"It's a song of quiet anger at the way the world is and God's failure to intervene," Bono explains in the book U2 by U2. "A few people around me had experienced some awfulness that they just couldn't forgive God for. Personally, I don't look at the world as a place where God is in charge of everything that happens. I think it is up to us how much we let God into our lives. It's a world of wild and unexpected winds, earthquakes, and tsunamis where accidents can happen. I don't blame God for them. I think this is what happened when we threw God out of the garden, which is my own interpretation of what happened in Eden!"
Youre right his farther died during Elevation Tour, but i read it in U2byU2 I think that he said his voice came bakc in the studio. Anyway your right his voice was fantastic, clear, young and at it´s best in the 80´s. But in the 90´s and in this decade he´s got kinda different singing style wich is cool, too.
“The next minute your blowing a fuse and the Cartoon Network turns into the news” “God’s phone is off the hook babe, would he even pickup if he could?” Jesus
This is a rare performance of this song since it was quickly dropped from the Popmart tour setlist after only a couple of times. It does have a lot of potential though!
Agradezco no ser el único loco que ama "Pop"!!! Para mí gusto su disco más arriesgado y creativo. Lástima que nadie entendió la ironía que rodeaba el concepto.
Everyone using this performance to dislike the Pop era in general, understand this was the very first PopMart show, and a lack of rehearsal time caused by the album falling behind schedule caused a lot of the early shows. Doesn't make Pop a bad album nor does it make PopMart a bad tour. Just look at any performance from the shows after. They're fantastic.
This is one of the best songs from the album. Ok, yeah, he is struggling, but sometimes thats what you get from live music. All human at the end of the day, and personally I think it was great... Lets face it, who wants to listen to studio recorded songs all the time.
I love this performance. Bono still giving it his all - and struggling through it - when his voice was shot because of the "desert weed" in Nevada. One of my favourite U2 songs from the great album, Pop.
I think this is a difficult song to sing. He does sound a little off. But sometimes the imperfections are interesting as well. But the song is really powerful. As are most of the tracks on Pop. An outstanding record. Their 2nd best in my opinion
Take a look at Brandon Flowers' version of this song live at The Academy in Dublin!...it was AMAZING!...I was there, and that's what brought me here, to listen to the original! :)
See, I find that Bonos Voice on the Vetigo tour was a bit stronger and much melodic, for example on Miss Sarajevo the way he hit those notes was AMAZING. I felt that on Elevation he would scream/yell singing but Vertigo he had much more control and melody in his voice.
This is totally raw. In my opinion POP is extremely under rated. Of course there's alot of screw ups in this show. What kind of a stupid statement is that, ma11he0 ??? It was the first show of this tour and there are always kinks in the first show. Plus the fact that U2 were totally rushed to release the PoP album and tour.
he missed out my favourite part of this song... "and the cartoon network turns into the news" that line on the alnum and even in the official video sends chills through me...This is a good version, but I cant help feel dissappointed :( XxX
The best version of this song is from the Single.. titled "singler version" The arrangment on the single version blows away the album version. dont get me wrong, I am a huge fan of POP but this song just flows a lot better on the single version. Also, last night on earth has a single version but if I recall there wasent too much of a difference with that version.
wow never knew they played this live....where did you get this footage from?.....i saw popmart in melbourne towards the end of the tour....they where really firing on all cylinders by then...pop is still one of my faves....i hate how they dis it so much now......
I think the reason they stopped performing it live was that they're trying to be intimate, but the crowd just doesn't get it. I love the electric version though, the acoustic one gets boring.
i am a massive u2 fan, i love soo many bands, but none in my opinion can compete with u2 now, Pop is probably my third fav album after achtung and joshua
You're not alone in feeling this way about this performance! This was Popmart tour's opening night and U2 was far from ready to perform this and other songs from Pop. Add the fact that Bono's voice was shot during that era. This song was dropped from the setlist for Popmart shortly after.
yes pop was unfinished. but I love U2 at their most experimental. Nowadays what is a finished album without 32 remixes.u2 always move on and on and thats what makes them.
This is from the opening show for the Pop Mart tour for which U2 didn't get much time to rehearse the newest material. This first show was plagued with problems on many of the new songs due to the lack of rehearsal time. This song was dropped from this set list fairly quick along with several of the new songs from Pop. Compare this show with the show that was taped in Mexico almost a year later and you hear a polished U2. However, they didn't play any of these new songs on that show.
Wasn't this the first Popmart show ever? I remember they had to rush recording, release and promoting the record due to the tour schedule. It's not a good performance, but far from being abysmal. I like it. But I still wait for a good live version of this beautiful song
have to agree there. they were totally unrehearsed when the popmart tour started in LV. they couldnt even remember how to play the old ones, the new ones were quite poor. it wasnt until u2 hit europe on the tour where they started to find their feet with the new songs and tech stuff. that is why they switched starring at the sun to acoustic, dropped this one from the set along with do you feel loved and miami.
Bono actually drags this one down. Edge sounds a bit sloppy, but I rather like what he's doing inside of the melody. It's interesting. This isn't bad at all.
yeah I heard that he had immense problem while working on the album Pop and when they recordet the Chorus of ,"Last Night on Earth". You can´t hear cause Edge sang to and they put alot Hall on the vocals. But he had really good times during Popmart, especially with his Falsetto. He said his voice fully came back when recording Kite when he was singing the Bridge: ,, I´m a maaaaaaaaaaaaann, I´m not a child
@lonewolf2379 - The album overall just seems rushed. On average it scores lowest of all u2 albums, that's not to say there isn't a good track. This track and Staring at the Sun are the standouts. Albums like Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, ATYCLB, HTDAAB and to a lesser extent War, Zooropa and No Line just have alot more tracks that stand out. The Popmart tour actually began before the album was finished. While the tour was huge, it was not as good as Zoo TV or 360.
I absolutely love this song, and I don't like this version, so I agree with you. I guess they get bored singing the same song like 20 million times on tour. But I would be so sad if they did this version. The video version was so perfect...

