I really enjoyed the series however the ending left so much more to be discovered. Hopefully there will be a season 2! I kinda wonder if the reason she went into the forest was because she lost her parents and she was trying to find herself. If she lost them while she was gone that would haunt her. She didn’t think about the impact her being gone would have on her family and friends. Overall I did enjoy watching this ❤
A lot of people have this fantasy about going into nature and living off the land, so I get the appeal of the story line, but this is more like an "after school special" (from the olden days haha). The crazy twist at the end to teach some kind of lesson or inspire a conversation in the jr high classroom. This is super juvenile of me, but the best part was when she was delirious hiking out of the woods, thought she saw her Mom, and ran straight into a tree. 😂
Had she allowed her parents to know she was ok and kept some contact I would understand but as a mother I thought she was cruel and selfish. Her parents died in pain of lost of a daughter
I was disappointed at the ending. Hoped there would be a season 2 to find out what happened to her parents. Seems like a cliffhanger. I agree with your thoughtful assessment if this was indeed the end of the show. Sad.
I don’t know anyone at 16 like this character who would go off on her own unless she was having some kind of a mental breakdown. The ending was pretty terrible because, if, she didn’t know her parents were dead and found out they died, dad trying to find her, then she’s gonna spend the rest of her time in the forest when she goes back there because that’s where she’ll go, because of her guilt over their deaths.
She couldn’t survive in the extreme weather conditions, so if suicide is what would eventually happen to her, her taking her own life would be more realistic than attempting to survive in such wilderness. Take the reality show that offers $100k for the last one surviving in extreme weather conditions and they only can hold out for about 75-110 days. The winners usually have some expertise in extreme weather conditions survival, like ex military, or experts in shelter construction and foraging tp survive skills. All she had was a survival manual, this is more Science Fiction than Lost in Space.
If you look close enough at the parents picture post, on the left hand cover it states post 2 weeks ago. The theory of her knowing about her parents death cannot be true obviously because she’s been in the wilderness.
the post was there.. it was a RIP condolence post.. it could hav happened far before it was posted.. like the post of her "missing".. that was months later too.. maybe she will go back and think she left bc she had something to do with it..
This and her phone in the beginning said it was September but as a Washingtonian it doesn’t start snowing until late December or January in most places. September to December is months, not weeks.
A lot of people are seemingly super offended by this show but I thought it was a masterpiece. Hoping and praying that season two isn’t far off. I’d watch it just for the cinematography because it’s filmed so beautifully.
loved it too tho its not realistic that a kid would manage that well in the elements.. no training no experience she learns to tie knots from a vid and make a trap, build a house (cabin) all by herself.. you can "know" these but it takes practice to be effective IRL. the ending floored me I thought the surprise ending would be she would find out she was pregnant (hosp).. didnt expect the parents news.. tho another poster said she might hav left because they died.. that the beginning texting mom was a hallucination and she left after they died.. who knows. but the ending was great bc l endings dont usually get me but this one did.. hope they do a penelope ll
This was such a beautiful series and that ending was shocking. Im guessing that is the reason she went off to find something out there. Megan's acting was superb and im hoping for season 2.
I have some guesses. She's a knocked up teen orphan raising her child in the woods in a tree house and teaching him spear throwing to defend against bears and cougars while at the same time saving the trees from loggers with her social media pages...
I enjoyed this series. Hoping for a second season. I had to step out of my mom shoes and not think of this from a mom’s point of view of how worried her parents would be or how the outside world would be looking for her; family, friends, police, news and all. Also I had to not think the worst was going to happen to Penelope every time she encountered someone new. I let myself go on her journey with her. To experience and enjoy everything she went through. That made this show so much better. The first couple episodes I kept telling myself I had to allow myself to go on her journey otherwise my mom worries would ruin it all. For the people that seem to be annoyed or mad about this show for her being selfish you have missed the point of going on the journey and her experience. If I were to recommend this to anyone who hasn’t watched it I would tell them to do the same. It made it much more enjoyable. You could see and feel how free Penelope felt throughout the series and how she was finding herself. I read a comment about that said the post she read about her parents was dated 2 weeks ago so it means that her parents died while she was gone. I hope that even with it being 2 weeks ago that it doesn’t mean they died 2 weeks ago just that the person who posted is saying they still miss them. Like this UA-camr suggested hopefully her parents had already died and that is why she went into the woods and is having a hard time accepting it. We will have to wait until season 2.
