!!!

Can't beat EA's Genesis days. They were easily one of the most important developers on the console. It's a shame that Sega helped build EA's empire (while competing against them to be fair) only to be abandoned and then stomped on by backroom deals. And now we have the cold and soulless corporate entity that EA is today.

May I mention that the Playstation version of the original Need For Speed actually looks washed out as compared to the Saturn version. The colors seem alot more vibrant on Saturn. I remember me and my brother playing both and I actually got to see that first hand. A victory for the Saturn here..of coarse in my nm opinion.

Sadly they were usually shite graphically on the Saturn. But nowadays I tend to blame this on Sega not helping third party developers enough. I think what Sega should have done is develop genre-specific engines (like a sports game engine with great VDP2 planes, transparent clouds overhead etc.), then give these to third party developers so they'd get a head start. Sadly, Sega wouldn't even have done this internally within its own divisions, let alone to a third company.
