Matt WhoisMatt Johnson I follow a lot of film makers on UA-cam and I like your videos the best. Your nice and down to earth. If you have not already I would love to see a video on how you market yourself using social media (outside of UA-cam) obviously I know you do that. But like do you use google adds, or Facebook adds and if so how do you structure those adds for clicks? For my price my videos are not half bad, but I need people to see them.
If you go with a subscription based licensing platform, does that mean you can use any song for as many videos as you want, as long as you made the video within the year of your subscription? What if you make a video and use one of their songs and then don't get the subscription the next year? Are you still good?
I usually don't leave comments, but I do frequently watch your videos which have truthfully helped me a great deal when it comes to Wedding Filmmaking. I am currently in the middle of editing my first wedding video, and I have been pulling my hair trying to find adequate information on music licensing, look no further. Thank you Matt, for openly sharing what you know, and thank you for doing it humbly and plain out fun.
I am a brand new videographer from MN and I have been LIVING off your videos. You have been such a massive help to me as I get my feet wet in this new adventure. I appreciate all your videos more than you know, and I have learned SO much. I have a long way to go before my videos look anything like yours, but each video I watch of yours helps me that much more. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
Matt...I discovered your channel a couple days ago as I'm just now getting into wedding films and I'm wishing that I found your videos so much sooner. I normally do 1 or 2 camera livestreams of music events & the occasional music video. I'd always avoided wedding films just because I never knew where to begin and was always afraid of messing up. If I'd starting seeing your stuff earlier then I probably would've made the jump sooner. I'm still a little apprehensive here but all of your information is both helping me become more knowledgeable and giving me a little more confidence. Thanks man!
Matt: Terrific video...again! You put so much work into your videos, and give so much value to the community with them, and always do it in a concise yet fun way. Kudos to you! Cheers!
Any newer videos about the same title since this was 6 years ago. Would love an updated version of this video. Also what are your thoughts about epidemic sound?
THANKS SO MUCH for taking the time for this vid Matt!!! Filmed my first wedding (for free) this past weekend and I am trying out soundstripe with the discount code. I've got two more paying jobs if this one turns out well!!
Fyrfly's sub is now $200 a year, except popular tracks are now $35 dollars per song on top of that instead of $10. Thought Id leave that here for anyone else watching this video a few years later.
Your channel is just great. I don't do wedding videos but do some videos for a ministry and your tips is just awesome. Started watching today your channel and cant stop hehehe.
Just getting started with weddings and your channel has helped... ALOT! I just recently subscribed to soundstripe and used your code. I hope that helps you somehow. Thanks for everything you do, bud. I am sure these videos are not easy to put together and put out, but you do it anyway... which makes you pretty awesome... thanks again, man....
As someone who only has Filmstro, yeah it does have that awesome ability to compose it yourself, but I feel like it is just lacking something. When I go to Artlist's website I just say yes, this is awesome stuff. I have the yearly subscription for Filmstro, but I think when it comes down to the end, I might be picking up ArtList instead. If you are interested in Filmstro, I would recommend the monthly before the yearly to see how you like it.
THANK YOU FOR THISSSSS SO MUCH!!! I am new to this career so I am really glad we live in a world where we can learn from other pros in the field. I'd go to school but I feel like you and others who share these tips is 10000000x more helpful and relevant.
Hey Matt, if someone hasn't already mentioned it, Pond5 has some GREAT affordable instrumental soundtracks for under $50. Most are in $20-$45 range! Very noteworthy.
SUBSCRIBED! This is the third video of yours I have seen and I love your content! You have a lot of useful information and a great personality. Keep it up!!
I am SO GLAD I found this video, and your channel for that matter. Thank you so much for the amazing information. I will definitely be learning a lot from you.
You hit the nail on the head. I have filmed upwards of 50 weddings in the past 15 months, and I have used almost every single site you mentioned on here. Fun fact if you have been using songfreedom, they are cutting their frequent users a break and only charging something like $330/yr for the next 3 years. Music Bed is the go to site for me. Artlist needs to get better stuff right now I think its kinda stuck in the corporate stuff that premium beat is. Solid list you built here Matt, and great last name ;)
Hey Matt! I have a UA-cam fitness channel and was looking into Soundstripe, but I was curious if you've ever used it and had any issues with the ContentID flags? I was reading their information and it says that most of their artists run their music through Content ID. I had an issue with UA-cam flagging one of my videos last month thinking I was another fitness channel and it was a painful process (mainly just painful in the fact that I had to sit and wait and there was nothing I could do during my dispute except for wait for the video to be reviewed and be released so I could make it public). I don't ever want to go through that again and that worries me a little bit about Soundstripe. Thanks so much! Love the video!
Yes it was really helpful I gave you a thumbs up. This video came just in time because I have my first wedding coming up next month. I have been learning a lot from your videos. 👍👍👍👍.
Matt thank you so much for this video, it's been very helpful, additionally that promo code for soundstripe is still available and is awesome, thank you so much man, I love what you do, you are an inspiration for me!! :D
Thank you for this video!!! I am debating weather to film my own wedding to save money or hire a professional to do it. This video was super helpful for the music part so thank you .
Does anyone know if you're still allowed to use the song after the subscription has ended or are you only allowed to use the song while you have the subscription? (Soundstripe, artlist)
+Tech Notice hey! Yes, any songs you license from Sound Stripe or Art List will still be legally licensed by you even if you cancel your membership to those sites.