I don't believe her parents died prior to her leaving. Her parents left emails when Penelope was in the library and how they missed her. Also, at the beginning of the movie Her mother texted her about the $500 gift card charge that Penelope used to buy the equipment. It socks if they weren't going to make a season 2. These kind of netflix series makes you feel like they're saying, "screw you people, we got you to watch, that's all that matters," $
I thought the same thing. Pregnant and no means of contacting Peter since she burned the letter with his email. I feel Penelope had no intentions to return but knowing about her possible pregnancy, she was no longer alone and had to think about different measures for her child.
Was she pregnant? The counselor mentioned "Planned Parent Hood" and gave her "Mommy pants." Then she said something about if the same condition happens again, which made her lose consciousness. Am I the only one who caught this? LOL
I was so disappointed to learn there would be no explanation of what happened to her parents or even further observation of how Penelope processed such shocking news. The beginning of the show, was tough for me too. As a mother of teenagers I hated the way she ended up in the woods, thinking of how her mother's life would have been impacted by Penelope's un-discussed decision to walk away from her life. I found myself thinking at every stage what might be happening in her former life - what her parents would have been going through, her friends, her town. Overall I really enjoyed the show but I'm pretty big mad at the ending.
Its netflix in 2024. What you think as a parent doesn't matter. What matters is some silly teenager who is unsatisfied so throws everything away to find herself. That'a ALL that matters in todays culture and everyone just needs to understand that. I mean, the dems believe and want to drop the voting age to 16. Teenagers know how the world works because they're on their phone all day and have access to information.
OK why would the parents be sleeping in the room with the kids. All the parents seem to be up except for them and look at the way they were sleeping. So they could have died and she forgot. I was on a hike and doing volunteer work. After a month and a half I forgot my address, phone number, work but still remembered my family. I finally decided to go home. Went to the city for a few days to adapt and then went home. So I can see the possibility that she forgot.
stupid netflix trash. the perspective of a strong courageous bold teenage girl is all that matters. she has an expensive mobile phone, has caring parents that want the best of her, but she has her calling and just leaves. throughout the season, she doesn't get dirty even after wading in muddy water . her boots and socks are same as day one. her face is always moisturized. she doesn't have to eat. what a believable show about a modern day teenage girl that doesn't need her phone or the internet. and at the end, her parents are dead. although netflix won't make it her fault. it'll be something else to convince the viewer that her stupid decision to runaway was justified and understandable. what a waste of time for anyone that has an ounce of common sense.
ikr.. one vid and she ties knots and a pamphlet to build a trap and build a cabin.. SEALS learn outside survival and it takes months of training.. they hav to PRACTICE to make it effective.. that part totally unrealistic.
I am so disappointed that I wasted my time on this show. I was really really liking it. But the way it ended was horrible. You had no idea where they dead before she left which I don't think so not from what the beginning was. Did they die because she left. I just don't like things that just leave it up in the air and you don't know what the rest of the story is. I don't know if this is a mini series and it's over or if there will be more. It just left you hanging.
@@healthraven Well, sure, that's something a lot of people think when they're exploring their faith. I would ask her questions about that, not judge her. Christianity can handle criticism..

Great flick, her immature understanding of life, took an astonishing impact, hurting Her parents so much, :/

Best guess is that they were killed in a car accident while out looking for her and they argued accusing one another of being the reason she ran off.

Why did the social worker suggest Planned Parenthood? Is Penelope pregnant? Why did she search for Peter before looking for her parents?
Good question, she also almost contacted the boy she slept with. Maybe at the clinic they did some tests and knew she was pregnant.

I'm not sure she would offer her percocet if she was pregnant.
Counselors offer all teenagers planned parenthood services! Also, mom jeans are a style of jean, not for pregnancy!!
