Love watching you explore these movies for the first time. I would recommend watching the 1938 “The Adventures of Robin Hood” if you want to see where some of the plot and aesthetics that weren’t a parody of Prince of Thieves comes from. Hope you enjoy the recommendation and keep up the fantastic content.
One really funny thing about that line is: Cary Elwes had been in America so long at this point that he had to have voice lessons to re-learn his English accent for the movie.
Fun fact, you asked how where Mel brooks gets his sense of humor, he was a combat engineer for the us army, European theatre. One of his first gags was hooking up a loud speaker and blasting a famous Jewish singer (brooks himself also Jewish) to drown out nazi propaganda. He thought it was hilarious, after the war he wrote “the producers” which features a song called “springtime for hitler”
I've heard that either when they were filming the first movie or rehearsing the stage musical an old man came up to Mel Brooks and said he couldn't portray WW2 like that because "I was in WW2, there's nothing funny about it. To which Mel Brooks replied "You were in WW2? I was in WW2! I didn't see you there!"
It started well before the war. Brooks was a small, weak kid, and the youngest of four brothers in a poor family whose father died when he was two. He dealt with a lot of bullying and teasing growing up, and used jokes and comedy as a way to cope and get out of situations. He turned that into a career in comedy and show business starting at age 14.
This is probably my favorite interpretation of Prince John. “We shall have a wedding, or a hanging...either way, we all have a lot of fun, huh?” (Crowd cheers)

The reason you are always impressed by the production put in to Mel's movies is that he truly loves the genres he's parodying. He's making fun as a fan boy.
The fact that he actually understands the jokes is huge, too. Jesus the amount of people who stare right at 5* jokes with a blank face...oof. Great reaction.
Dick Van Patten was in "Men In Tights: The Series". OK, it was actually called "When Things Were Rotten". It actually was a TV series produced by Brooks way back in the 70s. Dick Van Patten portrayed Friar Tuck. ua-cam.com/video/sh-pHGzmELg/v-deo.html It was cancelled after just one year. Good news for Dick Van Patten; he then got the job on "Eight Is Enough".
This was a parody of both Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, and Olivia DeHaviland from 1938.
Also, it's kind of a remake of an old Mel Brooks tv series about Robin Hood (look it up) - seen the abbot? in that old series he played Friar Tuck. Sadly, he was the only one of the old cast that could return...
Did you notice when Carry Elwes said, “and I can speak in an English accent.” That was a total dig at Kevin Costner for not being able to do an English accent.
It was also directed at Errol Flynn who starred in the classic 1938 version. Much of the story line is actually from that film, like the archery contest and the wild boar on the table.

Blinken can't see because he wears black, not see-through glasses. Glasses up, Blinken sees. Blinken hits the tree, knocks the glasses back down and goes blind.
Just watched this with my son over Thanksgiving. When Blnkin appears, he said, 'It'd be funny if he could actually see, but can't because of the glasses.' I was so proud of him for predicting that so early on.
I always thought it was because he fell out of the tree stand and it joggled his head causing him to be able to see again but when he hits the tree, it makes his vision go away again.
I saw this in theaters with my mother ... Two rows in front of us were two women (who were obviously high) and they fucking loved every second of this movie. It was a blast watching them let loose and it made our experience even better... Needless to say this movie has a special place in my heart.
I think Cary Elwes first learned sword training in The Princess Bride (which came before Robin Hood). From what I read in Cary’s book about making The Princess Bride, him and the actor who played Inigo Montoya were pretty (playfully) competitive about their training so he definitely knows how to handle a sword.
"Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent." was meant as a dig to Kevin Costner's version of Robin Hood because halfway through that movie he lost the accent and spoke without the accent.
I heard that in other countries/languages, that line got changed so that the Costner reference remained clear. (e.g.: "Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I do not dance with wolves.")

you did well to watch "Prince of Thieves" before you turned to this classic. Now you can fully appreciate the satire that went into this. Mel Brooks only would parody what he respected (which is why we never got a "Scary Movie" film by him, he disliked 'slasher flicks'), and it shows in this movie!

