Nice! Great review. Even if the Quest Book itself had some minor flaws and omissions, its just nice to see Stephen Backer hit it out of the park with a brilliant set of quests. I always loved his simple and creative approach to Quest Design you see in the Game System, the Quest Packs, the Adventure Design Kit and this book. My favorites advice from him are "Give each adventure that one memorable thing players will talk about well after the game concluded" and "if you use each piece of furniture sparingly it will appear more interesting" which you can see in his works. That Lightning Bolt Spell Scroll card should never be under estimated. A powerful Chaos Spell in the hands of the players can do a lot of damage in the right moment. "Oh no! I am happier with this box than the previous one. I like the warlock more than the "serenade orc" and having two gargoyles gives me the opportunity to paint them differently. The dice are the ones I like the most so far. I haven't been able to play yet, but the miniatures already had their first adventure when my son lost a zombie just 15 minutes after opening the box (the undead was found safe and sound after a looong search, fortunately).
Jeez I hate UA-cam censorship, ok 2nd try. I'm in Australia, got my copy few days ago. Got my from -Am a Z0n- (American) with something else. They currently have Prophecy of Telor and Spirit Queens Torment for $34usd each without shipping. 68usd = approx 103aud.
yay. Just got it too. one of the hammers of the fire-orcs was already broken... a bit sad... but whatever. Also anoyed by the lack of overlay. Wonder where could i find it?
I must to confess that I'm itching to pick this expansion as well as the Spirit Queen's Torment (and the Path of the Wandering Monk)... But I think I will hold until I find some good sale discount. Last time I picked The Frozen Horror, The Mage of the Mirror and Rise of the Dread Moon for 120€ (shipping and VAT included). Not a bad price, but not a great deal either. And I didn't even finish the Core game quests yet. So by the time I finish Kellar's Keep (which will take another 16 quests), I should find some nice discounts.
The HeroQuest expansions are coming out incredibly fast, and if you can hold off buying them that is probably a good idea. I know that just before Christmas in the UK it was possible to get pretty much every release up to Dread Moon at 50% off. An expansion like Kellar's Keep for less than £13 is an incredible deal.
Excellent review love this set… so it’s going to be a purchase from me love the different sculptures for the creatures a fine addition to the core set when it comes to variety. I found the abominations a little bit frustrating when playing sometimes the original sculpture is a great pose arm up trident slung back. But he’s a bit awkward in some of the tighter rooms 👍👍 love the warlock another addition to heroes and the dices again they look lovely to use for each character for sure 👍👍👍 keep these reviews coming. Can you imagine If IH did a remake of Space Crusade.
Thanks for watching. It's a nice set, and I like a lot about it. I definitely prefer the new abominations! Avalon Hill have addressed Space Crusade in the past, and they did say it wasn't something they would do. Maybe they will change their mind one day.
I have my own thoughts on lil' miss Warlock, but I'll save those for your other video. 😅 But I will say, as a big fan of Halloween, I love the colour scheme of this pack. The Orange dice are, by far, my favorite set! ❤
@@genghisgahan9623 I think I know which kind you mean. Chessix does this set in standard 7 dice and cubes of d6's. That combo would look great as HQ Combat Dice!
Okay, this looks a lot more hopeful than SQT. Thanks a lot for the review! It's really weird that these two expansions came out roughly at the same time. It's pretty clear that SQT needed more time, so what's the rush when you have another expansion coming out anyway?
I think it's significantly better. Neither of the quests were changed all that much from how they appeared during the crowdfunding campaign, so I guess they thought they might as well roll them out together. And to be fair, there are still signs that Prophecy of Telor isn't as polished as it could be either. But I can't talk too much about some of that because of spoilers.
They are just reissues from the crowdfunding Mythic tier. Some minor tweaks and fixes were made to the older versions, but none of the sculpts are new. They were just cast in different colours. These are relatively small and cheap to produce for Hasbro compared to the brand new bigger expansions like Rise of the Dread Moon.
