I've been trying to fight the urge to get this after first learning about this from the SUSD video, but you finally pushed me over the edge. Thanks... 😆 (And WOLF PACK)
You can really see people never having played briscola in their lives here. It's one of the og trick taking games (at least here in Italy it's the OG) on which tons of other new ones are built upon (and many reviewers outside of Italy mostly don't know about it either). In briscola is all about bluffing, and using the cards in your hand the best you can and at the right moment, its more of a limited amount of resources in your hand that you have to handle properly to maximize their effects. The fact that the game EVEN gives you ways to not play briscola (copying an action, seizing or pivoting) for me is a huge leap towards the players to help them have agency in their plays even if their hands aren't the best, not even talking about all the other parts of this game that derive from this first part (the actions and the resources for example). Not all games are meant to have linear amounts of actions for all players at all times (Terraforming mars come to mind where you each get 2 actions per turn but if other players pass completely you can keep going until you have money/actions/stuff to do), and if it's not for you it's ok, but you can't simply say something is bad because you have no experience with it or aren't used to it
Wolf pack. You have the best footage of Arcs on the Internet right now. Great review. I wish this had a solo mode so I could just play it way more because it's great. :) I wanna try the campaign.
@@TimChuon I am. But… I never really got a group together for Root. So really wondering if I might be able to do so for Arcs. Or I should just play this solo or with two players.
Yeah but Turkiye fihas forbidden buying anything from abroad and still i cannot find any other eay to get the game. I hope someone brings with case or whatever. Until then i will play blood rage more and more
There is interaction in combat, Arcs just simplifies and balances this by ensuring that any dice roll is fair to both players, and your defensive moves come before you’re attacked (either by how you position your pieces or through the “power ups” you pursue). I think this approach actually helps speed up the game and decreases the chances that sheer luck leads to a blowout during combat.
I actually really like the attack system. The defender doesn't do much but the attacker can sometimes get hurt pretty badly. In some battles the attacks can be more beneficial to the defender than the attacker which is really fun.
WOLF PACK!!! Awesome, awesome looking game! Christmas is coming up, my birthday is coming up - something tells me I will be playing this soon :) :) Woooo!!! Can't wait!!
I absolutely loved this game! I’ve had games where I win at chapter 2, I’ve had games where no one was collecting points, low resource, high resource, games where we fought for the court and games that ended with few ships on the map. Though if I would find a flaw in it is that it makes my strategic brain tingle too much and I end up destroying my fellow players in their first times.
I just got to play my first game of arcs and maybe this is recency and winner bias but, I think combat is fine the way it is. Like every action in the game, it isn't suppose to be mechanically complex. But unlike actions such as build or repair, the complexity comes from the combination of preparation steps to get there. You may have timed your move in a way where they didn't see it coming and now they are getting taxed to hell while a fight was going on in a gate on the far side of the map to cut off catpulting while you control the gate going the other way around the board. Or you forced your opponent's hand to roll all raid die because you chose the keeper ambition on the second to last turn after robbing them of the initiative and hoarding most of the relic resource... That's all fine because now they are distracted so you can move your ships onto their planet to take control and build a city on their last available space. These situations could have arose from the fact that this was the first time we all played this. However, I also feel like combat was done this way to make sure you can't really just turtle. The attacker has the advantage and the puzzle is around the prep work to mitigate and retaliate. The strict limit on resources available and what you can hold also make it less appealing to gang up on one person. So I do find it exciting even though I'm not a fan of how dice are typically used in games where your actions are really limited by bad rolls. *cough* CATAN *cough*.
The action selection is somewhat reminiscent of rising sun, with everyone getting a turn to execute a certain action to it's fullest. The drafting and trick taking makes it much more complicated, and the dice make it much more random, so idk if I'm convinced
It's not complicated at all, dice aren't very random when you look at their faces and the playing of cards will feel natural as breathing by the third round. Very simple game with a lot of room for mastery
Another amazing looking game I wish I had time for. Here's hoping it's still on shelves several years from now when I have more time for these big games again! (kids)

@laxuscloud2495 haven't played AE, and I agree Dune imperium has an excellent combat system, it's always very tense! I'm not sure how Roots is better though? It's still basically the attacker making one roll and resolving immediately? And justi like Root the units have to die before the buildings. The difference is as the attacker you can choose the dice and therefore the odds before attacking which is very dynamic and interesting in my opinion! Unless you don't like the idea of feel-bads through raiding, but in Root (which I love, by the way), almost every faction gets a huge setback by being attacked in some way (turmoil, vagabond mortally has to skip a turn, moles/ lizards/WA literally all lose future actions). Dune Imperium has the combat cards that can completely pull the rug out from under someone, let alone stealing the conflict rewards out from under them. That's what makes it so exciting but also can lead to some horrible feel bads, so if you like those, I assume you don't have too much issue with aggression/ meanness in conflict games. I'm not sure what you wouldn't like about Arcs' combat if you like those since it had similar DNA to both.
Can't resist watching the video for the production but this game is just not for me - too much take-that. Would love to try someday but never will own.