Carey Elwes was playing Robin as Errol Flynn. Before you watch this again you have to see the 1938 Technicolor spectacular: "The Adventures of Robin Hood"
I remember seeing this at the movies when it first came out. My friends and I were laughing so hard we were in tears. I'm a huge Mel Brooks fans. High Anxiety, History of the World Part 1, Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein.... he's made so many hilarious movies.
Carey Elwes was actually the first choice for Robin Hood due to his performance in The Princess Bride. He actually hung up on Mel Brooks at 1st because he thought it was a prank call until Mel called him right back.
The actor who played the hangman in this and Blazing Saddles was a close friend of Brooks. He also played the producer who got busted on pedo charges in the movie “Boogie Nights”.
"Deered to kill a kings dare" - I've seen this move quite a few times and been years since I've seen it again, and this joke of getting deer and dare mixed up kind of went over my head at the time, but now hearing it back after so long cracks me up! This whole movie is so good
18:05 I think most people realize he's mimicking England's prim minister during most of WW2, Winston Churchill. Churchill's iconic way of speaking had three causes. He had a minor lisp, he copied some of his American mother's speaking habits and he drank heavily to muster up the courage to speak in public because of the first 2 reasons. That said, the man had a powerful way about him that people listened to. The speech they're poking fun of was actually very important and inspired a lot of soldiers. I learned part of it for an acting class and listened to the last few paragraphs of it (all we had time for) over and over to copy him as best I could. He may have talked a little funny but, the man knew _what_ to say.
"Over that boy hand!" I love this movie so much, it's sheer ridiculousness. It's a pity so few people remember Prince of Thieves nowadays since most of the jokes are based on that movie. Glad you did!
Every time I watch your videos about these classic comedies, I have a constant smile on my face! It always brings me such joy to see people who appreciate these movies as much as I do
Aw man I haven't seen this movie in years! This was a fun walk down memory lane and I was surprised by how many of the lines I remembered. "Call the locksmith!"

Patriot Arrow: the 1st Gulf War was less than two years behind us and out Patriot Missile had been a great success (success rate later revised downward, but as far as our enemies knew, they were fools to try anything when we had Patriots). When the Patriot Arrow hit the mark for Robin, there was cheering in the theaters.
I love that the blind guy's name is Blinkin. The witch was Tracey Ulman. She's funny as hell too. She had her own comedy variety show back in the day which is where The Simpsons first came from. They did little two minute shorts before they had their own show. "Certain? You want certain hire yourself a witch. I'm just your cook. Here, eat this."
I’ve always cried over how in the scene where Rabbi Tuckman says that Robin and Marian would be perfect for each other as their family names were Loxley and Bagelle. LOX AND BAGELS. 🤣😂😭💀 Mel Brooks would always sprinkle and reference Jewish humor in his films.
“A black sheriff???!” And then Blinkin popping in with the American accent “He’s black??!” First time my family watched this, we DIED when we got to this part
This movie was my history. It was being shown in the Netherlands almost every christmas. I always watched it, I could literally say all the jokes by mind :) Good to see that you loved it just as well !
You're probably too young to get the Patriot Arrow joke. Back in the Reagan years there was the Patriot missile or MMA104. It was a surface to air missile designed to shoot down enemy aircraft VERY accurately. It was used in the Persian Gulf War.
I would hope people bring up Dave Chapel being in this movie because it was early in his career and he's a very funny individual - thus adding to the hype and promise of how humorous the film will be. I remember watching this one enough that I had the script all but memorized.

History part 1 should be #1 on the list of Brooks movies due to the lack of reaction for Mel's last joke. Will also make a recent discovery even better (Space Lasers)
@@elvesrus "lack of reaction" also on the fact that the "Men In Tights" song is basically the "Jews In Space" song with different lyrics.
ua-cam.com/video/ZAZhtT-dUyo/v-deo.html
It's good to be the king lol. History of the World is my all time favorite!
I love mel but dead and loving it is the one miss I think he had.
But only watch Dracula dead and loving it when having had a jumbo enema... :D
Great video. Love that you made a disappointed “awww” at the same time as the crowd watching robins song/sword.
Also, watch Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. Martial art movie thats part spoof and part reworking of an actual old martial arts movie
Yesssss!
