@@timhonigs6859 Not really. If anything, it would make more sense if you are familiar with the original Universal Frankenstein movies. But even then, Young Frankenstein is just insanely funny even without full context.
It’s a masterpiece of comedy. With a colossally funny cast: Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Kenneth Mars, Madeline Kahn, Peter Boyle.
Honestly, I think it is Mel Brooks’ finest work. Even uses some props from the Universal Frankenstein films. They found them in a guy’s garage.

@@RedKytten You know what's kinda sad, though? Many of the jokes in that movie go over younger people's heads, because of the "slang" of the time. Certain language is out of favor (even when only making a joke), so they fall flat.
Words shouldn't be used to denigrate someone, I agree, but in the context of a joke there is no malice intended.

@@RedKytten Exactly. I don't know about you, but I grew up listening/watching "counter-culture" comedians like George Carlin, Redd Foxx, Sam Kinison, Richard Prior.... all those guys. Growing up at a time when "integration" was becoming mainstream, I got to see life from many different viewpoints (especially in Sit-Coms). Most of them created/written/produced by Norman Lear. As much as it annoyed the "older generation" in my home, it highly influenced me (and my peers) of being more integrated (both racially and culturally), while still being able to use the "older slang terms" without the sting of actual hatred and bigotry behind them. Somehow, as exposed to the racism and bigotry as Generation X was at the time, many of us saw just how stupid it was and ignored it.
I'm an "early Gen-Xer (1967)" and grew up in the 1970s, and coming of age in the 1980s. We laughed at ourselves as much as we laughed at one another. But also, if we hurt someone's feelings, we apologized and made it clear that hurting them wasn't the intention, just to make them laugh and feel like "one of our friends".

Must Watch Mel Brooks movies: Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, History of the World Part I, Spaceballs, The Producers. High Anxiety is also great, but you should probably watch some Alfred Hitchcock movies first to fully appreciate it, especially Vertigo, Psycho, and The Birds. I also love To Be or Not To Be, which he did not direct or write. It is a remake of a Jack Benny movie and he co-stars with his wife, Anne Bancroft.
It took years after I first saw this movie for me to mature enough to get, "Married, in a hurry! Please invite me to the briss."
The implication is that if they need to get married in a hurry, she must already be pregnant.

RIP to Richard Lewis. I used to watch his stand-up routines in the 80's. His gimmick was that he was very neurotic and he joked about his therapist a lot and how he, himself, couldn't deal with everyday life. Very funny guy, who I've heard was working up until his death. Glad his life was well lived. BTW, when I watched this for the first time on DHS that "I can't swim! I'm drowning!" scene literally had me crying and gasping for breath! It was just so unexpected. Genius writing and visuals!

Lesson 1 about Mel Brooks. He breaks the fourth wall every chance he gets. Sometime he runs out of fourth walls and has to break third walls.
And he almost always fits himself into the movie.
“I challenge you to a duel!!” (Slaps Robin with a glove). (Robin picks up an armored glove and slams it across the face). Duel over.

The executioner in this movie was played by the same actor who was the hangman in Blazing Saddles, wearing the same full medieval costume in a western setting. Prince John's movable mole is a throwback to Young Frankenstein where Igor's hunchback strays from side to side.
Mel Brooks at his finest is both Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Blazing Saddles is a spoof on western movies but also a serious social commentary on the stupidity of racism. Young Frankenstein is brilliant on its own but I would recommend watching the Boris Karloff Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein to understand some of the reference jokes.
Also recommended would be this Robin Hood, Spaceballs, the almost forgotten Silent Movie, and The Producers.
15:15 - Chappelle's character was referencing the Woody Harrelson & Wesley Snipes basketball comedy, White Men Can't Jump (1992). Definitely add that to your reaction list!
36:12 - The moving mole was the joke. The subtle and indirect visual changes are part of this comedy genre's gags.
More than that, it was a reference by Richard Lewis to Marty Feldman switching which shoulder had a hump in Young Frankenstein.