I think it’s a bit of a shame to not make SOME use of the translucent plastic, even if it’s just blocking out the eyes and some space for light piping.. or flaming weapons
I've painted translucent miniatures in the past and kept them translucent - I have several videos on the channel about it - but I'd rather paint them up for regular use. I don't really care for translucent minis.
The knight hero is in the Rise of the Dread Moon expansion. You only get one gender-neutral miniature for it. However, the original retailer exclusive guardian knight did have male and female versions.
Love the videos. The lack of overlays is crackers! I have the Mythic Tier and it includes nice overlays for the Crypt of Perpetual Darkness. I was really hoping this would have corrected the omission for POT. I'm still going to buy it as I'm an idiot who fears he is missing out, but I'm doing it under protest! 😅
Thanks. The omission of any overlays feels a bit cheap, which is weird, because they put the effort in with new dice and the foil finish on the box to make it feel like more of a premium product.
Overlays seem to have been largely forgotten as we have progressed through expansions but they really do have so much potential for reviving the board layout. The heroes always like it when they open a door and find a completely new type of environment.
Yes, there are a few good ones in Ogre Horde, including a massive pit, a narrow bridge, and an outside area that covers a section of the board. Some of the rooms are just for decoration, but even that adds some flavour to the dungeon and plays a part in making it feel like a different environment.
agreed the warlock is better than the orc but being a tiny gnome still doesnt feel very heroquesty to me does the orange plastic make it hard to see the mould lines or is it just the recording?
As I mentioned in this video and the Spirit Queen's Torment video, the translucent plastic makes it difficult to see a lot of the details. If you want to keep them translucent at the very least a wash in the recesses is a good idea to bring out more of the sculpting.
I'm very pleased with the play of this expansion but the lack of overlays is a disappointing failing. I'm also a little disappointed that this is meant not to expect you to have any other expansion and yet uses more furniture than you would otherwise have under those circumstances. The earliest example is in the very first quest which requires three bookcases when you should only be expected to have two. Normally this wouldn't be a problem you'd just repurpose the cupboard and everything's hunkydory, it's already been used on said quest though so you wouldn't have anything left to represent that piece. There are also quests that make use of the entrance and wooden exit doors like from frozen horror but again with nothing to represent them. Over all, for me, while Prophecy of Telor is fantastic it feels like there's a bit of a conflict in this expansion. The new models are awesome, but there aren't enough of them for use where you'd want to use them; I love that the warlock was included alone with a transformation (even if it doesn't really go with the art), but nothing really interacts with the warlock and it seems like the space could have been better used giving players the needed set dressing pieces; the lack of overlays is a real letdown and they would have certainly fit in the box with a centerfold. It really feels like this expansion would have been best served in the formfactor of the bigger boxes to really do it proper justice. A formfactor change, even with the increased cost, would have taken this from a good expansion to a home run. I'm really, really hoping that we will get an announcement of monster packs with more models in the variant plastics we've seen or terrain packs that could include more set dressing and overlays which have been missed but could be marketed as reimagined spaces. Customers would absolutely eat that stuff up.
I'm going to be talking a lot more about the quests in my spoiler-filled video on Wednesday. I'm not too worried about the entrance and exit doors - you can just use regular doors for that - but things like the three bookcases in one quest is a notable oversight. There are also quite a few instances of the quests being a bit slapdash, like the fact there is an early boss enemy with no stat line. Against the Ogre Horde should work as a great variant monster pack thanks to the inclusion of the orc archers, goblin bombers, goblin boomerangs, and undead archers. I can see myself dropping those guys into other quests to mix things up a bit!
Thanks for the review. It's kind of the same as the previous one. Personally, I think HQ has failed to expand the game to make it more interesting. But after all, it's pretty much a kid's game. I actually will go with the Axian Quest decks from now on. So the base stuff for HQ is still valid in that regard. I ordered a bunch of new monsters, heroes and bosses from Etsy and made my own custom cards for those minis. It actually makes the game better than Avalon Hill. I would like some more overlays though, but I guess you make your own as well :). Sold most of my unplayed HQ expansions since I realized I would never play them. But again, the base idea of HQ is great and a pretty open book for your own ideas and design. I also got a bit suspicious about Avalon Hill's hints on gender politics in HQ which base assumptions are pretty fishy. But that is another story. But I would prefer politics kept away from board games.