Thanks for all of the suggestions here Matt. So I've spent a lot of time browsing over the past few days and have concluded certain sites are more suited for specific genres. I have to say while there are some really great song selections there are also some really not so great tracks out there (to be nice). Trying to sift through all of the music is putting a damper on my work flow. Have you ever found yourself 2-3 hours after auditioning tracks not feeling like anything is fitting the vibe you are attracting for a section of your film? I have the first half of my video figured out but cannot find an upbeat track that blends a pop element with dance/electr. for the life of me. While there are plenty of songs that filter to these specs I'm not feeling much of what I'm finding. I'm frustrated, can you tell?!
Hey Blake! That’s definitely happened to me before, I feel your pain hahaha. I would recommend reaching out to the music licensing sites, a lot of them will help you find songs in their libraries that fit what you’re looking for. They don’t charge for this. Has saved me many times
Hi, matt really liked your video. I have a question kindly help me out. you didn't mention licencing of the sound stripe site. does it give licence for commercial use of songs also? and how many times we can use one song. i am a bit confused regarding which site to join. please help me out. I am not a wedding editor but i mostly edit corporate adds and interviews. please help me out.
can anyone suggest a site which doesnt include a membership? where i can purchase a song license? i don't do a lot of commercial videos and the pricing for memebership is just far too expensive..
What about cover songs? Say the band playing at the wedding is covering a song that you get in the video. Do you have to mute that or how does that work for licensing? Same question for a video of just a cover song performance. Thanks!
You can tell when someone builds a video around a song cause it fits with the beat and flows with the hills and valleys the other way around will make you think a cut is coming and wont be there. The flow will be rough. Pick the song first
how do you keyword your audio? is there a program where you can keyword it in like you can for stockphoto and video? Or do you need to work with text files?(wich would be very time consuming)
man i loved your channel i binged watch a lot of videos.... you helped me a lot.. one thing i have a question about is at 12:22 you said that soundstripe have categories that makes things easier so we dont have to dig in the site to find something that fits a wedding,,, but i really dont see that should i be a member and pay the 135 a year to have the ability to do that or what?
Hello Matt, I recently just found and started watching you and Craig Adams. As a result the two of you have inspired me to start my own UA-cam channel. I have been doing photography for about 15 years, and video for five. As you know, you are constantly learning and evolving. I'm not a beginner, but I have learned so much from watching you and Craig, so maybe somebody can learn from me as well. However, my channel will also have a few other things besides film and photography, kind of what Craig is going to start after announcing his leaving his Wedding Film School channel Anyway, I have a question, if you have answered it, I am sorry. direct me to the answer. But lets say you purchase a license, but your client does not like the song? Of course you paid for it, and now you have to go purchase a new one. But you can pocket the original one and use it for another wedding, but do you begin to start charging them if they go through a couple of songs you purchased license for, but decided they do not like them? Also, how many edits do you allow, if needed or wanted by the client after you have completed the video? What is your rate for additional edits?
+Cricket Estrada hey thanks so much! If I license a song and the client doesn't like it then I'll pay and license another because it means I failed at getting to know them and what they like. My goal is to know them well enough that I license songs that they will love. If I don't them in not doing things right. I've never had to change a song, and re-edits are rare and usually to just add small things. I don't charge for small re-edits.
Thanks Matt. I understand and completely agree. That's how I operate, small and personal. I have been doing photography for over 15 years and have kept my operation small and sort of a Ma Pa type. I suppose when it does happen, you will do the same as you said and use that other song some other time. If there is one thing I have learned in my 25 years in the wedding industry, if you do it long enough, everything will eventually happen, including a customer not liking a song. Thanks again.
Hi Matt, is there any way you can you use a couples first dance song in the wedding video while they’re dancing to it. Or does the music recorded need to either be licensed fully or muted and replaced?
Hello Matt thanks for a good video. Still i cant find the song im looking for. The one- kodaline or You are the reason, calumn Scott is there any way or getting the lisence or am i allowed to just link youtube links etc if i like to post it on youtube or write the name of the soong in my video ? I dont know what to do at the moment please help me.
how about Epidemic Sounds?? Not even in conversation?? :) I was about to try cancel my Artlist sub and switch to epidemic sounds but decided to stay here because of the licensing flexibility
Hey.. im leaning towards sound stripe for its licensing features (corporate + youtube for my friends) but i tried the 1 month trial of EpidemicSounds and the selection is nice.. just not sure if i have to pay extra for corporate videos that i’ll be making incase the post it on facebook

Hey! I wouldn’t risk using copyrighted music. Reach out to the music licensing sites I link to and ask if they have any songs that sound similar.
how about Epidemic Sounds?? Not even in conversation?? :) I was about to try cancel my Artlist sub and switch to epidemic sounds but decided to stay here because of the licensing flexibility
Hey! Haven’t had a chance to use Epidemic much yet.
Hey.. im leaning towards sound stripe for its licensing features (corporate + youtube for my friends) but i tried the 1 month trial of EpidemicSounds and the selection is nice.. just not sure if i have to pay extra for corporate videos that i’ll be making incase the post it on facebook
YEAH!! thanks for the video!! Just made my life easier!!