Pray in his Name and have faith and his angels will surround you
Best Song Ever !!!
Hermosa versión

In the 80s he wasn't a singer but a screamer. Nowadays he has better technique which means he's a singer.
Haters Gonna Hate, this is pure Magic and the *POP* album is great as it is !!!
Why would anyone hate this is gorgeous....it's their fault if they don't have the mind capacity to appreciate it 💯
“The next minute your blowing a fuse and the Cartoon Network turns into the news” “God’s phone is off the hook babe, would he even pickup if he could?” Jesus

2:10 Amazing vocal. Outta fucking nowhere!

Saludos.

This is probably the best song from Pop. Really good guitar!
Yes
If you heard every U2's album, you would hear your life's story - that's amazing in U2's music.
This is one of the best songs from the album. Ok, yeah, he is struggling, but sometimes thats what you get from live music. All human at the end of the day, and personally I think it was great... Lets face it, who wants to listen to studio recorded songs all the time.
Bono's fluffing some of the lyrics aside, this is far better live than the band and critics would let you believe.
I love this performance. Bono still giving it his all - and struggling through it - when his voice was shot because of the "desert weed" in Nevada. One of my favourite U2 songs from the great album, Pop.
This album lives very well today all these years later
It's my fevourite song from "pop"
I love ALL their albums. Each one is so unique and has a certain mood and imagery it brings to mind...Pop was terrific and perfect for the 90's!
sad that this beautiful song never made it
Sensacional
Incredible version !!
haha, Bono in the end: i'll do better next time
well, my opinion on Bono's voice during popmart is different but I understand your point of view :)
all in all: he's amazing :)
amo esta canción :)
This version is incredible !!!

por primera vez escucho esta cancion en vivo!
Y yo
Y yo también

Incredible vocal around the 2:10 mark

thanks Olli...you send it to me on 9/11. ....in an situation, when my best friend, my dog was so ill, and it help`s ...my best friend is`nt die
Wish they would rework this album and finish it the way they intended bc there’s clearly good material to work with
'cause people are stupid. i love so much this album
Just wonderful, especially the lyrics.
nunca habia escuchado en vivo!
que belleza de cancion
he missed out my favourite part of this song... "and the cartoon network turns into the news" that line on the alnum and even in the official video sends chills through me...This is a good version, but I cant help feel dissappointed :(
XxX
I mean .. Popmart Las Vegas is probably U2's worst show but this performance is .. breathtaking, Bono's voice is fantastic.
The best version of this song is from the Single.. titled "singler version" The arrangment on the single version blows away the album version. dont get me wrong, I am a huge fan of POP but this song just flows a lot better on the single version. I think the reason they stopped performing it live was that they're trying to be intimate, but the crowd just doesn't get it. I love the electric version though, the acoustic one gets boring.
fantastic song...another great song from pop
i am a massive u2 fan, i love soo many bands, but none in my opinion can compete with u2 now, Pop is probably my third fav album after achtung and joshua

Wake up Edge! Some chorus would ve helped there.
yes pop was unfinished. but I love U2 at their most experimental. Nowadays what is a finished album without 32 remixes.u2 always move on and on and thats what makes them.
One of the best U2's guitar riffs
Good version, but needs more work on it to be perfect. When Larry start the drums, give me chills
Great version !!!

this is my favorite song of "pop", i really like album and song, but this performance isn't good. voice of bono is really bad in THIS performance.
Para ver a este grupo hay que quitarse el sombrero si no es imposible verlos. ARRIBA U2.
Absolutamente
Wasn't this the first Popmart show ever? I remember they had to rush recording, release and promoting the record due to the tour schedule. It's not a good performance, but far from being abysmal. I like it. But I still wait for a good live version of this beautiful song
Bono's voice was terrible during this period. Fortunately it has improved since.
Bass and drums...wow
Guauuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!
@starfish146 it's a heavy woorded album ;)
Being a rough a edit, Bono still nails it at @ 2:05-2:10
Amoooooo.....
Worst performance and yet sooo emotional !
Pop studio blah. Pop live :)

Popmart at las vegas was when bono hurt his voice. You can tell in this song he trying not to sing to hard. Still u2 is amazing.
One of my favourite songs. Magical.👏🇦🇺
✌️💞😥
Sooooooooooooooooo Nice!!!
If God Will Send His Angelllllllllllllllllllllsssssssss....................
His father died in 2001, in between the Slane Castle concerts I think.
U2 ♥️♥️♥️♥️ elsker jeres musik ❤️
Super vivement qu’ils rejouent des morceaux de pop
Hehe, they ruined a brilliant song...
I have this single-FORGIVENESS ! (YOU ALSO?)
También cantaron "Do you feel loved".
Yo estuve en el concierto del 3 de diciembre.
Excelente
U2 e VC
🎶❤
POP is a misguided mess but there are moments when it transcends. The bridge on this song soars.
This puts a tear in my eye !
Terrible performance. DYFL was also dropped, but I feel that was superior...it may not have taken off, but this song is just a mess live.
Pop and Popmart tour are the Worst record and tour that U2 have ever made....
Brandon Flowers covers this song better than the original.