Shaolin Soccer would be a fun follow up if Kung Pow hits the right notes
@@elvesrus or Kung Fu Hustle
THAT'S A LOT OF NUTS!
I hate both those movies for some reason dont like spoofs of kung fu film
you did well to watch "Prince of Thieves" before you turned to this classic. Now you can fully appreciate the satire that went into this. Mel Brooks only would parody what he respected (which is why we never got a "Scary Movie" film by him, he disliked 'slasher flicks'), and it shows in this movie!
He did parody Hitchcock movies in High Anxiety. That one seems to get forgotten amidst Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, etc.
@@gerstelb Hitchcock was the master of suspense.
This movie is funny even if you never watched the movie being parodied.
He did mock Friday the 13th in Spaceballs.
Another great one by Mel Brooks is “History of the World Part 1”!
the line "its good to be a king" is actually a reference to "history of the world part 1"
Even better was History of the World Of 2 😁
I found out about that movie when my dad off handedly said 'You look like the piss boy' .( As a joke, we are Australian.)
I loved this movie.
This film is hilarious and spoof movies are amazing and your channel is freaking awesome!!!!!!!!! Plus only asking can you react to Bill and Ted's excellent adventure?
Yeah I Will Soon
@@HelloMellowXVI awesome plus one more question when are gonna watch back to the future part 2?
Yeah Once I Get Through A Few More First Time Watchings
@@HelloMellowXVI I've been thinking of rewatching that. I loved it when seeing it in the theaters- as a kid. Curious how it holds up.
they just don't make movies like this anymore.
Watching Mell almost die laughing when he synced with the movie saying "awwww" made my day.
Just wanted to tell you I’ve been binging your videos the past few nights and hearing your joyful laughter, seeing your love for film has put a smile on my face. I’ve been sick the past week and finding your channel has lifted my spirits.
"It's an Everlast 😊"
I've probably seen this movie 25 times...
That line still kills me every time 🤣
Carey Elwes was playing Robin as Errol Flynn.
Before you watch this again you have to see the 1938 Technicolor spectacular:
"The Adventures of Robin Hood"
I remember seeing this at the movies when it first came out. My friends and I were laughing so hard we were in tears. I'm a huge Mel Brooks fans. High Anxiety, History of the World Part 1, Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein.... he's made so many hilarious movies.
15:09 that made me crack up. The genuine confusion and the fact that you said what at the same time as Robin and maid Marion it was priceless
Little John was apparently supposed to be Hulk Hogan, hence the look.
Not the Hulk he was Thor in the return of the Incredible Hulk (Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno)
Carey Elwes was actually the first choice for Robin Hood due to his performance in The Princess Bride. He actually hung up on Mel Brooks at 1st because he thought it was a prank call until Mel called him right back.
I think said he THOUGHT it was a prank call, when really it wasn't. Mel Brooks really did initially call him to ask him for the role.
@@Zodia195 Sorry. Meant to say thought it was a prank. My phone sometimes deletes complete words if I go to erase an error.
The actor who played the hangman in this and Blazing Saddles was a close friend of Brooks. He also played the producer who got busted on pedo charges in the movie “Boogie Nights”.
Cary Ewles, who somehow 30 years later looks 30 years younger than me, was in Princess Bride first, then Glory, Hot Shots, then Men in Tights.
Also somehow works great in SAW a few years later.
This movie was a staple of my childhood. Mel Brookes is iconic. The script, the acting - iconicccc.
Everyone loves Dave Chappelle! And he was so young
Mel Brooks is so AWESOME! He has such a creative mind.
So, now you need to watch Mel Brook's "History of the world" with him and Gregory Hines, you'll be on the floor rolling!
"It's good to be the king!" 👑
‑ Right on the money!
- The Monet, the Monet...
- Don't get saucy on me, Bearnaise!
Dave Chappell said he would never wear a dress but he did wear a dress I. This movie lol
Every time I watch your videos about these classic comedies, I have a constant smile on my face! It always brings me such joy to see people who appreciate these movies as much as I do
Yesss one of the best comdy movies of all time
Saw this when I was like 8, I'm 30 now, watched it many many times. Love it so much
It was so much fun watching you discover this movie. And it's hilarious that you're young enough to have missed some of the cultural references.
Loxley and Bagel, what a match!
