"Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" had many issues as a movie. Kevin Costner's terrible accent was just one of them.
And it's still pretty good. ;)

I wish all films would focus on the character rather than the accents, particularly with this story where the main character would have spoken French and a form of English much different than now. Only a few actors pull off accents really well anyway, American or British. I prefer the Sean Connery/ Eddie Izzard voice philosophy, this is me, this is my voice, I'm the guy. Deal with it.
The thing about Costner's accent is that he didn't even try. Chris Slater (Will Scarlet) also had a bad aceent, but he at least tried. Costner is the lead actor but he puts in the least effort. "Dragonheart" is another similar movie, the lead actor sounds so American in a cast full of either native Brits or thoss who at least try to sound like Brits.
Back in the day, they sold pantyhose called L’eggs and they were packaged in an egg shaped container. In the movie, that’s what they were referencing when they handed out the tights in the egg shaped containers.
There's a lot of really dated humor in this one. Still a fun movie though.

You can try Kevin Costner's Robin Hood (1991); it's pretty good, it tries to be more serious, but Alan Rickman turns in an AMAZING Sheriff performance. Legendary.

Alan Rickman carried that movie, and arguably the true villain of the story and not the usurper king.
Really shouldnt have watched this movie without watching that one first.
Alan Rickman, Morgan Freeman and the title song "everything i do, i do it for you" by Bryan Adams was the great holds of that movie.
Roger Rees was amazing in this. My all time favorite line is from this movie. "King illegal forest, to pig wild, kill in it a is"

Winston Churchill had a famous WWII speech that had the lines " ... we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."
Malcolm X had a famous speech in 1964 called The Ballot or the Bullet where he said "...the white man has been too clever for us. We have been hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray, run amok." which Denzel Washington dramatized in the 1992 movie Malcolm X to "You've been took. You've been hoodwinked. Bamboozled. Led astray. Run amok!" Just like Dave Chappelle did. Denzel also delivered the line "We didn't land on Plymouth Rock. Plymouth Rock landed on us!" (though not an official Malcolm X quote, people think it is because of Denzel's spot-on performance as Malcolm X).
Mel Brooks is def a history buff and I love when it reflects in his comedy!

Not me. This one is my least favorite of any -- mainly because I Find Richard Lewis highly irritating, and the Sheriff's gag of mixing up words wasn't funny, was awkwardly delivered, and then was beaten long past death.
My favorite Robinhood will always be Disney's animated feature from 1973. Many will disagree, but it holds a special place in my heart. Glad you enjoyed this, you will probably enjoy Space Balls a lot as well, but I will always say The Producers from 1967 is my favorite Mel Brooks movie of all time.

The Errol flynn, the Disney's robin hood, this one and the riddley Scott Robin hood with Russel Crow are my picks for Robin hoods.

This one and Disney's are really my "comfort movie" Robin Hoods ;) Though, more than any of that, I love that I grew up visiting Nottingham (where my Dad grew up), and got to go to the Tales of Robin Hood... darn near every time. I've even got pictures of myself next to the Robin Hood statue in Nottingham in the same pose as the statue, both as a child and as an adult!
Robinhood is an old English folk tale. Events like crossing the stream are all part of the old story. It takes place when Prince John was ruling England while his brother King Richard was away at the Crusades.
The actress that plays Maid Marian is Amy Yasbeck. She is John Ritters widow. This movie is full of early 90’s references, and it makes me laugh every single time. There are soo many lines that my husband and I still say till this very day. Classic Mel Brooks. 😂😂😂😂❤️ glad you watched this one. Lots of lighthearted and silly humor. Blinkin is my favorite. 😂

Slapping a man’s face with a glove was a customary way for a gentleman to challenge another gentleman to a duel. And for a knight to challenge another knight to single combat, he would “throw down the gauntlet.” Mel Brooks combined the two for slapstick purposes.
FYI: the marriage ceremony is in "Pig Latin" - a fictional language that's basically English, but you take the first letter of each word, and put it on the end, then add "ay" to it. So "Pig Latin" in Pig Latin is "igpay atinlay"

Seriously... I'm starting to think about starting a subtitle localization company that doesn't completely wreck important subtitles like that. So aggravating, lol.
I think the neigh/nay thing is actually a funnier joke, but it's definitely some artistic license from the sub company.
It's crazy how almost every other line is a reference to 90's media, especially other movies.

I don't think they make pump shoes anymore. They had a little balloon thing inside that tightened the shoe up around your foot. They sold it on the idea that it somehow also gave you magic trampoline jumping powers too, but it was just a lazier way of tying your shoes than Velcro. And was expensive.