I really love this movie.
The moving mole gag is a 37:16 call-back to Igor's hump shifting from side to side in "Young Frankenstein"... the camera crashing through the window comes from "High Anxiety"... Dick Van Patten's cameo as the Abbot is a nod to the fact that he played Friar Tuck in "When Things Were Rotten" (Mel Brooks' Robin Hood spoof on TV)... and oh yeah, the Abbott and Costello parody!

In Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Kevin Costner tried at first to fake an English accent but was so bad at it that they threw in the towel. Hence the "unlike other Robin Hoods" jab.
They sent a message by fox because fax hadn't been invented yet.
The "magic pill" that saved the princes life was literally a Life Saver, peppermint I think.
The moving mole? Seems to be an ongoing Mel Brooks gag. In Young Frankenstein, Igor (pronounced EYE-gore) had a moving hump.
The thing about Mel Brooks' stuff is, as well as the satire and genuine wit, _no_ fruit is too low-hanging - it's like he's constitutionally incapable of leaving any joke unmade, regardless of how groan-worthy. If you're OK with - or even actively _pro_ :) - that you'll likely love his movies ("Young Frankenstein", "Blazing Saddles" and "Spaceballs" are probably my faves but this one's very much in the mix too).
No fruit is too low-hanging...should have warned Mr. Hilltop.
They also added some references/parodies to other Robin Hood movies, like the poses Robin strikes and the thing with the chandeliers for example. Even how they try to make Robin miss the target in the archery contest is from Disney's animated Robin Hood.
A good film to jumping into Mel Brooks. Definitely look into more of his films, absolute legend.

The “patriot arrow” is a parody of the Patriot missile which is an anti-missile defense system used by the US starting in the Gulf War (early 1990s, right before this movie came out). It’s basically a missile that can be fired to intercept other missiles and can sort of “track” where the other missile is going so that it can intercept and destroy them.
OMG, you did not just say this is your first Mel Brooks Movie!!? You have to Watch "Blazing Saddles" (as long as you don't get offended by comedy), Young Frankenstein (another of my top ten of all time favourites), "The Producers" (another where you just have to go with the comedy and not get upset), "Spaceballs" (as it seems you love Start Wars, this one is a must see) and lastly (for me) "High Anxiety"

This is my #1 Favorite movie of All Time. Watched it with my dad when I was young and it just holds such a strong nostalgia, comforting, goofy vibe. I’m so happy you loved it!! Cary Elwes plays the lovable rogue so perfectly, I wish he had gotten typecast so we could have had even more performances like this and Princess Bride.
In Blazing Saddles, there is a Hangman in it that is played by the person that played the hangman in this movie. Mel Brooks was know for having some of the same actors returning for other movies.
The "I can see" bit was eerily similar to the Batty scene in Ferngully which came out the year before.
Isaac Hayes (Asneeze) voices Chef in South Park, and appears in Stargate in (I think) the last season.

Blazing Saddles was made in 1974 and is well worth watching. The mole joke goes back to a gag from the movie Young Frankenstein another movie well worth watching. There were a lot of people from both movies but the most recognizable one was Gene Wilder. Another spoof movie that does have Alan Rickman in it is the movie “Galaxy Quest”. If you haven’t watched it yet you should.

Rickman really made the role his own. The only model he could have used was Basil Rathbone’s “Sir Guy” villain from the original “Robin Hood” (1938), but Rathbone’s performance was relatively understated, with no flamboyance or frippery.
If you do Mel's Silent Movie, there is only one word in the whole movie and it comes as a total shock because of the person who said it.
I was in high school when that movie came out and I watched it in the theater. When the word happened I burst out laughing, everyone else in the theater was silent. I was surprised nobody else got the joke and the first thought that went through my head was Harvey Korman in Blazing Saddles saying "Schmucks" 😆

The man who plays The Sheriff Of Rottingham is Roger Rees. He was a versatile comedic/dramatic actor of stage and screen. He appeared in everything from Dickens adaptations to Cheers and The West Wing.