Aw man I haven't seen this movie in years! This was a fun walk down memory lane and I was surprised by how many of the lines I remembered.
"Call the locksmith!"
I don't know, if someone told me Dave Chappelle was in a movie I would stop what I was doing and go watch it, and I am white as hell. Dave is just really funny. I have no idea who said that or why, but I wouldn't read too much into it.
Same
The best Robin Hood is with Errol Flynn. Love these types of movies.
Always my favorite too. Then this one next just because it's a guaranteed laugh.
You didn't wear tights for this review. 🤔 I question your commitment.
🤣🤣🤣
When Robin approached Rabbi’s tent to ask him to marry him to Marian, a sign on the tent said (along the lines of) ‘Circumcisions: Half Off’
Makes you wonder; is he referring to the price or the weenis?
@@SerenEirian The world may never know LOL
@@SerenEirian considering it's Mel Brooks we're talking about here I'm going to go with the second option
mel brooks is a comedy genius. dracula dead and loving it/ history of the world will have u rollin on the floor
my favorite part was the return of the "challenge to a duel " metal glove slap. that was brilliant. "I ACCEPT"
So good to see someone else love Mel Brooks' genius and being able to reference his other works and other media as well. Keep up the good work, man.
Love this movie. One of the many great ones that my brother introduced me to years ago. Makes me think of him everytime I see it and brings back great memories. Thanks for watching it and sharing it with us.
Next up:
The Producers (1968)
The Twelve Chairs
Life Stinks
To Be Or Not to Be (1983 - even if it's just to see yet another parody of Hitler singing 'a little piece of Poland)
Silent Movie (literally only one spoken word in the whole movie)
High Anxiety (Mel Brook's tribute to Alfred Hitchcock - though you'll need to see some of him most famous movies first)
Dracula: Dead and Loving It
History of the World Part 1 (and make sure you stay for the trailer for History of the World Part 2)
The Producers (2005 - stay for the song at the end of the credits)
Patriot Arrow: the 1st Gulf War was less than two years behind us and out Patriot Missile had been a great success (success rate later revised downward, but as far as our enemies knew, they were fools to try anything when we had Patriots). When the Patriot Arrow hit the mark for Robin, there was cheering in the theaters.
"A spoon cousin? Why a spoon?"
"BECAUSE IT'S DULL YOU TWIT! IT'LL HURT MORE!" 😂😂😂😂😂
"Robin of Loxley! Where is your king?" "He has been assimilated by the Borg and is leading an assault on Starfleet at Wolf 359."
I love this movie and your reactions dude! I highly recommend History of the World pt 1. Another classic comedy by Brooks.
"It's good to be the King"
The King on Kings. The Game. Triple H.
Mel Brooks would always sprinkle and reference Jewish humor in his films.
It wasn't a mint she gave him, but a Life Saver candy.
Man I love this movie had so many great comedians involved. Rip Roger Rees, so sad when we lost him
Should watch the Hot Shots movies
But only if he’s seen Top Gun first.
My dad introduced me to Mel Brooks movies😂😂😂
This and Spaceballs are classics
Yes! Thats the same hangman! Good eye!
“A black sheriff???!”
And then Blinkin popping in with the American accent “He’s black??!”
First time my family watched this, we DIED when we got to this part
Loving the reactions🤣 havent been feeling too good but seeing you laugh just makes it all better. Thanks.
This movie was my history.
It was being shown in the Netherlands almost every christmas.
I always watched it, I could literally say all the jokes by mind :)
Good to see that you loved it just as well !
You're probably too young to get the Patriot Arrow joke. Back in the Reagan years there was the Patriot missile or MMA104. It was a surface to air missile designed to shoot down enemy aircraft VERY accurately. It was used in the Persian Gulf War.
YAAAASSSSSS....SEEING YOU REACT TO THIS MAKES ME SOOOO HAPPY!
"I hope it don't stink." Killed me. haha
I would hope people bring up Dave Chapel being in this movie because it was early in his career and he's a very funny individual - thus adding to the hype and promise of how humorous the film will be. I remember watching this one enough that I had the script all but memorized.
Some of the inspiration also came from the Errol Flynn version of Robin Hood - especially the sword fighting bits.