The "theory" was that the air bladder gave extra spring, though A) the bladder was way too small, and 2] the bladder was on the TOP of the foot and tightened in from the tongue of the shoe.
The ACTUAL reason of it's popularity was that you could buy one shoe and it would fit a wide range of feet comfortably because if it was loose you just needed to "pump it up" to have it fit your feet.
Fun fact, the "Unlike some other Robin Hoods" line has a different punchline depending what language you're watching it in.
The animated Disney Robin Hood is great. One of my favorite movies when I was a kid.

Another great reaction. You will like Spaceballs, same sort of Mel Brooks humour. To Be or Not To Be was also very good. Mel Brooks and his wife, Anne Bancroft set during WW2. I would also suggest Top Secret with Val Kilmer. Same sort of humour as well.

Oh man, I did not realize how old and how American most of these references are. When Achoo is getting beaten up and says, "I hope someone is filming this," he isn't wanting to post it online. It's a reference to Rodney King. In 1991, he was severely beaten by the LAPD. Because someone was recording it with a video camera, the country was able to see just how horrifyingly brutal the police were. The acquittal of the officers involved then led to widespread riots in LA.
Then, when Achoo stops to pump up his shoes, those were a shoe in the late 80s and early 90s that had air cushions in the tongue that you could pump up by squeezing part of the tongue on the front that would give the shoe a tighter fight.
This movie is just so much fun. So many quote able moments.
The Robin Hood movies this references the most are The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Disney's Robin Hood (1973) and The Prince of Thieves (1991). If you want to watch Spaceballs, just remember it parodies the Star Wars movies that pre-date it.
For Robin Hood the best one was “The Adventures of Robin Hood” starring Errol Flynn from 1938. The original swashbuckling action movie. Don’t worry it’s in Technicolor.

The al-time best Robin Hood story has Daffy Duck in the lead part. You can't watch Space Balls until you've seen Crimson Tide or you won't get the full effect of the joke.

L'eggs pantyhose used to come in plastic eggs, like the plastic Easter Eggs only a bit larger. They sat in a cardboard base with the logo and size on it, so they wouldn't roll around and you could tell what was in it.

Adding my voice to those suggesting Kevin Costner's, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, it certainly helps bring context to a lot of the jokes in this film! Besides this movie, my favorite Robin Hood is Disney's animated version, very cute and fun, with some great songs!
When Achoo is getting beat up and says he hopes someone's recording it that's not a reference to Instagram (much later), but to the video tape of the Rodney King beating in Los Angeles in 1991, which was one of the first times the public saw a recording of police brutality and a gang of "white" LAPD officers beating up a "black" suspect they had been chasing. The officers later acquittal led to huge riots in LA in 1992.
Achoo taking a time out when he's running out of air isn't a gag about getting "pumped up" figuratively... there were these shoes that came out in 1989 that were very silly but in spite of an exorbitant price tag also very popular called Reebok Pumps... they had a little air pump on the tongue the idea was that you pumped air into them for extra cushioning was supposed to make them more comfortable and give you more support and probably jump higher or run faster or some such nonsense but it was obviously just a dumb gimmick. I think Nike was the first company to make shoes with air pockets in the soles... first the Tailwind in 1978 and later on the Nike Air. So it was a riff on that concept.

To really get most of the jokes in this, you should watch the two best Robin Hood films. The 1930's Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn (many of the scenes are direct parodies of this) and the 1990's Kevin Costner movie, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Big Yay Mary for watching this one - 1 of My Favorite All-time Mel Brook's films. Definitely watch Spaceballs when you get a chance. Its a awesome Spoof movies on Star Wars. Has some good actors in it too - Bill Pullman (president from Independence Day) John Candy (Planes, Trains, & Automobile,, rs Uncle Buck) and Rick Moranis (Ghostbusters). Also, Mel Brooks plays a role in it too like in Many of his movies.......Cheers from the US.

Fun fact: yes full plate armor is heavy, however properly made armor is suspended off of your hips and shoulders in such a way as to not hinder you to the point of exhaustion! It's comparable weight to a firefighters suit or a modern infantry mans kit.

My favourite Robin Hood movie is easily Robin and Marian (1976) with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn. A touching, grown-up film about the two characters being older, but not always wiser; the regrets and faded glories colouring their middle age. Highly recommended.
That "Hey Abbot" bit..my brother and I used rewind and play it on the vhs so much that it screwed the tape up lol. We laughed until we couldn't breathe anymore...just the way he says it lol
The screaming boy who runs up to Robin is a parody of Kevin from Home Alone. The bald guy who proposes the archery contest is a parody of The Godfather. Both speeches in the woods had parts taken from actual speeches. When Mel Brooks shows up driving the wagon and he asks something like "Faigelers?", he's basically asking if "merry" means they're gay.
When this movie came out, I saw it before my friend. He was quite familiar with the story of Robin Hood and he asked who they got to play King Richard. I told him "Some British guy." He was surprised when Patrick Stewart showed up. Technically, I told him the truth. :)
This movie takes its plot points from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, in which Robin is held by the Turks, escapes with a Muslim who accompanies him to England to fulfill his debt. Kevin Costner spoke American English throughout. Hence, the quip about speaking with an English accent!
Fun fact: I went to high school with the actress playing Marion here.

