It's really good palm for my 7 zone in Russian Nothern Caucasus. During two waves of cold (to 3F - negative 0,5F) from 8 jan untill 10 feb, my sabal minor was covered with a polypropylene bag and there is no damages at all.
Planted a Sabal Minor in Bavaria, Germany this year. In its first year here, I will give it some protection, but after that I plan to not protect it at all. My climate here is between 6b/7a. During very cold winters, temperature can drop to -20C/-4F, altough that is rare and usually lasts only a day or two. Let's see how the Sabal does here. Everyone here is like "You can't grow palms in our climate here", but I hope I can prove them wrong.
Hello! Can sabal minors grow in Pittsburgh PA? Our lowest temperature was 9 degrees Fahrenheit this winter. It did not ever go below zero here so I’m assuming you can grow them. Just wanted ask if they could. Thanks
You won't be in the clear every year there and should grow a Sabal minor within 2' of the foundation on the South side of your home in full sun. Be prepared to protect if temps go under 0F for best results.
Ok, thanks! My windmill palm grew this year without any protection and I only lost 1 frond. My trachycarpus fortunii is on the east side of my house since the sun rises there and the temperature gets warmer. Would the east side also be good?
We are in 6b can u give me specifics on putting it in the ground ie soil water sunlight, and some speicifics on how to winterize them for winter outside?
I planted a sabal minor in zone 6B back in April. Night time temps here have started dropping below 20 F, which is unusually cold for this time of year. Do I need to cover it when the night time temps are below freezing, or can it be left completely uncovered until about 5 F?
@ thank you for the advice! I built a 2x2’ box for it out of 1” foam insulation. I built the same for my juvenile windmill palm and I have been covering that below 25 F as well and also put string lights inside the box. Hopefully that’s a good set up. I’ll start leaving the sabal minor uncovered then. Thank you for the all the great videos and advice!
I love these palms,I have 2 in my yard, they are still very small (like 18 inches tall).I protect them just like I protect my trachys and yet they loose all fronds after winter. Not sure why it happens.Im in zone 6A/6B.
The ground temperature info out there is very misleading, ground surface temp is milder than the air but dig a hole anything an inch below didn't go below freezing here.
recently just bought a sable minor from Northeast Ohio Palms and I will be planting it soon definitely one of my favorite palms
Cool they had some good ones

Thankyou, so informative, enjoying the map with extended range into Kentucky
Yep it should be ok there

@@TeaandCrumpets2233 East would be 2nd best if in sun all morning
Ok, Thank you!! This helps a ton
Beautiful sabals
Thanks
i just collected some seeds from a cabal near me in palmyra nj
Nice
Is there a reason that you withheld the variety names when you showed off each one (besides Louisiana)?
I didn't want people to get too caught up in trying to get one just like mine because I feel many of the minors are so close
How did you protect you Sabal Minor Variety Louisiana during the winter??
Tied fronds, a cover over stakes and a 90 watt flood light shining on it from ground
We are in 6b can u give me specifics on putting it in the ground ie soil water sunlight, and some speicifics on how to winterize them for winter outside?
South side within 3 feet house wall, protect under 5F for best results. Any soil, water frequently in summer but they can tolerate dry
Thank you
I love how big they are
Yep they have some size to them

How big is it? Generally you should be able to leave alone till 5F
@ it’s still small, only about 4 or 5 full sized fronds on it. It had 2-3 fronds when I planted it.
@@tool0414 I would wait till closer to 5F. If you need ideas to cover let me know and tell me how tall

@@tntropics US.I'm in Canda so actually it might be the equivalent of US zone 5A/5B.
I'm here in Indiana zone 6A growing sabal minor.
That's awesome
@@tntropics thank you!
Do you feed and if so what do you feed your palms ?

just ordered my first sabal minor 🤞..i think the sub freezing doomed my windmills 😒been pulling spears on all three..but gonna try again this year
Congrats on the minor. What temps did the windmills see?
They saw -6 and only had lights on trunk fronds were toast , but was hoping heart survived, but nope. Spear pull every week 😒@tntropics