Obviously there are parallels with Spirit Queen's Torment: Translucent minis, a hero, dice, and a quest. However, to me Spirit Queen was quite poor and almost felt a bit like fan fiction, treading on areas of the lore that I don't think they were handling well. This one is significantly better, and feels like it is tied to the core game more effectively. It was also part of the crowdfunding campaign for the return of the game so was never designed to push the limits of the design with a lot of new rules and expanded ideas. It was more like a quest to show some of the inventive ways you could use those core game assets.
They did do some updates, but I don't have an exact list because I never had the original versions. I know that someone online went through and listed all the differences, and you can download updated versions of the books from the Hasbro website direct.
£27 for all the stuff you get in the box 12 miniatures and GW charges £22 for one tiny WHQ mini. I'm convinced HQ has now more expansions than WHQ lol.
Even with my glasses on holding this thing under my brightest light I still don't see anything screaming "female." You can argue a more pronounced chest area, I suppose, but it's not obvious that it's not just a muscular chest or armour design. It's clearly a different armour design, and the model is more lithe, but I don't think if I put it on the table my players would go, "oh look, a female dread warrior." The sculptor has given the piece a more sleek look while sidestepping some of the more obvious ways that sculptors will often depict a female knight (which, by the way, I do not consider a bad thing).
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring That’s the great thing about HEROQUEST, there is lots of room for interpretations. Great video as always, I’ll look forward to more of your Heroquest content. I am actually just about to watch your video Against the Ogre Horde.
im not sure how i feel with these quest packs getting re released from the Kickstarter i got the mythic tier with everting i feel like i just wasted my money because it seems nothing is exclusive now. i got that for the exclusive stuff
While I understand your perspective, you did do well with your purchase for a number of reasons. 1. Exclusives - Some items were exclusive, such as the miniature for Sir Ragnar and Mentor. Those will never be released. You got the alternative gender miniatures which have never been released, and at retail the miniature for the druid was changed. Also, all of the stretch goal monsters are currently only available at retail in translucent plastic, while you got them in solid colours. At the moment the dragon and Crypt expansion is still not available either. 2. Early access - You had access to these expansions a good two years before anyone at retail. 3. Low cost - The Mythic pricing was well below the RRP just for the core game, Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord, so you got a good deal there. Ultimately, a lot of people weren't allowed to back the crowdfunding campaign as it was region locked, and I think it is reasonable to allow those fans to have access to all this cool stuff. Providing these expansions at retail is good for the game, and helps to ensure longevity, which is good for all the fans.
Frankly, I do not understand why AH/Hasbro does not just learn from the community. They should provide overlays for download, I mean honestly, even I can produce an overlay in a few minutes, using just PowerPoint... So if an overlay would be useful or is blatantly necessary AH should provide it. And in today's world, we would even accept it if it was just a download and print yourself.

Did they fix misprints and errors in the quest book ?
They did do some updates, but I don't have an exact list because I never had the original versions. I know that someone online went through and listed all the differences, and you can download updated versions of the books from the Hasbro website direct.
£27 for all the stuff you get in the box 12 miniatures and GW charges £22 for one tiny WHQ mini. I'm convinced HQ has now more expansions than WHQ lol.
HeroQuest are great expansions for what you get.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring that is true you get plenty of stuff fir the price. But I agree more overlays are needed just to change the board up a bit.
Another great video. Thanks for the shout out on the Dread Warrior, check the breastplate for confirmation on gender.
A download would certainly be better than nothing, but honestly, that should be in the box.
I 2nd the Master Dungeon Pack with veriant baddies :D
I know it's not the hardest thing to come up with some stats and rules for variant monsters, but it would be cool to have something official.