15:30 "White Men Can't Jump" was a basketball comedy from the year before this film (1992) costarring Wesley Snipes (you've seen him in Demolition Man) and Woody Harrelson (he was in the Hunger Games franchise) as street hustlers.

Definitely my *all-time fun and amazing* second favorite Robin Hood film, tied with the Kevin Costner film.

“Men in Tights,” like a lot of Mel Brooks movies, likes to riff on a lot of films and ideas, but is also a parody of “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” starring Kevin Costner. That movie was a huge hit at the time (also gave us Bryan Adams’ smash hit “I Do It For You” but can feel too serious for its own good. Alan Rickman’s turn as the Sheriff is iconic, though, and is probably worth watching just for that.
If you are doing a Robin Hood series, I recommend that you include the Disney animated version. There were well-known voice actors galore. You won't recognize them, probably, but you're enjoyment won't be diminished. See you at the baby shower.
Hahahah I'm glad you had fun with it. Mel Brooks movies are often parodies that roast a specific genre and make use of current (when they were made) pop culture references. For this, the main parody is 1991 Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I'd also recommend the old Errol Flynn from 38, the 73 Disney cartoon as ancillary references. There are other things, but thats the main. Then watch this again (on your own) and enjoy all the references.
If you want to get ahead of references for Mel Brooks movies, here are my recs - my feelings won't be hurt if you don't lol, just suggestions - have fun!
Spaceballs is riffing on 70s scifi, mainly the original Star Wars movie, but it also helps to have seen Alien and Planet of the Apes. Which i think you've seen them all so you're gtg there.
For Blazing Saddles, it's old westerns. the main parody is based on Destry Rides Again. You could actually add a lot, Rancho Notorious, High Noon, Stagecoach... but idk. There's a lot of moving pieces including nonwesterns like other Marlene Dietrich movies Stage Fright or Morocco. I wouldn't go too hard. Watch Destry and maybe a couple others for the vibes.
Young Frankenstein is hitting old Universal monster movies. Mainly the 31 Frankenstein and the 35 The Bride of Frankenstein. There are lots of old 30s and 40s monster movies you could watch just for a fun vibe check, but I think its entirely optional.

Yeah. If you "get" Brooks' humor in Men in Tights, you're gonna love Spaceballs. Mel Brooks isn't for everyone, but those of us who appreciate his humor can't get enough of him. Also maybe check out Young Frankenstein, it's fifty years old but still brilliant.
Men in Tights holds a special place in my heart, my first ever date was when I took a girl to see it in the theater. Also I think it was my first time ever seeing Dave Chapelle.

6:29 Reebok sneakers had a pump in them in the 90s. It was very popular but who knows if it actually helped at all. I think they might still sell a version of it. Ah yes I just checked, they actually have a lot of versions of the Pump. All very expensive.

usually better to watch the original films before the spoof films. but this one is still pretty fun regardless. It is most directly a parody of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves which was a giant hit a year or so before this came out.

I loved the Errol Flynn 1938 version and the Russel Crowe 2010 version also. I have read the book which is a bunch of short stories of Robinhood's adventures.
18:46 Depends on the time, if we are talking when plate armor was first created sure but European blacksmithing is actually heavily undervalued by the average crowd. You can find videos on UA-cam of pretty average guys mounting horses, tumbling and jumping around to show just how mobile knights in plate actually were dispelling the misconception that they were slow or that the armor was heavy.
The Disney animated film Robin Hood starring Brian Bedford, Phil Harris and Andy Devine is my favourite of the Robin Hod films followed closely by Robin and the 7 Hoods starring Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack.

You should have watch Robin Hood Prince of Thief's with Kevin Costner before watching movie because this movie spoof that movie.
You should also watch other Mel Brooks spoof like Spaceballs (original Star Wars trilogy parody) and High Anxiety (Hitchcock classic horror movies spoof), Blazing Saddels (A movie they mention) and History Of The World (Which has the phrase "It is good to be the king"). Fyi the blond kid screaming to the camera is a spoof on Home Alone where the blond kid also scream to the camera.
Mel had already created accurate documentaries with his History of the World, so being 100% historically authentic with this one was actually pretty easy for him.

20:17 In the US, decades ago, nylons were sold in plastic eggs that you would pull apart. The were called L'eggs. I don't know when (or if) they stopped being made, but they apparently were introduced in 1972.