I'm glad to see you really connected with Mel Brooks' sense of humor. I've seen some reactions where that wasn't the case, but the fact that you enjoyed the movie so much made the reaction itself enjoyable to watch.
All of Brooks' films are worth watching, but Blazing Saddles is probably his most well known and might be his masterpiece. Go into it expecting rather crude humor at times and you'll enjoy it more. Also know that it's completely okay to laugh at *all* of the jokes. They're not intended to be offensive, they're intended to be funny.
Before you watch Young Frankenstein, you might want to watch Frankenstein (1931) at the very least, though there are references to The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Son of Frankenstein (1939), and The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942) as well but they're not really necessary to see unless you want to.
Spaceballs is mostly a parody of Star Wars, specifically the first film, though it also includes some references to Alien, The Wizard of Oz, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, and Transformers. You don't really need to see any of those that you haven't already seen, though it does have a rather large spoiler for the end of the original Planet of the Apes (1968). You should watch that one first or Spaceballs will both spoil the ending of Planet of the Apes and probably confuse you as well.
You can't really go wrong with a Mel Brooks film, but those are the major ones that you have to see.
It really surprised me to realize the actor playing Will Scarlet O'Hara in this also voiced Alan Wake and played Dr Casper Darling in Control.
It's really neat to see what other projects actors have worked on.
There are a lot of late 80s and 90s references in this movie that if you were not around when this movie first released you would miss them.

Spaceballs is a spoof of the Star Wars trilogy and other assorted films in the genre. Young Frankenstein & Blazing Saddles are the best classic Mel Brooks films.

Mel Brooks' style can be very hit or miss. I have one friend that doesn't think any of his movies are funny while all my other friends agree with me that they are always a good laugh though some of his movies I would argue are better than others. But judging my how you reacted to this movie, I think you will love his other movies. Young Frankenstein is one of my all time favorite comedies. But Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles and The Producers are in my top comedy picks.

Other Mel Brooks movies referenced here: History of the World, Spaceballs, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles. For Spaceballs, you should be familiar with The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars Episodes 4 and 5 (obviously), Planet of the Apes (1968), and Alien to catch all the jokes. It's tough watching films that reference earlier films you have not yet seen, then seeing them and getting "AHA!" moments. No spoilers on what exactly will click for you, but hint: characters, actors, dialog, costumes, film techniques, meta-jokes.
Edit: I hope you got The Godfather references and appreciated the famous Dom DeLouise in that role.

Blazing Saddles (1974) is a standalone satire of societal issues, so you don't have any prerequisites for it.
Spaceballs (1987), as you probably know, is a parody mostly of Star Wars (1977), so you're all set for Spaceballs.
Young Frankenstein (1974) is part parody and part loveletter to the earlier Frankenstein works. If you aren't familiar with that, Young Frankenstein will be less impactful.
Some of the jokes in "Blazing Saddles" may go over your head unless you're familiar with Hedy Lamarr, Marlene Dietrich, Gabby Hayes, Randolph Scott, Richard Dix, Mongo Santamaria, Jesse Owens, Douglas Fairbanks, Howard Johnson's Restaurants, Laurel & Hardy, and Olsen & Johnson. But a little time on Wikipedia can take care of that.

Translating humour is hard, sometimes it doesn't do well, but for this movie they nailed it. Watching a movie in english laguage after seeing it translated is almost like watching it for the first time again!

The phrase "walk this way" is from Young Frankenstein and is also used in Spaceballs and History of the World Part 1. And is the inspiration of the Aerosmith song. But you will enjoy any Mel Brooks movie. Dom Deloiuse, who plays Don Giavoni, is in several of Mel's movies.

You can watch it but you did not see all of the spoofed movies yet so you could miss some of the references.
